[Q] Telus Desire HD (Canada) not downgrading (Tried Everything) - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, I need help doing this as ive tried everything... Ive got to the point where i go into hboot to load the image in the ZIP but it keeps saying wrong image / cant find image ect.... Ive created 2 gold cards and no cid issues i believe.... my build is 1.84.661.1 c1325797
ker " 2.6.32.21-gb291666 htc-kernel and18-2 #1
Android 2.2.1
base 12.35d.60.140fu_26.06.03.24_m2
Please help as im on day 3!!!
Matt

you know with that build, you can use gingerbreak v1.2 to perm root. you dont really have to downgrade.... then you can use the tools to radio & eng s-off
also, if you are trying to downgrade, where and or what are you putting onto your goldcard? If there's a PD98IMG.zip in the ROOT sd directory, the bootloader will try loading it up. just saying

According to:
[TOOL][VIDEO] One click Radio S-OFF, SimUnlock (Easy Root & S-OFF Guide)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
you need to downgrade if you are on 1.72.405.3 or higher build, or new radio (12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M is ok). Downgrade first!!
I read this gb method is a little more rishy and "AGAIN, THIS DOES NOT WORK ON S-ON DEVICES" . are you sure it will work on a telus Canadian version?
also, i am putting PD98IMG.zip on the sd's root directory and hboot is just not finding it...
anyone???

the fre3vo script may not work, if it doesnt, message me and i'll send you a link to an earlier version of the toolkit with gingerbreak in it

I Used JSLEnterprises suggestion around a month ago, I was on the same build as you & it did work, it actually did everything for you.... follow the instructions carefully & if your on telus... to make the audio better & fix the tinny sound, Search for the (cm7-inspire-audiofix-r1.zip) and flash after installing whichever rom u choose.

[Q] Concerns about rooting...

This will all probably sound extremely nooby but just want to make sure I dont do anything to break my new DHD!
I've previously had experience rooting and flashing ROMS on a Htc Hero and that seemed much simpler.
Basically what I want to know is, if I have a branded Orange DHD do i need to use a goldcard in order to flash ROMS like Android Revolution or is a gold card just if I want to a flash a HTC stock ROM? I've tried reading up on this but I'm still unsure...
And also, does rooting and flashing Roms and Radios affect the sim card at all or does it just affect the device itself?
Your similar card is fine no matter what you do, unless you try and bend it!
The process of flashing ROMs is exactly the same as the HTC Hero, my old phone, however some processes need to be run before you can flash.
If you have a branded Orange handset and firmware 1.72/1.84 you will need to downgrade to 1.32 before you can root and start these processes, ENG S-OFF & Radio S-OFF (Optional).
I will link an excellent guide that has all the info you need.

Once you have done everything, simply install ROM Manager from the market, flash Recovery from within there, Download your chosen ROM, flash from Recovery.
One point to note,
If you intend to flash a 2.2 (Froyo) ROM use a 2.x.x.x Recovery
If you intend to flash a 2.3 (Gingerbread) ROM use 3.x.x.x
thanks a lot, sorry to be a pain but the thing I'm really unclear about is if my DHD is Orange branded, but my firmware is 1.40.61.2 do i still need to downgrade to 1.32?
I don't know to be honest. Try running Visionary+ and see if you can root. If you can, then you don't need to downgrade.
Your firmware seems.to be rootable

And I can confirm it, no need to downgrade

[Q] Upgrading to 2.3 - fixing branded phone

Hello,
I bought this phone in January, at a local store (shouldn't be attached to any carrier or operator). Still, I didn't get the 2.3 update like the rest of my friends.
I asked HTC support and they say it's branded to an operator called Hutch (which i never heard of).
So currently, the local store never heard 2.3 was out so they are no use
and I'm looking for a suggestion on how to debrand the phone \ get the original 2.3 Sense 2.1.
My phone is not rooted (couldn't find a proper guide for 1.37.771.3 software version) and i guess it's s-on.
(there is no logo\splash screen or any other noticeable branding included).
Thanks in advance.
Hutch I assume is Hutchinson 3G, otherwise Three UK or just 3!
Hi,
Your firmware is ok to root, no need to downgrade. Follow these steps, and you will have Gingerbread in no time. I'd recommend downloading the RUU first as its 200+MB
1). Download Visionary+
2). Install to phone & run (temp root then perm root)
3). Download jkoljo's ENG S-OFF tool & run
4). Download jkoljo's Radio S-OFF tool & run
5). Download the Gingerbread RUU & run.

