How many people here build Android apps? - About xda-developers.com

It looks like there isn't a ton of talk about actual app development in the "Android Software Development" section. So I was wondering how large the app developer community on here is?

[Q] App Development

I have an idea for an app that I'd like to develop, but I don't have the coding skills to do so. Is there a dev that would like to possibly team up on this?
You could give the App Inventor for Android a shot.

For realz? Don't be a douche.
Im sure someone would be willing to listen to your idea. On a side note, this really should have been posted in the Q&A section, or the Themes and Apps section, and not the accessories section.
+1 yea I think someone in there would be happy to help you with that.

Mods-AOSP/Sense sub-forums possible?

Mods,
I think that the greater part of the XDA community would agree that with the release of Gingerbread and the recent 3.70 OTA we are going to be seeing a lot of clutter in the forums specifically the development forums. I myself have found that it is getting harder and harder each day to sort through all of the new stuff that the developers are putting out there for us. Would it be possible to have sub-forums in the development forum dedicated to AOSP Roms/kernels, another sub-forum for Sense Roms/kernels, and another sub-forum for modifications and hacks?
I feel like this would give the community a better opportunity at seeing everything that these developers put all their hard work into and would eliminate the clutter in the forum. Just a suggestion.
I agree with what you posted, but do not agree where you posted it. I never mention "wrong section" as some of the members tend to say it more than anything else, but i believe there is a suggestion sub-forum to this site.

Hopefully this catches one of the mods eyes and we can get something in motion here. It's just been overwhelming lately scrolling through the development forum and trying to stay up to date on everything thats new. I know that it isn't very likely to happen, but to further organize things not only would a section dedicated to AOSP and sense Roms be beneficial, but also a sub-forum for there respective kernels.
Or maybe even a sticky with an alphabetical list with links to the rom threads?
Would be nice

[DISCUSSION] iOS on XDA

Seeing as this is a discussion about XDA and not about general phones, I thought this is the most appropriate place to put this thread. I have also checked for similar threads but have found nothing.
If a mod thinks otherwise I am sorry for posting in the wrong place.
I have created this thread as you can probably tell, to ask why there is no iOS in the listed platforms on XDA.
With iOS on XDA the site itself will recieve: - A much much larger audience
- More users
So why not include it.
This is not a request even though it may seem like it. There is obviously a reason as to why there is no iOS and I simply want to root it out. Even if it only takes one or two posts and the thread has to be moved around by mods for posting in the incorrect place.
Please contribute to the thread. I have also created a poll. If you do not have time to leave a comment, use the poll.
Anything relating to iOS can be found on XDA's sister site, forum.iphone-developers.com. The reason they don't put that section on this site is because it would inevitably cause too many flame wars between iOS fanboys and Android fanboys.

Why people cannot just accept ios as simplicicty and android as power I just do not know.
I wouldn't know because I've never owned an apple product. I've only ever used them whilst trying to sort problems out for my family & friends who own them.
I just simply couldn't own one because I mainly customize my phone through widgets, launchers etc. There isn't the ability to do that from iOS.

I think they do, just not in the tone that you mean. Discussions of this sort invariably take on a nasty tone due to the scorched earth policy decided upon by one of the involved companies.
On a different note, would you please consider reducing the font size you are using? Honestly, it comes across in exactly the same manner as all caps does by "yelling". I do not believe you mean it that way, but it does come across that way in effect. Thank you.

Thanks for letting me know about the font. I just thought it was clearer for people to read. Now I see why people write in this font so much.
Well at least someone said it.
i have used iphone 3g and 4s but for me iphone is a crap but there are lots of stuffs/mods that you can do with an android phone but you cant do it in an iphone
That is true. I've always loved android for that. But because so many hipsters get iphone. The support is through the roof. Jailbreak will permit anything.
I will literally troll the sister forums to the point it blows up.

I agree with this, also i belive that iOS has such a large following it needs it's own dedicated forum, as give it a section under platforms would not be enough.

