GingerBread Changelog - Desire General

I don't mean to irritate the community, but if I asked this on any of the GB thread, my post would have been lost and I think a thread like this is needed for us that are like "meh" about this and we would only like to know the changes.
So, please list only the changes on the 2.3 version compared to the latest 2.2
Thanks.

From what I read so far:
Gingerbread 2.3.3
Sense 1.9 (Few tweaks here and there but nothing special) (as Zane detailed, fastboot mode, reboot in power menu)
Facebook apk removed (can be downloaded from market)
teeter apk removed (can be reinstalled from provided APK)
flashlight apk removed (can be reinstalled from provided APK)
Most Wallpapers removed (can be saved on to sdcard)
HBoot upgraded
Runs on branded software (so will remove all the branded junk, effectively debranding your phone)
Slight partition size changes (around 19MB removed from /data)
Performance upgrade (as Zane mentioned below)
Newer Flash, gapps (gmail, maps etc.) - as mcgon1979 pointed out
Sorry if anything above is wrong.

Fastboot mode
Reboot in power menu
Performance upgrade

Saw this on the developer site:
*Will this release remove the ability to send SMS / MMS like in the disclaimer?*
Only certain regions, specifically the ones listed below, will have some functionality removed. For the majority of regions, there is no impact to your SMS / MMS functionality.
*Why is this only for developers?*
Due to the complicated nature of the update we suggest only expert users proceed. We have provided the update in as user friendly way as possible and also included the instructions in the download file but we were unable to provide the update by our usual over the air method.
*When can I download the upgrade for my phone?*
You can still access the download at http://developer.htc.com for the upgrade for your phone, unless you are in the regions listed below.
*Will HTC issue an over the air (FOTA) for HTC Desire update to Gingerbread?*
No, this downloadable RUU is the official update to your phone. The update required that we conserve space by removing customizations and wallpapers, we had to release the update as a downloadable update.

I have to give my NOOB feedback on this upgrade. I just finished setting up my phone again after upgrade.
The upgrade is great, because I now have 90mb free with all the same applications installed, I had 18mb free before?!
First impressions...
123mb free internal after upgrade
The "move to SD card" funcitons ALOT better now.
Many of my applications take up even less internal memory than before. It seems they can move more of the app to the SD?
Latest Flash already installed
Latest google maps included
Latest youtube app included
Latest gmail app included
(all these installs I had installed separately before and they took up 30mb at least)
keyboard has nice zoom feature when editing text, but do install Stephen Lins gingerbread keyboard. You still keep the text selection and updated zoom feature.
without question its noticably faster scrolling around.
I cannot understand the complaints. I could not have asked for it to work any better IMHO.

Are there also noticeable differences between the leaked gb rom and this final version?

Can someone who already upgraded his/her phone advise...
1-sense version (1.9 or 2.0 or 2.1)?
2-is there second tab for quick settings available in notification area.
3-is the new GB keyboard with trace function (or whatever it is called) available in this Desire specific fw?
4-slow scrolling issue in web browser solved, or improved for better performance?
5-the camera app renewed and still supporting 720p recording?

What about the radio? Is it the same as on froyo 2.2? Or a updated one?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the flip clock now has the flip animation; can anyone confirm or deny?

Confirmed. Very fluent animation.

Yes, it has.
Plus:
- smaller fonts;
- black notification area icons;

Almost nothing change in the Sense interface. It's still the original Sense from the Desire with small tweaks, which are almost not noticeable.

Is it my imagination or the transition between home screens is less fluid than before? Less frames of animation. With static wallpapers, where it was flying before, now it doesn't feel so smooth.

