Couple of oddities... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Couple of things i've noticed....
First, does the notification LED have a mind completely of its own?? I get a voicemail...and the light flashes...then 2 minutes later get another voicemail and nothing.
Got an SMS, nothing showed...got another, nothing showed, just got one now and it starts flashing at me.
Secondly, when i've received an SMS, i've gone into messaging app...and the screen dimmed and came back again quickly, so i clicked on settings and it dimmed completely like an LCD with no backlight, exit settings and it comes back again, go back into settings and it goes etc etc. Lock screen, unlock and it works fine...bit weird.
The most annoying one is definitely the useless notication LED because...if i'm sat at my desk listening to music rather loud and i cant hear a notification because of the quiet speaker, or i'm away when a message arrives...i don't know i've got it because it isn't flashing.

Y U not use the search engine?
There are multiple threads about this 'problem' and the only useful advise is always: https://market.android.com/details?...29uc3VsdGluZy5hbmRyb2lkLmxpZ2h0Zmxvd2xpdGUiXQ..

Y U not read?
I'm not bothered about colours or customising the LED, i'm quite happy with the white flash, i'm also well aware of lightflow and there's reasons why i wont use it.
the problem is the sheer randomness of the standard notification LED randomly deciding to flash or not flash based on...absolutely nothing

I have had several phones with notification LED and this one is the only one that doesn't work correctly. Hopefullly the boneheads in the LED department over at Google can fix this. By the time they do, we will probably be able to choose from several ICS phones.
On a $700 phone, why do you need to download a 3rd party app to make one of the phones features work ?

This $700 phone has more problems than the $500 Galaxy S2 it seems. ICS is good, but hardware problems are starting to outweigh the benefits in my opinion. We need to keep downloading apps to manage these little things like the notification light, battery usage, volume problems (which the apps around still cause friction with ICS) etc.
This is my first Nexus and when I went into Vodaphone the other day the man at the store admired my phone. Then proceeded to tell me Nexus have always had little problems surrounding the hardware and software of the phones, the quality control isn't as good as the Galaxy S range. I'm starting to get that feeling too.

Well considering the galaxy s and s2 had their share of problems and the last two nexus are Samsung phones I find that trivial. I'm not having a lot of the problems people are having and my battery life is great, especially considering 4.65" amoled screen. Maybe apples don't fall far from the tree.

LED Notification flash - Not working?

I haven't fully tested this issue yet mainly because I've only had the phone for a few days... I wanted to check if anyone else had this problem.
Under Settings -> Sound & Display -> Notification Flash
I have all the options ticked.
In theory, whenever I have a missed call or a SMS or email etc, I should be able to tell that I need to check my phone be a little blinking light in the top right corner off the screen. I just came back to my phone and this LED wasn't blinking but when I turned on the phone, there was a missed call and a SMS.
Other times, it seemed to work fine.
Anyone else noticed this problem?
it only flashes for 5 mins and then stops. There is no way to change this without additional apps.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Oh... How disappointing. Pretty useless imo. Thanks for the info. I wonder if they will fix it. My previous phone, Touch Diamond, had something similar but it never stopped flashing until you looked at your missed calls.
Now that explains things. I tend to look for the led after I've not used the phone for a while. In my pocket or elsewhere. Quite a few times I've seen no flashing but have a notification in the top left. I thought it was another one of those little 'features' we keep finding.
Yeh i discovered this awhile back and it's annoying as hell, i just use a app called Missed Reminder which can be configured to allowed it to keep flashing indefinitely
I was just going to make a post about this. I thought the LED notification wasn't working at all on my Desire, since I've never seen it, but perhaps it had just stopped before I had the chance to catch it, then

