Well, it's 6 am here and I decided to do a little experiment with my phone to boost my signal.
I simply placed aluminum foil over the signal connector thingy and it did happen to boost it up to 3 steady bars, when I would normally get about 1.
This may or may not work for you. Let me know if this actually worked for you.

Pictures would be great. There are two antenna connectors in the back cover, one near the bottom and one near the top.

Yeah, that's exactly were I placed them and closed the cover. It molds right in.

There are 4 contacts under the phone, and 4 on the back cover. 2 of them (next to the camera) are linked. I suspect the contacts next to the camera are the looped GPS antenna.
The other 2 contacts are separate radios. One is wifi and the other is mobile (they are not looped). These should not be bridged (this can cause problems, actually). I think the outer contact is mobile and the inner (has the longer yellow strip on stock back cover) is wifi.
I've been kinda studying the back cover antenna thing and I've come to a bit of a strange conclusion: I knew the yellow bit was conductive paint or ink, but I'm suspecting that the yellow bit is the entire antenna as I can't find any other connectivity, wires, etc.
I know I've been defending this device in terms of signal quality, but I'm thinking, now, that this can be improved a lot. I'm probably going to be destroying my back cover in the name of science this weekend. I know I can get a replacement back cover so no big deal!

Interesting. I will have to do some science as well, with FOIL!
anyone know where I can get conductive paint from? Maybe thickening the pre painted paint will make a better connection with the signal thingies?
And about the pics, sorry I can't post any, my phone is the only camera I have at the moment.

Conductive ink is generally composed of a conductive polymer or contains metallic dust for conductivity. It's generally used as a cheaper method of bridge contacts between conductors. I've never seen it used this way before.
One thing I know about wireless signaling is length of antenna wire is important. I don't know the exact math for determining optimal length by frequency, but I do know the longer the better, preferably long enough to receive a full wavelength.
To be honest I'd be quite surprised if the conductive ink is being used as the antenna. However, I really can't find evidence to state otherwise.

The inner contact is actually the mobile radio. I'm getting signal with bus wire but it's not a marked improvement. This is connected to the full 400' spool, though.
I've already damaged my back cover so I'm pretty much committed to this experiment. Going to do a little more testing before I commit to modification.

Eh, don't worry about it It's not gonna bother me to have to buy a new one.
After a bit of testing using a 1' length of wire (used solder to build a flat contact on the end and pressed it in, feeding the wire through the tiny hold...for testing) I've found the signal strength marginally improves, but the data speeds improve quite a bit. In one of my rooms I tend to get poor signal/speed (pipes? not sure) but was able to double my speeds. However, the connection was still pretty unstable.
The end with my homemade flat contact broke and I don't feel like making another one right now. I have a temporary solution that works, but is a bit fragile.

Very interested to hear your results, nimdae. I was almost going to play around with this the other day.
I do have a suspicion though that some of the antenna may actually be "hidden" in the cover. I managed to carve off and expose some metallic looking material where you open the case at. Not sure if it is indeed since I didn't go any further.
Foil worked for me!!! My signal just went from -125 dbm to 98 dbm!!

any body heard of any sort of metal or steel type back for the evo? i really liked the back for the hd2 the solid cool feeling of the metal was awsome and would be a greta feature to add to the evo 4g. make it look and feel more bad ass Lol

I am no electrical engineer but I decided to have some fun doing experiments. I took a sheet of aluminum foil and placed it behind the phone. The signal strength dropped from -73 to -87. So clearly having metal over antennas will block the signal.
I also recall hearing that is why they removed the aluminum back cover from the first iPhone.
This is just a warning in case you ever do find an after market metal cover. It might hurt your signal strength and in turn battery life.

The solution would be to do what Apple did for the iPhone 4. Use the outer metal rim as the antenna. Honestly, I think it's a stroke of genius.