I noticed also that transition of homescreens aint smooth

The transitions between screens and menus are super fast and fluid on my Desire. I have nt seen them this fast on 2.1 or 2.2 in the past.
Some small icon changes on sense. gmail notification icon. power settings icons. etc. other than that its the same sense. but some menus (such as the browser settings) are much smaller so you can view them on one screen which is much nicer.
I'm not sure what HTC did with the storage thing but its much much better. I cannot say that enough. I had 18mb free internal before, and now with all the same applications and contacts etc I have 85mb free now!
There is a nicer "storage use" option in the Manage applications settings section too.
The upgrade comes with latest flash, gmail, google maps, youtube etc. so I did not need to update or install any of those apps to internal which saved at least 30 or 40mb!!!
The update is actual aswesome. I never expected sense 2.3, but I just wanted some small improvements and faster UI. I got that. It's much faster, loads more internal space, few nicer UI touches and latest android version. I am very impressed and happy.
Any questions about the upgrade etc please ask and I'll check on my phone or tell you .

again, I have just checked this a few times now. I cannot get a single stutter or lack of smoothness. It's 100% fluid and perfect. And scrolling through applications page is smooth too. not a single stutter. In my opinion its definitely smoother than it ever was. ?
should I be doing something special to see this slow transition? cannot repro it here.

Can anybody confirm this? We need some good, pertinent reviews of this update. This thread seems perfectly suited for such a purpose.
@mcgon1979 - are you sure that the memory increase is not due to not having to install flash, the new market etc.?

Aqtrans' CM-5.07 port for Kaiser/Vogue! [v1.2] [5/27]

This is my port of Cyanogen's latest Eclair build, v5.07-stable.
It is basically mssmison's 5.07-test3 build updated, I used the same process he did to port this one.
Included Apps:
-Connectbot
-Astro
-RogueTools
-LinPack
-HomeSwitcher
Notes:
-No major problems found so far (besides Eclair-specific problems like the Camera not working).
-Speed is comparable to other Eclair builds, maybe even a bit zippier at times.
-It should be fully compatible with any themes/mods made for Cyanogenmod v5.07-stable. (Although my attempt at flashing this theme sent my phone into an "android.power wakeup" loop, so be cautious!)
--Darkstar theme isn't working either, thx for trying @thebulletfromhell!
-It is set to 120DPI by default, so if running anything other than 320x240, you'll have to use RogueTools to adjust it. I am currently running it at 320x240x120dpi and haven't experienced many problems, except the top and bottom of the Dialer are cutoff, button's still reachable though. (If someone wants to help me fix this, please do, I just don't know where to start)
-Wifi support for the Kaiser is built in, should work out of the box!
-Starting with v1.2, Userinit.conf is added to the root of your SD, by default it has 16MB of Compcache, but this can be adjusted by editing the file.
Download! [Last updated on 5/29/10]
Changelog:
v1.3
-Removed userinit.conf, now everything is run directly from /system/bin/userinit.sh
-32MB Compcache by default
-Removed overclocking from the get-go. You can set it manually via RogueTools.
-Userinit.sh now renice's com.android.phone to try and improve ringing delay.
v1.2.1
-Removed redundant wlan.ko
-Replaced wlan.ko with kallt_kaffe's
-Reverted a change to userinit.sh that was causing awful performance
v1.2
-Removed Dropbox, Speedtest, Twicca, Shazam, 3Banana Notes, and LiveWallpapers
-Added Camera back (Fixes FC when trying to crop a wallpaper)
-Fixed Facebook Sync
-Userinit.conf is added to the root of SD card on first boot. This allows you to control Compcache, swap, and many other settings.

Woah, it's weird being in a different forum.
What is updated in this new version (1.1)? I'm still running the first one you posted in the Vogue forums (on a Vogue) and it's working great.

The updated version has wifi working for Kaiser, and some compcache tweaks done to /system/bin/userinit.conf. The first version I think I disabled compcache entirely, and it really showed once you got the build fully loaded.
any screens? how to install themes on Kaiser? Little guide please...
just downloaded going to give it a try
all live wallpapers dont work and show force close (exclude polar clock)
but its cool and fast (default it set at 450MHz and i set it to 500MHz)
Bench at 500MHz: MFLOPS:2.141
Times: 2.53s
Norm Res: 3.36
Precision: 2.224...
Maybe you add-in many of not neccessary app..
and one very good thing.. i have i think 320x428 and 120DPi in RogueTools. and its less blurry than thats sets in myn
Congrats for good rom.
exist CM with sense 2.1 on kaiser?
Compared to super eclair it has a few advantages:
-language dutch is included and fully working
-more options: look at call settings.
-market is fully working (for now), but no paid apps (super eclair market broke after using a time, not all apps can be found).
But less free ram.
Not really worth upgrading for me (I have 2 kaisers).
i've installed this build on my kaiser and it works great.
tested the wifi, the market, both work great. bluetooth turns on but i haven't had the chance to send or receive any files or to connect it to my wireless headsets.
did not test the data yet.
installed helix launcher and i think it moves a little bit faster than the regular home screen.
thank for the upload

Here's a guide to installing to NAND. The build is not themed at all, so you can check out the official Cyanogen thread for screenshots, they should look identical (besides a smaller res).

