Inspire and dhd memory question - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering with the dhd having 1.5gb and the inspire having 4gb, is the 2.5gb hidden on the dhd in a partition or is it a totally different set up.I know the inspire runs on different bands and is 4g but wondered about the memory.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App

the telus dhd and inspire 4g are both A9192 devices and are identcal hardware wise (other than the at& model having at&t on the casing where it would otherwise say htc in chrome)
its not 4g, only 3.5g (hspa)
there is no wimax or lte capability with the phone (4g)
the internal memory in both is 1.5gb just like the A9191 everyone else in the world has. another lie on behalf of at&t is how it called the 4gb sd card that comes with the phone its 'internal memory'
hope that clears it up

Ohh so its the same phone just different bands. At&t don't know the difference between a memory card and internal memory then. I was getting excited then I thought it was 4gb internal and then a sd slot. Also of places say it is capable of upto 36gb of total memory too.... good selling ploy that
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App

ya, AT&T likes to bend the truth...
but all carriers do, because even through the wimax and lte tech falls into the 4G category (basics of it anyways) its still waaaay to slow to even be able to be considered true 4G (100mb/s)
and technically it is 4mb Internal memory, because the SD card does sit 'inside' the phone. lmao

Nope. Unfortunately it isn't.
of course it's not! shoot.
Nope, no 3G for Dash. But even then, 3G is only going to be for voice when it is first started on TMobile.

3G only for voice? That makes no sense. 3G is used for data, and GSM is used for voice as far as I understand it in current implementations. At least that's the way, I understand my Touch Cruise is operating on AT&T's network. And if that wasn't the case, my Touch Cruise would have an atrocius talk time.
My question is: when T-Mo rolls out 3G, will the data plan increase from $19.99 to something else? I've read up on the 3G rollout--but not much. So I haven't run across anything talking about a possible spike in price. Though unfavorable, it would seem like a logical move for T-Mo. They currently offer the least expensive data plan vs. the "Big Three", but they also happen to be the only carrier NOT offering 3G support.

my previous phone was a nokia E61 with no camera and it was 3g compatible.. as it used ofr fatser sreaming and data downloads.
I expect data rates to increase slightly with 3G on T-Mobile. They'll probably make it the same, or slightly less, than AT&T/Verizon.
The Shadow II is supposed to be one of the first WinMo 3G devices to hit T-Mobile.
TMO has already started it's 3g roll out in New York city, TMO will setup a total of 25 markets this year 2008 with rest of TMO'S markets coming in next year. Get all the facts here http://www.tmonews.com

I Got The Word From TMO
The 3g device that I want from TMO will be released 9/1/08 per TMO, yeah! Anybody know when 16GB SDHC Card will be hitting the streets, I might have start out with 8GB SDHC Card. This is what blowing my mind, and the word is that TMO'S 3g will be faster than the current AT&T'S 3g. I thought all 3g speed was the same, I guess it's not. Can anybody explain what is {TX} on 3g devices...........!
My understanding is that Tmos 3g will be 7.2mps where others are 3.6mps... so double the speed. They will also be on 1700mhz band which is currently used for government security stuff(reason why they are slowly rolling it out is it needs to be vacated first). tHING THAT SUCKS ABOUT THAT IS THAT WE WILL BE STUCK WITH TMOBILE CHOICE OF PHONES. Although hopefully they will make their phones worthwhile at that point. I know everyone is going crazy about the blackberry they are gonna have

You are talking about the BlacKBerry 9000 Bold 3g, wifi, new updated media player, 2.0 MP camera, 128MB flash memory, 1GB built in memory, 8/16GB SDHC Card slot, 624 MHz processor. I got a Dell Axim X51v with a 624 MHz Processor running Lenny's latest 6.1 beta 5 ROM, I call it my UFO device, because it has UFO speeds. Rim has now changed the game and set a new higher standard for smartphones, it even has a rtsp:// youtube player built in, oh my God, RIM has stolen my blu-ray player..........!

It's a touch screen device with 4GB of built in memory, it has no room (slot) for a expansion micro SD/SDHC Card slot. So the Diamond is a no go with me. The BlackBerry Bold 9000 was on that list also, now that's the device I'm waiting for, coming soon, my next smartphone toy..............!
You guys in the USA and Europe are lucky. Here in Canada, although highspeed internet is available on our cell phones, the data rates offered by the operators just kill it. Paying 40$ for a whooping 8 MB per month, anyone interested?
$15 2 MB $10/MB if over limit
$25 4 MB $10/MB if over limit
$40 8 MB $7/MB if over limit
$60 30 MB $7/MB if over limit
$80 500 MB $3/MB if over limit
$100 1 GB $1/MB if over limit

yes everthing is great about the diamond and it is the shadowIII, but the lack of a memory expansion slot is just a huge downfalll for a multimedia phone. htc should have used an 8gig instead. maybe then this downfall wouldnt be so bad. but yea this must be some sort of sale technique.

