which themes and roms can I use if I rooted using odin?
and if i have drockstar.clean.kernal.eco5v 1.02 installed
too root i used eco5x_dxc.tar
hope that helps hard to get this far and lost without trying something and getting locked no load or looping and having to reflash
how do i flash it, instructions do i have to change it to anything or download and flash?
is there something on the market to help flash, use odin or recovery, change name to flash?
All of them. I reccomemt SRF 1.1.1 + twilight kernal 1.11 (in same thread) if you like froyo or marcusant rom if you want gingerbread. Make sure you are using cwm 3.0.2.5
Did the news get around about a guy named butcher pete?
I dont think it matters if you rooted via odin as to the themes as much as it does the kernel supporting the them and the modem supporting it and the version of rom you are running. I have noticed there are quite a few that will go together but you have to make sure of them all
okay then what and how do i know what i can put toghether
this is alot different then running the moment
that was alot easier
is there something that would let me know which rom i can run compared to theme, etc?
and how do i go about doing that?
this is alot different then the moment so like they say.....still wet behind the ears, but learning from you
Let me just say this first. If you have read anything the most from this site it is research it. There are alot of wiki and posts for almost everything. I rushed into it and was so in a bad way and someone helped me out so here I am. what have you done to your phone. Rooted??If so did you CW3 or Odin. Are you stock dk28...
this could go on and on. If anyone sees a problem with what you are saying or something doesnt seem right the Devs will jump in. But if it is handled in wiki or past posts...dont expect a fast response. Not that they are neglecting...but they are busy.
rooted using odin...eco5x_dxc.tar
and i have drockstar.clean.kernal.eco5v 1.02 installed
thats all i have done
got all from sdx site not rushing had phone for 2 months so another day
isnt going to hurt, want to be safe and learn
different from moment
so?

In the development section there are numerous ways to upgrade to cwm 3 and root at the same time. And qbking77 has great tutorial vids on youtube to show you the steps.

I have put together a new Rom version of SyndicateRom Frozen 1.1.0 called RandomRom. It includes many of the updates and modifications made to 1.1.1.
More specifically, it includes the Genocide Kernel and solves freezes. It also comes Pre-Journaled.
You'll also find the link to the CWM 3.0.2.5 upgrade thread in the changelog. Everything you will need should be linked.

Just wondering I usually just use the stock rom....but what's the point if rooting so I want to start flashing some custom ones....just wondering with there being soo many different roms out there are there any requirements that u should be looking for b4 I go and just flash a rom such as screen type or kernal, or whether I'm using froyo or just if I'm on 2.2 or not as much detail would be helpful
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
the requirements are mostly up to you.
since you are rooted you can flash any rom. All roms come with some type of kernel. if you are going to flash a custom kernel you will want to make sure it is ok for your rom. this mostly comes into play with 2.1 v 2.2 and asop v sense. these are not interchange able.
My recommendation is to figure out what you want (ie if you need 4g working or if you are looking for speed or battery power etc)
once you have this list of things you want to make sure you have start flashing roms and see if you like it. once you have it set up and play with it for a bit nand back up it and then try the next. that way if you want to go back you can easily do so.
Most people find a rom they love and tend to always go back to it even after trying other roms.
Here is a good list of the top 5 roms in my opinion ( no specific order)
Damage Control (Sense)
CyanogenMod 6 (ASOP - no 4g)
Fresh (SENSE)
Evio (SENSE)
Baked Snacks (SENSE)
For kernels The only thing you have to worry about for the most part is if the rom is ASOP (really only CM6) or sense (pretty much everything else) the 2 main sense kernels (netarchy and kingsx) both work for almost every sense rom and work with epson and nova screens
anyway good luck and happy rom hunting.
Thank you very informative, kudos too you boss....now the only other thing that concerned me is that from what I can understand when I use certain roms (or might be kernels) I was reading may downgrade my prl- along with similar issues , and also what I've gathered from that is with some/most its a ***** too update again so if there are any guidelines for these kind of"issues" I as well as I'm sure most others new to android would love some guidance.....ohh and one of viruses roms says "your warrantee is now void".......this doesn't do anything other than explain that if you leave your phone flashed with anything other than an official android software and haven't reset back too s-on....your warrantee is void by htc/sprint ...but going back from what I understand is easy as using unrevoked s-on and downloading and flashing the latest official 2.2......just tying up loose ends..... Thank you all.
when you unlock nand the engineer boot changes your PRI to 1.34. I believe someone has a method using unrevoked forever and a custom img to prevent this but i have not done a lot of research on it since i have been rooted since i got my phone.
There are several methods to get back to 1.4 pri. For many the PRI made no difference to performance in few areas people report increased speeds (they also noticed these speeds differences right after they rooted). The most common method is to dial ##768# and then reset yuor profile (you will need your MSL code) once thats done wipe dalvik and cache and then cross your fingers. the pri is sometimes downloaded and installed during the over the air activation.
For some it is quick and painless and others like me took over 100 tries over several weeks. I have no actual benefit that i can tell but i like knowing i have everything up to date.
As for the warranty issue you are correct. If you can boot your phone it is relatively easy to get back to an unrooted phone. If your phone is rooted they say your warranty is void. so just dont give the phone back to them with out unrooting. the method you listed above is correct.
I don't know how to give you credit....but thank you....how does this work: +10

