No notification LED on my Incredible - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got a used Incredible. Everything seemed good on it, except the optical trackpad wasn't working. It'd work for button presses, but not navigation. After acquiring a screwdriver set ($6.15 total at Lowe's) that had T6, and watching a couple of videos on the Incredible teardown, I opened it up, re-seated the ribbon cable for the optical trackpad (it was slightly askew on one side), and it works perfectly now.
Well, close to perfectly. The notification LED doesn't seem to do anything at all. Never, not when charging, not when I have notifications, period.
I've not been able to find anything online specifically dealing with the notification LED. Is this something that might also just have a loose or improperly replaced cable, and I could conceivably fix easily? Or is it soldered to the mainboard, and if it's dead, it's dead?

LED notification also depends on the ROM.

Theres an application called "Light Flow" that lets you play with the LED settings and also as stated above there could be a software issue.
Also by some random chance the previous owner may have blacked it out. I've been annoyed with some leds before so I've cracked things open and sharpied them to death.

/offtopic a bit
LED notification is pretty useless anyway. It has never once let me know anything that I didn't know before. 1button to power screen on to see exactly if you have a missed call/text/low battery/if your phone is charging/ etc.

I don't miss it too much, I just would prefer for my phone to be -fully- functional.
When I had my Eris previously to this, I did find it handy to be able to glance at the phone from across the room and see if it was blinking. That's really my only "useful" loss.

Well, it's not doing anything on Any ROM. Stock, any Sense based ones, AOSP ones, nor even when charging.
bukithd - thanks, I'll check out Light Flow.

LED Notification flash - Not working?

I haven't fully tested this issue yet mainly because I've only had the phone for a few days... I wanted to check if anyone else had this problem.
Under Settings -> Sound & Display -> Notification Flash
I have all the options ticked.
In theory, whenever I have a missed call or a SMS or email etc, I should be able to tell that I need to check my phone be a little blinking light in the top right corner off the screen. I just came back to my phone and this LED wasn't blinking but when I turned on the phone, there was a missed call and a SMS.
Other times, it seemed to work fine.
Anyone else noticed this problem?
it only flashes for 5 mins and then stops. There is no way to change this without additional apps.

Oh... How disappointing. Pretty useless imo. Thanks for the info. I wonder if they will fix it. My previous phone, Touch Diamond, had something similar but it never stopped flashing until you looked at your missed calls.
Now that explains things. I tend to look for the led after I've not used the phone for a while. In my pocket or elsewhere. Quite a few times I've seen no flashing but have a notification in the top left. I thought it was another one of those little 'features' we keep finding.
Yeh i discovered this awhile back and it's annoying as hell, i just use a app called Missed Reminder which can be configured to allowed it to keep flashing indefinitely
I was just going to make a post about this. I thought the LED notification wasn't working at all on my Desire, since I've never seen it, but perhaps it had just stopped before I had the chance to catch it, then

What apps are you referring to? It would be nice to be able to have the LED flash longer.
I'm guessing this is to save battery time, I don't know how much power a small LED uses but it surely can't help with the already abysmal battery life
I first thought the LED was located behind the optical trackpad, because the trackball on my Hero could light up. I think the LED-notification is pretty dumb since it's almost invisible when it lights up. The lighting trackball was much much better
This is a known issue. I thought that did not happen in Android, but I guess I was wrong.
If the phone work in Windows Mobile, there are a registry key to let assign values to the options, so they are usable.

In Android, I have no clue... maybe my info help in any way.
PMoto
It would be nice to be able to change the flash time from the default 5 minutes, or atleast an option for no time limit.
I know it's to help save battery life, but I'm willing to say that the light flashing will use less battery then the back light coming on everytime I'm away from my phone for more then 5 minutes, from me checking to see if I have new messages, email, or missed phone calls.
Same issue with my recently purchased A40.
No blinking at all despite screen flash notification selected.
Hope someone can help

Couple of oddities...

Couple of things i've noticed....
First, does the notification LED have a mind completely of its own?? I get a voicemail...and the light flashes...then 2 minutes later get another voicemail and nothing.
Got an SMS, nothing showed...got another, nothing showed, just got one now and it starts flashing at me.
Secondly, when i've received an SMS, i've gone into messaging app...and the screen dimmed and came back again quickly, so i clicked on settings and it dimmed completely like an LCD with no backlight, exit settings and it comes back again, go back into settings and it goes etc etc. Lock screen, unlock and it works fine...bit weird.
The most annoying one is definitely the useless notication LED because...if i'm sat at my desk listening to music rather loud and i cant hear a notification because of the quiet speaker, or i'm away when a message arrives...i don't know i've got it because it isn't flashing.
Y U not use the search engine?
There are multiple threads about this 'problem' and the only useful advise is always: https://market.android.com/details?...29uc3VsdGluZy5hbmRyb2lkLmxpZ2h0Zmxvd2xpdGUiXQ..
Y U not read?
I'm not bothered about colours or customising the LED, i'm quite happy with the white flash, i'm also well aware of lightflow and there's reasons why i wont use it.
the problem is the sheer randomness of the standard notification LED randomly deciding to flash or not flash based on...absolutely nothing

I have had several phones with notification LED and this one is the only one that doesn't work correctly. Hopefullly the boneheads in the LED department over at Google can fix this. By the time they do, we will probably be able to choose from several ICS phones.
On a $700 phone, why do you need to download a 3rd party app to make one of the phones features work ?