[Q] New Sim Card

I recently purchased a G2 and was wondering if there is any benifit in activating the new simcard? I live in an area where 3G is everywhere but inside the city limits. I used to work at At&t way back when it was Cingular and I briefly remeber telling people something about upgrading to the 64 or 128 bit simcard (can't remember for sure). I have been using the same simcard for two+ years. If I travel to area's outside the city, I can use 3G speeds.
Your Knowledge is greatly appriciated.
slim
Why not?
You have nothing to loose!
...and I'm nearly certain it doesn't give you any extra benefit; I've had my SIM Since, the T-Mo Wing[?]
& Its still Going Strong!
Just replace it the sim technolgy has been the same for several years but if its real old the new 4g network might suffer a bit but still won't be to bad but it comes with a new one so just update it. Make sure that you back up any contacts you may have saved on it first though
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I called a T-mo rep about it and he said the sim cards have a expeiry date based on network transitions. He told me to activate the new sim simply because it was able to "recognize" more available bandwidth and that it did not expire from transitioning from umts, hsdpa, and hspa+ quickly where as he said mine would. (I find this bogus because my voicestream SIM card still worked)
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I personally think that T-Mo are talking BS. I'd be happy to be wrong if someone can provide proof that they're actually correct on this issue.
Actually its probably best. I checked my old sim card with the new sim card and the copper connector on the back is different from the new and old sim cards. Plus after activating the new one, I didn't have hiccups transfering from E to 3G to H whereas before it would randomly drop from H to E. But thats for me.

[Q] Looking to purchase the Desire Z

I am coming from a WinMo 6.1 AT&T Tilt (TYTN II) I bought it about 2 years ago and it has the Dutty Series ROM. Good phone but it just doesnt keep up on the web. Been through a bind with the screen absorbing some water but replaced it and it back to normal. I am looking at the Desire Z but I see on Ebay that a lot of G2 are being passed off as Z's. I know the main difference is the ROM available, One has 1.5GB and the other supposedly has 4GB, that is of no importance to me as I will be purchasing a 16GB microSD card. How does the HTC Sense feel to you guys? Is it worth it?
I was aiming for the Win7 platform but its such a new interface, I fear it will have bugs and as usual, the end-user is going to be the tester and have to deal with the bugs. I was pointed towards the Desire Z by a friend who had it and loved it but had to change carriers and couldn't take the phone with him.
What is the opinion of the forum of G2 and the Z. Is it better to go with one or the other? I absolutely need the keyboard. My fingers do not fair well with an on-screen keyboard. The other thing I would like to do is use it in The States but also have capability in Europe, specifically Greece as I fly back and forth periodically. Would the bands work between the two countries both on 2G and 3G networks? I don't cruise on the net a whole bunch because of my current phone, but I am hoping to change that with the new purchase.
Pete
Hi there, sorry to see you've had no response to your questions, I can't really answer as to which is best of the two, but I can tell you that I have owned the desire z for a few weeks now and like yourself, I must have a physical qwerty board as I can't get on with on screen keyboards very well. The desire z is a great handset, it's quick enough, smooth enough, has enough room for apps, and I actually quite like sense, when I first had my HTC desire about a year ago when they first came out, I couldn't have tried harder to get sense off of it, and have had a stream of "bare bones" android phones since. I have to say that having sense on it now has bought a few real bonuses to the table that I'd shrugged off before. Granted, its been improved on the z now, and as a result I would say that imho its better have now than not.
The memory is the same on both. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#The_Missing_2GB
If you are with a network that has 4G or are likely to change networks in the foreseeable future then get the G2 to make use of it, if that is not an issue then the DZ would suffice as that is the only difference. But check what bands each phone supports before you make a decision pal.
I am pretty sure the G2 and Desire Z have exactly the same download and upload speed, except the G2 doesn't come with Sense by default and operates on 1700/2100 frequencies. Bell's Desire Z will get 3G on AT&T but I think it has the 2100 band removed so it may not get 3G in Europe.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I came from the Tytn II also -- the only thing I regretted (at first) was not being able to use my considerable collection of bought Windows Mobile 6 software, but I was screwed anyway since WinMo 7 wasn't going to be backwards compatible. So now I'm an android geek, and loving it.
Desire Z is an amazing phone.