i guess by the file date it's the leaked release and not the official one, does it matter?
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
No, its the official release. I just got it early
Thanks
It took time, after doing all those backups.
But everything is working, better than ever (it wiped everything, but i'm good with that) and I have root access (i think).
Thank you for the simplified instructions.
Well, silly for me to think the root will stay.

[Q] [SOLVED] Final question before rooting my DZ

Hi,
I've got my DZ a couple of days ago. It's a secondhand DZ. Previously i've used HTC Touch, Touch Dual, TP2, so this is my first Android experience. I did lots of ROM playing on previous winmo phones, but after reading for these couple of days of Android modding, i learn that flashing another Android ROM is not so simple as winmo ROM.
This is my DZ info:
Android version 2.2.1
Baseband version 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Kernel version 2.6.32.21-g6e170e7
Build number 1.82.707.1 CL317545 release-keys
Software number 1.82.707.1
VISION PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT - 0.85.0009
MICROP - 0425
RADIO - 26.04.02.17_M2
eMMC - boot
Dec 13 2010
I've check with root checker and Titanium Backup, it says NO root access.
I've learned that with 1.82, i will have to downgrade first to 1.34.
In the steps for downgrading, i found that i will have to flash signed PC10IMG. But i also found in the sticky thread there's a warning, not to flash signed PC10IMG if i have S-OFF. So before i can downgrade, i have to get the S-ON.
I've read in a thread :
If for some reason (sending phone for warranty or repair, etc) you want to go back to S-ON:
- If you got S-OFF by flashing an Engineering hBoot, download the official HTC RUU for your phone version and flash the stock firmware back again. S-ON will be restored. This forum contains many threads with official RUUs.
- If you got S-OFF with gfree, it saved a backup copy to your SD card called "part7backup-xxxxxxxxxx.bin". It can be flashed back from a terminal emulator or from an ADB shell:
"dd if=/wherever/your/part7backup-xxxxxxx.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7
The problem is, i got a secondhand unit without microSD card. How can I get S-ON? I don't know how (what method) my DZ got S-OFF at the first place.
Any help is much appreciated.

You are already S-OFF? I'd find it strange that you'd be S-OFF and not be rooted.
install rom manager and check if there has been a recovery already flashed. Might answer your question
Why do you want s-on? S-off is a good thing
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App
You can check if you got S-OFF or S-ON
by entering bootloader
Power off your phone, then, hold the volume down key and the power key.
You might need to disable fastboot

I've already installed Rom manager and there's no clockwork recvery installed.
I want to flash custom rom. I need a root to do that. To get a root, i need to downgrade. To downgrade, i need to flash signed pc10img. And there's a warning here that said DONT flash pc10img with S-OFF. That's the problem.

I already did that. Bootloader says VISION PVT SHIP S-OFF. So that means i definitely have S-OFF.
I've learned some more from the post here and there. I think i figured out what happen with my DZ. I think the previous owner rooted and S-OFF the phone in the old firmware 1.34 then got an OTA update to 1.84. That update destroyed the root but somehow still S-OFF.
If I follow the direction in this thread, i assume that i can downgrade and root again. I will not need a goldcard to downgrade because currently i have S-OFF.

I am not sure whether it will work. But I am curious too.
I once upgrade via OTA and then I downgrade it following the instruction as per your link reference too. I rooted succesfully.
But, my DZ was S-ON.
Now you are in a different situation. You want to downgrade and root it but you already S-OFF.
Do you want to try it?