What apps are you referring to? It would be nice to be able to have the LED flash longer.
I'm guessing this is to save battery time, I don't know how much power a small LED uses but it surely can't help with the already abysmal battery life
I first thought the LED was located behind the optical trackpad, because the trackball on my Hero could light up. I think the LED-notification is pretty dumb since it's almost invisible when it lights up. The lighting trackball was much much better
This is a known issue. I thought that did not happen in Android, but I guess I was wrong.
If the phone work in Windows Mobile, there are a registry key to let assign values to the options, so they are usable.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4846399#post4846399
In Android, I have no clue... maybe my info help in any way.
PMoto
It would be nice to be able to change the flash time from the default 5 minutes, or atleast an option for no time limit.
I know it's to help save battery life, but I'm willing to say that the light flashing will use less battery then the back light coming on everytime I'm away from my phone for more then 5 minutes, from me checking to see if I have new messages, email, or missed phone calls.
Same issue with my recently purchased A40.
No blinking at all despite screen flash notification selected.
Hope someone can help

Xperia Play: Photo LED flickering/pulsating... normal?

Hi,
I've downloaded the Widget "Xperia Arc Flashlight" so I can use the Xperia Play photolight on the backside as a very bright flashlight.
But: The LED does light constantly with some kind of visible short pulse... like a slight flicker or interruption. Is this normal?
Could you check if your phones behave like this, too? It's slightly visible but it IS visible and I want to know if there's s.th. wrong.
Thanks

Oha... thanks for your reply.
The Xperia Play is new and about 20min "old" ;-)
defective or not!?
Just as system02 said. It must be that kind of thing like the gap from the slider, although it shouldn't do like that.
Every single phone that has an LED flash does the same thing when used as a flashlight. It's completely normal.
It's not normal because:
- my 1st Play didn't have this issue
- my Arc didn't have this issue
- my Blackberry 9700 doesn't have this issue
I've updatet the software on my new Xperia Play and I thought it could have s.th. to do with the update...!?

None of my phones in the past flickered at all, my Play does it all the time, I think its a design issue somewhere.
mine used to do that but I used toggle auto brightness app from the market and it no longer does it.
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
My old Legend used to blink it's LED from time to time, but no where near as noticeable as the Play's LED. Not exactly an issue for me though.
mine flickers when using video camera with lights on and when using Power Control Plus to turn on Flashlight. Nevertheless, it's very useful when the power goes out especially now it's kinda stormy here..
looking at the frequency of the issue, i think it's very normal..
PS, mine's bought in Hong Kong then flashed to UK, same issue eversince..
Not sure if they're linked but mine's been fine since i disabled the auto light sensor but before i disabled it, the led did flicker quite badly

Mine does the exact same thing, when using video recorder in the dark its like ive hit the strobe light button.. its ok for about 4-5secs then its like ive walked into cream in ibiza, it goes nuts.. ive had lots of xperia phones,, x10i x10 mini, x10 mini pro, etc none had the issue, i had it on the original firmware and now i have it on the 2.3.4 rom posted on this forum..
Its a strange one and kinda annoying
Sorry to bring this thread back, but the pulsating/flicker, I've seen on 3 Play's, from 2.3.2 - 2.3.3 - 2.3.4.
All 3 did it on all 3 software updates.
Uk phones, with the 2.3.2/2.3.3 uk updates, and then the Nordic update.
It's pulsating/flickering 50 times a minute, so 50hz(is that right?), increasing it's rate would effectively make it palatable to the human eye, and also remove the refresh lines you get from bright or close up subjects when using the flash as a light, seen on the recording screen, and on the actual recording...looking like old monitor refresh rates as seen through a camera with the travelling black lines.
Sony Ericsson support were useless when I mentioned it to them, stating if it was a fault, it would be fixed.
Is there any way to report this as a fault, or to fix it, or am I stuck with Customer Service Support Agents(call centre staff, basically.).
Is there any way or even a strobe app, that allows control of the light.
I know there's one on the windows phone that has a control for this issue.
LED Flashlight it's called, and the update fixes "Increased refresh rate to fix LED flickering on some phones."
Hi, I've the same problem. I also noticed that Led flick only when phone has mobile network turned on. When is on airplane mode it's normal.
Can someone else confirm? Maybe this problem can be solved with a baseband update.
EDIT: I found that this problem disappear when phone run in 3g, so it's about gsm.
Strange.. when I first bought the phone.. turned the LED on, it flickers..
Then today, after a week+ I tested it again and it's ok...
However, my earpiece speaker has blown up and cracking.. I've done some research and it seemed that there are so many users which have similar issues (either with the LED, the earpiece, etc) - It's sad to say that some xplay builds are defective from the start - could be from the hardware batch.

