[Q] Gingerbread update broke my phone - android.process.acore - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I got my Gingerbread update last night, 2.3.3, bringing the HTC software version to 2.42.405.2 - however every few seconds I get a pop-up saying that android.process.acore has stopped. As I understand it from the (admittedly small) bit of research I've done, this contains the contacts database - and it crashing means I can't use the phone, people or messaging apps, so my phone right now is a glorified browser and twitter client, with a camera and an annoying popup every few seconds.
I've contacted HTC support but I don't hold my breath for anything more useful than a hard reset - if they tell me to do this then I may as well get a new phone (I was planning to anyway, so may just bring that plan forward).
Some solutions I've read involve removing the account that the contacts database is associated with, but I keep my contacts on the phone, and though I have a Google account set up, it won't sync my contacts anymore because of this problem (I know this because a friend changed her number the other day and when I view the contacts on gmail, it still says her old number, which I deleted. If I try to remove the google account, the phone tells me it's needed and I would need to factory reset my phone to do so.
I am NOT prepared to factory reset my phone to fix this issue - the same way I would not be prepared to format my harddrive to fix most issues. I'm going to try and backup my contacts to my pc in the meantime, but is there anyone out there who can help me?

Factory Reset

I think I'm going to do a reset, but thought I would seek advice first before I go ahead and do it.
What steps should I take before resetting?
I've been having problems with my contacts with gmail, and how my phone doesn't appear to sync (ie I add a contact to me phone, and the new contact doesn't show up on gmail later when I check).
So, what should I do?
Get an app to backup any text messages, make a good note of home screen layouts so you can get em back how you want.
Apps that store any customisation on the phones memory are going to revert to defaults, anything that stores to SD should be OK.
The phone will remember things like custom background/wifi passwords as they're sync'd to the cloud.
contacts require relinking!!!!
I did a factory reset today and I had to re0link all my phone contacts to my facebook contacts manually (again like when I just got the phone) is there any app or other way to avoid that? not that I'm planning to reset my device very often but it'll be good to know.
If your contact names are the same on the phone and on Facebook, it figures it out for itself.
not all of them are, even the ones that ARE the same the phone doesnt link automatically nor suggests as links! I copied my contacts to my SD card but I dunno if I copy them from card again later would they be all sorted like they are now or should I do it again!

com.android.htccontacts FC's

So, I am not really sure how long my phone has been doing this since I have not added a contact in some time, however now whenever I try to add a name to a contact (i can add a contact number...but not their name) i get "The application People (process com.android.htccontacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
Sooo I cannot update / add new contacts.
Running stock EVO, non-root. Anyone seen anything similar? I tried searching but was unable to locate anything similar
I've never run into this problem on a non-rooted phone.
As a workaround, you can try adding the contacts to your Google account, they should then sync with your phone automatically.
I've been doing a bit more google-digging, and have also been removing some random apps (cleaning house?) but I also seem to FC com.android.settings after *every* uninstall.
One suggestion I read blamed launcherpro so I have removed that, however it did not help (now I get to re-do all my widgets )
ah well...If I do manage to find something I'll post what I find for others...also I found a similar problem (I'm totally going to piggy back this guys thread here http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2375527 )
This same issue just started happening to me as well unrooted froyo evo and I'm not able to add a name to any new contact, already did a hard reset a week ago to fix other problems I don't want to have to do it again. If anyone has any info please share some because this is really upsetting
Solution to ----- process com.android.htc contacts has stopped unexpectedly.
I had the same problem on HTC HD2 Android 2.2. I solved as follows:
Source: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=6786a5dc2dab4183&hl=en
Go to Settings - accounts and sync
turn off auto sync and then remove your facebook account from the "manage accounts"
Go back into the "people" application and go to "online directories" (the little globe) then go to facebook. re-enter your details.
hopefully after resetting it all. the problem should go away.
the annoying thing is, you have to go back through and link all your contacts to their facebook accounts again.
I have done this and it all seems to be working.