We will see how it plays out. I am quite sure touching an antenna with your hands reduces its signal. So that design might not work out as well as it would seem.
In my testing I found holding the EVO at different points would increase/decrease the signal. It should be the same with the iPhone.

iphone 4 metal frame is surrounded the top section is the main area where they have placed the antenna circuit the rest is the design flow. so it will work good enuf, I am not trying to compete with Evo or anything bad about evo just telling you something. evo for sprint is still the best .. the Ball is in sprin't court now its up to them how they continue with it such as by updating to 2.2 and how fast these things will count.

There is in fact a warning in the documentation that came with the EVO, which states that placing your fingers on the portion of the phone left of the LED flashes, may interfere with your signal. I don't recall if it's in the Getting Started guide or the main user manual.

Oh I wasn't trying to make this an EVO vs iPhone debate. Just a general observation about antennas. It was also a problem I noticed on the EVO. Your hand/body will reduce the signal if placed in certain locations. I have seen this happen on TVs that are grabbing signal from the air, radios, and cordless phones.
So all I am saying it putting the iPhone's antennas on the outside might not be the stroke of genius people think it is. Not to mention it would be difficult to hold that phone without touching 2 different antennas at once. That might cause cross interference.
Hmm maybe I should start a thread specifically for antenna discussion, this title is a little misleading, and we went off into a tangent.

I heard this in another thread, but I am not seeing it. My back cover sits totally flush and looks great. Did I get lucky, or is there something else I'm missing?

Someone else posted somewhere that they put a piece of paper (folded once?) between the battery and the cover, and that pushed the center out enough to bring the outer edges flush.... could try that.

That fix worked for me. Probably could be solved with a thin piece of foam glued to the inside of the cover too.

i've modded my cover to fit perfectly, and solidly. i'll post a thread later tonight.
So what about the HTC Legend with the aluminum unibody? Do they use the whole body as a antenna?

I'm an electrical engineer, and I will confirm this. Perhaps someone could attach the metal back to the antenna somehow, though. That would be interesting.
I remember a few months back someone had a tpu case and they cut out sections on the back of the case to fix the problem of the case blocking the gps signal. I was wondering if anybody remembers this and could point me to where that was. They had instructions and pictures I'm pretty sure. Hope someone remembers this.

The gps antenna is in the flashlight cover. There's a thread in here detailing a hardware mod that helped me. Think its "gps 1000000% working"

Thanks I just kinda want to start by modifying my tpu case and see if that helps before I dive in n start messing with phone hardware. If i remember correctly the guy who did the mod to his case also cut off a part on lower part of the case where the darker part of the Desire HD is. Is that where the wifi antenna is??

The antenna is at the top where the flash is, as stated. There is a cable running down the side to the GPS module at the bottom of the case.
I cut my own TPU case around the flash cover and the improvement was not that great, In the end I took the case off without trying anything further.
I would suggest cutting around the flash cover with a few holes down the left side and then another larger cut out at the bottom directly in line with flash cover, but be prepared to waste the case

I cut out a rectangle the size of the entire flash cover that pops out. It greatly improved my gps signal. I get a lock within seconds when near a window whereas before i either wouldnt get a lock or it would take minutes. I may try cutting out a part on the bottom on a secondary case to see if that helps even further but at the moment I am very satisfied with my fix. So if anyone is have gps problems try seeing if its your case before going the hardware route.

I used the GPS Test app and set my phone right beside a window and it would take about a minute to get a lock. I then took off my case and I got a lock within seconds so obviously something with my case is blocking the GPS signal. So I cut out a rectangle where the antenna is located. I then test using the app and get a lock within 15 seconds. Its not as fast as without the case but it is way quicker than before. If you don't believe me that's cool. It could be specific to my phone or my case, I'm just saying for the people that are having issues with GPS signal and you have a case, take the case off and see if the signal is better. If it is then your case is blocking the signal and if not then you might have to do the hardware fix that is covered in a bunch of threads.
Hiya, the case that came with my extended battery pushes down on the connector prongs more than the stock case did. Over time, after taking the case off again and again one of them was bent too many times and snapped off. I noticed the antenna bridges the connection which you can see in the first picture. Anyway, I did a fairly messy soldering job but the second picture is trying to show a tiny wire connecting both connectors together. I get signal again but the question remains, does the amount of metal touching the antenna pad affect the signal strength?
I have another month to return the phone at Costco who will just take it no questions asked, but is it worth the hassle. Do you think I should just keep the phone since it works well otherwise, is there a better fix, or am I just experiencing the placebo effect and everything is fine again. Thanks for any advice!

