[Q] Which Micro SD card to purchase? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm new to flashing custom ROM's and had recently flashed the RCMIX S v2.01.
I really like it, but found that it couldn't keep up with what I was doing - noticed some considerable lag.
I'm currently using the 4GB Class 2 Micro SD that came with the phone, but wondered if a higher class would speed it up a little?
Here's a link to the ROM in question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
Not sure if it's just the limitation of the Desire maybe?

Ya, I would think that a higher class card would make a considerable difference, but that also depends on which version of the ROM you are using, if you are using a A2SD version of the ROM which uses an sd-ext partition, then it would make a considerable difference, however a version of the rom which is not using sd-ext, may not be effected much by a faster card.

Thanks for your reply.
I was using the RCMixS_v2.0_A2SD+_BravoHboot - I had previously created a FAT32 & EXT4 partition.
I'm assuming that by default the ROM will work with the SD (without extra configuration)?
I also noticed the available RAM was quite low (around 40MB) I think - I guess I may not have set it up correctly?!

Ext4 or this ?

OK, so I have a class 10 SD card, gets about 14/down when I test against an 8k file with J SD card tester. Running ext4 cw3.x.x.5 and then bonsai .3 latest rev.
What about using the steps here to move around some of the partitions and apps on our phone ? How does our phone compare to the desire in regards to the NAND ?

I would like to move the cache files to the fastest speed memory possible which it seems to me is the class 10 SD in our phone - and would like to enable a swap file as well - what do you guys think? I read some of vipers thread on his rom with the possible a2sd commands - but just didnt see what would benefit me more and why, so didnt know which to try.
Sorry for so many questions recently, but I really am trying to get a good handle on this...)
bumpity-bump?

Titanium Back & 16Gb memory card

This is an ongoing problem for me and it's definitely not ROM related, but it makes flashing ROM's difficult, in fact downright awkward!
When installing apps from TB it will get through a couple then reboot, at which point nothing will install until I repair my ext partition (Thank God for AmonRA!). Then it will do the same thing again. It will do the same thing with installing apps from the market too, but it's not so pronounced as I don't tend to install loads of apps at once especially as I've got TB.
I found that TB worked fine with CM7 as it didn't install to the ext partition until I flashed DarkTremors aps2sd, and that worked fine as a way round the problem.
None of this happened until I upgraded my 8Gb to 16Gb sd card. The card seems fine in every respect, just the problem with installing aps :-(
Anyone with any ideas?
My previous thread on disabling aps2sd has not proved fruitful either.

Before I upgraded my pathetic 2gb I done a little research and the word on the street was the hero couldn't handle more than 8gb, recommended by HTC apparently!
Whether this was due to the limitations of the rom(1.6 at the time) or the hardware I don't know.
Have you tried re-formatting your SD card and making sure the ext partion is compatible with the rom your using?

Yeah I've reformatted and reformatted, initially I thought that the problem mgiht have been the backup files had become corrupt when transfering them over ... and yes I've tried ext2 ext3 and ext4 all with the same results (the only rom i tried which wasn't compatible with ext4 was Cronos).
Maybe its true about 8gb being the limit the hero can handle, maybe someone else can confirm or deny.
I'm sure I've seen some on here using 16Gb cards, but it would be good to know, maybe I should change to the Froyo aps2sd?
Maybe you could try doing a nandroid backup, and trying a different rom to see if it works, if not you could have a faulty SD card???
I a, using a 16 Gb card without problems, I always do a full wipe of my phone and a format of my card before flashing a new Rom. I use the aps2sc within the rom and make sure that the settings are right (install to external) before I use titanium.
I am on elelinux 6.2.0

The max htc Hero should handle would be 32gb I believe. According to link 1, htc hero supports SD 2.0. While SD 2.0 is also called SDHC, which according to link 2 its max is 32gb
Maybe you should try to pull /proc/last_kmsg to see why it rebooted? (post it at pastebin.org, and place url here. Maybe we can understand it )

Yeah I'm really confused as those were my settings also and I tried in on Elelinux 6.2 ... I think it must be either my Hero had a bad day it was born or the sd card did, but it always comes up clean when scanned.