[Q] com.htc.socialnetwork.facebook force close when listing facebook contacts

I'm getting this really annoying problem for the last few days after a rom update. Whenever I access the Facebook directory in People (online directories tab), a message popup:
The application Facebook for HTC sense (process com.htc.socialnetwork.facebook) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close.
I've tried everything below but nothing works:
1. Remove Facebook account and add it again
2. Clear data and cache of the app
3. Try flashing another ROM
4. Unroot to original ROM
I think the problem is with my Facebook friend list but I can't figure it out. Has anyone experience the same problem as mine? I have around 400 friends in Facebook.
Update1: If I choose "View" in the Menu, the number of Facebook contacts is correct. Some of the facebook contact have been synched with photo, but still I cannot access the Facebook contact list.
No reply. I guess I'm on my own to solve this.
I did a google search and this came up I am having the same problem did you find a solution?
I am in. Just notice this problem too
I found removing the fb for android (?), and doing a full sync and link contacts help.
Really sure for the linking contacts step. Since i notice that fc happens everytime i use it to those with multiple contact (same phone, mail, etc) but not yet linked.
Occassionally, my phone will say something like find multiple contact bla bla bla. I just choose link em all. Now i rarely get fc

My problem is similar... HTC Evo 4G (original EVO), (being an admitted NOOB to the android arena), I rooted my phone... then had to unroot, and return to Sprint after falling out of the car window, and being run over by my back tire, (damned dogs, jumping up, happy to see me!). Sprint's techs said that if I didn't have the triple layer Seidio Extended case on it, it would have crushed the phone completely). As it was, my screen was broken, and I had to have the phone un-rooted to get the service.
Got the phone back ($37 for the repairs, Thanks Sprint!), and re-rooted her, and back in business... everything worked... until I couldn't find the root manager, I had used last time, so started using Root Explorer. I bit more advanced, and less noob friendly, if you ask me... as I was deleting bloatware, I deleted both Facebook AND Facebook for htc sense... I got the sense ver. back, and synce with my contacts by setting up the account again... only thing is, I can't upload pics. I could before, just can't now.
Only thing different I can recall doing this time, over last, was getting rid of Friend stream and a few other things I didn't last time (football, nascar, for example). Admittedly, I deleted things that didn't look like they belonged with any apps I was keeping. So, who out there knows what files may be associated with uploading photos to FB, via htc sense? I have the actual app, as old as it may be... was this one ever updated from 2010? I'm not looking forward to re-flashing the phone, just to restore one issue... but I will if I have to.
Thanks, in advance!

You have a HTC EVO 4G. So please ask in the forum for this phone.

[Q] "Account wasn't found. It may have been removed." - Exchange Server

Hi all - I searched for references to this issue, but haven't found anything yet. Hope someone here can help.
I've been using my Galaxy Nexus (LTE / Verizon) since mid December, locked, unrooted, vanilla - and it's been great. I've been using the native email apps for my GMail account and my work/corporate account on our company's Exchange Server. All has worked perfectly so far. First sign of something weird happened last night.
Last night I backed up, rooted and unlocked my GNex (using the WugFresh utility). I followed the directions closely -- all worked pretty much perfectly. As suggested, I took 2 backups: first without system apps and settings, and the 2nd including them. After I was done rooting and unlocking, I restored the big backup with system apps and settings. Only thing I noticed is that passwords are apparently not part of the settings that can be saved/restored (makes sense!), so I had to reenter credentials for my email apps.
This done, I sync to both GMail and Exchange Server, receive and send mail just fine. Only weird thing is that when I tap the EMail icon to start up the email client that talks to Exchange Server, in addition to opening up my inbox properly, I ALSO see two error messages in sequence:
"Account wasn't found. It may have been removed."
and
"Folder wasn't found. It may have been removed."
The errors then fade, and email is perfectly usable.
I'm guessing that some folder and account entry was restored along with the apps from my backup, and that whatever these pointed to no longer exist, and were superseded by they email app when I reconnected to the Exchange Server during setup after rooting / unlocking.
I've looked - and only see a single account configured in the app -- the correct one. I've checked in Settings / Apps, and there are no options to clear data or cache.
I'm wondering if I should delete the one account I see and re-add it...not sure if that will make a difference.
Anyone have a clue what's going on, and what I might do about it?
thanks in advance,
Jon