I guess i have to try it.. will report after trying. Thnks all for the help..
Your theory on the previous owner having used the over the air update after rooting seems right to me. I've read more than a few times it will still show S-OFF but not be true S-OFF. Because you can't get S-OFF without root (well surely not on the newer 1.82's)
I'm not familiar with the 1.82 issues (why normal root methods fail on 1.82) but I wonder if temp root works, if you have radio S-OFF and temp root works it might be as simple as:
1. Obtain Temp Root (even Visionary could work)
2. Flash CWM Recovery (I'd use the flash_image method and not ROM Manager)
3. Reboot into CWM recovery
4. ...
5. Profit (Install a new pre-rooted ROM)
Of course this all depends on if temp root works with 1.82 and if your S-OFF is really S-OFF but it seems like a quick & easy thing to try.
I did it guys. It went smooth. Still needs goldcard though due to unmatched CID.
I'm on 1.34, rooted and S-OFF. Next find out ROM that i like most. Any recommendation? it has to be cool and fast..
So i figured that the warning "do not flash signed PC10IMG if you have S-OFF" is before we have the misc_version method. With misc_version "main is older" problem will never occur, provided misc_version done correctly.
Thank you all guys for your help and time especially for those guides starter. You guys are the ones who make this forum SO GREAT!

U can use any of these guides - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877295
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597
Or
*BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS PROCESS YOU CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE WITH A CORRUPT RADIO.IMG*
To flash a radio using hboot with radio S-OFF you can simply take the zip file PD98IMG.zip from the hack kit (IN THE RADIO FOLDER) (Thanks ATTN1) and remove the radio.img file from it using winrar or 7zip, and put a new radio.img from elsewhere in the zip named radio.img and using store (NO) compression or Normal compression. Make sure it is named exactly PD98IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard. Reboot your phone into hboot and the new radio will prompt you to load. Press volume up on the phone and it will load automatically and ask you to press power to reboot.
Again, flashing radios is a risky business, do it very carefully. Make sure MD5 checksum matches.
I'd recommend following the linked guides

That is dangerous if your device is running or was shipped with GB version of android. Flashing the ENG S-OFF or a froyo Hboot will miserably mess your bootloader. If you are already S-OFF you can flash the modified ENG S-OFF included in the Hack Kit.
Use the Advanced Ace Hack Kit:

Be careful as somebody suggested because you can end up with a brick. Read the manual included.

That is because the tradicional ENG S-OFF had issues (severily messed) with the bootloader and put it in superslow motion. After a while the Hack Kit included a modified ENG S-OFF compatible with GB shipped devices...saves a lot of headaches

Yes, the Hack Kit lastest version will flash ENG S-OFF, but it is not the tradicional ENG but a modified one to work with all devices regardless the Android version they were shipped with.
I guess that currently doesn´t matter what version was your device shipped with but the one it is running at the moment. Mostly all devices have been updated and so have the bootloaders, so the risk is for all the people who actually updated. The best is to treat your device as shipped with GB always just to avoid a headache.
You can always flash a radio in the PD98IMG.zip way, that it is the safest. Always make sure that you check the md5sum of the file and that the radio is for your device, as stated in that thread. You are S-OFF if you used the Hack Kit some time ago, but ENG S-OFF if you did it in the last year...If you are just S-OFF (check what it says in the hboot top left corner), you can flash the ENG S-OFF from the HAck Kit options.
I always flash radios in the PD98IMG way, safest thou not faster.
:good:
Maybe I'm missing a step there?
It says "parsing", and the radio doesn't update :-\
Then the phone boots in safe mode...

If the file is parsed and you are not prompted to update, then your sdcard might be corrupted (have you tried using a different one?) or the file is not named PD98IMG.zip correctly.
Ill try a different SD card,
The name of the file is IMG not 1MG yes? I named the file correctly, inside the ZIP archive is just the radio.img file.
Not sure why it did that, before it says parsing it comes with PD98DIAX or something and "no file found" then it lists PD98IMG and parsing.
Unfortunately I havent had much luck with this phone
I remember the Desire being a similar radio update process.

inside the zip you should have the img file and a .txt file, otherwise it won't flash

Ah I see, well the txt file is missing - ill have to check the radio thread again to see what the go is as I downloaded the radio zip archives from there.
Thanks!
