LED Notification flash - Not working? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't fully tested this issue yet mainly because I've only had the phone for a few days... I wanted to check if anyone else had this problem.
Under Settings -> Sound & Display -> Notification Flash
I have all the options ticked.
In theory, whenever I have a missed call or a SMS or email etc, I should be able to tell that I need to check my phone be a little blinking light in the top right corner off the screen. I just came back to my phone and this LED wasn't blinking but when I turned on the phone, there was a missed call and a SMS.
Other times, it seemed to work fine.
Anyone else noticed this problem?

it only flashes for 5 mins and then stops. There is no way to change this without additional apps.

Oh... How disappointing. Pretty useless imo. Thanks for the info. I wonder if they will fix it. My previous phone, Touch Diamond, had something similar but it never stopped flashing until you looked at your missed calls.

Now that explains things. I tend to look for the led after I've not used the phone for a while. In my pocket or elsewhere. Quite a few times I've seen no flashing but have a notification in the top left. I thought it was another one of those little 'features' we keep finding.

Yeh i discovered this awhile back and it's annoying as hell, i just use a app called Missed Reminder which can be configured to allowed it to keep flashing indefinitely

I was just going to make a post about this. I thought the LED notification wasn't working at all on my Desire, since I've never seen it, but perhaps it had just stopped before I had the chance to catch it, then

What apps are you referring to? It would be nice to be able to have the LED flash longer.

I'm guessing this is to save battery time, I don't know how much power a small LED uses but it surely can't help with the already abysmal battery life

I first thought the LED was located behind the optical trackpad, because the trackball on my Hero could light up. I think the LED-notification is pretty dumb since it's almost invisible when it lights up. The lighting trackball was much much better

This is a known issue. I thought that did not happen in Android, but I guess I was wrong.
If the phone work in Windows Mobile, there are a registry key to let assign values to the options, so they are usable.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4846399#post4846399
In Android, I have no clue... maybe my info help in any way.
PMoto

It would be nice to be able to change the flash time from the default 5 minutes, or atleast an option for no time limit.
I know it's to help save battery life, but I'm willing to say that the light flashing will use less battery then the back light coming on everytime I'm away from my phone for more then 5 minutes, from me checking to see if I have new messages, email, or missed phone calls.

Same issue with my recently purchased A40.
No blinking at all despite screen flash notification selected.
Hope someone can help

SMS LED Notification

Hey, i was just wonder if this is normal or not but about 5 minutes after receiving a SMS the LED will stop flashing even though i have not turned the screen on yet to check it
is this meant to happen and if so is there a way in which i can change it to continue flashing any amount of time until i check my phone?
Thanks.
I think with the Handcent SMS app you can set 'reminders' to every 5 mins. So it should continually flash till you check it then.
I've not actually tried this but the theory is there!
thanks for the quick reply, but i was hoping there was a way with the default messaging program
Annoyingly, I don't think there is. I'd recommend having a look at Handcent though, it's a cool app.
that's rather annoying, but o well i guess, other then this I've been loving the phone
Try Missed Reminder from the market. Works good on my device.
I asked HTC about this, and it is is true, the LED flashes for 5mins then stops.
I didn't like the Handcent reminder simply because when it restarts the notification, it makes the sound like it's got another message. I just wanted to know I've got something to check rather than hear it go off every 5mins or whatever you set it to.
But this is a personal annoyance. I can see that many wouldn't mind this.
Missed Reminder was another option to definitely try to see if it's for you.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll give Missed Reminder ago, seems odd that they wouldn't allow for a option to let it flash for longer, is this only for SMS or does it also stop after 5 mins for all LED notifications?
all notifications stop after 5mins. What's the point in having the led?

Yeah..5mins for sms/missed call...constantly if your battery is low
Are you guys sure that the LED stops blinking after 5 mins? In hTC's there is an option in settings (I forgot where exactly) which will allow you to set different times, 5,10,15 mins and even there is an option for continuous blinking. So please recheck the settings (in sound & notifications maybe) and then confirm it.
Thanks.

That is so weird. Isn't there any solution for this?
The Missed Reminder app does the job. You can customise it quite a bit. I just set all notifications to blink the LED forever.

Tried this app, but doesnt work correctly. Sure it will continue to blink the LED, but the notification sounds do not work correctly - i.e they dont sound on reapeat alarms. Shame as it looked a nice app.
Message from developer
I have no plans yet to release a special version for 2.x at least not until I’ve got my phone updated to 2.1.

LED notification is not blinking correctly and works sporadically

Ive tried several roms and all seem to do the same thing. It may have even done it on the stock rom but I dont remember.
My LED notification when I get txts or emails is not blinking correctly. It will blink very irregularly for the first 15 seconds and then sometimes wont blink at all after that. Ive tried custom apps like go sms and an app that forces the light to come on at fixed intervals but it still wont work right, like something is conflicting with the light coming on.
Has anyone else experienced this or know a fix?

Im on the latest Frankenstein rom, but Ive tried the latest Bonsai one before this and it did it as well.
Theres others experiencing this as well but I havent found any fixes for it yet, even the apps they recommend dont work for me.