Can you repeat the test in 2g?
Btw I checked the call quality: in 3g I heard nothing in background, in 2g I heard a intermittent buzzing.
Maybe in 2g that isn't a problem in the sense that it's common in every phone that make a 2g call, or it may be a radio problem that can be related to led issue..
I think that tomorrow I'll try to call someone at sony ericsson.
I did the test and it is true, in flight mode the light dont flik. Now i want to know what is the base band of you that have the same issue.
Thanks.
Mine did that on AT&T's 2.3.3, Now on DarkForest ICS with Darkforest Kernel, doesnt do it.
Mine always flickers, using two different flashlight apps.

Strange dimming bug...

I've been having a a bit of a strange bug with my GN...
When i unlock and open for instance messaging app to look at SMS's...i see the screen dim a lot and come back again. If i open up settings screen dims like an LCD panel with no backlight. If i click back, screen comes back again or if i lock and unlock screen, all is OK.
I've done some fiddling about and it only seems to happen on apps with white backgrounds i.e. messaging, gtalk, gmail etc. If i open dark background apps i.e. phone app, settings or gallery it doesnt happen.
But for all those other apps when i launch them, screen appears to flicker (dim) and come back again...messaging is the only one where it dims completely in settings.
Has anybody else noticed this?
And more wierdness...in the messaging settings menu, if i scroll to the bottom the brightness goes completely and then comes back again, and starts flickering a lot...
maybe i'll try turning off auto brightness and see if it still does it...
I've had a couple of customers come in already saying they always felt like the brightness was on notch to low sometimes or just very dim. Considered it user error, just got my nexus in the mail and after set up brightness just dropped randomly to almost nothing...
soooo guess we'll see
ah well still did it with auto brightness off
wonder if i've got a borked phone or if others do it and they just dont notice...
EDIT: if anybody's interested in seeing it i've just uploaded a vid here
And i know i still have the front screen cover on...havent wanted to take it off yet!
Restored stone to factory settings this morning and i've not installed anything else or changed any settings (other than turning off NFC, wifi and mobile data)...and it still does it.
Think i might have a defective handset then...annoying though, it's only 2 weeks old but the place i got it from states
Phones that are faulty out-of-box as determined by our warehouse can also be returned for an extended period of up to 7 days from date of delivery.

So if i can't get a replacement out of them, what are the odds of samsung replacing it for a new handset?
Hmm pretty sure it's hardware, set desktop picture to something quite bright/white and sure enough when i was scrolling through the 5 homescreens brightness was flickering from one to the next...
What are the odds of getting a replacement handset after 2 weeks? :|

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Mine is already running yakju from new :/ I might try re-flashing it tonight though just for the hell of it.
Is this not a bit weird that it happens only on bright/wight screens/backgrounds/apps? And that it's suddenly fine when you lock the screen...
If it was a laptop i'd be fitting a new panel to it but then i dont know what amoled's are like (especially combined with a light sensor)
Nope, still does it after a re-flash :/
Got a replacement handset now...
Like my first one, it was one of the early opened and re-sealed with samsung label handsets (and they hadnt put the battery door on properly, fingerprint on the SIM card slot!)
But anyways, waiting for the OTA update on this one
It's obviously running ITL41D and no OTA has come through yet whereas on my first handset it came through pretty much straight away.
Would the fact i've already had the OTA on one handset stop this coming through? :|

Is 14.3.A.0.757 as bug-free and stable as .114?

