I was wondering if you can change your nandriod back up name "IE" in es file explorer. my current back up file name is 1970-01-03.01.51.11, es file lets you change the file name, will that effect the nandroid in any way. it would be easyer to remember, stock, cm9, cm10, blue,ect.

I've had md5 issues changing babes. Use Rom manager to create your backup and it lets you name it. Or if your using twrp, twrp gives a rename function

I've had those issues too. But Rom Manager? Ugh. Looks like dude using TWRP. Use the name backup option before you make your backup

There a free version of Rom manager... and I just switched to twrp myself so until I'm comfortable using it I can't suggest it to anyone but it does have an option to have the backups and even a rename option

thanks, I have always used rom manager to install roms and updates but never to back up, i usually just go into CW. ill try it. I recently had to use RM to flash CM 5.8.4.9. the CW that was installed in my root did not give the option to back up and restore????

I never change the backup name, too many md5 issues in the past. I just put backups in a named folder

I quit changing the backup names after multiple issues with md5. I just put then in a named folder.

im on the latest TWRP v2.3.3.0 .. im on a stock rooted phone and was just wondering how to do a nandroid, is that just doing a backup in TWRP? .. was just wondering because the back up was like 2gb .. thats pretty big for a nandroid .. when i was on the og evo nands were mbs only but then again that was on custom roms .. is the jb stock rom that big? . was just wondering before i start flashing roms .. :laugh:

Yeah, nandroids are huge on S3 don't matter what recovery you have. That if you use TouchWiz roms. AOSP roms are like Evo nands.

I always check the use compression setting in twrp. It has always worked for me and my first backup was about 1.2gb. I didn't have to many apps installed yet at that point though. I'm not sure how much space it actually saves but it should help.
I have an odd problem,
I create a nandroid backup of my S3 on touchwiz. I want to restore it to check my LTE speeds on it but for some reason I cant seem to get that done.
When I place it in the folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/touchwiz (called the folder of the backup touchwiz)
doesnt show up in restore.
I just create a new restore to try and find where it reads it from and cant seem to find those when I go searching on phone in USB mode.
What am I doing wrong here?

Is there a safe way to rename the backups we make in CWM ? It currently labels them as "2011-05-22.17.55.36" depending on date/time .... I wanna be able to rename it so I know what is actually on that particular backup ; such as "SRF-1.1.1" "UrbanFury" , etc. When I renamed them before and then tried to restore , it wouldn't work. Anyone find a solution to this ?

That's what I have already done in the past , and when I tried to restore my back-up it wouldn't work ...was wondering if anyone else had actually renamed their backups and then successfully restored them. Maybe the way I was renaming them was wrong ? I need to leave spaces between words ? I need to include date/time format ?
I haven't done it before... but try changing to the 2 in 2011 to a letter. Sfr = s urban fury = u... see if it works.

Sounds Good = I hadn't tried that option yet.....now I gotta make another backup before I try renaming my last backup....LOL
the directory name doesnt matter at all... just dont leave any space, you may need to regenerate nandroid.md5 i dont know.. but if so its easy enough
in a shell goto your new backup directory

Ok I'm currently made a nandroid backup with cwn 3.0.0.6 and I'm trying to edit the name of my nandroid backup...in Rom manager, it wants me to flash clockwork recovery again...should I flash it or is that an error...I'm on srf 1.1.1 rite now

It won't actually flash it, choose flash and epic, and choose 3.x

Yea, its meant to be run from recovery in install scripts, but could be run from a shell... it has to be in recovery to do the system partition.. suppose the backup can be run from a shell regardless though...

I don't believe there should be any spaces. Try underscores: __ .

can I rename like you are suggesting (Bonsai411.6.1.2011) by connecting to my PC or will this only work via ROM Manager ?
I use es file explore and I just rename it to what ever the rom name is. For example I backup bonsai 4.1.1 and I named it bonsai. I was able to restore it with no problem. I also backed up marcusant rom and just renamed it gingerbread and I was able to restore with no issues. Hope this helps

OK - I tried your suggestion to rename but I did it on the computer ( don't have much experience with ROM Manager since I've always been told it don't really work on our Epic phone ) .... IT WORKED !!! I just changed the 2011 to UrbanFury and SRF and did restore with No Problemas ( I musta left spaces the first times I tried renaming ) ... so the moral of the lesson is - NO SPACES
I have an additional CWM backup/restore question. Does this back up apps installed on the SD card too, as well as their data? I don't don't know whether or not it matters, but I have CWM 3.0.2.5 and the Swiss Cheese ROM.

No your SD card is seperate storage and can be backed up on a computer.

It doesn't back up the actuall apps, you would need another app for that
like File expert or titanium back up or any other of the multitude of apps out there that do that

Unfortunately there's not that I know of, I always label nandroid as soon as I make them to keep from forgetting. If you do start renaming them, make sure there are no spaces in the name otherwise you will get an md5 mismatch error (assuming you are on cwm, TWRP does not have this problem)
You just have to rename your nandroid backups on your computer. It's in your sd folder when you connect your phone under clockworkmod. I have 3 backups, and I name them after the rom /theme that they are.