Try Missed Reminder
My configuration:
Start/Stop Service (Check)
Autostart (Check)
Everything else disabled.
Preferences settings for Missed SMS/MMS/Missed Calls/Missed Gmails
Turn the screen on (Unchecked)
Popup (Unchecked)
Vibrate (Unchecked)
Ringtone (Silent)
Blink Led (Unchecked)
Notification Intervals (1s)
Number of repeats (Forever)
I found that by using these settings, it forces the device to keep the LED blinking. I also found that you can then use apps with custom LED settings like Go SMS to change the color and LED blink rate with no problems.
Its always done this. Maybe one day we can get a fix. Sometimes mine works just fine and other times it is very sporadic.

Same here. Always done this from day one. I had a brand new Epic, played around with it, and the LED crap never worked. On that particular phone, the PRL would never update so I took the phone back and got another one. PRL worked fine, and the LED on that phone did the same thing.
I also have the LED to set to keep blinking in Chomp SMS, and it does not work. I have ALWAYS gotten the sporadic LED blinks when I get a message, and then it disappears.
This has happened on the STOCK phone out of the box, as well as with DK28 and Bonsai 2.0.1.
So regardless of the ROM you use, you're still going to be out of luck. Until Samsung can get this fixed...hopefully in the new Froyo build coming out next week, then you are stuck, just like many other people are.
I have not tried that program that was posted by Isira, but you may give it a try and see if that fixes your problem. I tried a program similar way in the beginning and it didn't work.
It's worth a shot though. But Samsung knows its a problem, and that's all there is to it. You're stuck with it, just like me.
UPDATE I just tried the program and so far it seems to work. My SMS is still blinking. Not quite a true second like it is set, but it is blinking. I'll keep testing it, but you may give it a try.
I did try the missed reminder app and messed around with the settings but it still blinked sporadically. On a side note I used the samsung tool to update to EB13 and stock 2.2 and the blinking seems back to normal...

Galaxy Nexus notification light with light flow

I am really really happy that the galaxy nexus has a notification light. That was the thing preventing me from moving on from my nexus one.
Of course I wish Google would make the notification light more customizable because as it stands its really worthless by default.
I'm using light flow to help but its not perfect. Maybe its just not ready for ics yet or I'm doing something wrong but these r the problems I'm encountering:
In Google talk when I type a message and the screen goes off, the notification light comes on as if the person has responded but its being triggered by my own message. The only way I've been able to help with this is to hit menu>end chat after typing my message.
The other issue is with Google voice. I don't see a notification light up for it. Do any of you know if the paid version of the app will do it for Google voice?
Thirdly it doesn't seem to stop the sounds from the notifications in the night time mode...it turns off the light, but even though in that option I have it set to do the sound as well, it doesn't do it. I had to go into the sound settings and just turn off the notification sound (which actually didn't help, I had to go into each apps settings and turn it off there).

Personally, I have the paid app and it has been hit and miss for me on ICS... sometimes I can't get the light to go away unless I FC the app. I uninstalled it for now until the niggles get smoothed out.

I was having same problems - light won`t stop flashing even after I checked received sms or missed phone call. Had to uninstall app But once its fixed, I will be first to install it - fantastic!
Anyone else know if there's any other app that can configure the lights?
I've bought a few over the years for my other devices but haven't tried any for Galaxy Nexus yet.
I've noticed though in Google Voice, when I get a text, the light is green.
I used light flow for a bit. but killed at after a day or so. Its still a little buggy in ICS as others have said
i had the proble with the light not turning off too. I had to turn off the notification light for no signal and low battery, and its been perfect since then.
I guess knock on wood, but I have never had a problem with the light staying on with Lightflow paid version.. I feel like if you swipe to dismiss a text message, it will stay on, but if you just open the Messaging app, it will stop blinking. Also, if you use the "x" on the notifications window, it will stop blinking without opening Messaging.
Edit:
With regards to the above post, I have never had the "no signal" light on, but I do have "low battery" and it works fine.
Strange, my problem is actually the opposite to you guys. With light flow my notifications clear just fine, every time. However, it seems like about half the time it refuses to notify me at all. Drains a bit of battery too.

I'm working on improvements for ICS. There's a few things I'm working on for a release in the next few days.
Firstly, at the moment gtalk just doesn't work correctly for identifying notifications due to changes in the gtalk app. I've pretty much rewritten the notification detection for gtalk now and it seems to be working fine in the test builds.
There's a bug I've fixed where for some people the app won't work after a reboot.
As for swiping away notificatons, that won't clear them. It's really frustrating that the accessibility service is so limited in this regard and won't report anything useful back on what's happened. Because of this, I'm adding a new option to clear notifications additionally when you pull down the notification bar as this is something I've managed to hook into. Therefore it'll clear when you either open the app, or pull the notification bar down (but will then be off even if you don't actually view the notification)
I've had a few crash reports (thanks to those who send them in) that I've been trying to fix also, but some of these can take a few iterations to completely stop.
As for battery use, after the next market release adding the above, I'm going to try and add a new feature to just display the most recent notification that's come in. Although it wouldn't be my personal choice, it'll use less battery than the notifications where it's changing in succession around all the notification colors.
---------- Post added at 01:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:12 PM ----------
As for the sounds not stopping, have you set the native app to "silent" for it's notifications. Just want to see if it could actually be the main app that's triggering the sound.
---------- Post added at 01:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:14 PM ----------
The paid version of the app also supports google voice.
I'm having a really bad issue where once the screen is off, I can't get it to turn back on. The only way to get it on is to reboot the phone via ADB. Then, once I turn it off, it stays off again. If I press the power button SOMETIMES it will flash my lock screen for a 10th of a second, but then turn back on. This started when I installed the app. I was able to test the LED colors, and it did that during the test, too. Hopefully it's an easy fix!