This $700 phone has more problems than the $500 Galaxy S2 it seems. ICS is good, but hardware problems are starting to outweigh the benefits in my opinion. We need to keep downloading apps to manage these little things like the notification light, battery usage, volume problems (which the apps around still cause friction with ICS) etc.
This is my first Nexus and when I went into Vodaphone the other day the man at the store admired my phone. Then proceeded to tell me Nexus have always had little problems surrounding the hardware and software of the phones, the quality control isn't as good as the Galaxy S range. I'm starting to get that feeling too.
Well considering the galaxy s and s2 had their share of problems and the last two nexus are Samsung phones I find that trivial. I'm not having a lot of the problems people are having and my battery life is great, especially considering 4.65" amoled screen. Maybe apples don't fall far from the tree.

so has nobody at all had the weird dimming screen thing?

[Q] Q: Controlling the LED with PhoneAlarm or Lightflow or some other app

I've used PhoneAlarm from PocketMax since 2007 and LightFlow for years as well, and was always able to get one or the other to control the LED on whatever phone I was using. But I have messed around with both apps on my new HTC One M8, and can't get either one to function properly.
I think I've really only seen the phone's LED generate two colors--green and amber. Is it possible those are the only two colors it is capable of? I find that hard to believe.
I see warnings and special modes and things in the LightFlow configuration options for HTC phones, indicating that HTC phones are different, but nothing I try gets me any other colors.
I'd settle for being able to have just a few different colors for missed calls, missed texts,, etc.
Anyone know of a way to get either of the apps above controlling the LEDs, or have a different app that --IS-- working to control the LEDs with this phone?
Thanks!

Not sure if you're talking about front LED's or rear flash LED's but I have FlashMe working on my M8.

Thanks. I was talking about just the main, front LED. I'll have to check out FlashMe. Thanks for the tip!
Edit: So after taking a look at FlashMe, it appears that app does, in fact, just control the camera's flash. I'm trying to use the phone's main LED to see the status of things. So, for example, if I've been away from my phone, or if it is on silent, and I have a missed call, I might see the light blinking red, and similarly it might blink purple for an unread text message.
I'm trying to figure this out as well. Have you found any app that works so far, Andyw2100? Or are we just stuck with green and Amber?

I posted in another thread that I have LightFlow working, I'm pretty sure I included the details of my configuration, which differed slightly from someone else's who also said it was working for him.
Light Flow, when running the LED test, can actually generate three colors - green, amber, and red--but the notification options can't make use of the red. So for now it's still limited to two.
Also, since posting, I've discovered that from time to time, probably due to the bug that others mentioned, the LED will just stop working completely. The "fix" I have found is to uninstall and reinstall Light Flow. As long as the settings are backed up, this isn't that big a deal, but it's not a great situation, of course.
I've written to the Light Flow developer, but apparently he is away on vacation for a while. I'll write again when he returns.

Anyone know how to get the notification LED to do anything useful?

I'd like for it to flash continuously when I have a missed message, call, VM, Whatsapp, anything-I-want.
Just like you can do with the *insert any other phone ever made here*.
It will flash for the moment I get a call or text but never any other time.
I have it turned on to do so in Settings. There's a secondary option to allow it for 3rd party apps or something like that, I get nothing for Whatsapp either.
I see plenty of threads on this but people only suggest 3rd party apps and rooting their phones.

Its the only way. Lightflow pro will let you put whatever color you want for whatever notification.

That's ridiculous. I don't see how manufacturers keep overlooking something so simple as a notification LED. It is not the first phone I have had this issue with. It is really helpful to look at my phone when the screen is off and know if I missed a call, email or text depending on the color. Spend so much time and money into doing other useless tasks, but simple ones often get overlooked. I'm not looking to root the phone just for an LED.
It does flash, just very infrequently. I do find the LED pretty much useless. My Note 2's indicator was very large and easy to see from a distance and from weird angles if the phone is sitting somewhere. Imo this one is hard to notice unless you're holding the phone and looking directly at it.

I did get it to flash with handcent with a custom color and blink rate. Still cant get it to work with gmail, but havent tried lightflow yet. Agreed though, you can barely see it unless you are looking head on. Oh well...

Question horizon light op9 pro

I have tried everything in terms of manipulating the settings, but I cannot get horizon light to work at all, am I the only one with this issue, and does anyone know what needs to be done in order for it to function that isn't obvious?

No issues here. The colored bars show up when the screen is off and a notification comes in. I do have always on display, well, always on....not sure if that matters or not.
Mine doesn't seem to work either on the NA phone. And I can't even tell, are they supposed to light up just once or do they act more like the old notification LEDs?

yeah I tried that but to no avail, is it lighting up with any app or only certain ones? for example, I use fairemail for email and threema/signal for messaging, and it does not light up for any. moreover, it doesn't light up for anything at all, very frustrating.
I've noticed it for notifications from the stock messaging app and Gmail, but haven't seen anything else trigger it yet.
It's not that bright and only does it once so if you blink you will miss it!
I tested it with a calendar notification, not sure what else it works on. Don't remember seeing it for WhatsApp
Eta: it does work on most things, just miss it unless you are looking for it.

Im not entirely sure how well this works, but I have messed around with this app previous. I used an app on the playstore called AOA by newGen Mobile, its not quite an ambient display but it is an Always on Display app that enables you to customize your horizon lights as you see fit(color, duration, pattern and such). There is a free version of it if you want to at least try it out.
Mine works fine, but i'm on Color OS c36.
Too bad that is only 3 colors : blue, red, gold.
