[Q] G2 Gingerbread Update - Rooted Version - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey - I am a currently rooted US T-mobile G2 user pretty unhappy with the current state of Gingerbread stock-style roms available (virtuous g-lite stock version, xboarder's stuff before he quit) - and I am wondering: will someone be releasing a rooted, deodexed and zip-aligned version of today's Gingerbread OTA update?
I doubt anyone but the guy who does it really knows for sure - but does anyone expect someone to do something like that? I know there are so many Gingerbread-like options out already, and that is why I ask.

Before going to Official Froyo, think about this...

Yes, I understand the Official Froyo maybe more stable since it's more updated and complete than the leaked Froyo in custom ROM. But really is it worth the upgrade?? What I mean, when you upgrade to official froyo you will loose your root, and possibly a new updated radio that would maybe need "Paul" time to hack again. Without the root, it may not be possible to change to different ROM. I am pretty sure, once those official FROYO is out...there would be lots of different custom ROM MOD based on Official FROYO available?? Also looking at my past experience with HTC, once this official 2.2 update is available, they wont update very often anymore. It maybe better to stay with custom ROM since those cooks tend to get newer system kernel somewhere. I guess for me, even if the update is out, I will just wait out till someone make new custom ROM based on this official FROYO? cheer...that's just my opinion.

Most, if not all people will be waiting for a rooted version. I'll be amazed if people unroot just to get it, when it'll be modded in no time. The test release by udk is a prime example.

Gingerbread
Agree with the original poster's sentiments. Also worth considering that this could very easily be the last major update for HTC to roll out to the Desire. There's already a newer generation of devices out and HTC have no incentive to keep us at the leading edge. I got a clear taste of this with my previous HTC Magic - dropped by Vodafone like an unwanted toy once they started selling newer devices. Thankfully it was completely unlocked and I could flash all the custom ROMs on that which I liked but since it was a 32B if I had gone official and somehow ended up there I'd have been left behind at 1.6.
I "upgraded" from Hero (which I liked pretty much) to Desire about a month ago, and it's still unrooted. I rooted and installed a custom ROM to my Hero (a couple of weeks before the official 2.1 came out) and I was far from impressed. It became slow and laggy, the available RAM was way below than on the original 1.5 etc. I assume that I should've try other ROMs as well but at a certain point I just got tired so I switched to Desire. I love the way it is. It's fast, responsive and I enjoy all the possibilities of the hardware. I can even impress my iPhone friends with a little smile on my face.
The guy I sold my Hero just updated to the official OTA 2.1 a couple of days ago. Guess what? It's flying! I wouldn't believe it if I couldn't see with my own eyes.
I love what you guys do here. I really do. I'm amazed and impressed with all the work and effort you put in these custom ROMs. I'm reading all the interesting threads, tips, tricks etc. It's good to have a place like this board. It's good to have full control over our handsets, install software others can't. But I kinda like the way HTC puts together and tests its ROMs even if it's bloated with stuff I'll never use. I'll check for updates every hour this weekend Cos I'm eager to try all the new features. Maybe later I'll switch to a custom ROM which is based on the official, but for now I'm focusing on the "Check now" button
even though it hurts to say so.. but I agree

Why would it not possible to root back after unrooting? Since rooting is now riskfree...
What I would like is a standard final realease, rooted and A2SD+'ed, thats it, no other mod`s.
as long as froyo doesn't modify the hboot to a new version, you can always rollback and unroot.

Because the leaked froyo came with a new HBOOT (which was removed by devs here) which at the moment is unrootable. And may be unrootable forever!

Agreed, I finally took the plunge to root and A2SD, the latter of which is amazing Is it really too much to ask for, just to install apps on the SD?
I will wait for Froyo Official-based custom ROMS!

So if someone buy a HTC desire after the update he may not be able to get root ever. Lucky us!

I highly doubt no one is ever going to be able to root if they officially upgrade to 2.2. It will happen, it might just take a while that's all for Paul and co. to do it..
I think that all of you that says that the new Hboot could not be hacked, underestimate many very very skilled peoples knowledge. Just because it isn't cracked now, it not equal to *incrackable*.
I am very certain that it will be cracked or something else and then root access can be achieved again.

[Q] Anyone Know?

Does Anyone know when there will be Rom released with 2.2 with sense? I have seen them for the mt3g. i was just wondering if any dev was working on one. Thanks in advance
t-mo will have to release a 2.2 rom with sense first, then we will be able to make ROMs based off of that, we cannot create something if we do not have the pieces

a few Q's, but not general newb Q's

Ok I just joined sprint and picked up three Evo 4G's for the family, couldn't resist the low price of the phones and service. I was using a Vibrant on T-Mobile but with all the ATT crap being flung around and the service seemed to be experiencing a lot of outages and super slowdowns on data I decided to go ahead and jump.
So with all that I am an experienced Android person and my Q's are for this phone's abilities and not general Android stuff.
Ok I am wondering if 2.3.4 will be released for the Evo?
I am also wondering if the g-talk with video can be installed on the current shipping rom?
Also as I read how to root it and install a new rom, I am wondering if there are any caveats that do not show up in the guides that would be nice to know ahead of time before rooting and installing a new rom/s. I also did a search, but not much came up, but I did find a couple roms that seem to be on a leaked 2.3.4 base?? not sure if that is right since I couldn't find anything about a leaked 2.3.4 anywhere, but I didn't dig to deep.
Thanks for any help with the 2.3.4 and video chat Q.
No ETA on 2.3.4 upgrade. If you have a custom ROM, they come with GTalk that includes video chat.
There are AOSP ROMs that are 2.3.4 but all the Sense ROMS are based on the 2.3.3 OTA.
But, all that needs Root access. And currently a new EVO with 2.3.3 cannot be rooted.