I’m usually the first to hit the Update button on anything I own, but after reading about all the bugs that Sony introduced with the firmware updates following .114, I chose not to update mine. I’ve been stuck with a permanent notification in my Notification Shade informing me of the update ever since but that is a small price to pay for a relatively bug-free phone.
Now that .757 is released, is it safe to take the plunge? I am in no particular hurry because I cannot think on anything in KitKat that I particularly want and I know that Sony hasn’t fixed my major issues with the phone anyway. I know the camera isn’t any better in low light, the proximity sensor lag remains and the fast dormancy “feature” that drains up to 40% of the phone’s battery every day is still there.
But if it is as stable as .114, I’d like to be on the latest and greatest again. Your opinion is welcome. Thank you.
Android 4.4 has a general bug with the sound (google problem) but apart from that I can't find anything wrong. Battery seems great. In fact I like it better than the 4.3 rom.

Oh yes, I was nothing but shocked when I installed KK - I'm mean is this an open source droid or a locked down fruit phone?
Not to forget to mention that email+exchange permissions is changed (for my company mail which uses ms exchange servers).
PIN requirement is not enough on KK, only password with atleast 4 letters, 2 numbers and 3 signs
Takes a week to unlock your phone unless you root and install an old hacked version of email+exchange.apk+the risk of getting sacked (if they would find out).
Only thing I miss from KK is the Stamina icon but the GEL Xperia Xposed dev is looking into porting it :good:

Why do you think it is better than Sony’s Camera app? It does not remove the low light issue (where the camera bumps up the ISO much more than it strictly needs to and makes the photos a grainy, unusable mess) and it does not have a manual mode, so you can tackle it yourself. While I like the sparse interface, I have to stick with Sony’s app, because this phone’s camera is useless without manual mode in low light.
Also, on an unrelated note, can any one of you help me get the Personalised Recognition feature back in Google Now? I used to have it in the settings menu but don’t anymore. It disappeared while I was on .114 and I was hoping that updating to .757 would bring it back, but it hasn’t. Do you guys have it?
Sorry to keep bumping my own thread, but this message is just to help out other users who are thinking of installing this update. My recommendation is: go for it!
I had a long list of annoyances with this phone, but I updated to .757 yesterday and it has fixed almost all the issues I had on .114. The major issues that have been addressed:
The Fast Dormancy bug seems to be gone. That Android process that was eating up 40% of my battery life every day no longer shows up on the battery usage screen.
The proximity sensor delay is gone. You bring the phone away from your ear and the display turns on instantly. Magic!
So far, I have no experienced the keyboard skipping issue, so I hope that is taken care of as well.
The only major issue that remains is that the camera is still terrible in low light, thanks to the software that bumps up the ISO needlessly to insane levels. But I can live with that.
I no longer regret buying this thing.

I know it's not really a solution, but keep your cam in manual mode and alter the ISO manually. Every phone I've ever used with a camera (iPhones are particularly bad offenders) ALWAYS overcompensate on the ISO in every single environment other than outside on a bright day.
You'll get spectacular improvements if you just get into the habit of entering manual mode, and altering the ISO to the lowest you can get away with (while keeping all the other options on auto) each time you're taking a photo. As far as Im concerned it's far better that way and produces better results than either superior auto or the iPhone's one-button-capture simplicity.
Thanks. I already do that but the default camera app does not make it easy to change the ISO. It takes at least five taps from within the main camera interface to change the ISO and come back. Often, by the time you are done experimenting with the ISO settings, the subject has moved on. Or you end up with a reasonably well lit but blurry shot because the camera UI makes no attempt to inform you of the shutter speed when you take the shot. I have no found any camera apps on the Play Store that make up for these deficiencies either.

