deleting stock applications - Defy General

can i bring my stock apps back by doing factory presets after i deleted them previously with root explorer?

I don't believe you can, the best practice is to rename them. I just add .ars behind mine. I have also used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze the apps that I don't want. This appears to work also and you an always unfreeze them.

thank you.

[Q] NooB help: Best way to try a new ROM and minimize setup?

I'm new to the rooting, rom'ing, etc and was wondering what the best way is to try a new ROM and minimize setup of all my apps(and their settings) again on the new ROM??
I tried the Warm Z 2.2 ad reloaded my installed apps with Astro but I had to redo all the settings for the apps and where they were on the screens. is thre any way to avoid this and make switching ROM's fast and easy?
THANKS !!
-Chuck
You can use apps like Titanium Backup to backup not only the apps themselves, but their settings. That said, it's generally not a good idea to restore data (i.e. settings) between ROMs. You can introduce some buggy behavior by doing so.
As for backing up your home screens, that is trickier. Widgets? Forget about it. Shortcuts: maybe. Some programs like MyBackup Pro can backup home screens. Some launchers (like LauncherPro) have their own backup features built in for homescreen shortcuts. But even these methods of backing up will be unlikely to restore widgets unless the framework between the ROMs is almost identical.

Ok, so I shouldn't restore my apps w/ settings if I load a different ROM, only the downloaded apps..and then set them all up again?
Would I be OK to continue with Astro or is Titanium any better for this purpose, I have both now... Or should I dump Astro and just use Titanium Pro?
Thanks !!

You can always take a gamble if you want, but yes: only restoring the apps themselves is the safest bet.
If you want to think of it as a spectrum...
Safest > Download apps again from market
Still very safe > Restore apps from Titanium (or Astro, or whatever), but don't restore data
Moderately risky > Restore apps with their data, but don't restore system settings
Very risky > Restore all apps, all data, all system settings

Been a very long time since I used Astro, so I don't know what the functionality is like. That said, backing up apps is not a hard task, so if Astro is working, I'd say there's no harm in continuing to use it.

Not that I have discovered for initial set up of a new rom, but if you make a backup of that rom when switching between ones you have already set up, switching between backups is quick and easy, no additional set up required

[Q] Backup application data

Anyone know of an application that can backup application data together with market links? (for non-rooted phones)
I know TB can do that and I already use that, but now my worry comes in when SE is releasing an update this week and we aren't sure whether we are able to root after this!
I was thinking the same.. I've backed up using mybackup pro.. backs up app and data.. not sure about market links though, but it's the best non rooted back up I've found..

Thanks for the reply.
I've used Mybackup Pro before with my X10, but I it couldn't backup the data unless you provide the "root" access to it and the restoration isn't as good as TB when it comes to rooted phone.
The biggest question here is that when the update is delivered, will we be able to root again using the Gingerbreak? If yes, then I've no problem sticking with TB, but if not then my worries start
I for one am not going to update until i know the new version can be rooted.
Other than that, i can second the recommendation to use mybackup pro. It's not a titanium replacement by any means, but it gets the essentials (sms, calendar, etc etc) done perfectly well (in fact i use it for this sort of thing in preference to TB anyway).

Yep. Agreed.
But here I'm looking at something which can backup the data of the application as well without a rooted phone and restore it in a non-rooted phone.
Any suggestion?
sounds like this needs root to work then..

Disappointed.
Most of the phones out there (Android excluded) can do this. The best example is iPhone; thought I don't like it, I like this feature. That's the whole idea for us to connect to the PC every now and then. I don't know how hard it is for the phone makers to come up with something like this to backup the whole phone, including apps and their data; while they have access to everything since they are the manufacture of the phone.
Every now and then, surely there will be software updates and they will wipe the data. We have to setup it up from scratch and it takes a long time for that and more or less you will loss the application's data; unless you are rooted and use TB to backup; provided the "root" is still available for that software update.
Previously I tried a simple application for backing up the data of the famous game "Angry Birds". This app requires no "root", but does the job pretty well. Now when a third party application can do that means surely the phone maker should be able to do more than that!!
sprite backup is what i used before titanium backup. no need for root, but it stores everything in batch backups...

Does that application have a option to backup application (from market) together with it's data? Am I able to choose which application to backup/restore? Classic example is backup "Angry Birds" with it's completed levels and it's settings.
After the update my phone has become quite slow and freezes at times for 1-2 seconds. I would like to do a factory reset to see whether it can solve the problem but only thing stopping me from doing that is I couldn't find a software (be it a PC based software or and Phone application) that could backup my phone's application together with their data!
Any more advises or help?

Freezing Apps with MyBackup Pro or Titanium Backup

Once you freeze an app, is there a way to keep it from showing up in the play store update list? Or does it have to be removed for it to not show up?
Also, with MyBackup Pro is there a way to remove carrier bloat or is freezing my only option? I currently own a copy of MyBackup Pro and would rather use that than paying for TB.

If your rooted why not just manually remove the bloat?
I guess, since I only recently rooted I didn't realize there was a way to manually remove some of the bloat add-on applications. How would one go about removing them manually?

In titanium backup you have the option to uninstall apps under batch. Just make sure you uncheck everything first then check whatever you want to uninstall.

I guess that is one reason to use TB over MyBackup Pro. Was just trying to save a few dollars and not have to own a copy of both.
Any other way to remove bloat?
Seems I overlooked an Uninstall option in MyBackup Pro.
I'm now looking for a way that uninstalled items do not keep showing updates available in the Play Store. Any options?
TiB will let you disassociate them with Market/Play
27. Can I tell the Market that I do not want to update a specific app?
Yes. Just long-click on an app in the Titanium Backup list and hit “Detach from Market”.