Last thing lol with themes dies the rom have to support them or if I'm on stock rooted rom can I install a theme and of not can I alter a stock rooted rom to be able to support them
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
it depends on the theme. A majority of the themes for 2.2 will work on stock rooted as well as the sense 2.2 roms. If using and ASOP rom (ex CM 6) you will want to make sure the theme says it works with it.
some common ones for 2.2 sense are the Aloysius themes, riptide themes, and manups themes. there are lots of others depending on your taste so check them out.
if you are unsure i would nand back up before you apply the theme and if something looks funky once you install it just revert back.
Probably shouldn't have said "last question" but adb is giving me problems "error: device not found" and when I get it working I can't delete apps (sprint bloatware) it says "read only file". And I tried to install a theme but it just made my evo boot into what looked like an optical illusion....which was cool for a second...but compleatly un-functional....it was that revolutionary theme that was updated on 8/30 any suggestions?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i mailed you a lot of the response to this before i saw you posted it as well. I'm not going to retype everything but i will update to let you know that i installed the theme on my phone (i currently have evio 1.2 rom) and it went as expected. I did not try installing all the custom options but the main theme itself installed and didnt come up with an optical illusion type effect so i am confident we can get this working once you get back to me on some of the information.
Ok, more than fairly new to android. Ive ran on windows, windows mobile and blackberry for a very long time. Finally decided Android seemed like the hot ticket (cus f*** apple) and im trying to get into this stuff.
Im a geek whose been de-geeked (haven't spent much time on the computer in the last 8-12 months, comps currently unplugged and still packed after a move, currently at a library to post this.... you get my point), and so im limping into the android world. I bought and love my epic, but I didnt buy it to run it stock so im looking to upgrade. Things I really want in a rom/want my epic to do (i understand if not ALL are possible):
-Full Flash (10.1?)
-Preferred Froyo base
-I dont mind the look/feel of the stock Shell, but Ive never experienced any others so I guess Im open to suggestions and testing them out.
-For some reason, my images don't load in full quality, Ive been told some ROMs fix this. id like it fixed.
... My list is surprisingly shorter than I initially thought it would be when I started this post... so I may edit it soon as I remember other important things.
P.S. Ive done some searching around, don't flame me. It seems hard (extremely hard) to look at each one ROM individually, see its features and what is has to offer, compare and contrast and then pick one. Ive seen a few lists with random ones compared, but no list of all of them (I imagine that would be very hard to keep up to date). It seems more like, when someone makes a ROM they say what it is, what it does, what is has and if you miss the bandwagon then you miss it completely.
Thank you for all recommendations
I like bonsai rom on froyo. Its fast and very stable. It also has swap enabled. If you wanted to go to this froyo rom for flash support then you have to upgrade cause your on eclair now. The easiest way to get to this rom is to go into the dev. Section and find the one click root plus clockwork version 3. Not 2.5.5 but version 3. But before you do that you need use a program called Odin to flash your modem from di18 eclair to dk28 froyo. Then once you boot into cwm it will change your filesystem over from rfs to ext4 and then you flash the bonsai rom and your done. Sorry I don't have links for you I'm using tapatalk and its a pain in the ass to post links but go to the dev section and look its all in there. Good luck

I've tried a few different roms but so far I like ViperRom's frozen 4.0.3 the best. It has flash and is very very stable. Its based on dk28 and the step by step instructions are a breeze on their thread. It uses cwm 2.5 and everything is available on their thread.

