Orange Desire debranded and going to 2.3 - Desire General

Hi guys, i've had my orange desire debranded since i got it and its been fine, but recently been having issues with friend stream never updating and phone constantly telling me its nearly full despite me deleting most of my apps and clearing cache and the wifi going dodgy.
So was going to factory reset it, but thought since 2.3 is not out should I just install that instead. Has anyone with a debranded orange desire done this already and noticed any issues?
I heard some one mention that if using the sat nav the phone no longer charges up while using 2.3, because the USB power is limited?

I've gone from debranded orange phone running stock 2.2, to the official 2.33.
Noticed several issues: Random resets, resets if I use the camera whilst touching the screen etc.
Once you've upgraded, you can't go back either.
I would strongly recommend you avoid, until such time as it's possible to root / s-OFF / downgrade HBOOT to install FROYO again (if you experience problems).
EDIT: That beings said, you could install a pre-rooted version which wouldn't upgrade HBOOT. Your choice really

Hey.
I was orange Branded with FroYo. I used the unrEVOked method to root my phone, used alpharev to s-off and then I started playing with ROM's.
I did all this before the gingerbread came out.
I'm currently using RCMixS Evolutionary Sense ROM. Its a mix of sense 2.1 and Sense 3 (the stuff that's on the sensation and such) Its a great ROM.
With official Ginger you are gonna have internal memory problems.
I highly recommend rooting and using RCMixS. Its not perfect, as it suffers from the usual setbacks of Dev GB (such as camcorder image being stretched etc)
but if I'm honest it doesn't bother me.
I've also partitioned my SD card so I have an extra 1gb of memory that the phone can use for the system. It runs very fast now and it is a pleasure to use.
Have a look at this thread for info on RCMixS and see what you think. I made the leap and I have never regretted it. Everything has worked fine for me except for the obvious know bugs, which all GB Devs will be ironing out soon, as soon as they get hold of the Source Code.
Hope this helps.

Hi there, yes I have tried everything but my 'official' HTC charger will only now supply 'Charging USB' since GB update. (NB This only through the car dock, the car charger and lead still charges at AC)
It was an Orange branded Desire on 2.2 prior to update.
Everything else works great and I was glad to get rid of those stupid Orange game demos.

I went from Orange branded to standard HTC froyo, then to gingerbread and I've had no issues at all. No crashing, no reboots, just improvements.
BTW I've never rooted my phone.

Thanks all for the advice, I've read about a few having problems with 2.3 but also about the same number with people having no problems. The charging thing with sat nav is a little worrying for me as i use it quite often.
I'm going to wait a while I think for a more clear picture to come out.
Out of intreast though does anyone have a link to a down load of 2.3? I guess you have to be a member on the htc developer site inorder to download it.

From what I have been able to gather, it's a very few people having issues. I'll be doing the upgrade sometime this week or weekend when I have time as it's my wife's phone now and she doesn't want me messing with it when she needs it for work.

I'm not shocked with this change...I found using Google Navigation was taxing on the power supply with Froyo 2.2 as well, so this basically means it won't charge the phone, but it should keep it running when plugged into the car outlet. And when it comes to navigation, I rarely leave it running with the screen on anyway as I don't need to look at it constantly. I use it to find a route to an unknown destination for me and then only look at it when I'm unsure of a turn or similar. While the screen is off, the phone should still charge as it did on Froyo. If not, then you just need to run Navigation with a full battery or intermittently. Remember, it's a phone, not a full blown dedicated GPS device for navigation, so you can't expect it to run and work all day like a GPS.
I'm going to wait a while I think for a more clear picture to come out.

You don't need to be a member...they're just not making it available over the air to everyone due to removal of some settings, etc. But I gather any Desire user can download and install it, even those in the "non supported" regions.

Just to add, the removed wall paper and apps (teeter and flashlight) are included with the downloads as APK files should you need them.