I am starting to do that, but like the ones from when I began flashing (about a month ago) I have like 5 nandroid right now. I think thats a bit excessive considering that I only used AOKP, Jugg and Stock. And thanks for the heads up about the md5 thingy. I don't rename them on my computer, I upload to box.net and add it in the description. That way I can keep my cluttered computer a bit cleaner. And I have 50GB so it doesn't really matter.
Use ROM Manager for backups as it gives you the option of naming the backup before hand. Personally I'm very specific on the names. I include the ROM, date, and other things like any mods or stuff like that

Hello. I'm running clockwork mod touch v 5.8.4.7 and when I backup any rom it names the backup 1970.**.** I know that cwm v6 is out, however I prefer cwm v5 (I feel as though on my gnex the nandroids took loads longer to backup and restore. And also prefer the old backup method as opposes to the new one.) So here are my questions. 1)has anyone else encountered this bug. And 2)is there a different cwm version that's either newer but not v6 that doesn't have this bug?
I'm pretty sure this is a known bug which doesn't have a solution for the time being. What you can do is backup through Rom Manager; this way you can name the file whatever you want.

Your question has been answered, but I would like to add two things:
ROM Manager can name backup folders for you, however, the datestamp on that folder and the included files will still say 1970. You can always rename the folder manually, also.
I was depressed about CWM's new backup methods with v6 as well. At least until I learned that it still has support for the old "full backup" method. I really detest incremental backups for many reasons. In my opinion, tar should be the default option.
To re-enable full backup mode with CWM v6, navigate to:
backup and restore > choose backup format > tar.
This setting saves, by the way. It stores in /sdcard/clockworkmod/.default_backup_format. This file contains the text "tar".
There is zero reason not to use v6 over v5. You can store backups on your extSD now. The only thing I don't like about it is total lack of UI organization. It is a total mess, but I love it anyhow.

No, it's just that the only people that have lost their IMEI have mostly been using CWM.
Hey, guys. I'm looking for some help here. I've been having some trouble with a few recent ROMs. I try to do a full wipe and do a fresh install of the new ROM, but I get an error saying something about being unable to read the lost + found file. I think it was deleted somehow because I can't find it. Does anyone know how to get it back? Can I possibly just reinstall a recovery or something? I don't actually know where the file even comes from to begin with.

I don't have a recent Nandroid backup at the moment. My last one would take me straight from AOSP 4.3.1 all the way back down to TW 4.1.2 and I just don't like that idea. It's caused me complications before.

Have you tried using a file explorer and looked to /data and in there do you happen to see a folder named lost+found? Suggest using ES File Explorer to look through the contents of your phone.

Weird.. Are the contents of each of them the same?? If thats the case then it may have occurred when flashing roms and an not fully wiping.

When I use ES, they are all blank and say 0b in properties. It always has every time I've looked at them, though and ice only recently had the problem.

I have it in both root of SD and the "0" folder. EFS_BACKUPS if done in TWRP. If you did it with FreeGee then in root freegee.

The root folder efs? I believe it is different from Samsung. Searching for mk9efs from system root led me here - /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/ . Searching for efs from the system root doesn't supply much, the location I just posted and a few other folders like efs-bridge. Now I may be wrong on this, @engine95 knows more than I, but I am under the impression that our efs are on 3 separate partitions and may not be accessible from a root file explorer. I don't think we have a root efs "folder". Again, I am NOT 100% on this and could be completely wrong.......

I'm not quite sure what he's asking.
The EFS backup with TWRP creates an "EFS folder with 3 files in it.
And if I remember right... @HPTesla is right. EFS is in 3 partitions. One of them is actually empty, but is still needed.
You can see the mk9efs files in the folder but that's it. Im guessing FreeGee and TWRP are basically just taking a picture of the partitions.
So to the OP, are you trying to make sure the files are there? Or are you trying to access the files in there?

? You should be able to do it from within TWRP. It depends on the version of TWRP you are using, 2.5.0.0 has been the most stable for this phone in my experience. It's an option in my backup and restore that I can check/uncheck. However, TWRP 2.6.3.0+ is needed to flash almost all 4.4 based roms and the options are different.

If you are still using the same TWRP version you used to make the backup but switched to an AOSP based rom it appears as if the backup disappeared. The backup is located in /data/media/TWRP but TWRP will look in /data/media/0/TWRP. You can copy the old backup to the 0/TWRP folder and reboot recovery.
If you are using a different version of TWRP than the one you used to make the backup, your backup may also not show up. You should use the version you used to make the back up to restore it back. I hope this helps.

It was part of an OpTimuS backup, it was in the actual thing, like there were efs1.win, efs2.win, etc. But I select restore and it.doesn't show up, when it did yesterday

It was on a stock based? And since it was there yesterday I doubt you are using a different TWRP. Ok I'm at a loss honestly....

I'm not having a problem anymore though. Stock works, so I just backed it up with freegee and restored
