[Q] Why does flashing over ROMs work or leave problems? - About xda-developers.com

Ever since I started flashing ROMs, I never did a full wipe before (because of my laziness to get all my data back). Most of the time, the end results were fine and if it didn't work, i'd just restore and try another ROM. Sometimes though, the ROM would be just fine except the wifi doesn't scan or 4g doesn't work anymore or HTC widgets FC all the time. Why is it that this happens and will there ever be a fix without a full wipe?
* This is just a question I have. I do full wipe now before every ROM. *

Try to think of your disk space as a linear thing with five blocks occupying the same space each.
|a|b|c|d|e|
Now, say you flash ROM X on your device and it takes up enough space to cover blocks a, b, c, and d.
|X|X|X|X|e|
Let's say you don't like how ROM X operates, and prefer the look of ROM Y from the screen shots you see. ROM Y uses less space and different apps, so it only takes up blocks a, b, and c.
|Y|Y|Y|X|e
Now your system has to interpret which of these leftover files from ROM X actually belong in there, and which are just pieces of information left over. Since there isn't a way for he ROM to do this, it will see and try to understand what these leftover pieces do and incorporate them into the file system as best it can. This may mean that these files are parts of other applications that are already installed on the new ROM, so they are only partially overwritten.
This is the best I can explain this, and is the reason that most people recommend that you do a full wipe, or task29 for some people, before flashing a new ROM. This is less important for ROMs that are exactly the same as the one before and are only and update to the previous version. When switching between completely different ROMs, it is always important to do this to avoid "ghosting" or "phantom" issues that other users are not reporting.

Will there be roms that don't need a full wipe? Yes. Will a full wipe ever be not needed? No. This is the price you pay for flashing roms. If you don't like setting things up all over again then find a rom you like and stick with it.

HTC Desire - New to android modding - help needed

Hey everyone,
I'm really new to android modding, and don't know much about all this. I'm good at modding but never been on android before. I went through the stickies and full desire guide etc threads, but its really getting confusing for me.
I've come to know some things: (correct if wrong)
1) You have some custom ROMs which you can flash after rooting the phone.
2) Most ROMs have pretty much everything working, but some things don't work on some ROMs (like camera for some)
3) Rooting voids warranty.
Seeing the vast amount of ROMs in the development section, I'm confused which one to look for. Can anyone suggest me which would be the best (stable and everything working) ROM for me? I basically need APP2SD or APP2SD+ (NOT the froyo one because its useless, I'm talking about the custom one) and minor tweaks like changing the homescreen etc.
Which would be the best suited ROM for above description? Basically, what criteria decide which ROM to put on the phone?
@Moderators, sorry if its the same old story. I'm really confused and so HAD to make a thread.
Hi and welcome. A couple of points I can help you with:
There are loads of roms to choose from, I am using this rom atm:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Everything on this particular rom works fine and is very fast and stable. I generally find if roms have several revisions then are are generally very good. i.e. are having continuous support and developement.
As for rooting voiding warranty? Well this is no longer an issue as rooting can easily be reversed )
Hope this helps

You do indeed need to Root the device before flashing, the only ROM that don't have 'things working' is the Desire HD ROM. I am not sure if that has been fixed or not yet though. All the other AOSP and Sense based Desire ROMs have everything working just fine. Rooting will void your warranty but it's super easy to reverse so there is nothing to worry about.
The most popular ROMs by far seem to be the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROMs (Non-Sense ROMs), all of them will have APP2SD built into them, the Sense ROMs also have APP2SD built into them.
LeeDrOiD is by far the most popular Sense based ROM, RCMixHD is the Desire HD based ROM, which I think still doesn't have the camera working.
And by far the most popular Desire ROM overall is the ASOP Cyanogen based DeFrost.
To get the most out of APP2SD you will need to download ROM Manager and create an EXT3 partition on your SD card so the ROM will place all of the Froyo compatable apps into the partion and not your internal memory.
Being brand new to the desire, I've flashed every Rom available in the last 2 weeks.
Leedroid is a very good sense Rom. I prefer having a Rom with sense right now because this is my first HTC.
Right now I'm running the Aurax sense Rom, solely because it has its own setCPU built in.
The hd roms didn't impress me that much, not yet at least, with a little more time they will be awesome though.
The MIUI roms are also amazingly pretty, if you don't mind the iPhone feel. My only problem with it though, and I've been told this hardly happens, my battery life was pathetic.
At the end of the day though, apart from the hardware, it is android and all the available apps that make our phone so great.
All the custom roms do add a lot of speed to the phone though, you have to do a quadrant after you flash so that you can see how awesome the Rom makes your phone run. They also add additional functionality compared to the stock Rom.
Honestly, I can't see why anyone would keep any Android device stock when there are such amazing roms around. At the end of the day its all down to your own preferences and what functions you like. You'll love any Rom you flash.

