My friend has a desire which is completely standard, it has never been rooted or modified.
At the moment when he switches the phone on, it is stuck on the HTC splash screen, he can access boot mode if he holds volume down with power.
Any idea on how to fix this problem?
Thanks
if the phone is branded, find the latest RUU for his network from here, boot into fastboot (power off, then hold back & power), plug phone in via usb and run the RUU. make sure you find the right one or you'll just make it worse
If the phone is unbranded, flash the latest WWE RUU.
If the phone is branded and you cannot find the correct RUU, and you also have a desire, create a goldcard with HIS sd-card, then flash the latest WWE RUU

I created a goldcard a while ago using a spare SD card i have got. So it seems quite straight forward them, flash the WWE ruu whilst the goldcard is in the phone?
But how come you mention the goldcard must be HIS sd?
no just the fact that so he would be able to keep it, any goldcard will work (sorry if that confused you ). And yeah it's pretty straightforward with a goldcard, just flash the latest WWE RUU.
An update on the situation;
I have been doing some research on XDA and a few people mention to put the phone in the fridge for 5 mins. I have done this and the phone does boot up normally.
But when the phone gets warm, it restarts and freezes on the HTC screen again.
Is it still the same procedure to fix this? By inserting a goldcard and flashing the WWE ruu?
thanks
sounds like a faulty motherboard.... warranty?
Is it definetly a faulty motherboard?
Unfortunately it has no warranty.
Try to wipe data.

Me too.
Whatever procedure you do (run RUU, have it rooted etc...), the phone seems to get warm through the procedure anyway.
I join the opinion about the faulty motherboard.
I would sent the phone to htc anyway, but with a letter in which your friend asks if it's possbile to make a quotation. When your friends gets one back, he can decide wether he wants pay for the repair or just buy a new phone.
I think I could be with the same problem, phone working perfect till it gets warm enough that it restarts and halts in splash screen. This behaviour has been repeating over weeks till now, that it wont event load recovery, it stucks at the splash screen...
It seems all hboot and fastboot commands work without problems, but the phone is unable to start properly. Could this be a problem with the phone itself that leads to failure upon heating up?
I've also tried this:

But I get a "can't find the phone via USB" error running the UK Vodafone Froyo RUU being in fastboot, any clue what this could be?
Make sure you installed hboot drivers and htc sync drivers (correctly).
this problem is very similar to mine i was having with restarting in heavy usage, about 35°C the phone automaticly reboots over and over again
this problem is caused by faulty mobo for 99% this case the whole motherboard being replaced,
few days before i pick up my repaired desire and now everything works perfect,
so only one solution - if you are S-off reeturn to stock S-on and sent desire to repair
idea
I have an idea.. if it works when it's cold.. why don't you plug it in via USB.. stick it in your freezer.. and run the RUU from a laptop next to it .. I know it's a longshot... but could give it a try
I've got a weird behaviour now... When I plug the phone on fastboot, the RUU program recognices it, but the phone freezes there in the first step, so I have to restart the phone for the program to continue.
Its like if every time the program itself talks to the phone, the phone halts in fastboot, not letting the program boot in hboot and flash itself... ^^
Any clue what this could be? I'm gonna send the phone to support, but I would like to restore it to S-ON at least to avoid problems with void waranty...
EDIT: I've finally made the update on the phone, but it seems RUU_Bravo_Froyo_Vodafone_UK_2.33.161.2 didnt touch the HBOOT, so I'm still S-OFF (and the Alpharev pink slogan is on first line). Should I flash a more recent RUU or is there another way to get rid of S-OFF? The rest seems to be OK, the phone is still not loading past splash but the recovery seems to revert back to normal (no CWM).
EDIT2: I've forgot to flash bravo_downgrader from alpharev to unlock the hboot to be able to overwrite it... damn! Now to hope HTC could fix my phone or at least send me another that works properlly...