List of bloatware that is safe to uninstall

Just got S-Off'd and I'm rooted with Titanium Backup installed. I know that I can use this app to uninstall some of the bloatware that came with the phone, but I was just wondering if anyone has compiled a list of apps that are safe to uninstall as I don't want to mess anything up. If not, then let's compile that list now. Would appreciate any feedback from users. Thanks!

Over in the Android Development section, GrayTheWolf has already built a script that de-bloats the phone. There is a list of all the apps the script removes in the first post. That would be a good place to start.

Awesome! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
That thread hasn't cleared up whether the debloat script is safe to run. Has it been vetted? Many folks seem to have had problems with it and the loss of functioning tether.

Ah, that'd be an interesting thing to address because tethering is rather important to me. Can I simply choose to uninstall these apps individually via Titanium Backup with the same results as the script?
You should save/freeze, or whatever it is that TB does, and then uninstall. If you have issues, then simply revert. Troubleshooting is far easier that way.

you can also just disable then under Settings > Apps
though for unrooted (like myself) there are some you can't.
perhaps these are ones you shouldn't uninstall?
safest way is to do a batch backup of all system and installed apps, then uninstall via titanium what you think you don't need. If you break something, restore the app.
I haven't looked at the debloated script but most uninstall things I use like nfl app. Usually you can edit the script to your needs before running.

[Q] Titanium Backup

So here's a question for you guys.....................
I have the HTC One M8 and am rooted and S-OFF, as well as ViperOne M8 and Titanium Backup.
Whenever I get an update from Team Venom for ViperOne, I notice it says just as it's finishing the reboot (post-install) that it's upgrading my apps. So does that mean that the backups that I have (for my apps) which are stored in Titanium Backup are no longer current? I don't think the upgrade process affects the backed up data that was done pre-install, so it seems like that data would be outdated at this point?
Please answer if you think you know.
Thank You,

No it doesn't, usually when developers release a new ROM update they also update all of their stock apps on their ROM to the newest versions. Because of that, when you reboot it tends to say that because it is updating the apps for it and or caching them. (this is to my knowledge of how it works, still though your backups are fine)
Hopefully you are only talking user installed apps? Is not a good idea to be restoring system apps.
correct, YOUR apps, that you backed up to TB are current as of the day you backed them up.
once you restore them, via TB, then of course, open play store, and let it check and see if there are any updates to YOUR previously backed up apps.

It is updating any apps that come with the ROM such as the HTC TV app or other HTC apps, TB is not included because it is not one of the pre-loaded apps that the developer included with the ROM. Also as stated above, the TB backups are not touched by this, they stay the same as they were when you made them soo you have to update the backups yourself if you wanted to.
Shadowz,
Ok, that's what I thought. I just needed to hear you say it in a different way to be sure. lol
So anytime there's a new update, I'm gonna need to re-backup all the apps with TB then. Seems like TB is only good if you mess something up and wanna restore the apps' data. When you're just doing an incremental update, or especially a full ROM install, then it's useless. I may just uninstall it.
Thanks Shadowz!

THIS is the proper way to use TB...
I've used TB for years. After flashing clean, I just restore my user apps, data also for some and aside from a few system settings.... I'm right back how I was.
I use Nova, so restoring it's settings puts my home screens right back how they were too.
Not sure why people would want to mess with Nandroid data restores when this whole process above takes hardly any time and never brings issues. ?

Ehh, it was late last night when I posted that, and I was cranky. lol
I don't have the PRO/donate version ($5.99?? geez), so I can only schedule up to 2 days max for automatic backups.
Thanks Stathis.

Hi KJ,
Yeah I noticed that too as I also have Nova.
So you're saying you never do any nandroid backups? Interesting. Where do you save the TB backup files? I don't like saving them on internal storage, so I just transfer them to a flash drive or OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive).
Thanks,

I occasionally do a nandroid. Only for a full restore. And usually just before wiping and Flashing something. I don't always, cause I can flash roms or stock manually just as easy.
And I just keep my TB backups on the device.

KJ,
I see. Ok. I'm still gonna do them, but more for emergencies than anything.
I did that but then one time recently something happened and my internal storage got wiped clean. I save a copy on my external SD card, but then I thought "what if my phone got lost?", and decided to just store it on flash or cloud. Just wish TB would let you store it on THEIR own server so you don't have to worry about doing it manually or automatically elsewhere. The options they have like Google Drive don't offer as much space. I have Google Drive but don't want to give up the space. And I think DropBox is only 1 GIG? There is that Titanium variant that stores them automatically for only $2.99, but that got bad reviews.
Thanks,
RockStar2005
I've used TB for a few years now (paid version). I use it mainly to backup my user data just in case. Right now my M8 is stock (just got it and I wait until my warrenty is up before rooting etc) so I'm not really using it now. When I do root I'll be able to take my user data from a few games I'm playing on my rooted Transformer Prime and put the data on my phone. That's really the only thing I use TB for execpt for freezing bloatware so I can unfreeze, use Voodo Root Keeper (if it works on the device) and get OTA's. User data is always my biggest priority. I can reinstall any apps from the play store. Yes, this can take some time but doing it this way, when I f-up I can pick and choose what apps I put back on and leave off apps that I installed in the past but never use anymore. To each is own I guess. One good example was about a year ago Google updated the standard music app. I hated it. It screwed up all my album art and I hated the new interface. I used TB to restore the older version and it was like it never happened.