Yeah I just noticed the Live Wallpapers crash, didn't try this out before. Not sure if it's possible to fix it, I don't remember them working on any other Eclair builds.
Also, I noticed that /system is running low on space, so I will definitely try to trim some fat by removing pre-installed apps.

Not that I know of. But there is a QVGA Android phone with Sense coming out sometime this summer, and I'm sure someone will attempt to port it.
From the vogue thread...
Great build, I'm running it right now, and it thus far seems to be fast and stable! (bumped up the o/c to 500)
Two pieces of feedback...
If you can get facebook sync to work with the most current facebook app (the one with the "inbox" button rather than the "take photo" button it would be amazing. As of now, the only way to get facebook sync to work is to run the Moto Droid apk, which is the previous version.)
Anyway to get full market from the getgo? I have marketenabler working, but it isn't always consistent.
That being said, amazing build. Good work.

A few known issues;
* Facebook from market breaks sync for Market users (see forum for alternative apk) - only on Dream, Sapphire is OK. Blame Facebook.

I'll look into including whatever alternate APK in the next build.
Also I found that taking out the Camera app causes Gallery to FC when trying to crop a wallpaper, so I'll fix that as well.
I just got a text message from the 24th of this months with super ecalir lite, I don't know if this version hzs those issues too?

The darkstar theme hasn't been released for 5.0.7 stable. The most current release is for test5. This may be why it's not working for you
I tried mssmison's test 3 out, and it was problematic. A lot of stuff would end up resetting the phone, back to the start up animation. Haven't tried this one yet, but my experience with Eclairs have been bad so far.
Wish there was a way to run Android on both NAND and SD cards. That way, I can test them out on the SD card, without destroying my NAND installation.
Running this port since yesterday and I must say I'm really impressed. Fast, responsive and also it seems not to drain battery as fast as other builds.
Any chance of getting Corporate Calendar in the next version (currently Exchange sync works only for Mail and Contacts in this build).
Version 1.2 posted! Changelog in the OP.
I tried adding the modded Market, but it kept FC'ing whenever an app would go to install. Looking at the thread, it seems like a known issue, without a fix that I could find

Suggestions for 1.3
- Remove /system/etc/wifi/wlan.ko (not needed)
- Replace wlan.ko /system/lib/modules/wlan.ko with the attached version (I believe it works better for Polaris users)
I was about to suggest increasing the wlan scan interval but I noticed that you hade allready done that.
I've had problems with builds that have sensors.msm7k.so all by itself so I added the sapphire sensors before I installed v1.1 as a precaution but I'll try without doing that once I reinstall with v1.2 and I'll let you know how it goes.

Are we finally happy or not? (FroYo)

So how do you feel in general after the update?
- Was it worth it?
- Can we say that our Desire got significantly faster?
- Are we happy now after 3 days of refreshing and checking for updates?
not happy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741566
Hell yeah i am happy.
This will give the Chef's a better base for their custom sense rom's.
Now we only need the sourcecode released
Overall Im happy, my phone performs just as well if not better (some videos played through RockPlayer are also smoother), and the new features are nice, on top of personally having had no issues.
Obviously would still like another update with the promised xvid/divx however, and preferably if they decide to call it a 'media' update; it'd be nice if they extended codec support to h264, aac etc.
So how do you feel in general after the update?
- Was it worth it? - Without doubt!
- Can we say that our Desire got significantly faster? - Yes, also scrolling and animations are smoother but that's not everything that's good about FroYo
- Are we happy now after 3 days of refreshing and checking for updates? - Hell I am!!!
Really happy with the update, the phone flies, I just tested ChromeToPhone and it is amazing !
Well done HTC and Google.
I'm happy with the update. I think is because my phone is working well and stable. Plus I like the feeling of original.
However, there are still some rooms for it to improve.
such as.......If I can call someone by voice dialing over the bluetooth headset....