Yeah Greece runs on 900/1800 & 2100 for 3G....So I need to maybe buy a phone with these specs. Perhaps I can get lucky and buy it from a UK website cheaper. They want close to $750 for it in a retail store of Greece.
One other question....I am searching for A7272 which is the international version HTC Desire Z. I was looking through some auctions and the Desire Z / G2 say that they have a S-LCD display....when searching for A7272, the sellers claim that the screen is AMOLED....Is there truth to this?

It's not AMOLED, it's S-LCD. But it's a very good display.
Which networks do you want your phone to run on ? Here's a summary of which 3G bands the G2/DZ versions operate on (note that you can *not* change this via a radio update, it's set in hardware) :
G2 - Bands IV(1700) and I (2100).
Desire Z - Band I (2100) and Band VIII (900).
Bell Desire Z - Band II (1900) and Band V (850) - same bands as AT&T uses in the US.

Well I absolutely need the 900/2100 (2G / 3G respectively for Greece) because I spend a good chunk of time there. As far as the US is concerned, I run on T-Mobile there. Worst case scenario, I'll keep my TYTN II for use in the States.

Note that both machines have nearly identical hardware. They BOTH have 4GB physical RAM however this is permanently partitioned at the factory so that approx 2GB is usable. There are threads on this board that discuss this at length. Upshot is that we have 2GB effective RAM in both the Desire Z and the G2.
So I am poking around the net...I found that the G-2 from T-Mobile has Quad Band and UMTS for 1700/2100....Greece runs on 900/1800 GSM & UMTS 2100...Big question is...whats the difference between buying a Desire Z and a G2. I am looking at about a $150 gap in the price....Is the UI different? Hardware different? Screen? Some people are saying theirs has a TFT...others say LCD....even found one that said AMOLED (which I KNOW is wrong)
It looks like the G2 will run in Greece...but I don't care too much for that Google Interface...Can I drop that UI and put something else? Can I load up HTCSense and still register the G2 on the site and have those options or is that strictly a Desire Z option?

The only real difference are the radio bands (fixed in hardware, you can't change it) and the hardware keyboard layout. They do come with different ROMs, Sense on the DZ and without Sense on the G2. Same screens (S-LCD), same memory, same everything else.
Yes, you can flash a Sense ROM onto a G2 or vice versa. If you have a Sense ROM you should be able to use HTCSense.com (though that functionality is not finished yet by HTC).
I recommend you choose your phone based on the radio band support. You can easily change to a different ROM if you want to. So I think you need a DZ based on the radio bands (DZ in Europe has Band I - 2100, and Band VIII - 900 ; the G2's band 1700/2100 is a different band, Band IV).

Clear?
I upgraded from the Tilt2 to the Desire Z, and was completely blown away at how much better this phone is. Switching from the 3 year old Tilt to the DZ is going to absolutely blow your mind. You will not want to use your old Tilt anymore after you upgrade, trust me (except as an emergency backup device).
As steviewevie mentioned, you should pick the version that has the radios you need, since this is a hardware thing, and can't be changed. The software is completely changeable. You can always flash a Sense ROM onto the G2. Sounds like you need to buy either a Euro Desire Z or the T-Mob G2, depending on which will give you 3G in the country you spend the most time in.
Also, Sense is really just an enhancement to Android. Lots of elements of the Android OS still remain. And lots of what Sense does, can be accomplished with third party apps and homescreen widgets. So you can alway try that route, if you decide to get a G2 and are gun shy about ROM flashing.
I agree that Windows Phone 7 is too new an OS to invest in at the moment. App support is going to be slow to build up steam. It took Android the better part of 2 years before the app market really started reaching critical mass. And it really remains to be seen whether WP7 can really survive in the current smartphone environment. MS really has a tough fight in front of them if they want to prove themselves a viable competitor to Apple and Android.
Bottom line, if the hardware keyboard is a must, the Desire Z/G2 is the best phone around right now. You won't be disappointed if you buy it.

The HD2 specs are somewhat behind those of the Vision, and my understanding is an Android port is never going to run as well as a phone that runs it natively (but not speaking from experience on the HD2 specifically). And I hate to admit it, but WM6 is dead and needs to be buried. I don't miss it for a second. If the Desire HD is a available in your market, I can see that as a strong option. Otherwise, the Vision does not have many legitimate contenders right now.

[Q] Does Desire HD A9191 get 3G on TMOUS??