Thanks for such amazing replies. Meanwhile, I've also been through many ROMs and their descriptions. The terminologies are kinda new for me, but I can understand many things now....
The only thing I care about right now is App2SD because I found FroYo's move to SD doesn't help much. Also second thing is that I'm not having MY desire yet, its my friend's device m gonna try out everything on! So I'd be taking some extra care!
One big relief is that rooting is reversible. That'd be cool.
What are the odds of bricking your phone while flashing or applying mods?

It is honestly impossible to brick a desire. I bricked my MOTO backflip, there was no coming back from that. With the desire I flashed something that didn't work, but pressing volume down and power gets you right into the hbooot menu, from there just mount as usb and copy over a new Rom to flash.
The one thing you need to remember, when flashing new roms the first boot takes a while, never pull the battery thinking there's nothing happening, that will destroy your phone and there's no coming back from that.
Before every Rom you flash make sure to do a factory reset in the recovery menu, that ensures that the new Rom will work to its full capability and minimizes the chances of experiencing problems.

You can brick your device flashing Radios, but you can always send it back to HTC, pay them an extortionate amount and they will revive it for you. But overall, the chances are slim to none in my experience.
Just make sure, after rooting, you make a Nandroid backup of the OS. Then you can do whatever you like to the phone and it will be reversable.
I keep a Nandroid of my DeFrost ROM, and one of my PaysROM, and I have one of my MoDaCo R8, you can switch between them just using Recovery, as the mood takes you, absolutely everything will be exactly as it was everytime you load the backup back onto the phone, I just wipe the cache, Dalvik Cache, factory reset the ROM then reinstall whichever ROM I want to use (DeFrost, PaysROM etc etc) from the SD card and then backup from the Nandroid.
Depending on the age of your desire, you shouldn't need to flash a radio though. I've never needed to flash a radio, but that's because my desire came with the latest radio, thankfully it still has the amoled screen.
If you do need to replace the radio and somehow brick it, if its still under warranty HTC will replace it for you because there is no way that they can prove you bricked the device.

Wow that means you install a ROM, make settings you want, put in your data (phonebook etc) and then take a full backup. Switching between them is as easy as restoring a backup!
Is that right?
Initially, I'd be trying out ROMs, and would stick to the one which suits me best. I just can't wait before my desire arrives this monthend!!

It saves everything, app data, messages, settings, the lot. Although when switching ROMs I still factory reset, wipe the caches and reinstall the ROM I want to use before loading the backup of that specific ROM. I am not sure things will go so smoothly if you just reload the backups without factory resetting and reinstalling the ROM first, but it won't hurt to try.

[HOW TO] How to Flash a New ROM & Install all APPS in 10 Minutes …

How would you feel if you could make a Nandroid backup, wipe your device clean, flash a new ROM, restore all your personal apps (with settings, SMS messages, and call log intact), all in about 10 minutes?
Too good to be true? After all, you probably remember what they say about things that sound too good to be true. Normally you shouldn’t believe it. In this case, though, it’s real, and it works! Many people in the DIET ICS ROM thread have already tried it, with amazing success.
As always, there’s a caveat. You perform the following procedures at your own risk. I will not be held responsible for any damage, frustration, anger, sadness, or suicides that may result from your decision to implement this process.
CAUTION: This method of data recovery will work under a wide variety of situations; however, you must consider the following:
1) When going from a stock or stock-based ROM to another stock or stock-based ROM, this method should work very well. It doesn’t matter if it’s the same ROM as long as both are based on a stock ROM.
2) When going from a stock or stock-based ROM to an AOSP-based ROM, such as CM or AOKP, this method may/will not work. Similarly, when going from an AOSP-based ROM to a stock or stock-based ROM, this method may/will not work.
Use common sense, and always follow instructions provided by the ROM Developer.
This method also removes any concern as to whether or not you need to wipe because the process involves doing a full wipe, which only adds about 30 seconds to the procedure.
Here we go …
1. Boot into Recovery
2. Make a Nandroid backup
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache partition
5. Wipe Dalvik Cache
6. Flash ROM
7. DO NOT REBOOT – STAY IN RECOVERY
8. Select backup and restore
9. Select advanced restore
10. Select the Nandroid backup you made above
11. Select Restore data
12. Select Yes – Restore data
13. WAIT!
14. REBOOT
If all goes according to plan, you will arrive at your home screen with all apps in place, and with all settings intact, including stored text messages, and your call log.
Shockingly easy, isn’t it? After all, it is ALWAYS suggested that you do a Nandroid before you flash any new ROM, so this procedure will ALWAYS have you completely up-to-date.
Okay, you can hit the thanks button now.

