This is my first post, so please escuse me if I dont make myself completely clear the first time around.
I would like to install a custom ROM on my Epic 4g, however I would like to be able to avoid going thru the hassle of installing a new kernel, if that is even possible. Is there a ROM that anyone can point me to that I could easily start out with? My phone as it stands is,,,
Model # SPH-D700 of course
Firmware Ver. 2.2.1
Baseband ver. S700.0.55.EC05
Kernel Ver. 2.6.32.9
Build# FROYO.EC05
Hardware Ver D700.0.5
Rooted
This is my second phone, last week I totally bricked my phone and had to get a replacement because I figured I knew it all. Any advice would be truly appreciated.

Syndicate Rom Frozen 1.2......but you will need to flash a kernel.....for almost every custom Rom.....just flash the kernel right after the Rom through CWM Recovery!!!!!!
Is there a particular version of CWM that I should use? Last time I tried I beleive I was using 3.0.2.5 or similar. I was starting to get the impression that I should have been using a 2.0 version?
My current version of CWM is v3.0.2.5 Also, does Frozen use EXT4 file system? This would require reformatting, correct?

Any Theme Lists for Frozen 1.2?
Now that I have Frozen 1.2 up and running, are there any themes that I can try out?
So far I have seen "The Joker" and "Heinz57". I am currently running "Emotionless Beast" with a few modifications to the fonts for my week eyesight. Is there a site that I can go to and check out others. Didnt find too much listed on youtube, and in my searches here on XDA I didnt turn up much more.
Edit: I guess I should have started this as a new post in the Themes section.
I always really liked the Matted Reds and Blues.

Can someone please help me. I am googling, xda, phandroid, htcevohacks and not finding any clear cut answer to this question: Can i root my evo running 1.32.651.6 (SD update)? i see there are ways to root with the new update 1.47........., so since i cant find any clear cut answers regarding 1.32.651.6 should i accept the update to 1.47.651.1? I am so confused some people say they have used toast method to root 1.32.651.6 and others who say that it is impossible, can someone please help me. Thank you

I almost feel bad...all I saw was ".6" (Thinking it was referencing 2.2) and I was about to facepalm.
Some have had problems with the original simpleroot (I was one of them)...go here:

and do Toasts Part 1 and Part 2 step for step. If you run into any roadblocks, just post back to this thread and we will be happy to help you out.
I was a total Android/Linux noob when I got the Evo. I came from WinMo and as far as modding goes, it felt like I went from Champ to Chump. Read, make mistakes, read some more, fix your mistakes, and learn. It doesn't get any better than that. Just remember, we are a community that is here to help, not do it for you.
Finally ROOTED!!
OK guys i have rooted my EVO thanks to u guys. I have installed Froyo DeOdexed RevE.1, I have downloaded rom manager from the market. Now do i always have to wipe every time i load a new rooted rom? Also do i have to go into the shell with evo connected to PC to get to the menu for wiping and loading roms? Do i also have to load the updated radios and wimax or do the rooted roms come with them already? Many thanks.

