Yes, I understand the Official Froyo maybe more stable since it's more updated and complete than the leaked Froyo in custom ROM. But really is it worth the upgrade?? What I mean, when you upgrade to official froyo you will loose your root, and possibly a new updated radio that would maybe need "Paul" time to hack again. Without the root, it may not be possible to change to different ROM. I am pretty sure, once those official FROYO is out...there would be lots of different custom ROM MOD based on Official FROYO available?? Also looking at my past experience with HTC, once this official 2.2 update is available, they wont update very often anymore. It maybe better to stay with custom ROM since those cooks tend to get newer system kernel somewhere. I guess for me, even if the update is out, I will just wait out till someone make new custom ROM based on this official FROYO? cheer...that's just my opinion.

Most, if not all people will be waiting for a rooted version. I'll be amazed if people unroot just to get it, when it'll be modded in no time. The test release by udk is a prime example.

Gingerbread
Agree with the original poster's sentiments. Also worth considering that this could very easily be the last major update for HTC to roll out to the Desire. There's already a newer generation of devices out and HTC have no incentive to keep us at the leading edge. I got a clear taste of this with my previous HTC Magic - dropped by Vodafone like an unwanted toy once they started selling newer devices. Thankfully it was completely unlocked and I could flash all the custom ROMs on that which I liked but since it was a 32B if I had gone official and somehow ended up there I'd have been left behind at 1.6.
I "upgraded" from Hero (which I liked pretty much) to Desire about a month ago, and it's still unrooted. I rooted and installed a custom ROM to my Hero (a couple of weeks before the official 2.1 came out) and I was far from impressed. It became slow and laggy, the available RAM was way below than on the original 1.5 etc. I assume that I should've try other ROMs as well but at a certain point I just got tired so I switched to Desire. I love the way it is. It's fast, responsive and I enjoy all the possibilities of the hardware. I can even impress my iPhone friends with a little smile on my face.
The guy I sold my Hero just updated to the official OTA 2.1 a couple of days ago. Guess what? It's flying! I wouldn't believe it if I couldn't see with my own eyes.
I love what you guys do here. I really do. I'm amazed and impressed with all the work and effort you put in these custom ROMs. I'm reading all the interesting threads, tips, tricks etc. It's good to have a place like this board. It's good to have full control over our handsets, install software others can't. But I kinda like the way HTC puts together and tests its ROMs even if it's bloated with stuff I'll never use. I'll check for updates every hour this weekend Cos I'm eager to try all the new features. Maybe later I'll switch to a custom ROM which is based on the official, but for now I'm focusing on the "Check now" button
even though it hurts to say so.. but I agree

Why would it not possible to root back after unrooting? Since rooting is now riskfree...
What I would like is a standard final realease, rooted and A2SD+'ed, thats it, no other mod`s.
as long as froyo doesn't modify the hboot to a new version, you can always rollback and unroot.

Because the leaked froyo came with a new HBOOT (which was removed by devs here) which at the moment is unrootable. And may be unrootable forever!

Agreed, I finally took the plunge to root and A2SD, the latter of which is amazing Is it really too much to ask for, just to install apps on the SD?
I will wait for Froyo Official-based custom ROMS!

So if someone buy a HTC desire after the update he may not be able to get root ever. Lucky us!
Sent from my HTC Desire using my fingers.
I highly doubt no one is ever going to be able to root if they officially upgrade to 2.2. It will happen, it might just take a while that's all for Paul and co. to do it..
I think that all of you that says that the new Hboot could not be hacked, underestimate many very very skilled peoples knowledge. Just because it isn't cracked now, it not equal to *incrackable*.
I am very certain that it will be cracked or something else and then root access can be achieved again.