Not Happy - camera failing.
Yes all happy now, I've actually unrooted and installed it after a deep breath. I waited to see if the general opinion was and went for it. Got fed up of flashing my phone twice a day cos of some issue or other with custom roms. All stable for me at the mo, will see how it goes.

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Am I happy? Yes and no. I'm happy that my phone has a speed increase and all the other features, but I'm not happy that out of the 39 apps I have installed only 4 of them can be moved to the SD card! Making my months of waiting for a way to get more space on my device totally wasted. Epic fail by goggle by not making the option built in to the OS and not the apps.
Rooting the device is looking more attractive to me now, pitty I cant now I've upgraded. Here's hoping they get it rooted soon.
is support for wiimote controller removed in froyo sense too?
Happy to have some new features to play around but really frustrated for not being able to voice dial via bluetooth. The most useful feature to me is not presente without reason.
I am quite happy. Have moved most apps to the SD (via the greencodeblog app) and have about 140 apps installed. Only Tunewiki and TagToDo had to be shifted back because the widgets didn't work any more.
Yes very happy!
- Faster
- apps2sd works like a charm
- nice new apps and widgets
- overall feel is faster and more smooth
- camera performance is faster
I tested apss2cd with a 10 mb app. it moved about 8mb to the sdcard.
small prob:
- some apps i bought in the market place i deleted before the update. They don't show up in the market place anymore. Not with downloads, not with searching (Raging thunder 2 for example)
To be honest it's not a very noticeable upgrade (hence only the .1 increase probably) but it does feel snapier and brings some extra functionality. What makes me happy is that HTC has treated the Desire as a flagship and has delivered Froyo to us just 1 month after the Nexus One (and before any other manufacturer). This gives me confidence that we will benefit from further upgrades in a timely matter. Well done HTC!
One happy HTC customer.
Yes very happy!

[Q] Minimalistic/bare android rom for DHD

Hi,
i am a proud new owner of a DHD, which is also my first android device. As with Windows Mobile before, i don't like the HTC Sense at all. I am also very disappointed with all the bloatware (aka trash) like Amazon MP3, Facebook, SoundHound, ... on this high class 450 Euro device. This all leads me to the following question:
Which ROM out there has as less modifications as possible or is the closest to a vanilla Android from Google?
So no
- Sense/other UI modifications
- HTC "dialer"
- (Animated) Themes
- Twitter, Facebook, Amazon
- Example Videos, pictures, MP3
A bit of e.g. battery tweaking would also be welcomed
Many thanks for your (hopefully numerous) suggestions.
Cyanogenmod 6(froyo) or 7(gingerbread)
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Flussen is correct either CM6 for Froyo or CM7 for Gingerbread. Both are great ROMs.
Personally i would recommend flashing ARHD, with no-sense and rom cleaner.
It gets rid of nearly all the Sense stuff except that which is useful, specifically the rext selection mechanic, copy and paste implementation and the app switching from the notification bar.
Those 3 functions are the sole reason im sticking with a "sense" rom.
You will end up with a pretty vanilla experience if you go with that option, save for the above 3 points.
I'd say the latest CM7 nightly and mad murdocks battery fix patch. Happy flashing
Try LeeDroid 2.2.2 with nosense-patch.

i agree, currently on Spike CM7 build 22
this is what you want
Thanks for all your support. With the help of our replies i decided to try CM7 and flashed CleanDHD v1.00 - CM7n23. Everything works flawlessly and i am much more happy as with the Stock ROM + Sense. The only thing i don't like about it is the "190dpi for the true HD look" feature, as i find the fonts unnecessarily tiny (e.g. Command buttons with 95% free space in them and only the tiny "Next" Text in the middle).
As it seems to be impossible to change the font size/DPI on the system, is there any ROM similar to CleanDHD, but with the standard fonts?
Edit:
I found out that you can set the DPI to any value in the file /system/build.prop inside the .zip of the ROM before flashing. I hereby withdraw my abovementioned newbie question.