Wiping is advised when flashing a new ROM, unless you are upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM (or if the author says no-wipe is required). Wiping is almost always required if you are changing between different ROM.
You can enter recovery by turning phone off, pressing power + volume down, or booting into recovery from apps such as Rom Manager, Spare Parts, Quickboot.
Ok, more than fairly new to android. Ive ran on windows, windows mobile and blackberry for a very long time. Finally decided Android seemed like the hot ticket (cus f*** apple) and im trying to get into this stuff.
Im a geek whose been de-geeked (haven't spent much time on the computer in the last 8-12 months, comps currently unplugged and still packed after a move, currently at a library to post this.... you get my point), and so im limping into the android world. I bought and love my epic, but I didnt buy it to run it stock so im looking to upgrade. Things I really want in a rom/want my epic to do (i understand if not ALL are possible):
-Full Flash (10.1?)
-Preferred Froyo base
-I dont mind the look/feel of the stock Shell, but Ive never experienced any others so I guess Im open to suggestions and testing them out.
-For some reason, my images don't load in full quality, Ive been told some ROMs fix this. id like it fixed.
... My list is surprisingly shorter than I initially thought it would be when I started this post... so I may edit it soon as I remember other important things.
P.S. Ive done some searching around, don't flame me. It seems hard (extremely hard) to look at each one ROM individually, see its features and what is has to offer, compare and contrast and then pick one. Ive seen a few lists with random ones compared, but no list of all of them (I imagine that would be very hard to keep up to date). It seems more like, when someone makes a ROM they say what it is, what it does, what is has and if you miss the bandwagon then you miss it completely.
Thank you for all recommendations
I like bonsai rom on froyo. Its fast and very stable. It also has swap enabled. If you wanted to go to this froyo rom for flash support then you have to upgrade cause your on eclair now. The easiest way to get to this rom is to go into the dev. Section and find the one click root plus clockwork version 3. Not 2.5.5 but version 3. But before you do that you need use a program called Odin to flash your modem from di18 eclair to dk28 froyo. Then once you boot into cwm it will change your filesystem over from rfs to ext4 and then you flash the bonsai rom and your done. Sorry I don't have links for you I'm using tapatalk and its a pain in the ass to post links but go to the dev section and look its all in there. Good luck

I've tried a few different roms but so far I like ViperRom's frozen 4.0.3 the best. It has flash and is very very stable. Its based on dk28 and the step by step instructions are a breeze on their thread. It uses cwm 2.5 and everything is available on their thread.

No there isnt, i updated via updatezip both 2.2 and the modem, i first flashed the modem, then tried to flash 2.2 but i had to flash the d118 stock rom unrooted then it updated and then i was able to ext my system then get on bonsai.
Since ive had my epic, ive avoided odin all together..
I am wanting to put a new ROM on my new EVO. I got it from sprint the other day and want all its bloatware off of it. I am new to this but I have dont similar things in the past.
Reasons I want to ROOT and flash:
Get rid of sprint bloatware
Unlock Wi-Fi tethering ability
Get best and most optimized version of android
Now here is where I need your help...I dont really know which rom to get. Is the 2.3 Gingerbread ROM work with no bugs? I dont want to be a buggy beta tester I want something solid but something better than what I have.
Here is my phone information:
Android Version
2.2
Baseband Version
2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version
2.6.32.17-gee557fd
htc-kernel(at)and18-2#15
Build Number
3.70.651.1 CL294884
Software Number
3.70.651.1
Browser Version
Webkit 3.1
PRI version
1.90_03
PRL Version 6067
I dont know what some of it means but if you could tell me what I should update and give me a little information on how to do it. I dont know what baseband/radio does. I dont have the latest version should I get it?
Mainly I want help on choosing a ROM to flash to. Gingerbread would be nice but if there isnt a stable version just link me to a better ROM of 2.2 to flash to. I just want rid of all this bloatware and I want to be able to theater.
Thanks for the help =)
try vaelpak 3.2, i've been using it for a while now and love it its like a mix of sense roms with asop roms but with sense base so everything works flawlesly
If your looking for a good rom that is stable and everything works. I would strongly recommend Vaelpak 3.2 RC2. I have been running this rom for about 2 months straight, well it started as RC1. Everything works and will do what you asked above. The software is still 2.2, mainly because Jim is waiting for the final versos of 3.2 to be released. Yes I have had a few minor issues, more like minor annoyance. But when one comes up I get on there forum and Jim always seems to be able to fix the issue.

Go to the dev section and find the CM thread. You need to flash the "gapps" (google apps) in order to get the google mail, market, re-sync contacts, etc. Not sure if you can do that thru rom manager, I've never used it.

