AOSP vs Sence - Available Memory - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, This is my 1st real post so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section or if it has been asked before.
Pretty much I have had my Evo rooted now for about a year and flash a new rom when ever I get bored. I just discovered MIUI Rom and really like it, but there are a few things from Sence I miss and I just like to go back and forth when I get bored. Okay sorry i'm just rambling now.
The question. Why am I having 230+ mb of free memory on miui but when I flashed back over to Synergy I hardly have 100 mb of free memory and it feels like it lags a little. Maybe I'm just spoiled by miui but it seems like I should be able to have more memory than that. Is there anyway to get more memory or just make the sence rom feel like its smoother.
Again, sorry for rambling and being a noob, but im learning.
Thanks in advance for any help I get.

It's because sense takes up a lot of memory. I'm on miui myself. I like syngery but not a sense fan esp with all the sense bloat.

I just put MIKG 2.41 on my wifes and it had 347mb free after install, and 250 ish after reinstalling her apps. And so far it is ultra smooth. I was debating on the two, Synergy and Mikg, and went with the later because I played with a Synergy phone and it was laggy also. This was also our first rom,

Just to be clear, we're talking about memory, right? Not storage?
If we're talking about memory, I've noticed this too with the Sense 2.1/3.0 ROMs such as Synergy and MikG. I've been on CM7 for a long time and wanted to try these out. They're both nice -- some things are really, really nice, but I also miss a few things from CM. The memory may be the dealbreaker for me though. If I load up Slacker and start playing it, then leave it playing while I open up GMail, the CNN app, or whatever, it often gets low on memory and kills off Slacker (despite that the ongoing notification from Slacker should tell it to kill it only as a last resort). I never had those problems on CM7, or on the old Sense 1.0 ROMs.

Ah, well I was talking about free storage on the phone. What do you use to check the actual free memory?

There should be an easier way to check actual memory on these phones. :-D good question. but yeah storage.... I have SOO MANY lag issues with sense! Whenever that memory gets to about 104 or less. LAG! major lag.

Actually, one thing I've noticed is that there are two places in both Synergy and MikG that show it, and they don't agree. One is the Quick Settings on the notification bar. Right now it says 74.35MB free. The other is Settings -> Applications -> Manage -> Running. There it says 157MB free. I'm not sure which is right. Even 74MB free doesn't sound too bad, but my experience is that it's killing apps much more aggressively than I'd expect.

Ok, in quick settings it shows about 110 available.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Yeah I'm talking about the available Ram (Memory). Storage isn't a problem since we have our sd cards. But yeah 104 seems to be about all I get with Sence. I went to Mikg from Miui and it seems to running alot better then Synergy did. Even though both showed the same amount of free ram. Synergy we just really laggy as someone else said earlier. Does anyone know of any apps that can help cut the memory being used? Miui and Mikg both have built in ways of showing your avaliable memery and Miui was always 200-250 after I killed aLL apps but only about 110 tops on Mikg. Also does it have anything to do with the size of the rom? Like Miui is a 75 mb zip while mikg is like 250 mb.

Sense dude. Sense. S-e-n-s-e. Sorry, just couldn't let it go anymore.
I think that the Sense 2.1+3.0 ROMs may just be pushing the limits of what can be done with our phones. If you look a the phones that come with Sense 3.0, they've got 1GB of RAM. Now Sense 2.1 has been given to other phones with 512MB, such as the Evo Shift, but I don't know how much extra RAM is taken by the 3.0 bits in MikG and Synergy.
I think the devs have done a great job, and honestly, both ROMs run very well as far as foreground activities go, in my experience. But I definitely think we're losing some ability to multitask effectively with these ROMs.

How fast is too fast ?

Ok so I use mainly 2.1 sense build running at 633mhz cpu speed, and have had no probs with SOD, or overheating whatsoever. I have read of people going 787mhz, and leads me to wonder, how much can the processor in our TP2's take? The reason I ask is because by overclocking in Android, I have experienced significant performance increase and little to no ill effect, and it looks like at some poin oc will be possible with Windows. I am hoping that oc will be key to making Windows run as smooth as it ought to, escpecially with the severely limited amount of ram these phones have. If oc makes the sense build run smooth enough to be used comfortably, I feel same is possible with Windows, but how fast is too fast ?
u mean me..lol. good question though. ;-) I've had no ill wffects or drawbacks