I have a rooted Desire on Orange UK and running LeeDroid. I have my main SD card and a spare (the spare is used for flashing any roms etc.). I've made both goldcards.
Recently I've had problems with my phone rebooting randomly and today it did the same (been meaning to get in touch with HTC for a motherboard replacement which I've read fixes it). Sometimes when this happens it gets stuck on the white HTC logo and the solution is to pull the battery and then wait a bit and turn on and then it's fine. However today I did just that and now I can't boot into the OS or recovery modes.
I had a generic RUU that I used to downgrade my bootloader previously so I thought running that to flash back to a generic rom would at least get me back to a starting position. However I'm getting the CID error running that, using both goldcards. This would suggest to me the goldcards aren't properly working now!
Obviously not being able to get into anything other than bootloader/fastboot I cannot connect via adb and I also can't attempt to remake a goldcard. The ideal solution would be to get it into recovery somehow just so I can re-flash a rom.
If my phone is buggered then will Orange/HTC be able to tell if it's rooted (I'm guessing they will have a way), or will they need to flash an Orange rom and thus remove the root when that happens? If I have no choice, who shall I contact Orange or HTC? If repair under warranty is unlikely I have insurance so luckily I am covered.
Any advice is welcome. Going to pop out for a bit to calm down my annoyance but will be online again later.

Bump.
Will be returning via Phones4U today, unless anyone can come up with a last minute suggestion.
What errors do you get if you connect via USB and:
adb reboot recovery
...?
Did you run an undervolted/overvolted/overclocked ROM? If it wasn't stable, that will mess your phone up. Qualcomm can easily trace that, Orange can't, unless they refer back to them.
And yes, they will be able to tell if a device is still rooted. Not if you undo it with your stock RUU flash though.

I get the CID error if I try to run an RUU.
I can't get into recovery and if I try to connect the phone using unrevoked/desire downgrade/adb through the command line it either says device not connected or please connect the device.
It wasn't under or over-volted.

the creating golden card is now obsoleted method. It better, that you use unrevoked method to make new HDBOOT from www.unrevoked.com with following instructions. You can root easy and do everything you need only on rooted phone. I will reccomend also and make S-Off for full access in your phone. Everything in one place - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
Enjoy!
Thanks both.

it means, the drivers are not installed. you can take it from
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
and you must read faq http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
I've used unrevoked before without issue. Tried re-installing the drivers and it didn't work.
Is it because I can only get into fastboot/bootloader?

Nope. Unrevoked will work if your PC can see the phone. So you have a connection error caused either by a incomplete/faulty setup on the PC, or with your USB attachment (cable/connectors/ports).

Thanks for everyone's help. I don't know why Unrevoked could not see the phone then. Had ensured the drivers were installed correctly in device manager etc.
I also have no idea why I would be getting CID failure when this has never caused me a problem previously. My suspicion is a hardware fault so I've sent to HTC for repair.
Got my phone back from HTC today, motherboard replaced
Hi, Im trying to fix my Desire after getting water damaged, I have spent some time disassembling and drying out, so know that all is dry, when I turn it on My O2 screen flashes on then dies out and restarts, staying in this loop. I can get into the hboot menu. so Im looking for help restoring my stock hboot?? I think?
The phone hasnt had any custom images loaded to my knowledge, so i dont think it will be rooted or ready to load custom images.
Anyway my phone details are:
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
will it be as easy as finding the hboot and copying to my sd?
much appreciated.
EDIT: NOW SOLVED - Thread Summary:
Alot of useless information in this thread regarding my ACTUAL problem but still some good info on creating Goldcards. After completely drying phone out after getting wet, I reassembled and tried it out, and it just flicked the O2 screen up and restarted, after trying everything below I then found out I needed a new battery, thats all! lol, so this is incase someone else has a phone that acts like mine did after water damage, I have a link to a youtube vid of what my phone was doing.
Thanks to all who helped me get problem resolved, my phone is back!
Can you get to the fastboot?
If so try running "fastboot devices" is your phone recognized?
Edit:
Ah you're S-ON, then go to fastboot, try downloading appropriate RUU for your device and run it.
See what happens. (you might need gold card if you are branded)
I guess you cant get to the recovery?
You could have not changed your hboot if you are s-on. So there is not hboot which needs to be restored. If you are would be really damaged, you would not be able to power on your desire at all. The hboot is the absolute basis of an android phone (like bios for computer). If this gets damaged, your phone is totally bricked and not more than an expensive paperweight.
When you are able to access fastboot (start phone with pressed back and power button or boot into hboot>choose fastboot with volume buttons>enter with power button), you could flash a ruu. To find out which is the right one, you need to tell us wether your phone was branded or not and when it was branded, which provider you have.
Hi thanks for replies, I understand I dont need to replace my hboot as i can get into thue menu and i can get into fastboot menu aswell. Its branded O2 so where can I find an RUU thats suitable?
If you cant get into fastboot menu, you are pretty much screwed because RUU wont detect your phone.