these anttenna connectors on this phone are horrible. they are the poorest design. i had a flawed one that got bent somehow within 1 day of having the phone, i got a replacement cause it was poor workmanship and considered their fault by assurion so i lucked out, my 1 tab on the bottom left was bent then snapped(tabs below sd) and it didnt effect my signal at all compaired to the other one they sent me. also i think the ones up where urs is broke is for the gps (just an edu guess).
and if u do get a new phone from costco, ditch that bum back and case u have that caused the prob i got an htc oem from vzw for 37$ after 25% disc. that was batt and back. so if that messes up the tabs at least i can say i used oem htc.
I'd love to ditch it for a different back but have a 3600mAh extended battery that doubles the phone width.. I'm open to ideas though! This might be a bad idea, but could adding a tiny bit of solder underneath the pins where it bends (a very tiny amount) to secure it more in place, help it from breaking in the future? I wonder...

I could find nothing. i started looking into the process of melting aluminum, which is surprisingly easy, as is creating the brushed effect. as of right now i currently have my back cover pushed into some drywall mud (no modeling clay) and drying so that i can form the second half of my mold. just thought i would inform you guys of my insanity!

I think antenna reception would be a bigger concern. Still, I would totally plunk down some cash to buy one, if you figure out how to do something easily repeatable...

i'll definitely let you guys know how it goes. good to know people care because it will keep me from stopping half-way through. haha. i'll probably do most of it this weekend. the drywall mud was pretty dumb, im probably going to use a greensand mold and see what i can do with that. ill just do the dividing line along the back of the back cover.
the bad news: greensand is hard as hell to find at stores or anything
good news: i have scrap aluminum, and i can borrow my girlfriend's dad's propane torch. i went out and bought plaster of paris tonight. Going to set up the mold tomorrow morning and once it is hardened i can start the process of melting+pouring+setting the aluminum in the mold.
turns out walmart sells plaster of paris in a big purple box covered in flowers, which made it somewhat difficult to find considering nobody there knew what it was....
bottom half of the mold is set and drying. here's hoping i can get it back out. haha.
Looks like it might be kinda hard making sure the holes for the speaker are cut out properly!
i made sure the plaster got far enough into the holes to make an imprint, but not far enough to seal the back to the mold.

thats good! Do you have a dremel or something else to smoothen out edges? Molds typically create a lot of extra garbage on the side that needs to be cut off... Your using aluminum right?
If yours comes out good and doesnt hinder the signal quality too bad, i think i might do the same

yeah, i've got plenty of tools and scrap aluminum. depending on how well it turns out/how it affects the phone i may offer to sell them to people on here.
that isnt to say that buying one will be the only way to get one. I will be sure to post a full and detailed tutorial when i am finished for anyone adventurous enough to attempt it.
No to be a pessimist but did you notice that there is something on the original cover that seems to be taped in the cover? I figure an antenna?

You may want to look at the back cover a little more closely. The warning message to not scratch the sheet makes me think the back cover also helps to serve as an antenna possibly??? Not sure, but it seems odd to have the warning.
About the sticker being an antennae, that never crossed my mind. For some reason I always assumed it was something to distribute heat away from the battery.
Both possibilities seem very plausible though.

it crossed my mind. however, like i said earlier, i was using the phone without a back for over a day and a half and didnt notice any adverse side effects (aside from the battery falling out.)