Couldn't find an answer for this question sorry. I am thinking of buying the Desire HD A9191 but I want to make sure I will get at least 3G here in San Diego on T-Mobile. Thanks in advance for some assistance.
Sorry but no. You'll only be able to manage EDGE. the sensation 4g is right around the corner I would suggest that.
Sent from my TARDIS using XDA App
desire hd a9191 model quad band 3G
Actually I believe this specific desire HD will get 3g on tmous they claim the a9191 model to be quad band 3G not just quad band GSM... and also say works with all carriers T-Mobile is listed so I would imagine u *#*#4636#*#* and then hit menu select bands then T-Mobile US then the correct radio and or ril...T-Mobile EU is in list too... it may depend on where you are located, I'm in DC and I knew someone who got H 3G on euro milestone on T-Mobile using that method and that phone has the 900/2100mhz, I held a sensation today and it has less ram and is 100% plastic and the screen is narrower... I'm with thus Guy on an a9191 Desire HD with the full unibody aluminum housing.. the phone is so nice I went and got the att version unlocked so its an inspire 2G now and am rocking edge (the E is such an ugly site someone make a theme that replaces edge icon with 4G just to trick my mind lol) just cause its worth the trade offphone if u wondering why i think this device rockd u probly have only used on sense ui rom its all about great its the combo of a perfectly tuned CM7.1 with this amazing device... but yea trying to get some confirmed info also on the a9191 version ofcourse ill get it and it will end up working but then some **** like att will own T-Mobile then and the stupid inspire will get 3G/4G anyway... why is it that the phone u want never offered by your carrier... if someone can confirm this please do thanks
This model is not quadband 3g. T-Mobile USA runs on1700/2100 for 3g . This model uses 900/2100. So their is a chance you might be able to pick up 3g, but it depends what frequency they are using in your specific area. If they use 1700 in SD then your stuck on edge if they use 2100 then you'll get 3g.
But like I recommended the sensation 4g is right around the corner. With that your guaranteed 3g comparability plus a better screen, dual core
Sent from my TARDIS using XDA App
I automatically shot down the quadband 3G stated on this a9191 model desire HD... but in several sited places to purchase the phone it clearly states quadband 3G not quadband GSM like everyother device... it also says worldwide 3G will work on any carrier...
The sesnsation is not a worthy replacement for this device... like I said above its all plastic yes its dual core but has less ram... ram is much more needed then a second core when the single is overclocked to 1.5ghz its stupid fast and will use half the battery that the sensation will... the screen is narrowed and stretched on sensation... I prefer the square brick style of the dhd... sensation may be out in a day or too but if not getting contract or upgrade price on it why bother if dhd a9191 will get hsdpa on tmous... sensation is $550 off contract dhd $400 to $550 and all the development is done for dhd already... no waiting for working perm root s-off and engineering bootloader... I know where I am in DC I've seen a euro 900/2100 milestone get hsdpa here... so I'm good even if it turns out to not be quad band 3G.. but have clearly read that this specific dhd is able to pull hsdpa from any carrier worldwide... its unbranded and sold as unlocked only by websites there is not carrier tied to this device.... yes in the past getting 3G in us and worldwide was not an option but think how long could that remain as a worldwide industry standard... there's phones listed comming out for T-Mobile that show both T-Mobile and att 3g bands on a single device... clearly as technology keeps up at its current rate its not hard to believe that this day may have finally come upon us with woldwide 3G... ofcourse there's no advertising for these devices as then carriers wouldn't be able to sell contracts.... think about the GSM evo 3D comming soon.... wtf is that all about and what good would it be if it didn't have this same technology that is supposedly wrapped up in this very similar desire HD of the specific a9191 part# no other phone on any of the sites selling that model say will get 3G worldwide on any carrier T-Mobile aswell as at&t and many others are listed... and I also knew someone that had a UK tmobile G1 and came to visit here in states and upon getting off plane he had edge connection.. so called T-Mobile and was told to switch to US 3G Band by dialing *#*#4636#*#* and he did this and his UK G1 dream connected on 3G... so if u like the inspire 4G, the Thunderbolt, desire HD, evo 4G or. 3D because of the physical appearance or heavy/ solid/metal feel then u will not like the 100% plastic htc sensation... yes that's a nice feature of sensation to be able to change housing as fast as removing batt cover so u will not need any protection as if u drop sensation and screw it up u will be able to buy new entire exterior housing for under $20 on eBay....the only thing giving the sensation any wieght is the battery and the thick contoured tempered digitizer glass... it is not a worthy substitute for a nand flashed HD2 that's been done properly... and the stock sense 3.0 with all apps killed on sensation gives only 113mb ram.. that cpus will not be able to make up for that serious lack of ram... it is not 768mb like dhd or tbolt it must be like 620mb cause its only displaying Max in 530mb range so once again the pre spec sheets lie or the ppl reviewing these devices are retarded and can't take a minute to download a simple app that displays the actual hardware specs... its ridiculous... this isn't rocket science anyone reviewing a device for a forum should have atleast 1/2 a brain to catch these hyped up inaccurate pre release guess specs... its bull**** u put 1gb ram in your PC it displays 1024mb ram so how come when they say we have 768mb ram on phone it actually shows 620mb wtf? Here's screen shot of my inspire 4G Max available ram... I used same method to check sensation and it shows 530mb so how do both devices have 768mb.... (yes its an HTC inspire despite the moto blur look) http://db.tt/KQWMtT7
Maybe I answered my own question on the ram discrepency says now in free memory widget maximum amount of mem for users applications... I'm gonna guess that the missing 148mb is dedicated entirely to the system rom and apps and is never displayed... still doesn't really make much sense though cause if 238mb is pre designated to system on htc sensation then what is using up over 400mb after closing all background apps with atk? Sense UI 3.0 has gotta be one of the heaviest stock roms ever... junk .....if u want **** to look like sense use cm7.1 and make it look like sense or blur whatever... no excuse or good reason at all to use any rom that is not vanilla or cm based as your just killing your own android experience that is ofcourse if its an option for your device.... HD2 CM7.1 runs 100 times better then sensation on sense 3.0 and gets about same download speeds....hd2 little slower on speed test... 6000kbps vs 7000kbps and now that rom manager supports HD2 that was last feature needed to be equal to an official android device... if u have T-Mobile and want a fully modable HTC 4.3" there's your device.... HTC HD2 with nand flashed CM7.1 even with less ram then sensation has 150mb more free avail then sensation with no Widgets on screens.,..
Mardsta or whatever u answered dude first with no u will only get edge period.. then after hearing what I had to say u have changed your answer to yes maybe depending on your area... so r u just pissing in the wind? Clearly u have not actually taken the a9191 Device and tried to get 3G on tmous with it... so ur just guessing away and passing it off as fact.... if you do not know the answer 100% for sure don't act like it as it only make finding the correct info that much harder...
I actually did read both your responses even though long winded. In part you were right about my first answer. I had forgotten that in some places tmo will use the 2100 frequencies. They tend to use the 1700. Simple mistake.
I have used this model in question in the Los Angeles area. Not once did I pick up 3g on att or T-Mobile.
As to the sensation I offered it as a suggestion. You may not like it " maybe the open will. So get off your high horse. The dual core is actually more effiicient and battery friendly. Its the beauty of progress.