Of course iOS should be here in XDA. Only Android discussions looks XDA a biased feeling. iOS and Android, both are great and should be here, someone agrees or not, doesn't really matter.

I ran across this in the Nexus 4 Dev forum..

Definitely needed in this forum, seems like a lot of cherry-pickers looking for acknowledgment for cutting and pasting other peoples stuff.
Most roms out there are just cm or aokp with a few tweaks and cosmetic changes or a straight port .....always been that way and always will. Gonna be a real quiet dev section if "copies" weren't allowed. Most are just learning by doing this and sharing....I see no harm in it personally.
If we had more development than we do.....an original dev section and regular dev section may work....like nexus 7 forum for example....but with t989 I think moving roms to general or another dev section isn't necessary.
Just my opinion.

I read it just fine. And my personal opinion (yes...imho) is that it just mucks up the general section. Let people flash the copy roms if they want...their choice. And like I said....about half the t989 roms would end up there.
I just don't think our dev section is busy enough to be worried about this. Some phone sections definitely need these rules, nexus devices for example....but the t989 dev section is not so packed that I think those roms are muddying the waters much.
Where do you suggest the line be drawn as to what is suitable for dev section? We have cm, slim, aokp, skyrocket ports and other roms being altered slightly and in our dev section.....they aren't hurting anyone...and the guys are learning a lot and sometimes making improvements.....but, are they original works? ? So they will all go to general section?
I guess then, to agree in part, I think an original dev section, and a regular dev section may be a better idea. Again....like the nexus 7 for example.
The noobs get slammed by enough unamed veterans already for not searching hard enough.....putting a bunch of roms in general will just make it messy and worse.
Check out the i9100 general section. A mess if you ask me.
K....sorry for the novel!

Also....with t989 devs getting new devices and moving on....why not encourage and support the guys just starting out. Let them go at their pace.....they may be the veterans soon as our current top devs move on.
As I said, its the users choice to flash the roms they flash.....what's the difference what section they're in? To me....all roms should be in dev section. Much less confusion.

Eh, that's not completely true about Nexus forums; there are a lot of Nexus only/original ROMs out. Most newer devices have two dev forums; one for original development (custom kernels, 'original' ROMs, etc.), and the other just 'normal' android development (kangs like stated above).
If you want to see the 'original' ROMs, check out the original dev section.

I know what you're saying...and I think its a far better idea than putting any roms in general. Just too messy!
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
Yeah. I see where your coming from. It would be messy and that may get annoying as well.
But to be honest there is to much leniency in this forum. Dropping straight compiled builds from source "to learn" is not helping the community and is not helping that person learn...
I can build from source and compile that doesn't mean that I know how to build a ROM or that it's a good idea to post them and clutter up the dev section.
I can unzip an already built rom and move some application files around and add some stuff to the build.prop. Does that mean I built a ROM? No. It means that I know how to use WinZip. And definitely should never be in any dev section.
Now I also know some c# , some basic, a little bit C++. Now if I or somebody else use that knowledge to take a pre existing ROM and actually assist in the development or fix problems or issues then that is development and that would belong in the development section.
This is obviously all my opinion. Some of you may agree , some of you may not, some of you might even be one of these people I'm talking about. And this is neither here nor there I simply think everyday dev section should have a sticky like this.

OS Porting

This forum is not about porting OS's to devices, it is about porting apps, that you developed, to other OSs.
For example, you made an app thats a tetris game for android and you want to make it work on Windows Phone, this section is about that.
Hope you get your answers about OS porting elsewhere :good:
Please don't post here because this isn't the place for miui, Cyanogenmod, etc. Posts.

then it would make sense to have the thread properly titled as App Porting not OS.
Talk to an administrator then if you wish to change the name of this forum.
OS porting is located correctly under the app development forum, maybe for the English challenged people is confusing but if you enter app development you must know it's not about operative systems at all, unlike the rest of xda forums, which are exactly for OS porting and mods.