[Q] GPS issue with Froyo OTA update

Hey guys. New to the forum
Just done the OTA update to get to Andriod 2.2 on my HTC Desire and now have two glaring issues that weren't there before.
The first is the issue already mentioned here about the photos being blurred in full screen mode.
The other is when using the Power Control widget. When WiFi is on and GPS is off. When I then switch off WiFi it turns GPS on!
I also can't update my location details when using Google and Google Navigation can't find the GPS.
I don't know if anyone else is having this issue? What do you suggest I do? A hard reset? Is there a way to revert to Android 2.1 and try the 2.2 update again?
Any help is appreciated
We have it on the desire froyo port on hd2

I am using a non-branded Desire on the 3 Network.
I'm guessing there are issues with the OTA update from HTC as people are saying it's been pulled.
just got the OTA today and it's installing right now as I'm doing this typing.I don't think it was pulled but sent out in batches to reduce server overload.I'll let you know how the installation end up.
just finished installing ans everything seem to work ok except the GPS locking? It seems to take forever to lock.I even took it to the window to see if it would lock there but doesn't seem to respond.Any ideas?

this seems to be the case for me too. unbranded unlocked phone. GPS takes 3 or 4 minutes to lock
same here foursquare doesn't detect my location even with GPS is on
any fix for GPS ?
In your case I would do a hard reset. These things work for me after the upgrade. If you have task killing software installed, try removing these first and any other program that is tampering with system...
Good luck!
Tried a hard reset but issue still remains. Guessing it is something to do with the update then
Anyone had any luck with doing a hard reset?
I am running an unbranded Desire from CPW, on O2, and I upgraded to Froyo OTA at the weekend. The GPS works fine and locks normally (even got a fix when flying home from Greece yesterday - 541mph at a height of 7.4 miles! )
However, the blurry pictures is annoying me - but as soon as you pinch zoom slightly, the clarity returns, and goes again when you zoom out to full photo again. Irritating since everyhting else works brilliantly.
I read elsewhere on here that O2 are working on their own release - maybe that will fix this issue?

is there anything with the debranded handsets? Mine takes awfully long time to find a satellite..
I've just switched on Sygic mobile maps, and by the time the screen had loaded, the GPS was up and running - approx 15-20 seconds. Not sure why you guys are having problems, but it sounds very annoying!

Please help me!! (new user)

Hello all, new to the forum. Have been reading loads of topics and the amount of info available is great.
If it is possible at all, I would greatly appreciate some help with my desire.... I bought an unlocked/unbranded desire in London. Was waiting for the OTA update for Froyo 2.2 and tried to download it when I was finally prompted to on my phone but it would not download, saying the file was corrupted. Hence I installed it manually by downloading and installing the update.
Now for some reason, my phone will keep going onto "car mode" which will turn on and off randomly and repeatedly. This turns the screen on (even if its in my pocket) and drains the battery. All calls go to speaker automatically. Called HTC customer support and they claim the desire is not even meant to have a car mode- whether that is them talking crap or not is another question. They also said I have voided my warranty by updating manually.
How do I disable this annoying car mode permanently? From my reading I believe it is impossible to root my phone now as it is already running froyo 2.2.
If someone, anyone can help me or give me any advice that would be great
Thanks again in advance
Ali
Someone must have an idea..... ?
if you look in the development section, there is a thread where i think they managed to downgrade the new hboot to 0.80 look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741672
i assume that will make your device rootable again using unrevoked
That is odd. I didn't think that the desire had a car mode built in but I know there is an app which does that as I have it. It's called Car Mode (surprisingly).
Presumably you haven't got that app (or something similar) installed which might be causing it? If not you could try installing the app, using it to disable car mode and then uninstalling it.

Oh ok thanks. I didn't know that as I haven't got Froyo yet. Clearly the HTC customer support team didn't know either!
I think Froyo OTA comes with support for Car Panel, but not the actual app. I had to install it manually. But it might be in the rom you used. Second the turn off. Go to +> shortcuts>Settings>Car Dock and you should see the options, including Auto Launch.