I believe demandarin got it up to ~760MHz with no ill effects, the only issue being if your phone goes to sleep, it'll freeze and you'll have to boot back into WinMo and run haret again. And as far as my testing goes, there isn't a significant hit to battery life.
Also, I'd recommend using the AOSP build (the one without Sense). I tried running the Sense build and it's much, much slower. I also hear you get less available RAM for Android use (and ATK reported this, too). Plus, with the overclock applied, the AOSP 2.1 build just *screams*.
With the battery fix in startup.txt (htc_battery_smem.fake=1 /if thats not it exactly its very close, you know which one I mean), I never get sleep of death. I know aosp is faster than the sense build, but sense runs pretty good for me at 633, and its so nice looking. I also have the sense build on my sd with sense disabled, I was going for basically a aosp build only with the sense build's 7 pages but it seems when you disable sense, you lose the 2 extra pages with it. I have had some freezes with sense due to apparently running it out of available ram, but anytime it does that, it just goes back to the klinux/htc bootscreen and starts right back up.

If you want AOSP with more screens you should just use AOSP and get a different launcher. Sense is HORRIBLY slow, and even when you have it disabled that build is SUPER slow. I've got 110mb free RAM with AOSP running Launcher Pro without a buggy overclock (that really when you run benchmarks on the OC it doesnt help THAT much), and it blows that Sense build out of the water.
just to serve as a comparison: my tilt 2 running NRGZ28's latest titanium ROM I've only got 70 mb of free ram. Are you sure you have 110? that means your phone is only using about 40% of ram just sitting there. With WM6.5 and sense 2.5 I would hover around 65% after a fresh reboot and with titanium i am at about 60%....

I have the prolauncher one on my sd too, just havent set it up yet. Thats my next one to do. I have 2.01, 2.1 aosp, sense, and 2.1sense with no sense.
I have a 16 gb card so I figured why not. I really like the way sense looks, but I didnt know it was that heavy. Thats cool kinda gives me motivation to mess with it, I was stallin on it cause I hate goin thru fixing the time again.
Hey is there some way to build into the droid utility app the option to choose which build you wanna run, I assume it could be done by naming the anboot folders to andboot1 ,andboot2, etc. and then pointing the droid utility to whichever one is chosen right ?

Yup, we have actually discussed an online XML database, which would allow the app lots more options. Me and Piet have a huge list of things we want to add already, we just need to actually get the motivation and time to do it.

+f course the Aosp build runs great right out da box. But with the overclock, it screams. Did various tests to see how much of a difference in improvement. I don't just go by benchmarks. I look for real time application. ;-) live wallpapers stock move ok. With the overclock, they fly all over and off da screen. The UI is wayy faster and more responsive. Programs load up faster. Tested different games b4 and after. After the overclock, games ran at almost normal speeds, Since hardware 3d not completly wrkn. Ill eventually go bck to stock speeds further along in development of this build. I got an early start Reefer, 4:20, U Ready? ;-)

Yeah by like 90 degrees. I spent a little while last nite looking for a way to calibrate mine, but I got tired and gave up.
Anyone manage to overclock WITHOUT using htc_battery_smem.fake=1 and not have the SOD issue? even if it's not that much of an overclock?

How to stop EVO from killing programs?

I know I've read somewhere that when a program uses too much memory that it is automatically killed, but at times I may have something downloading(for example, a Mod downloading in dolphin browser) if I navigate away from dolphin browser and come right back, the file that I was downloading would fail..is there a way to prevent this besides staying in dolphin browser until the download is complete?

What ROM are you using? The Sense 2.1/3.0 hybrids and full 3.0 ROMs may not leave much RAM left, especially if you've got a few things installed that run in the background as services. You can try to reduce what's running in the background, but the ROM itself doesn't leave a whole lot to play with. It may work well for what you're doing in the foreground, but you need more RAM headroom than Sense 2.1 or 3.0 leaves us on our phone if you're going to multitask much.

I am running Fresh 4.2.0.0 and have 120 MB free system and have the same problem. Researching it, I am led to understand that Gingerbread is more aggressive at killing background apps than Froyo was. Unfortunately, I haven't found or even heard of a fix for it yet. Very annoying when Sense has to reload when exiting other apps because it was shut down in the background.

Not with that rom. That's the one downfall of that rom, it takes almost all of your memory.

