Do I really need to have any zip I flash on the root of the card? I have like minor ocd and I'd really like to organize; put kernels in a kernel folder, miui updates in a folder, sense roms in a separate folder, pri's, radios, etc. Thank you in advanced
If you are using amon RA then that is fine. Using that recovery would allow you to look through folders and flash accordingly. I never save to the root anymore

Yes I do. Thanks for the rapid reply. I'm super pumped now!
EDIT: Also does anyone know if you can rename the folder of a particular nandroid backup. I have several backups of multiple roms. I hate going by the date sometimes.
I do the same thing. Have a folder named SDX with subfolders Apps, Kernels, ROMS, Drivers, Root, Themes, etc...

The only file that "has to be saved to root of SD" is a PC36IMG.zip that you are going to flash through the bootloader

Yes. Unrevoked 3.21 is a full root, with nand unlock. You can flash anything you want and do nandroids.
Ok thanks.

I'm sure there is somewhere if you google it or use the search feature on xda. Honestly there is really nothing to them, you do it from recovery. With RA, just select backup/restore and then select Nand backup. I'm sure it's very similar with clockwork.
This is probably a real dumb question, but just to be sure I figured I'd ask...
I am using the Amon Ra recovery.. ..however, I first started w/ Clockwork after rooting.. ..can I safely delete "clockworkmod" directory from my phone? I guess I'm asking because I don't see an AmonRa directory and just wanted to make sure my new recovery wasn't just leeching whatever it needed from my Clockwork directory.
Actually.. ..while I'm in this line of questioning.. ..what exactly is either one of these programs for? Just an interface to flash ROMs and other mods from?
I want to know this also because I'm done with CWM.

Yes you can delete it as long as you don't want the backups from it anymore ra backups will be in a new folder called nandriod .

Also your backups from cwm won't work on ra you can restore them on cwm then switch to ra and make a new one from there just go back and fourth till you have them all on ra this is what I did when I switched way back when.

They are recoveries. They do just that, allow for recovery. A safe place to mess with your Operating System (aka "ROM") without the actual O.S. running.
Mainly used for making backups, wiping, and flashing new ROMs. A nice front end to doing these things, instead of having to use the command line and having to type everything out.
Can i rename a nandroid backup file and then restore from? I know it names it with the date and time but i would like to name it something else.
Thanks

If you have clockwork, you can easily re-name them in rom mananger, just click manage backups, pick the selected, then rename.

So I'm not able to find a 'how to' on changing the boot animation, been running incRom for awhile now and figured I'd change things up a bit. Anyone know how or know a link to view how to change this? Thanks in advance
Do you have root explorer? If so you can copy and paste a new boot animation right in to the proper location. Probably system/customize/resource. Just rename or move your current one so you can still use it later on. I just made a pretty badass one recently. If you want I can post a flashable zip for you. Just let me know where its located and what clockwork recovery you have.

Ok need alil help on this one, I can do it through recovery but for the sake of learning to do this another way I'd like to try it through root explorer. I found the original boot animation listed under system/bin/ what do I need to do from there? Rename the original one and do I change permissions on that one and if so which ones do I check and uncheck?

Alright. So from root explorer scroll down to system. At the top it has mount ro and mount rw. You want to mount rw. Now find the original boot and rename it to VZW_bootanimation.zip.bak. Go back to the SD card through root explorer, long press and copy the new bootanimation. Now go back to system/bin and paste. Should work from there. Ive never had to set or fix permissions. Holla back.

I was wondering if you can change your nandriod back up name "IE" in es file explorer. my current back up file name is 1970-01-03.01.51.11, es file lets you change the file name, will that effect the nandroid in any way. it would be easyer to remember, stock, cm9, cm10, blue, ect.

Yeah, nandroids are huge on S3 don't matter what recovery you have. That if you use TouchWiz roms. AOSP roms are like Evo nands.

I always check the use compression setting in twrp. It has always worked for me and my first backup was about 1.2gb. I didn't have to many apps installed yet at that point though. I'm not sure how much space it actually saves but it should help.
I have an odd problem,
I create a nandroid backup of my S3 on touchwiz. I want to restore it to check my LTE speeds on it but for some reason I cant seem to get that done.
When I place it in the folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/touchwiz (called the folder of the backup touchwiz)
doesnt show up in restore.
I just create a new restore to try and find where it reads it from and cant seem to find those when I go searching on phone in USB mode.
What am I doing wrong here?