This method works “perfectly” if you’re upgrading an existing ROM. However, I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work equally well even if you’re coming from another ROM. Either way, use common sense, and always follow instructions provided by the ROM Developer.

Good to see you here from the one x. I'm glad to be back on Sammy. One x just had too many bugs for me and no memory card was a deal breaker.
This tutorial seems legit, I'm just concerned that doing this could overwrite mods the rom developer implements and cause issues. Any response to that concern?

Usually use Titanium Backup myself, so I can selectively select which apps to restore with data. If you're going from a stock based ROM( stock modified ) to AOSP ( CM, AOKP, or any of their kangs ) then I don't think I'd recommend this shotgun method of restoring. However Stock -> Stock this is very fast and shouldn't cause any issues.
About mods, not sure, most mods are going to be in /system so those should be fine, however anything themed will be overwritten I believe. ( CWM wipes and restores, not an additive restore correct? )
I completely agree ...

I completely agree. If you're sticking with a stock-based ROM, or up-dating almost ANY existing ROM, then this method should work just fine; however, like you said, I would not recommend it if going from stock to AOSP, or vice versa.
I would also agree concerning the mods, which are almost always in /system, and aren't the theme files anywhere BUT in the data folder? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Good tip, Peter. I never knew about that one and it will come in handy for me!
Am I the only one who also formats /system in Recovery?
thank you for this! im jumping from stock to diet ics and this tip helped a lot.
im also coming from about a months use of HTC One X. its only been one day with this sg3 and i already prefer it over the htc one x.
Is ROM Manager still advisable or did Koush move on and it is an abandoned project like some of the reviews suggest in the Google Play store? I used to use this to flash and manage my NANDROID's and it was super easy.

When I had my old Droid X2 (MB870), this is the method I used all the time, and it was very simple and straightforward, if I am understanding you correctly, this method is conditional in that you have to be coming from an existing flashed ROM? So for instance I just rooted yesterday through Odin but am still on stock, this method wouldn't work for me? It would be awesome if this could be utilized universally for what ever (rooted state), is this in fact the case or what exactly is the specific condition if any?
I will be adding a cautionary note to the first post ...

This method I can confirm works perfectly with the ApOcAlYpSe 7_10_12 ROM by smartguy044. I hope this helps those who are afraid to flash new ROMs because the entire process (from Nandroid to installing all apps and re-establishing settings), can take hours. I never really trusted Titanium, even though many do, so before hearing about this method, it would take me anywhere from 2-6 hours to get my device back to exactly how I want it, with all settings re-established. Flashing and installing apps wasn't the issue, which took me less than an hour. It's opening every single app and adjusting the settings that often took hours.
Peter
You really don't have to worry about restoring data if you flash a ROM that doesn't format the data partition. I have found that some/most don't wipe data. So you can just flash the ROM and reboot and go on your way. Of course do make a backup just in case.
I use TiBu 100% of the time. Never had it not work.

You are correct in your suggestion "If" the Rom installed does not wipe or format the data. This is obviously a alternate, fast method for restoration of user data if needed in a pinch or just as a normal way of getting your configuration and apps back to the way you had them configured previously (either stock or on another similar installed ROM).
I am not sure what you meant by you use TiBu and not have it work? When restoring from TiBu you should always just restore missings Apps with Data and avoid anything System related as it would most likely overwrite anything that a ROM customization may have just installed and will cause issues whether minor or even serious. I would suggest only messing with system restore items if you absolutely know what you are doing. That aside I agree with Peter as TiBu as good as a backup as it is, its time consuming...but its another precautionary backup method needed as a just in case.

Well, you can't if you are coming from a type of rom and you want to install another type of rom, but if you are just updating the rom you can just flash the update on top of it... But at a certain point you will need to do a full wipe cause the phone will get unstable
Not to mention, you can easily back up you're data using titanium back up. Although, some report errors when switching roms. I, myself haven't encountered these errors.. just letting you know, switching roms isn't the end of the world when you can easily back your stuff up and clear all the caches and everything

your phone never got to use all 700 whatever. With every phone, due to hardware/phone restrictions you'll never get all of it. E.G. the Note 2, packing 2 whopping gigabytes of ram only gets to use around 1.7 of that. HTC Is a little worse off, its DNA gets only 1.5 usable of the 2 gigabytes.
If you go back to stock, and install a separate task manager you'll see that you probably only get 610-620 (I think htc just shows how much is free, not how much is system accessible). 610-620 because it varies ROM by ROM, however the difference is very minimal, and it shouldn't make a difference. If you're really worried about speed, try out the Supercharger script (google for it). It might look a little intimidating, but youtube will help, the script itself asks you everything in a logical manner, and more importantly, you probably won't be able to screw up- the script just changes values around, at worst you just won't notice a terrible amount of improvements.
I forget where paranoid settings are located, but it's probably there.
Finally, RELAX. If worst comes to worst, and you really screw up, you can just flash the original rom .zip on top, without having to wipe anything (if it gets even worse, you'll just have to backup your apps, wipe everything, and then restore them). Flashing ROMs are extremely safe, so long as you do everything right. Seeing that you successfully a ROM, and you were able to notice how much free ram you had, I would say you're better off than a lot of people.
But just in case, giving a full break down of what you did will allow us to know if you did indeed mess up somewhere along the way.