Ok, so this isn't anything special...yet. But I do intend to see how much more I can find out over the weekend.
I decided I was gonna see what's under that back panel, so here are some pics, and what I did.
What you need:
-Patients
-Precision Screw Driver (Philips Head)
-Thin Guitar Pick
1st, Remove the top and bottom covers on the phone. This will expose 4 of the 5 screws you need to remove.
2nd, Peel up the bottom label. BE VERY CAREFUL AND VERY SLOW!!! This will expose the 5th screw to remove the back.
***This bottom label is designed to snap away from itself if removed too quickly. I don't know if this would void anything, so don't chance it.
3rd, Using a guitar pick on the HDMI PORT SIDE of the phone, carefully wedge open the seam down the side of the phone. Once this is done completely on that side, the backplate just kinda peels off, so to speak.
It appears as if there are a total of 6 water indicator stickers once the cover is removed.
NOTE: When you put the backplate back on, there is a single snap just above the camera that has to be secured before the top cover will go back on properly. BE CAREFUL, it looks like it can break easy.
Good tutorial. At least we have a tutorial on how to take apart the back of the ion. Hopefully there's future battery replacements that offer better battery life so we can use this method to change the batteries or other needed purposes.
Do you think it is possible to change the battery? It'll be great knowing that once this battery died I can buy a replacement.

Getting to the battery is my goal. I've a second part-time job at a battery shop, so... once someone or myself can get to it, I can see if it can be ordered or if we can build it in the lab.

UPDATE: This coming weekend, I will be taking this phone apart some more. Any warranty stickers I encounter, if any, will not be touched unless I can do so and still be able to reapply it. I will be taking pictures of everything I do, and will post them here. Stay tuned...

At Flash, my battery level is too low to result in dead phone, I tried to fix by simply removing the hardware but it's a big mistake, just flash the full charge the battery when everything is all right, no need to remove and reinsert the battery cable. sorry I do not have time yet capture
So I was having major trouble and decided to try and take the battery out. got one step further than tribalartgod, and took off the second plate by removing the torx screws (t5 fyi) and got nowhere after that. any who, Just thought I'd post the pic of whats next.
btw got the phone back up and running just had to charge a long time and reflash.
Did they have to have the top of the plastic connector open almost like a lid to pull out the ribbon? That's how most all of them are on the PSP. Maybe the same on the phone. Thanks for the pics.

Sorry, I didn't think to take any pictures of the plastic backing part. But, no I didn't have to remove any ribbons. Its just another plastic backing. I think there might have been some connectors but they were just contacts, no pins or plugs.
Oh and make sure the sim card and removable memory are out when you remove the plastic because they slide through the plastic into the slots. Its helpful to have a snap tool or guitar pick. I started from the bottom of the phone near the camera button and worked my way up and around. These snaps are harder to pop off too.
Nice. I appreciate the tip. I'm so behind on things I want to and need to do with this phone. I only get about 4 hours a week I can play, so.. I'll get to do everything I say I will, it just may be delayed.

test points?
after looking at both of your brave pictures. i noticed a slot under the sticker on the right side, in tribalartgod's pics, where you can see contacts. also in Guregnack's pics the plastic is gone and contact points are exposed.
could these be test points for SETool unlocking?
i have the at&t ion an have no 'official' unlock method. have seen the paid test point method for alot of other xperia's. i got my ion for free so,why not pay to unlock it.

any idea what the prongs by the flash are for? look a bit similar to SGS3's wireless charging cover contacts. I could be hallucinating though.

I actually just reflashed mine, myself. Sucks.
I notice in your photos there appear to be two more water indicator sticks. If they are, I say bravo to Sony... Placing those at various levels could tell them the extent of water damage. Pretty smart move if you ask me.

most likely its nfc antenna connectors ,
nfc tags are working only if i hold it just right next to camera
im having problem removing the bottom cover. it seems tightly secure; i dont really want to scratch anything lol.
I just took out the back cover and see in the little bit that's see through on top of the white sticker label (the rectangle see thorugh thing that is covered by some orange plastic) what is that? because mine looks like it's broken but it might be just like that abnyways... It doesn't look neat compared to the others and that it looks like it's burnt or something but I'M NOT SURE, cant see it properly