Slow evo... exchange/fb/pop users

Ok I'm using exchange, fb, pop3, gmail, and the htc thing all at once on my phone. and I have exchange set to push.
Is this the reason my phone is slow as ****? I figured an evo would be able to handle this.
I'm using synergy kingdom newest and the newest radios from cal.
I have next to nothing else running and the menus are always jerky and laggy. I've tried the other synergy godmode rom and same results
Task manager shows 311MB of 404MB being used with 93MB free.
I have a 16GB class 10 msd card in the phone that has been partitioned 128MB, 2046MB and upgraded to ext3.
How about internal memory ? It might running low, and I believe you have little bit of "too many" accounts.
Try wipe cache and dalvik as well

Everything has been whiped multiple times.
How do I find internal memory?
I went to sd & phone storage and I have 176MB free
What are all the ways I can maximize this? I used the dconfig and told it to use as much of the sd card as I knew how to make it do.
eff it. I got away from that sense 3.0 crap. Why do people keep making roms for phones that cant use them? 3.0 was ment for a phone with 1gb memory and we have 512. I went to MIUI and so far it has been blazing fast. Although it looks odd.

Lol such a n00b thing to say. User error! You had to many accounts. I have synergy kingdom and it runs blazing fast.
Honestly I've never experienced speed in any rom except CM7. I was on nightly 29 for 5 months (laugh now) but I didn't see speed until I upgraded to the newest nightly. Blazing fast, Synergy had potential but just too much bloat on sense even though I miss through I miss the syncing.

[Q] My Desire Z Free Ram problem. Is there any way to fix?

Guys i am really new on xda, so if my topic is on wrong place sorry about that really. I am using a Desire Z with stock rom, 2.3.3 official, but my maximum free ram never reach 80-85mb, i can't understand what is wrong, i only installed few apps like facebook twitter youtube, and it's always same, even when i am hard resetted, still same free ram amount. Isn't this so low? My phone is working pretty slow lot of games are laggy, even web browser takes 3-4 seconds to open, i can't understand what is wrong, i also always used cleaning apps but nothing changed unfortunately. Is there any way to fix this? Usually when i am checked weird thing using ram... Like: Google Services 9,9MB CSPeopleSyncService 5,9MB Google Maps 5,8MB Touch Input 22MB Calendar 9,5MB HTC Sense 7,0MB Setting 20MB things like this... I don't want to root my phone also...
Unfortunately without rooting you don't have many other options. You can 'try' a task killer application, but its not necessary with Android.
You can root the device and leave the stock ROM on there. That would give you many options like installing a custom script and over clocking your phone (with a custom kernal) to get past some of the 'lag' you speak of.
the sense is a huge ram consumer
with virtuous unity 1.31 , i have only 75mb free ram
but sense 3.0 is cool
Unfortunately there's not much you can do OP. If you're running a Sense ROM, you should be used to only 85mb of RAM free. That's not unexpected at all.

[Q] Are the relatively newer ROMS too heavy for Desire Z ?

Hi guys,
I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z .. Ever since I rooted the phone about 1.5 years ago, and have been trying out the newer ROMs, I've slowly realized that my phone is getting slower, slower, and slower .. I'm currently using a Jellybean ROM, and its *extremely* slow ! I mean, at times I receive a call, and the ringer rings about 5-6 times, and during all this time, the phone doesn't have the juice to switch to the phone app, so that I can 'accept' the call ! Ultimately the call disconnects itself!
A friend recently suggested to me that maybe the newer ROMs are two powerful for my phone, and that I need to move to an older Android version ROM, which my Desire Z CAN handle, without this much lag !
Also, I hardly have any apps installed on my phone at all, in an attempt to keep the load low .. I also use 'Advance Task Killer' regularly to kill background apps, but it doesn't really improve anything ..
What can I do to improve the speed of my phone !? I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !
Get rid of the task killer first of all...

I dont think it will make any difference .. I've tried many different ROMs, and its always the same condition with all ... Sometimes my phone become *so* unresponsive that I just feel like smashing it on the ground ! (When I really get upset!)
Also, on another note, when I open Advanced Task Killer, it shows me the amount of free RAM on the top .. Most of the times this value is between 60 MB ~ 100 MB, and sometimes between 100 MB ~ 140 MB .. If never seen this value go above 135 MB or so ... And Desire Z is supposed to have 512 MB of RAM
just full wipe and reflash the rom