You need to flash Gapps, it doesn't mention that it's included in the thread
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Flash it normally, no need to wipe (although wiping cache+dalvik) should help.
for paranoid settings, check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32720700&postcount=4
Your flashing process was correct, so I don't think anything was wrong there.

Virus???? Idk but phone is messed up

Ok here it goes. my network service is off so i use my droin inc for games and such. running custom rom wildstang83 IceCream Scencless 1.0. im not sure what happened to my phone but i left for 3 days and come back to my phone being totally jacked up. It wot dl apps the google play reverted back to the old market icon. wont save my passwords for google sighn in. every time i go to youtube it says to re dl the google play services. im sure other stuff is messed up too. i have tried to flash another rom but when it gets loaded back up it keeps saying process. whatever failed and there a bunch of those that loop and i have to pull battery. when i try to factory reset it says everything was formatted but when i reboot phone its the sme as it was before apps and all. So is there anyone out there who can help me with this. Sorry if i posted in the wrong place or what not. i wasnt sure where to post it cuz its kinda an advanced question but not really a question just need help.
not a virus but it does sound like your phone might have exhausted all the space in the /data folder. I had a similar thing happen to me before I rooted and fixed my phone where i exhausted the space, itt went a factory reset and put the phone into an unusable state.
i don;t know anything about the rom you are running but are rooted and have CWM installed? if so, you should be able flash a new ROM to your device, GAPPS and optionally, the low space disk fix.

Yes i do have cwm but i tried to flash a new rom via the recovery section. after i choose the zip to flash everything goes as expected untill after the reboot and it goes into the setup part where u have to put gmail password and stuff in then it basically freezes up with unlimited process failures. but i will try again. cant hurt from where it is now.
if you are not doing so already, i would wipe cache and dalvik cache after flashing the rom. that may fix the FCs.
I would also suggest you run a newer jelly bean ROM like Tiny;s 5-16 with his version of GAPPS(4-05) version plus the low space disk fix so you can maintain parity with what is the latest.
I am currently using evervolve 6-25 and it is working well for me.
the reason I say that is these newer JB roms have the ability to let you skip the activation easily. I don;t know if it was some feature of GB roms but the activation wizard in the JB roms seem to be better my opinion.
When switching to a different ROM, it is crucial to wipe /system. This can be a source of FCs. Also, if switching, it is also a good idea to do factory reset.

I just flashed another rom i used in the past by the same dev and so this is my step by step. 1. choose zip from sd. 2. factory reset. 3. wipe dalvik cache. 4. wipe cache partition. If this doesnt work i will try jb roms but i would hate to have to dump the dev that im useing. there the most stabe roms i have come across so far

what do u mean wipe /system. where do i find that. only reason i ask is cuz maybe ive never done that. but i have never had a problem withthe other 15 roms i have flashed before so thats why im so confused about what happened to my phone. all i did was shut it off and leave it home. nothing changed from my daily use before that and it was working top notch before i shut it off
im getting settings fc. youtube fc, my uploads fc, market fc, clock widget fc, internet fc, rss reader fc, htc sence fc, all those off of a fresh flash ad new sd card
Just lost my bckups that were saved on sd card so now i cant even get on it i dont get it. its not bricked but yet it i unstabe to run any rom but the preivious saved backup (now there deleted)
maybe the rom you downloaded is corrupt. worst case scenerio is that your phone is on it;s last legs.....
i would suggest you try downloading the JB rom and Gapps plus the low space fix.

it;s kind of proven to work in my opinion. the 5-16 build is pretty stable.
what I do is flash the rom zip, gapps zip and low space zip, then wipe cache and dalvik. it probably should not make a difference but I am using TWRP as my recovery instead of CWM.
goodluck!

Thank u and its still not working. probably just takeing a dump on me now it is just bootlooping.
when i do a factory reset i get a wipe completed. but it says "no app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext" could that be part of the issue?? ive never noticed that before
i don;t know if switching to TWRP might help you but it might be worth a try. maybe a coincidence but the last time I had a screw up on my Dinc installing a ROM, i was using CWM. I switch right after that. I think i did read something about TWRP specifically supporting the EXT4 Low space fix.
maybe someone more knowledgable can chime in.