ok i have downloaded that ruu, but its not detecting my phone. when i first turn phone on with vol- held i get hboot menu. one of the options is fastboot (already selected) i select that by pressing power button, then my menu changes to fast boot. then my options are: bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader, power down. i left it at this menu while i ran the RUU, is this correct? also do I need to install any other software on pc? I have installed the HBOOT USB driver earlier while I was looking about, does this need removing? also my hboot menu when first run looks through files on my sd card, should i copy the ruu file to sd?

Yes, not touching the menu is correct.
No, you do not need to install any other software on your pc.
No, you do not need to remove the hboot usb driver.
No, don't copy the ruu to sd. I recommend to save important data on sd card (just in case). Just run the ruu on your computer.

Installed hboot drivers correctly:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Furthermore, check if you have only htc sync drivers installed.
The goldcard can only avoid the cid error, and has nothing to do with the usb connection.
When u use Unrevoked remove HTC connectivity from ur computer...
And u can use FastbootCommanderV.1.5 to patch HBOOT...
ok getting somewhere USb drivers must be screwed on my lappy, i installed on another machine and using fastboot commander I could connect in fastboot mode and got my phone details up, I then tried the RUU that you gave me a link to earlier and it successfully connected and attempted the update, although after about 2 mins it says that its the wrong version ruu. current version is: 2.14.207.3, one contained in RUU is 2.14.207.1 So what should I do now?
wow what crappy luck, you seem to have a new version so it won't let you downgrade.. bump from my end :/

No it will not. A goldcard can only help you, if you want to flash a stock ruu although you have a branded phone. When you do not have a goldcard in this situation, you get a cid error.

Yes and no. For the case, he wants the stock ruu, you are right. But he wants to use his warranty, so needs the ruu of this provider. But the ruu he wants flash is older than the one he is running now. So he cannot flash the the ruu. And this problem cannot be avoided by using a goldcard, because the hboot version has nothing to do with the cid number.
On this way I at least understand the matter. Correct me, if I am wrong.
I downloaded the new 2.3 RUU as I wanted stock unrooted GB on desire.
I had/have oxygen R2 hboot on vodafone UK and I didnt make a goldcard (didnt think I needed one stupidly with an official RUU)
so I tried to run the RUU and now my screen is black with HTC logo and exclamation marks in all four corners.
is this now a bit fat brick or is there anything I can do?

That's a vodafone RUU, it works for my phone, it will work for yours, so AFAIK you don't need a goldcard to use that one.
Turn off your phone (battery pull), hold back + power which will boot you into fastboot mode, then run the RUU from your pc (plug your phone via usb obviously)

you'd only need a goldcard if you are unbranding a phone i.e. having a vodafone one and running a WWE RUU.. if you have the right RUU you don't need one.. since the CID et. etc. matches the RUU.