Good thing for me that went from .114 directly to .757 (i am rooted also)
Camera app have now a 15Meg option
Transparency
Bad things
Conversations.apk (the SMS/MMS app from Sony) is full of bugs. And when I mean full, I really mean it.
Sometimes messages that i already read in the conversations, disappears. All I would see is the blue bubble showing that there's a message, but without the text of the messages. So far this seems to only affect SMS, not MMS.
The color of the bubble when you type, let say blue, and the color of the bubble of the other person talking to you, let say faded blue, often get switch, so reading a conversation might become difficult.
To get the difficulty level higher in following your conversation, sometimes even the side of the screen your bubble is supposed to be attached switch. I mean here, that when you type, your message is next to right side, and your friends reply is next to left side. But now, sometimes you switch side all of a sudden, or worst, sometimes you're on the same side then your interlocutor. Reading SMS with the conversation.apk is totally hardcore now.
Another thing that really piss be off, but I do not know if this is from 757 or if it was already in 114, since I did not use this app in 114, it is the Email software. The Email software stacks/bundles all the messages with the same subjet title when someone reply or transfer your email. (like Gmail does in a browser by default). I really hate this functionality, I prefer to just scroll down to see the previous message if I need to. Unfortunately for me, there's no option in the app to unstack/ungroup emails messages.
Another problem I have with the Email app, this is a bug, because it wasn't doing this in previous build, it is that the Small yellow icon on the icon that tells you that there's 1,2,3 what ever number unread messages, and also the Mail icon in the notification bar, does not go away upon opening the email message. You need to actually press the back button to exit the new messages for it to be marked as read, so that the icon and the notification bar adjust. So if you open an email messages, press the home button to do whatever else, then look back at your notification bar or email icon, you'll think you got new email message, but in fact, it's the same one that is still marked as unread, even if you did open it and read it...
Email and SMS/MMS apps are what I use the most on my phone, I've been using them since I got my first Xperia X10 Mini Pro that was running 1.6, but I've never had that much trouble, they have so many annoying bugs right now. The only problem I've had was the notification LED bug on my Xperia Mini Pro running ICS.
Another thing that I hate, but this is not from 757, but from JellyBean. I come from ICS, and what I hate the most, is the damn white background of all apps. It use more battery and it hurts my eyes in low light room even with minimum brightness. I just wish a stable CyanogenMod with black background pops like in ICS so that I can install it. I've seen some topic about it over here, but they only explain how to uncompile and recompile, too much complicated, I'd rather simply have a package I could simply install with CWM.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention another bug. Somehow the auto-rotate of the screen stopped working twice in the last 2 weeks. Each time I need to go in the accessibility options and uncheck/recheck the auto-rotate option to fix this. (grrr need to wait 5 minutes to be able to edit my msg #xdaforumantispam)
This phone has an LED-backlit LCD display. It does not affect the phone's battery life whether the screen is white or black. Not enough to make a practical difference, in any case.

Anyone know how to get the notification LED to do anything useful?

I'd like for it to flash continuously when I have a missed message, call, VM, Whatsapp, anything-I-want.
Just like you can do with the *insert any other phone ever made here*.
It will flash for the moment I get a call or text but never any other time.
I have it turned on to do so in Settings. There's a secondary option to allow it for 3rd party apps or something like that, I get nothing for Whatsapp either.
I see plenty of threads on this but people only suggest 3rd party apps and rooting their phones.

That's ridiculous. I don't see how manufacturers keep overlooking something so simple as a notification LED. It is not the first phone I have had this issue with. It is really helpful to look at my phone when the screen is off and know if I missed a call, email or text depending on the color. Spend so much time and money into doing other useless tasks, but simple ones often get overlooked. I'm not looking to root the phone just for an LED.
It does flash, just very infrequently. I do find the LED pretty much useless. My Note 2's indicator was very large and easy to see from a distance and from weird angles if the phone is sitting somewhere. Imo this one is hard to notice unless you're holding the phone and looking directly at it.
