Microsoft hates hidden SSID - Windows Phone 7 General

Currently using mango beta and i still cannot connect to hidden SSID. Whats the deal? will it be supported in final build... I like my wifis.

That's really because hidden SSIDs do not increase your security. They were never designed to be hidden. Here's a nice article about it:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2865...hiding-your-wireless-ssid-really-more-secure/
EDIT: to clarify: I loathe hidden SSIDs. They are a pain to connect to and can possibly be a greater risk. They serve no purpose in my book.

I am not saying they do increase security, but the wifi at my work does not show the SSID and i do not have the ability to change that. Not sure why microsoft chooses to leave this out. Seems like such a simple thing to change.

There's an app for HTC devices to connect to hidden WiFi in the market place.

was, there isn´t anymore...

using samsung focus anyways... =(

Your two sentences contradict each other,
so a) should the OP shoot his admin or b) should MiSFiTs support it?

For the million time, Mango WILL support hidden SSID. Microsoft said it and Brandon Watson confirmed it.

Both, unfortunately. I have yet to see an AP which doesn't include the option to hide the SSID. As long as AP manufacturers allow such a functionality, even though it violates the standard, WiFi clients must support it.
The fact that SSID hiding should NEVER be used is a different matter altogether.

I use Omnia 7 with WP7 Engineering ROM from samfirmware and it support hidden SSID (maximum 3 hidden SSID)
I think the mango support it, but must be enabled by hardware vendor

What happened to the HTC app on the market place? When I saw it ages ago should of grabbed it there and then though I didn't need it at the time but I do now. Grrrrr.

iPhone Places

In the last couple of days all my iPhone-toting friends have been showing off their Places app which logs their location to their Facebook profile, along with a map link. Apparently it never worked before, but now it does.
It's a total load of cr*p, but in the interests of showing them that Android can do anything the iPhone can (usually better), and also to shut them up, I'd like to know if there's some way I can have that functionality on my Desire. Just so I can do it the once and say "It's a waste of time which is why no-one on Android uses it"
Any ideas?
Android user can also use this feature if you go to the facebook mobile site with your browser. However I have no doubt this feature will pop up in the next facebook app update.

I think the places thing could be a security risk. Even if you don't put your location, a friend can tag you as being in a location. The only way out of this is through changing privacy settings to opt out.

This is odd. I don't haver this feature. Maybe it's country specific.
I'm using 4sq and it updates my location to both facebook and twitter.

Pretty sure its location specific. I was in the states a couple of weeks ago when they were trialling it there. Came back an it wasn't available in the UK until recently. Still in a testing phase I believe. Will no doubt have a bigger roll out with the next update to the Facebook app.
At present it's only available in the US and the UK, the rest of Europe will receive it soon.
As above it'll probably be in the next Facebook app update, whenever that comes along...
i just made a page for us who seem to get left till last by facebook .. its on facebook.com/pages/Equal-Applications

Prefer to load media onto your Windows Phone 7 device the old fashioned way? Then it looks like your solution is just a simple Windows registry hack away. Coming shortly after the USB tethering hack, the folks at Mobile Tech World have now discovered that you can effectively turn your Windows Phone into a USB drive by modifying just three entries in the registry of your Windows desktop PC. Once done, you'll be able to drag and drop files to your heart's content -- albeit only on a computer that's had the registry hack done, of course. Hit up the source link below for the complete details.

Excellent news.
But what does the file structure look like? Does this break out of the isolated storage restrictions in any way?
I.e. can you create files in a general area accessible by multiple apps?
I'm thinking no, but we are now only one step away from Windows Phone 7 firmware becoming an actual operating system.

To the website developers

Please remove the force IE8 tag from the site. It is making a lot of features go a bit crazy. The edit box cursor does not like to move over in some cases. Also IE9 keeps saying that it is blocking some javascript to prevent cross domain scripting. I think there is a rogue advertisement or something.

Why are you trolling? There is nothing wrong with Internet Explorer.
No seriously. I'm not trolling. I'm genuinely asking why you are still on IE. Is there a specific reason? i'm asking because basically every other browser is better (UI, user experience, security)wise.
Because from a security standpoint Internet Explorer 9 is safer than the other browsers. Do some research into SSL spoofing on firefox as well as cross site scripting attacks.
Alright! Another IE9 brother.
And we've sent this up the chain to our server admin.

Chrome? Too used to it already
I use IE mostly for compatibility, I know, sounds strange but most of the important sites I go to work best in IE.
Otherwise I use firefox which is nearly as good in that respect and better in others.
Chrome I found to be a huge resource hog, and Opera often fails to display pages properly, either getting the layout wrong or failing to show images hosted on my webserver used in my sig.
Although unlikely, our server admin is testing this right now to make sure it doesn't break any other versions of IE.

First, your phone should be developer unlocked. Then, you can use a software called Screen Capturer (on XDA)
Actually, this app has been developed for quite a long time. I have used it for few months. Excellent! :good:

The quality's not awesome, but it gets the point across. I don't get why Microsoft didn't add screenshots to 7.8 though.
Another reason. I just use my Lumia for a zune in gym and make calls. Productive wise its useless to me.

Is there anyway to take a screenshot without the unlocking?
a util to connect to the computer and do it that way. I use this device for testing at work and my employer prefers to not unlock devices if it can be helped.

You need at least developer unlock.
You can get a free developer account if you have @.edu email. If you don't have it, you can try to borrow @.edu emails from your friends.
Attention: You just need @.edu email for activating your developer account. It means if you can ask friends to borrow @edu email for just within an hour (maybe 20 minutes if you are good at using computers ) to active your account.
But it is much better if you have your own @.edu email

Shorcut Virus
There are many available methods out there to overcome this, but some are difficult to use and most likely will only restore the files and folders, of which the system is already infected with the virus.
Depensa!
Not an antivirus solution and does not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software.
It prevent attacks that antivirus solution cannot fully detect, remove and restore.
IMPORTANT
Antivirus software and Depensa! are two complementary security layers and I recommended using both.
Depensa! works well and should run alongside antivirus software without any conflicts.
This looks very interesting. Will try it out and let you know how I get on. (Could be a while, have a lot of machines and OSs to try it on!)
Have you ever run it yourself in conjunction with Comodo Internet Security?
With all due respect for your work on this, is there any chance you could release the source code? Your account doesn't have a sufficiently developed reputation that I'm comfortable running an arbitrary EXE from the Internet on your say-so.
Also, I've never encountered the type of malware you're discussing; is it a regional thing?

Sorry, my codes are not for release. Yes, I dont have that reputation you're looking for, I am not a developer. --just a hobbyist or maybe a tinkerer having own personal projects. I just thought of sharing this and might help others suffering with the same problem.
Well, not really, but maintaining 15+ pc units and getting infected with the said malware is very annoying. Restricting the use of removable drives can be a better option though, but not in a public cafe where most of the user will be using it.
Thanks!