There are many, many roms out there. It just depends on the what you are looking for. As for me I like having a rom that is not only stable for everyday use, but also having everything work properly. Not all roms are created equal and will vary in features. Like I stated before I love using vaelpak, but other people will swear by different roms. As for cm7, I have used it. But it just wasn't for me and screwed with my phone. As for the rooting process I would recommend Unrevoked. Very quick and simple. Also always do backups, even after rooting your phone. The other nice thing about Vaelpak over cm7, not trying to bash cm7 or its developers. But with Vaelpak there is a thing under settings were all the new radios and kernals are listed. Someone please correct me if i am wrong, with cm7 you have to flash back to a "sense" rom to update the radios. And if you cant tell I am very bias with Vaelpak, I have tryed others but they simply dont compair.

Chances are if you just got the phone it should be current or you can go under settings> system updates and update your firmware(wouldn't recommend if you plan on rooting),profile, PRL ans the software. The radios are what allows you to have service. Once again someone correct me if I am wrong.
With certain Roms (Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo comes to mind) you will need to make sure you have the latest everything. There's a link in the thread for the rom to a flashable zip - you flash this through recovery as you would a rom, kernel, etc. Read the first few posts in the thread for a rom you're going to flash. You don't want to miss something.
I flash everything manually through recovery (Amon Ra specifically, but which you use is entirely your preference) to minimize error & ensure everything that I want to wipe is wiped - properly. If you feel more comfortable with Rom Manager, there's nothing wrong with that. I recommend at least learning how to do it all manually in case you're ever in a bind.
As far as roms go - try them out... all of them. Or at least the ones that fit your needs. For stable and close to stock I recommend Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo. Warm Z is also nice, with a newer version of Sense. Vaelpak is a really great rom if you want certain Sense apps (like the dialer) but without the Sense launcher/additional useless crap. CM7 is a great 2.3 AOSP rom. It's actually stable now, but you might need to do the GPS fix if you have issues with the GPS. MIUI is another 2.3 AOSP rom, it's very polished but no 4G. It's a lot different than CM7 or any other rom. There are some "GingerSense" roms out now, but from what I've heard they're not stable at this point.
Three random tips:
1) Do not pull the battery during a radio update. After you reboot you'll see a black screen with a downwards arrow or an Android in a box. Just wait for it to finish. If you freak and pull the battery, your phone is most likely dead forever.
2) Buy Titanium Backup Pro and Root Explorer. Two most useful apps I've paid for. With either of these apps you can remove any unwanted apps (or with TB, freeze them). So if a rom comes with apps you don't want, you can easily get rid of them.
3) Don't base anything on quadrant scores, they're pretty much useless. Even if a rom puts you below average, ignore it as long as you're happy with your phone.

Cyanogen has really disappointed me. I was running mod 6 on my hero for a long time with no problems, then mod 6 on my evo with no problems. I installed mod 7 on my evo about a month ago and it has already basically crapped out on me twice. Just becoming really slow and everything force closing or just giving me a black screen when I try to open the app. Then I restore it back to right when I flashed it, and it works great for a couple weeks. I would suggest trying the vaelpak 3.2. I have no idea how it is, but I am gonna flash it right now and see how it is during the day tomorrow.