i got this problem too, turn off foreground, uninstall, install, turn off foreground, turn on. You should be good to go then. App is a bit buggy, but better than what google is currently offering us.
No dice
The good news though is that I can get my phone to work again by entering an ADB shell, entering "su", running a "ps" to list the running processes, then running "kill (proc number here)" to end the process, allowing me to turn my screen back on.
EDIT: Ok, so after killing the process using the method listed above, I re-entered the app, turned the "run in foreground" off, then turned it back on, then rebooted. Phone seems to be ok now.

You can also pull the battery if you want. There are several of us that have had this issue with light flow. The developer has stated that he is working on a fix. I would suggest removing the app until there is a confirmed solution.

Yea, battery pull works too, but considering how finicky the battery cover of the GN is, plus the case i have, it's easier to adb reboot or kill the process.
See my above edit, though. I seem to have gotten it to work.

Couple of oddities...

Couple of things i've noticed....
First, does the notification LED have a mind completely of its own?? I get a voicemail...and the light flashes...then 2 minutes later get another voicemail and nothing.
Got an SMS, nothing showed...got another, nothing showed, just got one now and it starts flashing at me.
Secondly, when i've received an SMS, i've gone into messaging app...and the screen dimmed and came back again quickly, so i clicked on settings and it dimmed completely like an LCD with no backlight, exit settings and it comes back again, go back into settings and it goes etc etc. Lock screen, unlock and it works fine...bit weird.
The most annoying one is definitely the useless notication LED because...if i'm sat at my desk listening to music rather loud and i cant hear a notification because of the quiet speaker, or i'm away when a message arrives...i don't know i've got it because it isn't flashing.
Y U not use the search engine?
There are multiple threads about this 'problem' and the only useful advise is always: https://market.android.com/details?...29uc3VsdGluZy5hbmRyb2lkLmxpZ2h0Zmxvd2xpdGUiXQ..
Y U not read?
I'm not bothered about colours or customising the LED, i'm quite happy with the white flash, i'm also well aware of lightflow and there's reasons why i wont use it.
the problem is the sheer randomness of the standard notification LED randomly deciding to flash or not flash based on...absolutely nothing

I have had several phones with notification LED and this one is the only one that doesn't work correctly. Hopefullly the boneheads in the LED department over at Google can fix this. By the time they do, we will probably be able to choose from several ICS phones.
On a $700 phone, why do you need to download a 3rd party app to make one of the phones features work ?

This $700 phone has more problems than the $500 Galaxy S2 it seems. ICS is good, but hardware problems are starting to outweigh the benefits in my opinion. We need to keep downloading apps to manage these little things like the notification light, battery usage, volume problems (which the apps around still cause friction with ICS) etc.
This is my first Nexus and when I went into Vodaphone the other day the man at the store admired my phone. Then proceeded to tell me Nexus have always had little problems surrounding the hardware and software of the phones, the quality control isn't as good as the Galaxy S range. I'm starting to get that feeling too.
Well considering the galaxy s and s2 had their share of problems and the last two nexus are Samsung phones I find that trivial. I'm not having a lot of the problems people are having and my battery life is great, especially considering 4.65" amoled screen. Maybe apples don't fall far from the tree.

Notification LED not working properly

My notification LED is not working right. It gives charging indications fine, but when the phone is asleep it doesn't alert me to emails, texts, missed calls, etc. Doesn't seem to work at all.
Notification Flash is enabled across the board in Display & Gestures, and I don't know where else I would enable it. I don't want to use Light Flow after reading here that it doesn't work. Anyone else have any suggestions?
It's a Virgin Mobie One V in the USA.
Indicator light only works for 5 minutes for missed calls/texts so perhaps that's why you're seeing it as 'not working'?
Yeah that would probably explain it. Any way to change it? 5 minutes doesn't do me much good.
Not a dealbreaker but a bummer if that's just the way it is.

Yeah it only works for 5 mins, and it's due to the stock kernel. It's probably to save battery, so yeah..

okay... the five min timeout irked me too, but if you have go sms pro there is a workaround... well, at least for texts.
advanced settings ->notification settings ->default notification settings
near the bottom you can enable reminders. when I tested, the reminder triggered the LED as well as vibrate, or tone... and you can choose to have the screen light up again or not.
hope that helps!
