So I have au by KDDI here in Okinawa. They have WiMax service, but it seems I'm just inside the outskirts of the service. Well, in my room I cannot connect to it, but I found out earlier today that I can in my friends' room. He is one floor up and a few feet over. So this kind of confuses me how such a marginal distance can make or break it.
Anyways, is there anything I could do to pick up WiMax better or anything like that? It was one of the main reasons I got the phone and would hope to use WiFi tethering for a main internet source.

That's wimax. A thin piece of drywall is enough to reduce the signal by at least half.

No, nothing you can do to boost wimax signal. The ONLY thing you can buy to boost a cell signal is an Airave, but that only boosts your cell and 3g signal, and it uses your internet connection to do so.
You can edit some of the settings.
If your on Sense goto phone and type ##3282#
go to edit mode
type your msl
goto wimax
Here are my settings
WIMAX_SCAN_ATTEMPT_TIMEOUT(S) = 1
WIMAX_SCAN_RETRY(S) = 120
WIMAX_IDLE_SLEEP(s) = 10
WIMAX_ENTRY_RX(RSSI)(dBm) = -110
WIMAX_ENTRY_CINR(dB) = 4
WIMAX_ENTRY_DELAY(s) = 15
WIMAX_EXIT_CINR(dB) = 1
WIMAX_EXIT_DELAY(S) = 15
HANDOFF THRESHOLD = 6
IDLE MODE TIMER = 60
TLS = ENABLE
TTLS = DISABLE
Make sure to hit menu, and commit modifications.
The WIMAX_ENTRY_RX(RSSI)(dBm) - the lower the number the the weaker the signal can be and still connect. -110 is the lowest, but still gives me good enough signal to tether my laptop at work.
WIMAX_EXIT_CINR(dB) - again the lower the number the more noise it will allow and still stay connected
WIMAX_EXIT_DELAY(s) - the time in seconds it will wait before dropping the connection after signal is lost. For instance, driving under a bridge may cut your signal for a moment, but lengthening this will keep it from dropping back to 3g.
Someone else discovered this, I am just passing it along. Wish I knew the guys name to give him credit. There is a thread explaining all of this, and I would have just linked it, but I cant find it at the moment.
Some people say this has extended their coverage for up to 1/2 mile. Your mileage may vary. Make sure to write down the original settings, just in case something goes wrong.

I'm not sure if you can find it without root.
You should be able to call your provider, and ask for it. If they ask why you want it, tell them you want to downgrade your PRL for better reception.

Go to the main forum page and search "how to find your msl" it should be the second or third thread.
In search use show thread, not show post.
I would link it, but I'm on the App.
Yeah I've been doing searches and browsing through alogcat but cannot find MSL in it at all. Then I tried calling my provider and that didn't work either. It's a primary Japanese company and they have terrible English speaking operators.
Ok, well we thought you were talking about an Evo, since you posted in an Evo forum. We can't help you with another phone.

I'm guessing he has the Japanese Version of the EVO. Essentially the same phone, called the EVO WiMax over there.
I saw people posting wimax 4G boosters before, but last I knew they cost hundreds of dollars and didn't gain you all that much.
During a quick search the only boosters I found were external antenna that were made to plug into WiMax modems, not a phone.

Correct, you need root for that app to work. There is also a website that will give you your msl for like $5. I have seen it advertised on sprint users forum before.

I think KDDI did something to the MSL, because every method I've tried doesn't work. I've tried looking through alogcat, cdma workshop, adb shell getprop, and occasionally my phone will post a "manufacture code" in the about settings that doesn't work.
Even tried calling into the customer service but no luck since they speak broken English

Hey all, I'm more of a search and learn user than a poster, but I have yet to find an answer by searching alone, so here goes.
My EVO tends to dip in and out of signal on a regular basis, but more often then not when I'm driving. For example, the phone will go from having 5 bars, to none, then back to 5 in a matter of seconds (id say about a minute). It did this 4 times on the way home from work today. I just came from T-Mobile, and I cant recall this ever happening on their GSM network. Is this a phone issue, or a typical behavior of Sprint and or CDMA networks?
Thanks!

mine does this also...and i came from tmobile too, i dont think its relaly losing service... b/c if u lose service there will be an X next to the bars...i think it might just be switching towers and not doing it smoothly... b/c whenever it dips i try to make calls to make sure i still got service and what do you know it always works :/
also sometimes i notice it dips to 1 bar then back up in a matter of seconds... any idea anyone?
Yeah I agree that I still have voice service, however my data does completely stop. Its a pain cause all my background downloads get interrupted and often broken.