16gb card here, use TB all the time and nadroid as well and never had a problem. Maybe your card has some faulty sectors. Try to copy 16gb on it on the PC and copy it back to your pc after you've made sure nothing was cached. Or try scandisk to see if a part of the flash is broken, maybe.
Using a cheap ebay-bought Team 16GB Class6 with TB, flashing and nandroids. No issues whatsoever. Works great!
I've scanned the disk multiple times, not tried a full 16gb transfer ... and I'll get the log output in a minute or two
output of /proc/last_kmsg

Thanks in advance!
Edit: It got to installing around 15apps this time before crashing. It varies as to when it dies, but it will. I even considered that it was overheating, or due to OC'ing, but it does the same thing regardless of temp or CPU speed
i also use 16gb sd card for 3 or 4 months and nothing ever happens like that. everything works perfect...
Have a feeling that it's corrupt, as I have a new problem with installing anything, I now get told there's not enough room to install or updates apps ... when there's plenty ... arrrgggg!
if 16gb isn't working for you, send the card to me. I have a working 2gb you can have instead.

Haha that's really funny.
Actually I ran some scans, fsck's and reformats with repair options, and if it wasn't for the reboot issue and instability issues I have with Elelinux 7.0.3 then I'm sure I've got it fixed... I hope ...

[Q] difference between Data2Ext and A2SD+

hi all,
I'm planning to flash a custom rom for the first time. Since I like HTC Sense, RCMixHD seemed like a good choice? (Is it?)
My phone is already rooted and via rom manager i have clockworkmod. I also made a backup via the recovery.
Now is my question: what is the difference between the two versions of the rom? Is one better than the other? And what exactly do I have to do with the sd-card to make it work correctly?
Thank you in advance,
Floris
A2SD+ - apps and app data moved to the SD card
Data2SD - ALL data is moved to the SD card
Quite simple really! Data2SD is better for storage BUT add strain to your SD card. Plus, you need a fast SD card for it to be worth while (Class 6 upwards)
thank you for such a quick reply!
Now I know I should chose the A2SD+ version since (for the time being) I only have the preinstalled memory card.
Now the only thing I have to do is partition it correctly?
Thanks!

Yes.

I've watched a video in which they use gparted to partition the sd-card. However they say in the video they think you need to create a fat16 partition for sdcards lower than 4gb and fat32 for larger cards.
Like it said, I use the preinstalled 4GB card. Should I use fat16 or fat32?
Also, in the RCMixHD topic, you can download a lot of different versions of the A2SD+ rom. I believe with different kernels and the first one is 2.0x1. I have downloaded the 2.0x1 version. Is that okay?
thanks!

I've never heard of that and can't think of any reason why you should create a fat16 partition.
I'd keep the fat32 partition, resize it (make it smaller), and create a 500mb ext3-partion at the end. (thats what I did months ago and everything works nicely)
Sry I cant help you with the rom-question, I don't use a hd-rom.
many thanks for the reply. Will try the rom and see Thanks for the help!

[Q] Apps on SD Card or Second Partition?

Is it better to have apps on the SD card or the SD card's second partition that I created, and If I flash a rom will they still be installed if they're in either location? I have the Samsung Extreme Speed Class 10 16GB Micro SDHC card.
Should I use the built-in a2sd or Link2sd, should the second partition be ext 3 or 4 and how should I format it?
I'm using ICS for HTC Desire 0.5.1, default HBoot, Clockworkmod Recovery Touch 5.8.0.2, aGPS and default homescreen with no scripts.
Thanks.
I can recommend to use Stock A2SD with EXT4 (fastest type). Partition size: => 512 MB.
Thanks for your response.
Yep apps on the ext partition. More advantageous. Saves space and doesn't break widgets. Apps are accessible even on USB mode.
Thanks also.
If I make an ext4 partition on my SD card and use the built-in a2sd with ICS for Desire, it will move all apps (including davlik, data and cache) to the second partition with the ability to move them back if needed?
If I flash a rom will they still be installed if they're in either location?
Yes, as far as I know, it moves all apps from your internal data to your ext partition.
a2sd supports moving your apps back, type "a2sd" to get a list of supported commands. The ones you are searching for are propably "a2sd nocachesd", "a2sd nodatasd" or maybe "a2sd noxdata", depending on the option you chose at installation.
If you flash a new rom, it depends on the rom and your installation setup, whether your apps remain or not.
If you flash a rom with the same a2sd script without wiping, your apps should remain. They will be lost in any other case. Always backup to be sure!
I have tried a few times with the A2SD script in (Sandvold's) ICS - but always get problems:
Very slow - at boot-up the "Preparing SD card" takes along time, and also for Apex launcher to internally catalogue the apps before being able to display their icons.
Worse still is downloading from the market, which takes 5x the length of time.
It is true I 'only' have a class 4 sd card - but others have reported this is OK.
I have ordered a class 10 card which will be with me shortly.
The worse problem is the phone keeps prompting me to input my SIM card number, and asking to reboot.
I am on stock HBOOT (but also previously tried cm7r2), I have tried stock and Tiamat kernals, and I have tried all different kinds of a2sd scripts. In some cases I have still run out of space, even though I have 1gb of ext4.
I am currently on Apex launcher, Tiamat kernal - and leaving apps where they are .... but I miss some of my favourites.
This configuration is stable - so I am hoping the new class 10 sd card will do the trick.