Wow, didn't mean to start such a pissing match guys. I ended up getting the Sensation and I love it. Who needs 3G, I now have 4G. This phone is amazing!

My bro just scouped one up (a9191) on Craig's list NYC and previous owner said would get 3G in queens but not Manhattan... hopefully not fulla****... currently trying everything possible to get it to work in NJ right outside Manhattan.... well see what happens...

[Q] Work on Bell Mobility

Will the HTC One X International work one the HSPA+ network of Bell Mobility in Canada?
When I looked at the specs of the Rogers model I was disappointed by the fact that it had only 16gb of storage and no provision for adding more. My phone is my main media player now and I don't like the idea that I will be eating bandwidth trying to sync it with Dropbox all of the time because I am out of local storage space.
Yes it works. Im using mine on Virgin Mobile which is the same as Bell.
How is it treating you? Does it work on both bands?
Been using mine since April 4 and havent had any reception issues. It works perfectly. It will work with all carriers except Wind & Mobilicity.
Thanks for the info. I want to get this model. I was hoping the Rogers one had the high storage count but I guess not. Tegra 3 Vs S4 Snapdragon wasn't much of an issue to me personally, both are amazing processors, but the killer for me was small storage space.
16gb for me is bare minimum especially if theres no memory expansion. And even if its 16gb, the available memory will probably be like 12gb. (My 16gb galaxy nexus has 13gb free space)
Even if my phone is 32gb the free space available is 25gb.
I wouldnt really bother about LTE, im very satisfied with the speeds i get with Virgin. I was with Bell before and they have the same speeds.
Tegra3/S4 - Both are very debatable performance wise.
I got this phone for its camera. And im very satisfied on its performance.
Yeah... that was about what I think... for the past eight months I've rocked my Sensation, and loved every minute of it, though keeping a weather eye to see if anything better is coming out and every time I turn and shake my head. The Galaxy Nexus was promising... up until they mentioned its camera sensor, 5mp... what were they thinking!