Only a black screen with HTC logo in middle and exclamation marks in 4 corners. Where it usually says "HBOOT" etc it just Says RUU

yeah thats what happens, but you should still be able to get fastboot* (*I think), and then flash it..
okay when this happened to my phone, I ran the HTC Europe RUU, which finished installing and restored my hboot (no idea why), then I was able to flash recovery and simply flash a new ROM from there. You can try it. No promises though.

I've been trying to debrand a HTC Wildfire S and have got a bit stuck..
It was originally on TMobile UK 1.34.110.3 + HBOOT 0.90.0.0. I've run this exe 2.13.401.3 from shipped roms as below:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...35.3037_7.54.39.28M_release_236989_signed.exe
The rom said that it had installed successfully but it is now stuck on a flashing black screen, it's like the backlight comes on every couple of seconds. I can't get into Hboot by pressing vol down and power either
Any ideas would be much appreciated
Cheers

Try another ruu, with a lower version, then do an over the air update.
It may be to late, as you may have a brick, in which case only warranty will help.
If your pc recognises your phone, you will need to create a goldcard to run a lower version ruu, unless you have s-off.
Don't think it's looking good. It already has a goldcard, however the phone isn't detected by Windows and I can't get into hboot to install a zip. Looking like it's in the hands of the warranty people
Hi, i am aware of fact that this propably happened to someone else before, but search wasnt much of use (i tried it for almost hour)

But it is. If you install amoled related RUU and you have slcd device you will end up with screen not working. In my opinion the best choice ti install is 2.3 RUU because it is made for all screen versions plus you won't get 131 error which is CID incopatibility cause it's the same for all regions. And you won't destroy the warranty.

I've just opened a thread about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772499
EDIT: Just give me a word if it worked.
there was some progress, but not as much as I think it would be... phone restarted itself in middle of update several times in row (or i think, it vibrated several times in few seconds, it has happened before, its one of reasons it goes to warranty service) and RUU gave me unknown error (forgot number, but it was labeled as unknow error).
screen is working now, after turning on, if USB is plugged, i see htc logo with exlamation marks in corners, if I unplug usb, i can see bootloader with only option, RUU (instead of usual 4 ones when phone is ok). tried to run HTC RUU again, but it fails after system update part, giving me error 152: image update error
after disconnection of usb, phone gives me table where everything is ok, except radio_v2, where is instead of OK some "fail-PU", after phone restart, i am stuck at htc logo with 4 trinagles in corner, pluging/unpluging usb gives me white screen with that RUU option only
Something went wrong try to remove battery and try once more with RUU. If no luck try goldcard method with WWE .zip.
Also try to extract rom.img from RUU and try to run it from goldcard.
some guys on xda says you should try RUU over and over and over... and most of them says this is baaad situation, will GC work?
You can try with GC and WWE RUU you may be lucky. Everything sounds lie you have some issue with flash memory of you phone.
And of course, try as many time as you want you may have success.
I put phone into Freezer, then performed RUU and it works now gotta love that piece of mashinery btw any idea about TMO branded ROM for slcd desires, so i dont do any funny shiet again?
btw i really apreciate your will to help, these kind of ppl are rare these days, thank you man
You're welcome, I totally forgot about that s**t with freezer, sometimes it gets overheated so nothing works.
Forget about branded RUUs, you never know what will you get at the end. Now try revolutionary, get s-off and root, and there's a plenty of roms you can try. Go here and you have it all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
Plus hboot change is recommended (why don't you get more space when you can).
alpharev.nl
I had s-off and root and I will have it again, but still, need to put phone in service for warranty purpose and in our country, it isnt any simple, thats why branded rom :/
btw that **** with freezer doesnt surpise me, i am giving it to service partly for overheating problems... and leaving phone without battery for a while to cool down was my standart phone starting procedure, but I had no idea that even harder temperature decrease has such influence on performance (while using RUU, phone was at standard room temp.).
Anyway, thank you again, you helped really lot