If I do that, it will initially be fast .. Even if I install all my apps on the first day, it will still be okay in terms of speed ... But give it a week, it eventually becomes slow .. very slow! .. And the odd thing is, during this week, I don't necessary install/uninstall anything .. the phone just ****s itself in somehow ... And then from then on, it remains slow, no matter what ...
I open Google Maps, takes like 15 seconds to open .. takes another 60 seconds to go to Google Navigation, and then further lags after that ..
Basically there's a lag in *everything* !
Is there a way I can see what is slowing down the phone ?!
Also, is it true or not whether an older phone, such as Desire Z, can or cannot handle a relatively newer Android version ROM ? Maybe this is why the latest Android versions are NOT officially available for phones many times, because the manufacturer knows the device cannot handle that newer Android version ?
If your rom supports ext partitions, make sure all of yours are formatted that way. Chances are you have sopme bad apps, a logcat may hedlp determin abused wake locks or memory leaks. Also you can try downloading battery batt stats or watchdog for more infor

i had a play with elitemod ics the other day & it was defiantly slower than the GB version... it was using more or less double the ram which i suspect is the real problem.....
Yes its true the newer versions are more hungry. We touched on it in one of the andromadus threads recently. I believe the issue to be the cpu. The nexus s has the same amount of ram as us and although its not as good on there as the gnex, its still good. Having bumped my lower cpu limit a notch, its much better. I also tried a few upper limits and found that 1200 to be best as it suffers with animation under that.
But then all dz's are different. Stay on your rom and bump up the lower limits a few clicks and let us know what you think.

I've noticed the slowdowns happening with negligible CPU load and no memory constraints. I suspect a problem with the kernel. At the times it happens, the phone seems to be just doing *nothing*.

Is there any other thing I can try apart from logcat ? I installed Watchdog a few hours ago, but so far it hasn't reported anything out of the way ..
What does have ext partitions do ? How does that speed up the OS ?
Also, I'm probably going to be re-flashing another ROM soon, so please suggest me a ROM ... I'm looking for maximum longterm stability and responsiveness here, so even if a ROM isn't the newest or the most feature-filled, I can still try it out ..
And what is Superwipe (read it in another thread) ?
Normally, when I restore stuff after installing a ROM, I download a fresh copy of the app from the Store, and only restore the app's data using titanium .. is this okay ?
For the sake of starting fresh, flash the ext 4 recovery and flash mimicry as your rom. Read all suggestions in the first few post on mimicry, to flash 4ext I made a thread, you'll find it the first page or so in the general section (dzhboot or something)
Mimicry is one of the best made best performing full featured ics roms for our phones, partitioning everything to 4ext (easily done through recovery) will make it far better. Other bonus tweaks will be added in.
There (in my opinion) are beter performing gingerbread roms, but I do sugest mimicry as it is amazing and the dev has laid out a wealth of knowledge in the first few posts

I'm assuming you're referring to this thread: http://www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187
Well this is the ROM I'm currently using, which I flashed about 2 months ago, which is giving me all these performance issues ..
I went through the first few pages, but I didn't find any instructions on 4EXT ... The only thing I found was in the OP's FAQ in the start, which said that you should apply ext by downloading 4ext from Play Store, if you get lags ..
Anywhere else I can look ?
Look in general section, somewhere in the first page I posted a thread called dzhboot on g2 or something to that extent, one of the first few posts I eplain how to flash 4ext recovery.
One of the fastest roms I have used is elitemod cm7, maybe try that
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I have been wondering the same as the OP. I have been using andromadus and andromadus mimicry roms for the past few month. I tired cm9 unofficial but it was no different to mimicry in terms of lag. Currently on flinny's jb beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005136. Lag is not terrible but too often I am looking at a white screen waiting for something to happen.
I often experience lags opening apps like phone and browser (any browser). Phone hanging when trying to make a call is particularly annoying because my wife asks "why is your phone so ****?"
I would love to have a really smooth experience like others report but even with a fresh wipe I seem to have trouble. When I try to reduce the process limit i still seem to have too many processes running. What should i look for in logcat in terms of tracking down the problem?
Maybe 4ext will sort it out? I am very loathe to go back to a cm7 rom.
Ext4 worked really well for me to speed up my phone.. I highly recommend it.

It's gotta be a certain app your installing thats hogging all your memory, I been running mimicry ever since blk released it n have had very few slowdowns.
Never had a problem receiving/making calls 'wiping' is not the same as 'superwiping' its different then just the name, I suggest you do some reading up before flashing any more roms.

i superwipe, and i've been flashing roms since the g1. I am not seeing any particular process hogging resources. this current jb beta is pretty good but still get some lagging at random.
if that were the case I would love to try and find out what it is.
it seems to me that a minority of users report lags in rom threads and are dismissed without ever really getting to the root of the problem.
I would really like to try and get to the bottom of it. I am going to move to ext4 but if there are other troubleshooting steps to take I am all ears.
Ext4 alone will make a huge difference, and most of the rest of the slow downs will be do to apps/running services which can be seen with a logcat what is continually trying to use cpu resources
If only a minority report slowdowns then either that minority has a different idea of how the phone should run/ they use the phone in a completley different way/ or have different settings and apps then most have.