which themes and roms can I use if I rooted using odin?
and if i have drockstar.clean.kernal.eco5v 1.02 installed
too root i used eco5x_dxc.tar
hope that helps hard to get this far and lost without trying something and getting locked no load or looping and having to reflash
how do i flash it, instructions do i have to change it to anything or download and flash?
is there something on the market to help flash, use odin or recovery, change name to flash?
All of them. I reccomemt SRF 1.1.1 + twilight kernal 1.11 (in same thread) if you like froyo or marcusant rom if you want gingerbread. Make sure you are using cwm 3.0.2.5
Did the news get around about a guy named butcher pete?
I dont think it matters if you rooted via odin as to the themes as much as it does the kernel supporting the them and the modem supporting it and the version of rom you are running. I have noticed there are quite a few that will go together but you have to make sure of them all
okay then what and how do i know what i can put toghether
this is alot different then running the moment
that was alot easier
is there something that would let me know which rom i can run compared to theme, etc?
and how do i go about doing that?
this is alot different then the moment so like they say.....still wet behind the ears, but learning from you
Let me just say this first. If you have read anything the most from this site it is research it. There are alot of wiki and posts for almost everything. I rushed into it and was so in a bad way and someone helped me out so here I am. what have you done to your phone. Rooted??If so did you CW3 or Odin. Are you stock dk28...
this could go on and on. If anyone sees a problem with what you are saying or something doesnt seem right the Devs will jump in. But if it is handled in wiki or past posts...dont expect a fast response. Not that they are neglecting...but they are busy.
rooted using odin...eco5x_dxc.tar
and i have drockstar.clean.kernal.eco5v 1.02 installed
thats all i have done
got all from sdx site not rushing had phone for 2 months so another day
isnt going to hurt, want to be safe and learn
different from moment
so?

I have put together a new Rom version of SyndicateRom Frozen 1.1.0 called RandomRom. It includes many of the updates and modifications made to 1.1.1.
More specifically, it includes the Genocide Kernel and solves freezes. It also comes Pre-Journaled.
You'll also find the link to the CWM 3.0.2.5 upgrade thread in the changelog. Everything you will need should be linked.
OK, so a week or so ago I saw this page
w w w dot androidauthority dot com/galaxy-s2-epic-4g-touch-d710-ics-stock-firmware-fc15-pre-rooted-68214/
and downloaded the Odin OneClick application and rooted my Epic 4g Touch and flashed the FC15 ICS rom at one time. It seemed easy enough and I had never messed around with rooting before. I didn't instal ClockworkMod or any other recovery thing because I didn't know what it did or how to use it.
I rooted because I wanted to try to use ORBOT to TOR everything on my phone to try and get around my company's web filter so I could actually use my phone while at work. Well that didn't work but I figured WTH ICS is pretty cool and now I have it early. Well then I realized that there seemed to be many, many newer versions of the ROM out there and then I started to see the posts about there being an issue with the ICS ROMS and that I could brick my phone for good. So I figured I'd just stay put. Well now my phone runs SUPER HOT and the battery drains within 30 mins or so of regular use from a full charge.
I am going to recalibrate my battery, but if that doesn't work (because I've been reading that is doesn't really do anything) what options are there?
Keep in mind that I am a TOTAL NOOB at this, and most of the direction I have been reading go WAAAYYY over my head. I realize I was dumb to jump into this without doing my research, but I figured it was as easy as Jailbreaking my old iPhone and I could just restore to go back to factory settings. Clealy rooting is more in depth than that! At this point I don't care if I lose everything on my phone either if I have to.
Help!

Yeah that was dumb not researching more...but check out sfhub's el29 odin one click, you'll restore back to stock rooted el29, which was the last OTA update for this phone. You'll still be rooted, but back safely on gingerbread. Then you can do you're own research from there.

You can use any of sfhub's one-click applications (these things should be classified as a national treasure) to either go back to GB or move forward with ICS. The latest is FE22. The heating up issue has been reported by a number of people over different builds but usually a reboot fixes it.
So the superbricking issue won't effect me if I flash the new ICS ROM straight from my current ROM? I thought the warning posted on here was saying it wasn't a good idea to do that.

You're fine as long as you use ODIN to install the new ICS build. To avoid the "superbrick" just don't wipe from recovery or factory reset and you'll be fine. (If you really want to use sfhub's new utility or calk's format all to do the job safely.)
Thanks guys! I was able to use Odin to flash back to EL29 successfully. From there I installed Clockworkmod-Rouge and flashed to Calkulin's E4GT v3.0. Things are much better now. Thanks for all your help!