I noticed it on occasion on AT&T but that could be because of their ****ty 3G network here.
I have noticed it on Sprint too. I never completely drop service, but I do frequently drop from 5-6 bars of EvDo down to 1-2 bars of 1xRTT then it jumps right back up. It seems to only happen when I'm driving fast

hmm not sure... i also do notice i get error codes when sending txt's sometimes... like error 107 or 97 and i think 32 before... but it hasnt occured recently... its mainly when i send txts back to back super fast... or if im sending one when someone is sending me one...
so i dunno if the port from tmobile is just bad? or what...
forgot to mention 2 of my friends evo's do the same thing... they live near me... and well it does it but i dont think as often as mine... not sure... but it seems liek all evos do it... maybe just bad service area?
I definitely don't get error codes, but the service going in and
out is really annoying. So annoying, that i may drop Sprint and return my evo.
hmm then i dunno i would call and ask, i think sprint jsut has spotty service for you, have u check the tws?
(time without service percentages)?
and did u do the cmda auto prl? after i do that it helps ALOT
How do you check the TWS? Also, by auto PRL, you are referring to the "Update PRL" feature in Software Update right?

go to settings and battery and batterystatus and check cell standby, then the prl thing is to set it so its CMDA and not GSM setting...
its not the update PRL there is a thread about it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717785
"If your phone is afflicted with TWS > 0, try this procedure.
1) In dialer, dial *#*#4636#*#* to enter "Testing" app.
2) Under Phone Information, set Set preferred network type to CDMA only.
3) Exit Testing by pressing "back" key.
4) Enter Testing again.
5) Set network to CDMA auto (PRL).
6) Exit Testing again.
This fixed my TWS, and the settings stick on reboot."
btw u MIGHT have to do this everytime after reboot
Done.. I appreciate the advice. We'll see if it works. I wonder if you can use the "Network" app to do this... Also, I applied the verizon PRL hack and it worked.. However, I'm just afraid to use it before I test if it charges roaming.
Also, TWS is 3%
evo has NO roaming charges on the plans... whatsoever...
hmm your tws is low... i dont see why your signal just drops like that... mine isnt as much as you if your saying yours does it allt he time... but mine does it and it hasnt bothered me...
werd... my phone just now did the no connection to 3g... anyone else figuire out what this was?
I have tried to search but it doesn't like to include 4G (to short to be included) in the search box so forgive me if I wasn't bright enough to find this somewhere else.
My EVO will scan for 4G service. It then says connecting to Sprint, then flashes disconnected and scans again only to say connecting to sprint. Rinse and Repeat this process over and over. I have had this issue both on clean installs of fresh rom and currently on Koni's elite series rom. Anyone have this issue as well/and or know of a solution.
I do have a 4G MAC address so I would think that I should be able to connect.
Thanks in advance for the help

Well for one are you in a strong 4G coverage area?
Try shutting off your phone, pull the battery for a minute or two and restart your phone. (If you call Sprint and tell them this issue - this step will be the first one they tell you to execute)
Also you can try updating your profile and PRL, When I am having weak signals under 4G/3G - I update my profile & PRL and it always seems to fix the signal issue...
hope this helps
JS3
this happens to me when trying to connect to a 4g signal from my apartment. it will say "scanning... connecting... obtaining IP address/disconnected/scanning...connecting..." (sometimes the "obtaining ip address" does not appear) yet if i try to connect in other parts of town it connects fine. wimax sucks as far as connectivity, so until more towers appear and the signal is better there's probably no way to fix your issue. ive tried every inch of my house, and of course by the windows is slightly better. if you can manage to get a "poor" or "fair" 4g connection you'll probably end up with slower speeds than 3g anyway. it's really misleading because the software indicates the phone is trying to connect even though the signal isn't good enough to maintain a connection. clear and sprint coverage maps indicate my address and neighborhood as "best" 4g coverage too, so i have little hope of this ever improving. there is a thread for updating your ##data# values to get the phone to connect sooner and stay connected longer which i think probably helps, but not enough for me (nothing you do on your end can improve the tower signal) and even if it did, like i said you're connecting at "poor" or "fair" signal and your data speeds will often remain slower than 3g.