Is there a way to fix this? I don't understand what's prompting the screen to periodically (and randomly) turning on. Even when wi-fi is off.
And when it does turn on, i lock the screen - and it turns on again as if the phone is taking the piss out of me lol. Drives me (and i'm sure all other users experiencing this) insane!
Any fix?
People have said this happens when a couple of the data prongs on the USB/Charge cable are shorted. Not sure why it's happening for you. Have you tried a factory reset?
You might want to install the OTA 2.2 update again. To do that you will have to wipe the device completely using this code. (came from this thread)
*2767*3855#
Think before you give this code. This code is used for factory format. It'll remove all files and settings including the internal memory storage. It'll also reinstall the phone firmware.
After that it should be possible to update the phone to 2.2 again.

[Q] Clock fired up on charger connect

Each time I connect my Desire to a charger or a computer, it wakes up and starts the Clock app. Even if it's locked. I'm using the stock 2.2 ROM, no root, HTC sense. Moreover, when I disconnect it, it acts almost exactly as if I pressed the “home” button.
Does anybody have any idea how to get rid of this?
By the way, my girlfriend has a Wildfire and a few days ago it started to exhibit the same behavior. Maybe it's related to the fact that she downloaded the OTA update to 2.2 not so long ago…

Because:
I don't have time to play around with my phone for a day or more to set everything up the way it was.
I like my warranty.
The last time I asked on a forum, there was no complete backup/restore solution and I'd hate to lose my PIM / application data.
The issue I'm experiencing looks like a misconfiguration or a bug in the HTC ROM that only started to exhibit after a few months of usage so I wanted to know if there's an easy solution.

[Q] Camera Screen Black

Just loaded up MikG 1.04 - currently the only issue I am having is with the camera. The entire screen is illuminated black with no picture when I go into the camera app. I can get out by touching the home button.
Have tried doing a full wipe and reflashing multiple times. Same result each time.
I have done some searches - most questions are regarding a camera white screen.
Thoughts?

Strange.....I've been running the same rom for a few days now with no issues. I would suggest going to the dev's site and look for an answer there. Links to his site are on his rom thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038967
I had the same issue. Not sure how I resolved it. It was either reflashing, or wiping the dalvik.
*Update* I think this may have been a huge coincidence and I may actually have a hardware problem. I have tried 5 different roms (2 Gb, 3 Froyo), reverted the radio, etc to everything I had 'pre 2.3' and I still have the black screen. At this point I am actually unrooted, and loaded up a RUU - same problem. Figured this is the way to go as my next step is going into a Sprint Service Center and hopefully walking out with a different Evo. Everything will look crispy clean and S-on to them
Still the whole process is a big PITA.
Took the Evo in to the local Sprint store - - they spent about an hour trying to RUU the thing, finally gave up because it kept automatically going into debug mode (which 2 of the employees were in disagreement whether it should be in debug mode or not!).
End result - - Brand new (non refurb) Evo is on it's way to the store - - should be in hand in a couple days.
I have no problems with it on this build but I did on one of the early froyo builds the solution was to clear the camera data and it was fine
Good to hear it was replaced with a new phone.

True that! In my past Blackberry days I would get nothing but refurbs. Going to pick it up tomorrow. I've seen a few people have gotten lucky and their new replacements still had 2.2 on them. I'm hoping for the same since it appears there's still no way to root the new hboot 2.16. Fingers crossed!

I used the instructions/links at the following thread to get myself to stock unrooted Froyo and then did the OTA updates to the current GB release before I took it in. I originally used Unrevoked to gain root.

There has to be another way, I rather not have to send my phone back when I've gone this far with it, even though I dont have to take it back to the store, because they always ask me just to mail it in, I would rather find a solution to the problem. It still takes pictures but its a pain.