Wow no root on the new 2.3.3?!?! crap, but I imagine it wont take to long to get it hacked.
Is there a way to load up a cooked rom even without root? I imagine not. I ask because it was done way different on the Vibrant.

[Project Cheesecake] Unlocking the DEFY bootloader! - ABANDONED

So we just got the Atrix unlocked, and i dont own a defy, but i think the method could work for you guys as well.
Im gonna need a few things from you guys to check servers, and once i figure out whats up i will be handing out more perfect instructions.
I would like to give credit to navalynt for creating the files use to search the test -clouds for updates.
Anyways. all i need to begin with is a build.prop from your current most up to date stock build.
i will come back in a few hours and check the thread.
also if you guys have a good irc i could use to comunicate with devs i apreciate it.
EDIT: i would like to add that im not promising anything, nor am i asking for donations or devices. i just want everyone to have an unlock.
im using a cm7 nighly build, dunno if that can help, a motorola's froyo version should be better, or not?
keep going the good work!
n i recommend u to contact quarx: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=513620
and/or Epsylon: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=803131
who maintains the CM7 ports to defy
Hmm..I heard that someone told that atrix's methord wont work on defy........may be it would be wrong......
Would the leaked GBs help ?

they could, if you could point me to them that be great
also i need to know whats the latest "OFFICIAL" build is, and get a build.prop for it.
many people doubt there is an unlock, but we can really only know if we look for it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...fy#Android_2.3.4_.28Gingerbread.29_Stock_ROMs
Here are all the links to the different SBF's allso Stock Roms. Do not know if you mean this or need something else.
do you ned build.prop final (Froyo 2.2) or from Beta (Gingerbread 2.3) release?
The Atrix uses a different bootloader, so the method of unlocking that will indeed not work on the Defy.
I need a build.prop for froyo.
No one said we are going to apply the ATRIX bl. Im gonna search for a defy build.

This is the froyo build.prop from the latest 3.4.2-117 UK ROM i pulled it out of a nandroid of this official ROM.
Hope it helps.
P.S. Rename to build.prop
Dunno if it helps, but, the defy loader is X-loader: https://gitorious.org/x-load-omap3/mainline/trees/master
The latest official Froyo would be the SEA15 3.4.3-36-1.7 ? Released date 6 July 2011
here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093352
however I don't have build.prop of it cause I am using CM7
build 3.4.2-117. uk=2.2.1
Build prop from user gommers1978on first page is from 2.2.2 ver(3.4.2-177)

The latest froyo version is 3.4.2-179-2, whose kernel ( 179 ) is also used in CyanogenMod.
BTW, i've attached the relative build.prop file.
UPDATE!
i have not forgot about the DEFY. sorry ive just a bit confuse by the sbf you guys have available and the information on your system.
but i assure you once i figure out a solution for mounting the build.prop safely into my atrix i will begin testing servers.
if anyone would like to get started on doing this themselfs. you need to be on whatever is, the OFFICIAL (not leaked not made up like cm7) build for the defy.
the link is here! use the instructions loosely as of course you are using a different phone. if i had device it be easier for me to search. im working on saving money to buy one.
further this is the original project cheesecake thread that found the unlock for international users. i recommend you take a read and see how they use the difference techniques for searching.
credit goes to navalynt for the search method
I would try, but a the moment i'm on cyanogen.
Maybe when i'll have some time...
Has anyone tried if this method works?
mmmmm,project cheesecake,that sounds delicious....
I would like to try this too but i am not really sure where and what i have to do beacuse all given links are for Atrix.

[Q] Stock google roms

Sorry if this is a noob question but I did quite a bit of searching and could not find anything.
Is it possible to install stock google roms on a DZ? I would really like to install the latest version then have it update itself by OTA. My phone is rooted and currently running Cyanogen Mod 7.1.
Thanks!
Id stick with cm7 from my personal experience its close to stock android Rome and it runs remarkably well

Yes, it is possible to run stock android roms on a DZ, there are several different variants out there right now. Just for example there's virtuous g-lite (look in the dev section or on virtuous' homepage) which is currently on version 2.3.5 I believe. A more up-to-date rom seems to be this one: 2.3.7 (please read the op, some issues still remain).
Though, as far as I know, you will not be able to receive OTAs as these are pushed to your phone by your carrier. If you want to receive OTAs on a DZ you will have to revert back to a stock sense rom.
Any ROM that works on the G2 works on the Desire Z (as long as you are rooted and S-Off, which you obviously are if you are on CM7). So if you want, just go to the Developement section and you will find pre-rooted versions of the G2 AOSP ("stock Google") ROMs. But make sure the ROM is pre-rooted. If you install an "official" ROM that is not pre-rooted, you will lose root, and need to go through the whole process again.