I am good coverage areas, my work where I am now can get it in buildings and comically my home is exactly on the line of in-home/on-street. Tried pulling the battery to same results, I think I have current PRL 60675 PRI 1.90_003. Not sure what you mean for the profile though.
Thanks for the tips.
I can connect to 4g with a poor/fair signal now, and heres how I did it if anyone cares:
flashed joeykrim's rooted stock sprint rom (5.1 I think)
updated prl through settings menu
updated profile through settings menu
use msl reader app from market to get msl code
go to dialer and type (NOT call) ##DATA#
enter MSL, go to edit mode, tap the first out of the 5 or so menu items
press menu, choose "restore" (phone will reboot or power off)
turn phone back on and enable 4g with phone on window ledge.
somewhere along the line (flashing many many different roms and wiping a lot, trying various kernels and tweaks) I had gotten stuck in the seemingly irreversible 4g/wimax connection/disconnection loop. Now I can at least connect!

Super slow data speeds?
Poor voice coverage?
Try a custom PRL
Custom PRL files
if you live in an area where you only get 1x this mod will work for you
I use 0001.PRL attached at bottom. it works best for me.
Notice: Custom Prl's will force you to roam causing mostly all data to be roaming. if you use more that 2 gigs a month this hack may not be good for you as you may get booted off their network for to much roaming.
I put together a guide on how to manually change your prl on the epic touch. This will work with rooted and non rooted devices.
For windows users only.
First you need your MSL code.
1. go to the market and install terminal emulator
2. Type ‘’getprop ril.MSL’’ this command is case sensitive so make sure it’s typed correctly.
3. Take note of the 6 digit output number.
or
1. Call sprint and tell them you want your MSL number to do a data reset or some BS story like that. They will usually give it to you. If they don’t hang up and call back until you get someone that will.
2. Make sure you write down the number.
Now on to installing the software and drivers.
1. Download, and install the QPST application
2. Download, and install the Samsung drivers
3. Make sure USB debugging unchecked. Menu>settings>applications>development
4. On the dial pad dial ##8778# and select all. Click home
5. Plug in your device and let everything install.
6. Check the ‘’USB tethering’’ ox under menu>settings>wireless and networks>tethering. This should install a few things needed to create a com port.
7. Open up device manager on your computer. Check to see if you have a tab called ‘’Ports (COM & LPT)’’
8. Take note of what your com port number is. Should say ‘’ SAMSUNG mobile modem diagnostics serial port’’ Mine was 9 yours will most likely be different.
Now let’s change your PRL
1. Open up ‘’QPST Configurations’’ on your computer Start>All Programs> QPST> QPST Configuration.
2. Make sure you are on the ‘’ports’ tab and click ‘’add new port’’
3. Look for the port number that you got from device manager
4. If it’s not there uncheck ‘’ Show Serial and USB/QC Diagnostic ports only’’ if it still doesn’t show unplug usb and restart phone and computer.
5. After you add the correct comport click ok.
6. Now highlight the com port and click ‘’Start Clients” on the top of QPST and open Service programming.
7 .in the screen that opens you should see the phone name FFA6550-ZRF6500, the phone number should be wrong but that’s ok. Select it and click ok.
8. Click the ‘’Roam’’ tab and browse for the .PRL file you wish to load to your phone
9. Click write to phone. QPST will now ask you for the ‘’service programming code’’ this is where you type the MSL code
10. Your phone will automatically reboot and you should be on the PRL you flashed.
11. To check menu>settings>about phone> status check the PRL version. it should match the prl number that you flashed.
12. down load Netmonitor from the market this will tell you the carrier you are roaming on, in my case its sprint, and the network type, mine is EvDo rev.A! :-D
13. Don't forget to add a check to ''USB debugging'' in menu>settings>applications>development otherwise some applications like titanium back up wont work.