If you're still able to take pictures, your problem is a bit different than mine was.
If you listen to the phone in a quiet environment when you press the camera app, normally you'll hear a slight 'click' when the picture comes on. (Assuming that is the shutter opening). My black screen evo had no such click.
I picked up my new Evo yesterday...complete with GB pre-installed. :-( When I did pick it up another employee asked the one I had been dealing with if he had swapped the cameras out on the unit. After hearing that, some quick searching on XDA brought me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884448
So it may be possible that a Sprint repair center could swap cameras out for you.

Several very weird heavy bugs (wifi, Bluetooth, calling networks)

Hey guys,
A year after replacing my Desire with an S2, I wanted to set up the old girl again, giving it to a friend of mine as her first smartphone. Well, now, all of a sudden I have several issues.
First of all: it worked absolutely fine before, up and including the day I turned it off for the last time. Back then, I took out the battery, SIM- and SD card and stored it in its box in my desk. It's rooted (no idea how I did it, hell, t'was over a year ago. I do suspect superoneclick though) and was running 2.2 until last night (more on that later).
Put it together, turned it on, sure thing: battery almost dead, so I plugged it in while checking it out. Turned on wifi, set up market so I could install some apps & updates. Well, I was in the middle of downloading some updates, when it told me there's some minor update for 2.2. I had no SD in, which was mandatory for the update, so I decided to turn it off and put in a card (while the app updates where still coming in). Well here's where it all went downhill. After reboot:
- No more wifi ("error", wifi-symbol turnes greyed-out green)
- No more Bluetooth (just won't turn on, no notification whatsoever)
- Calling one of my other phones resulted in the screen turning off, with no way of getting it back on (although the phone kept working fine, left a message on my answering machine with dead screen)
- mobile networks was activated, yet would not show in notification bar/actually connect.
Out of desperation, I then installed the official HTC 2.3.3 Rom, which - hey presto - got rid of the calling screen and mobile networks bugs.
I researched online, read a lot, and I just don't know what's going on. Bluetooth and wifi errors seem to be connected, but there's two kind of threads on that online (and here): People who run custom Roms and have that problem (I am on stock Rom, with no modification other than root) , and people who just had wifi magically turn on again after two weeks. I don't even understand how it can go from totally fine to being this busted. Was it rebooting while updating? All it updated was apps like Flash & Google streetview, after all.
But honestly, without wifi this is as good as a brick to me. I can't figure out what's wrong. I thought it was a hardware issue, because pretty much all communication was shot, but the major update to 2.3.3 sorted out two of the four issues. Well, I really need wifi. If Bluetooth is shot, I can live with that.
Is there anybody who can tell me what's busted and point me towards the next step? I'm absolutely out of ideas and can't seem to find anything that applies on Google and/or xda.
Thanks a bunch for ANY help & suggestion!

I think it is your best shot to flash custom recovery such as 4ext and to wipe everything (you can flash it via app so no fastboot required, and it is probably best recovery). By everything, I mean every single partition including sdcard. Then try to install some other rom, for example oxygen and then test the phone. If you need instructions just say.
First of all, thanks for the quick reply!
Yeah, I was thinking about flashing cyanogenmod at one point, but all these bugs put doing that at the end of the to-do list.
Regarding instructions, I'm a bit intimidated about formating the whole thing, simply because I've never used anything like 4ext before. So if you could point me to a good tutorial...

Ok, battery is apparently totally dead, so I have to wait till I can borrow one from a friend.
A question though. You mentioned "format everything". I assume this is, what CWM lists as "format boot/system/data/cache/sdcard/sd-ext"? All of that? Including boot? Just making sure here.
Thanks a bunch!
Well, finally got to ordering a new battery. No change. Phone won't start up, no charge light (although the battery, just like the last one, gets warm).
Guess I'm looking at a major hardware failure and thus a brick