buying a desire soon and doing some researching and since the official froyo update is out, should i root or just update it?
Root and then install Neophyte 1.6. It's a custom rom that gives you a good stockish version of Froyo plus all the fixes that are needed making better than OTA Froyo.
OTA Froyo is buggy and should not have been released imo.
root but only if you understand it or if will be of any benefit to you, as if your phone breaks, the warrenty will be void!!!
I suggest buying it, keeping it stock - as htc will update it with fixes, and then seeing if root is really needed for you??? hope this helps, and btw, there are polls to see what roms peopls use on here so dont take one persons opinion in which rom to use, ie i used open desire v1.0c and i prefer that but everyone has different opinions.
I have rooted and updated to froyo but only because I am an eager beaver lol If I was you and not on Virgin Mobile then I would just wait for the OTA update and not bother with root tbh
@aunger90 do you have a link to this poll?
I bought a Desire HD from H.K. The rom is RUU_Ace_HTC_Asia_WWE_1.32.707.6.
I tried to cook the rom become Taiwanese rom step by step.
Using visionary to temproot ===>prmeroot===> s-off
Everything is fine.
However,I cook the wrong rom RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3.
I think it becomes UK rom.
Now, I want to do the same step to cook my DHD to be Taiwanese rom again but it doesn't work.
When I use Visionary to do temproot, it takes too long time.
The screen comes black and hard to use.
I did't Visionary several times, however it still doesn't work.
Can any one help me. please.
So I guess your phone is 1.72 firmware now?
Bad luck you can't root it.
Yes, I am 1.72 now.
so, Does it mean there are no way to root now?
There are no way to root now. U must wait for the solution.
It bewilders me how people manage to read the threads on how to root their phones, but never manage with the threads that tell them not to flash the 1.72 ROM's. I fail to understand how they miss the various threads.
I can imagine what a disaster it is to overlook this.
So if they officially release the android 2.2.1 update for my region and I update to it, it will also update the software to the 1.72 ROM.
Does this mean I will not be able to root (and therefore flash) to other ROM until someone here figures out a way to break it?

When it comes do not install it. Better to use a custom rom which is based off of it. Such as the one in my sig. Then you get the best of both worlds - rooted Android 2.2.1.

I just wonder if someone can help me to fix this trouble.
Maybe this is a chance to help me improve my English.

got it! but is it worth upgrading to the 2.2.1 update? Any performance gains? I'm not sure about what rom should I be on for fastest speed, stability with the sense ui?

Difficult to say....it should have some better performance and the camera should work a bit better.
however, in my case, when recording in HD I still have some lags sometimes (although they seem to be less in both length and frequency).
As far as normal performance, I was running a OC kernel which I cannot use now anymore, so performance will not be noticeably better (might even be a bit less).
as Dr.m0x said: get a custom rom with 1.72 integrated...works fine and you keep root
Any news? Or nothing yet ? So no rooted phone for those who updated 2.2.1...
I have had rooted phone with stock ROM and when appeared some update of OS, I installed it and then I found out, that rooting no longer works I must now only wait.
Has any from cooked ROMs better camera software? The stock camera app is OK, but I am missing possibility to set JPEG compression, which is in my oppinion too high and destroyes fine details in each picture.

It has been possible to downgrade your firmware and then gain root for a week now. There is a sticky topic in the development section.

And is there any way to backup my unrooted phone?
As far as I know there is not a way to do a full backup when the phone is unrooted. I fell for 1.72. Luckily I already did a titanium backup not long prior. The instructions given on the developers area of the forum are good though. The process does work.
This is probably a stupid question but once htc evo gets gingerbread or ever gets it will my phone tell me that 2.3 gingerbread is available? then if that dose happen will i become unrooted? I'm new to android i have the fresh rom. i did remember reading somethning about if u updated to 2.2 from 2.1 you become unrooted.
You won't get any update notification if you are running a custom ROM. I'm sure Fresh will get updated to GB once it's released and then you can just flash the updated ROM to get it.
Yeah once HTC puts out Gingerbread for the Evo then Fresh will update accordingly but from rumors I hear the Evo might only get Ice Cream
Yay... More waiting...!!!
</sarcasm>
Yup apperently more waiting or not update at all if the evo doesn't get an update by march im pretty sure HtC will be done with it, I meant they probably annouce the Evo 2 and for people to.buy it they probably wont update this one, plus I don't really care about GB it doesn't wow me but I do care about the new sense, the themes and the extra features are nice for sense, I hope we get that at least, I don't feel like spending too much.money this year so I think I ma pass summer upgrade this time around