For those people don't know, it force you to roam on Verizon network
OP please include a warning about using this PRL and possible related issues to it.
There was a thread like this for the Evo when it launched, and if I recall correctly, it wasn't even worth it. Barely worked for anybody. Connection was very flaky.
Hopefully this is different though. I'll give it a shot after I root.

Yes. Use this PRL very very very carefully. You can, and will, be kicked out of your contract if you use this PRL exclusively and talk a lot and/or consume a light-to-moderate amount of data.
You've been warned.

To get back to normal update your PRL as you normally would. This is different from roam control in that it puts you on Verizon/Alltel towers exclusively and instead of forcing roaming which would be at 1X it is full-speed 3G.
It works very well, especially if you are in a congested or low-signal area. It has helped me out on a number of occasions.
That said, be warned. This isn't something to play around with if you don't understand what is going on.
Roaming costs Sprint money and they will happily give you the boot for costing them too much money. Typically, but not always, they will send you a letter or call you before cancelling your contract. 1000 minutes/300mb is the guideline to go by. Plenty of people have gone far beyond that without a peep from Sprint but I wouldn't risk it...
...unless you want out of your contract.
Thanks. I get it now

Can someone post some speed test results? I want to see if they have improved. Thanks.

I'm curious to see some speedtest results.. This is intriguing, I wouldn't mind swapping the PRL at the beginning of the month until I hit ~200MB of 3G data usage and then 'updating' to the Sprint PRL for the remainder of the month. My 3G speeds here are horrible, I left Sprint last summer and at the time 3G speeds weren't bad at all.. now I'm back a year later and I'm getting 10-15kBps.. unacceptable! When I can get 4G signal the speeds are usually between 150kBps-1,000kBps (very acceptable) but most of the time the signal doesn't penetrate buildings at all.
Sprint kicking someone off of their network because of the excessive roaming would be a slap in the face in my opinion.. if they upgraded their network then we wouldn't have to be putting matters into our own hands!
In areas where there is no Sprint 4G coverage but there is Verizon 4G would doing this make it so you'd pick up Verizon's 4G signal?

have you tried removing the proxy settings?
Here's what I've experienced:
3G Sprint Proxy Enabled: About 600Kb/s
3G Sprint Proxy Disabled: About 1000-1200Kb/s
3G Verizon (with a verizon phone, droid x): about 500Kb/s
So basically I get better speeds with sprint .. unless i'm in a place that roams

Keyword there is "seem". Every rom uses different algorithms to determine signal strength. One bar on one rom can be the same signal strength as 6 bars on another. So basically, don't trust the bars.

That definitely is a good point and needs to be taken into account, but that being said, I used a little tweak I found over at HTCevohacks.com to boost my connections. Basically just bypasses the Sprint proxy and speeds things up a little bit.
I will copy and paste the instructions below, all credit being given to HTC Evo 4G Hacks.
Before doing this though you'll need to flash a sprint sense rom or else this method doesn't work.
First, install MSL Reader app from the Market (yes, it’s free) and find the MSL of your HTC Evo 4G or 3D.
Then call ##3282#.
Choose “Edit Mode”.
Enter the MSL code you got earlier for password.
Then goto Advanced->RTSP/HTTP Setting.
Then set RTSP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0.
and set RTSP proxy port to 0.
and set HTTP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0.
and set HTTP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0.
Choose back button, menu button, and hit “Commit Modifications”.
This should get your Evo 4G or 3D rebooted.

You aren't actually "boosting" your signal. You signal is the same as it was before the hack. That hack just bypasses sprint's proxy's when streaming media, which is the ONLY time you will see a difference with that hack
The signal bars on the stock ROM do not accurately represent your overall signal. It only shows call quality signal, not data. CM7, and many other ROMS, use a more true representation.

I have Zooper Widget Pro on my rooted/modded (CM 10.2.0-d2spr) Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3. I've noticed that when I'm on anything other than 4G/LTE, I get sensible values for #NCSIG# and #NCSIGN#. However, when my phone connects to an LTE tower, #NCSIG# jumps to/stays at 99, and #NCSIGN# jumps to/stays at 85 (positive, not negative).
Is there a reason for this, and any fix/workaround? I'm trying to use it to display a progress bar, but when the numbers go wonky like that it's not very helpful. Since my office and home both have varying degrees of LTE coverage, I usually end up with a useless progress bar most of the time
Thanks!
I have similar issues on VZW. NSIG is always 99 and NCSIGN is always 85.....Works for a short time after a reboot but eventually goes back to this.