Class 10 SD cards are reported to be unstable on the Desire, someone may be lucky with it running properly, but a lot of people have problems; check out the forum.
Thanks for the info. However, I tried it and most apps appear to be on the SD card. I typed a2sd install, y, n, y.
Class 10 card ... my observations

I saw conflicting advice on class 10 cards ... but in any case I took the plunge and ordered one from Amazon - wasn't too expensive .. 11GBP.
I set up the card from scratch via Gparted - wiped the phone and reinstalled Sandvold's 0.5.3 (Tiamat kernal, stock a2sd, Apex launcher ) turned a2sd on via terminal - moving everything ... and reinstalled all apps from the market not from TB.
Result: a very stable phone, nice and quick, no problems with download speed ... so I am pleased as punch.

SD card ext and swap partitions: How useful? How large?

I'm using Mimicry 1.4.0 and quite happy with it in general. I've figured out that 4EXT is the way to go, and have ensured that all my internal partitions are ext4 (just now actually, I'm interested to see how much it helps). I have seen various people suggesting repartitioning of the SD card as a way to see a significant performance enhancement as well, and this seems reasonable to me but certain information on the matter seems to be lacking. There's a few posts here and there on the subject that have additional detail, but they're in other device forums or in response to folks running different ROMs..
So:
How helpful is repartitioning?
Should I just create an ext1 partition? Is ext2 additionally helpful? What about a swap partition?
What do the damn things actually do?
How large should I make the partitions? I assume there's a point of diminishing returns.
Since I am a cheap bastard, my cheap SD card is likely quite slow. How do I tell how fast it is? How relevant is that?
Much thanks!
+1
I'm also interested to know if anyone using swap has seen any performance improvements.
When you make for example 128Mb ext4 and 256 Mb swap partition to your sd card for G2 and plugged in it. Stock rom will not use the swap file but stock rom will detect the ext4 part and use it for keeping the cache there.
and for the custom roms like CM series and Sense roms you'll need to make a swap partition and if you like ext4 partition on sd card. (ext4 is not necessary).
Because G2 and desire Z has 368Mb ram and these new custom roms are needing a bit larger space then stock rom. thats why you can use " swap_enable_v2" for additional ram using. ( Remember if your sd card's write speed more then 6 Mb/s ) of you can simply use some scripts like SuperCharger_V6 or some other like this.
I stongrly suggest you to use Swap enabler and SuperCharger_V6 at the same time like me. it increased my desire z's permormance more then %40 and it awesome now.
:good:
Well, I'd say swap partition does not always is a good idea - constant reads and writes of the specific part of the card may degrade it's performance.
That's why I'd suggest trying DataSwap, which can just create plain file on the card.
I'm using it for over 4 months now, and I'm pleased.
On the side note AFAIR /sdcard should be FAT, and not EXT4
Partitioning the sd card or creating a swap file on sd card is not so different. Still mskes alot reads and writes
Sent from my Nokia 3310
If you are using ICS/JB - I put my swap file on the /cache directory since it doesn't seem to ever get filled up. Then I am not using the sd card.