if u are using a Fresh ROM its 1 of the select few roms i know of that has its own built in UPDATER, look in apps. Update through that you should be fine.
when or if gingerbread becomes official it will be front page stuff.
so i was reading from http://blogs.computerworld.com/18077/android_23_upgrade_list and found that the desire 2.3 was released today @ http://developer.htc.com/ ! although i am excited about it, i am also nervous to try it. as much as i would like the update i dont want to lose sms and mms features.. i wasnt sure if this was already known and also if i am going to be yelled at in case there is another thread already, if so i apologize. hopefully this brought some good news to some people?
there's loads of threads on this i'm afraid.
i dont think many people will lose sms still - its just a warning, as i think in some cases the settings aren't in the rom for all carriers
i had a feeling, im kind of weary on updating for that reason though. ive tried permrooting, but i cant find a solid way, ive got a visionary temproot, but id like to be able to flash to another rom that has gingerbread.
dude, did you even took a second to look at the forums ?
many threads on the official 2.3 already
hell it has even been rooted etc.
just a quick glance, so no not really lol. but on the update link it says that this isnt supported in North America...if i try to update, what do you think will happen?
When are we going to get Official GB RUU for Desire????

This is the 2.3 we will get for the Desire, and for me it works just fine. Better in every respect than 2.2 on my phone.
feedback from someone here that installed it:
All installed, feels mildly quicker but that’s about it and some of the buttons are a little more stylish

Lots of people in Taiwan already install the new 2.3. Best thing about this build is the carrier specifiec APPs are removed. A very clean ROM for people need more memory.
I'll wait until this has been throughly hacked. I need Data2EXT to live.
I take it you all realise it can't even be rooted yet? They updated the HBOOT so now rooting method, well as of yet. If you really want it, there are some that available that are pretty much that ROM with it rooted over in development..
Hello all,
I like many others, I have installed the new GB ROM from the RUU supplied by HTC and it is "OK". However, i would like something else.
I have seen many guide to install ROMS and it seems more or less clear.
My problem, and maybe the problem for other noobs if the fact that there are so many ROMs out there. It is difficult to know which one to take.
For example, I am looking for plain old stock android 2.3 for the desire. No sense, no extra HTC apps. Just what google would have on the nexus 1. But, I cant figure out which ROM fits that.
Any ideas?
What would be great is sticky which lists the ROMs and their main features for all us noobs. Unless there is one already and I didnt see it
Get Oxygen Rom mate its nice and basic , if u want to go too basic get DevNull
But for starters i think u shud go with oxygen
Pm me if u want to discuss any other details

Well, if you installed official Gingerbread 3.14.405.1 RUU, you can't get root (yet). No root means that you can't install custom rom.

watch the video tutorial too - but it sounds like you want an AOSP rom
Yup, you definitely wanna try Oxygen + it was recently updated to Android 2.3.5.
It's sense free, all bloatware removed, very fast & minimalistic.
http://forum.oxygen.im/viewtopic.php?id=149 (it wasn't updated on XDA yet, but you can download it from there)
CyanogenMod7 will also fit you.
Should have read into what you were doing before you updated. You can't root now, which means no custom ROMs for you. HTC updated HBOOT so no more rooting for the time being. You're stuck with it till someone cracks it. Unlucky dude.
My recommendation:
Sense (2.1+3.0) : InsertCoin 1.0.9
AOSP: Oxygen
no MIUI from me...sorry..
Thanks for all the replies. I am pretty sure it is only a matter of days or weeks at most until I can root. I recall the same situation last update.
It sounds like oxygen is the way to go. Once the root is available I will give it a shot. Thanks.