A.L.2009, what ROM are you running? Try turning off LTE (Settings > Wireless & Networks > More... > Mobile Networks > Network Mode) and select one similar to "CDMA/EvDo auto" (or another one that mentions CDMA but not LTE). If you get more sensible numbers after turning that off, then it's likely a problem with LTE specifically... if not, then I'm stumped
To the devs: I'd be willing to help debug this if you have any special tools to do so
Thanks..tried switching from LTE to CDMA, same problem.
Im running stock/rooted 4.2.2
Not sure if this is your issue but this is how I set up my WiFi and Cell progress bars:
For WiFi progress bar, under the 'Edit Progress Min/Max/Value' setting I have the Min set at 0, value is #NWSIG# and Max is set to 9.
For Cell progress bar, under the 'Edit Progress Min/Max/Value' setting I have the Min set at 0, value is #NCSIG# and Max is set to 31.
The reasoning is that the zooper fields for NWSIG field has values between 0 and 9 while NCSIG has values betwen 0 and 31. NCSIG also shows ASU as a value, but I have no idea what that is. Setting the max value to these settings makes the progress bar seem more usable to me than a setting of 0 to 100.

The progress bars work just fine on any other network (1x, 3g, ehrpd), but when the phone connects to 4g/LTE, the numbers go wonky. I get the feeling this is a CDMA-specific issue, since I'm on Sprint and A.L.2009 is on Verizon. I imagine if it occurred on GSM networks too, it would've gotten more attention by now.
I just posted about this in a thread and a wonderful themer kwerdenker pointed me here Android Source CellSignalStrengthCdma you will have to use #NCSIGN# as for the progress bar code it will look like this or at least its what i did...
Code:
min = $#NCELL#=Sprint?-100:0$ value $#NCELL#=Sprint?#NCSIGN#*-1:#NCSIG#$ max $#NCELL#=Sprint?-75:31$
That code should allow for either DBM (Sprint) or ASU (GSM) i did it on my nexus 5...hope that helps

Yeah, that source code highlights the problem:
Get the LTE signal level as an asu value between 0..97, 99 is unknown

Whenever I'm connected to LTE, the value comes up "99".
That's what I get also on my n5...I just gave up on the asu for CDMA for that reason. I'm sure someone a lot smarter than I has a way but I haven't figured it out yet.. Sorry
Yeah... I can't use dbm either, because it's supposed to be a negative value, but when I connect to LTE it goes to +85

If you use the code i posted it will allow for a progress part to work....you have to basically make it negative. I saw the positive on my LTE on my N5 and that is how i got it to work with a progress bar. However i didn't check to see what the regular signal for voice would show up as...if that is already negative i will make modifications to my code and post it...going to check that right now.
EDIT: I just tested it and voice goes to a negative number so i will make changes to the code and re-post for you guys.

Okay i got the new code for the value section on a progress bar that will allow for the change...my N5 only connects to LTE unless i need to make or get a call then it switches networks from Data to Voice network and thus why i didn't think about the issue you just brought up...
here's the code hope this helps....
Code:
$#NCELL#=Sprint && #NCSIGN#>-1?(#NCSIGN#*-1):#NCSIGN#$ $#NCELL#!=Sprint?#NCSIG#$

That doesn't actually solve the problem; normally (1x, 3G, EHRPD) the values are already negative, ranging from -125 to about -60 (theoretically it could go much higher, but -62 is the best I've ever seen, standing within ~100yd of a tower with LOS). If I just use some math magic to make the invert the positive, it still doesn't resolve the fact that the 85 is an entirely invalid value. However, doing some more Googling, it looks more like it might be a ROM-related issue with Sprint LTE; in other words, ZW gets bad data, and just merrily runs along with it.

I noticed that looking over more of the source code for android...but my last code post above should allow for this goof up in the system.
I have a similar issue with my Droid Turbo on VZW. ASU comes up as -3, but dBm comes up as around -119, which is not my real signal strength. It's breaking one of the indicators on my shiny new widget.