Changes which I have noticed are:
1. Items are separated by a thicker border.
2. Promotion video is included in the screenshots column.
3. A little bit fast and a lot smoother scrolling.
4. Explore yourself....

"This all new update ropes in small visual changes wherein the setting for automatically addition of Widgets to your home screen has been bundled. The best part of this update is that this all new Android Market Place dubbed as 3.4.4 supports both the tablets as well as the Android smartphones. To a surprise, it also supports the latest Honeycomb 3.1 powered Google TV which is also known as Logitech Revue. Last but not the least when we talk of new in this version, then this version also comes with the minor stability fixeswith which this works fluently even in slower data speeds."

thanx alot for this gonna try it now it on ics and see if that helps with my download issues oh yea and on my logitech revue since that market is pretty slow and crappy
Tried it for a few days now, to me it seems quite a bit smoother and loads faster too. Doesn't lag as much as previous versions.
mine updated by itself??
i have all of that stuff without even downloading anything.
might of been ics rom gapps.
maybe i don't know??
I canĀ“t see in this version any isntalled apps.

Another dot : I have deleted all the ringtones to make space (before flash), and now I have only 504kb free on system, strange ? (stock hboot)
thanks VJ
Most of he tings are working well but I found some minor issues:
1. Random apps closed unexpectedly
2. I cannot enter to developer options, i got the message "Unfortunately, settings has stopped"
3. Strange java exception with fbreader and aldiko when open new book
4. Ugly artifacts when using camera
5. Missing FM radio application, it will be great if there is an internal app
I am using 4.0 and just find that there is 4.1.
Quick setting panel not work properly!
Bug report on your latest release:
Quick setting panel not work properly, it's missing on normal mode and just show properly in landscape mode
EDIT: Solved.
Also it will be great if you find little bit time to update the first page of the dev post with more information about ROM's features, know bugs and etc.
At the moment there is not such information except in the posts, but the you should read all of them if you want to find something you looking for ....
General question about recovery: a bit afraid to mess up the phone. I use Amon_RA recovery for the moment but read everywhere that it's better to use 4EXT. Can I simply install that recovery over the Amon_RA one? And then I can easily repartition the internal memory?
Many thanks for the guidance!

Yes just run the 4EXT recovery apk and it will overwrite the existing recovery.
Take a back up of your SD card, wipe everything, partition 1-1.5gb of ext4 as primary partition and rest fat32. Ignore other secondary partitions. Its pretty straight forward with the tool.
Good luck.

Hi !
I have a question about the cpu governor :
- What is the best actually (ondemand ?)
- IO Scheduler, deadline ?
further very fast and very stable for me, my "tweak" for speed :
- KSM active
- 16 bits transparancy
- Dithering disabled
- 0,5x for each transition/animation/windows

On CM10.1 I find the interactive governor works best, along with a minor overclock to 1113. It's super smooth at that. I also use the same 0.5x animation tweeks. I do not like the 16 bit transparancy or disabling dithering, just don't like how it looks.
I'll give KSM a shot. I haven't tried that.
Has anyone tried Chrome? It has weird rendering issues for me. Anyone else?

I have pico tts and talk back installed. They seem to work fine. Is there a specific thing you'd like me to test?

I've tried it and it's true that there is some issues with it. Less than with the V3 but still there.
I think the main problem is that chrome need a lot of memory available and use more process / CPU than the original navigator.
Just a thing I want to know. I tried the V4 and the V4.1. In the V4, it was possible to add a widget with a long press on the desktop but when I've installed the V4.1, I wasn't able to find this functionality anymore.
Well, I didn't have the time to wipe and redo the installation again so I would like to know if it's just me or if this functionnality has been removed intentionnaly ?
Another question, about the lockscreen this time.
In the version 4.1.2, it was possible to change the wallpaper of the lockscreen but with the new one, they have removed this functionnality. Does anyone know how to change it to have a wallpaper different from the desktop ? (I know it's not from the rom but android itself)
Still, even if it has less fonctionnality, I prefer the previous one ... It would have been better if it was possible to arrange the lockscreen with widget (or app ?) like the desktop ! (well, it's just my point of view)