In the end, I wound up doing a factory reset on the phone. I was tempted to delete and recreate the account, but I'm convinced there was a phantom (non-existent?) folder / account that the email client kept trying to refer to and that this would have persisted. A factory reset cured the issue, and this time I did NOT restore my entire backup including system apps and data. Instead, I let Google Play and Amazon App store reinstall 99% of my apps, leaving me 3 or 4 that I had to do by hand. In the end it didn't take long at all to do this, and result is a happy Galaxy Nexus once more.

Hi, just wanted to let you know what the solution was in my case. I was messing around with everything, wasting two full days with about 100 times recreating the account, trying to restore/replace Mail/ExchangeServices app/data in various different ways, factory reset, reflashing system, etc. etc. ... nothing helped!
Finally, a few minutes ago I got it: Just recreate the stupid homescreen link! I never thought about trying to start the Mail application via "all apps". If I did (earlier), I would have seen (earlier) that the message does not appear then. It only appears when starting it via my homescreen link, which is actually a widget (looking like a normal app link), configured to open a certain folder of a certain account. So the actual problem was just that this widget could not find the "old" account anymore (probably because some account id changes if an account is deleted and recreated). The reason I've been fooled over and over again (even after factory resets and system flashes) is because I always restored my homescreen stuff in one way or another, so I always used the same old broken link.
D'OH!
Hope that next time someone comes across this issue this post will help. Currently there seems to be no (other) solution to this on the internet. At least I did not find anything in the past two days.
Thanks for posting an easy solution!

Thank you so much. I just had to recreate my account settings (5 of them since Ihave corporate but also use exchange settings for hotmail) and hated to see this message (and a second one similar but about a folder who could not be found). I removed the icon on the home screen and put the Email app (not the widget to avoid the same problem in the future) back and not more error! I really did not want to reset my phone.

[Q] multiple issues: can't install app updates, can't sync

I'm helping a friend who has done a nice job at messing up her GSIII. Before I go try and fix everything, I thought I'd check if I'm going down the right path.
1) Cannot install market app updates. The updates download, but install fails on all of them. Was going to wipe the Market cache and data, to see if that fixes this problem. If not, then I will uninstall Play updates. Is there another known fix for this?
2) Can't sync google contacts, calendar, etc... I had this problem before. For me, I believe it was that I added Samsung Services to my skyrocket, which then broke all other syncing. This phone has FB, Twitter, Dropbox, and Samsung Services all syncing. I disabled the syncing of everything other than google, but did not uninstall anything. Did not fix the issue yet. Next, I guess, would be to remove the other sync accounts and see what happens.
3) Related to 2) above? When Trying to re-enable Google Contacts Sync, an error stating that she must log in to her Google account to sync is displayed. The text is in this dialog box, so it's a bit hard to read. It will not take her password however. I suppose she could be using an incorrect password (she's totally non-technology oriented). I've asked her to go to a computer and log into google to validate her password (have not heard back yet).
I'm thinking that it might be wise to simply do a factory reset on the phone after manually backing up a few things, but would like to see if we can get this fixed easily without going that route. Any help is appreciated!
my 2 cents: keep it simple, document the things she has on the phone, factory reset and begin fixing issues from there. based on the issue description you've provided, you (she) could be chasing your tail trying to enable/disable, install/uninstall things to fix (as you described) multiple issues. and yes, i'm speaking from experience (lol). my cousin did something similar because she wanted a particular theme on her rooted SGS3. she was 90% there. after 5 hours of troubleshooting, we agreed to factory reset and reload apps, email, etc., and 1.5 hours later issue was resolved. good luck!