No there isnt, i updated via updatezip both 2.2 and the modem, i first flashed the modem, then tried to flash 2.2 but i had to flash the d118 stock rom unrooted then it updated and then i was able to ext my system then get on bonsai.
Since ive had my epic, ive avoided odin all together..
Hey All. I have been on a roller coaster with My Samsung Epic.
Recently I Finally from DK28 updated to Froyo for my Samsung Epic and flashed Viper trinity ROM on it. It was cool up until certain apps did not work well such as Tom the talking Cat and Hulu. Furthermore I rely heavily on my Sprint Navigator, which was Removed after the Viper ROM flash.
I tried to factory restore and reset but had no luck, my phone actually never was able to reset as from the Privacy reset through the Phones gui it would freeze, and if I did the -vol, camera, and power it still kept the viper ROM.
With out further reading I watched a youtube video and ended up using Odin 1.6 and reset it back to DG27. I tried to than only update to 2.2 Froyo without adding any fancy Roms but it failed to do so.
Thats when I read it could only be flashed forward if its DK28. Im suck now and cant get back to DK28. Ive tried Odin again with the SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-Rel.Tar.MD5, and sometimes removing the .MD5 part.. but odin still gives me errors. ive been at this for the last 9 hours and could use some help, guidance and actual Links that are not broken or have a 404 error on them.
-
Problem: Cannot use Odin to get back to DK28 and is stuck on DG27
Solution I want: To be able to take my crappy Samsung Epic and make it Epic with Froyo 2.2 so I can one click root it, installing Flash and Hulu.
-
Thank you all!
You may want to Odin to DI18,and then going to EB13 either by an update.zip,or Samsungs tool, mini kies if I remeber right.Or you can try one of the current FROYO ROMs,EB13 based.
Sent from my MyFrankenstein E=Bee13² ROM using XDAP App...
should be able to ODIN right to EB13. look for that file and follow the steps. ODIN doesnt care about deltas etc... it writes to your phone regardless. then you can one click root and rock your custom ROM to get hulu going.
That would be nice.. but EB13 and DI18 I cannot find.. I have been looking for them and have come up with nothing. I have searched and most of the links are the stupid Gator link with 404page error.. Also the Stock roms are just impossible to find.. Im a hammer stroke away from caliming my phone was dropped and just getting a new one. I hae tried Odin3+V1.61 with Victory PIT and SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.MD5 and without the MD5 and continue to get an error....
Please, Links and tutorials will be greatly helpful.
NVM. I found it. Took forever to find the right TARs and what not.. now I have to find a way to go from DI18 to DK28.. OTA update doesnt seem to work.. and warning out there, ViperTrinity Rom is slow and laggy.. Trying to watch Hulu is unwatchable and also a simple app like Tom the Talking Cat does not work well.. Laggy as a mother!
Why dk28? You should just go to eb13 anyway, laggy buggy issues are at least somewhat if not entirely because of dk28, it was a very buggy leak. Now that eb13 is out go to that, throw on a custom kernel if nothing else and you should be in much better shape.
I believe ptfdmedic's newest midnight rom has flashable zips to restore whatever stock sprint apps you might want. Ill see if I can find you links to all you'd need.
Edit: you should be able to use this and odin strait to eb13 froyo stock pre-rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Still looking to see where it was that I found the sprint apps flashable zip that could be used if you went to a custom rom but wanted nav back.
Edit2: ptfdmedic does have a sprint apps edify zip on his site http://lostandtired.com/ under the android development section which I assume these work with EB13 if you were to go to a custom rom with them removed.
The ROM that I was actually thinking of was ecooce's new frankenstein rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982415 He has zips with all the removed apps so you can add back what you need.

Hey guys, let me begin for apologizing if this is in the wrong place. I've been trying to read as much as I possibly can regarding these problems, and I'm stressed, and tired.
That out of the way, allow me to attempt to explain...
My Epic 4g seems to be "bricked" but only in the "soft way" (I've seen this term used before, and it seems to fit.)
It will still boot into Clockwork 2.5~ but no further, if I try to boot it farther, it will hang at the Samsung Screen and play the music.
Before anyone flames me, please, try to remember what it is like to have no idea what the hell is what after something weird happens.
I am running OSX Snowleopard, and have gotten Heimdall to run, but it will not recognize my epic when I put it into download mode. I feel like I am out of options, but I do have one more idea, and I wanted to run this past all of you ...
Since I cannot get my Heimdall to find my epic when I put it into download mode, would it be feasible for me to get a microsd reader (I found one at walgreens for 20 bucks), put an update.zip on it of like a stock eclair or froyo ( I hardly even care which version now, I just would like a working phone...) and run the update from sd via the still working clockwork recovery??
If this would work, it would rock, but I haven't seen any mention of it anywhere. I don't see why it would work, but then again I am not a wizard.
Any suggestions? Comments? Reassurance or Guidance?
If anyone could point me towards the best update.zip to try and push via the microsd reader, I would be eternally grateful. Or in general, if you have a better idea, I'd love to hear it...
Thank you so much in advance, to anyone willing to give me a shot or lend a hand...

I have NEVER tried this but it sounds like its worth a shot...i would try CM7 just to get something booting (and its a small file to DL).
But you should definitely "find" a copy of windows (google it *cough cough*) and use bootcamp (search in spotlight) to partition your hard drive and install it and have a mac with osx and windows lol i have xp but you can try newer...
its pretty easy (instructions are detailed) and you will never have to worry about "soft bricks" because you have odin
Yeah, I've toyed with the idea of bootcamping again, it's just such a damn pain, and so many of the "findable" windows on google are infected with godknows what. By CM7 do you mean cyanogen mod 7? I've never used cyanogen mod, if you could point me in a good direction I'd appreciate it.
Also, thank you for the civil reply... I have noticed a degree of distast for those who really don't know thier **** on many fourms, but I figure, everyone is starting at some point....
So should I look for a update.zip for CM7 and attempt to push it? Are there other considerations I should take into account? I really see no reason the microsd reader wouldn't work, and given that my phone is rooted and has clockwork operational on it (god willing it's as workable as it seems)....

Your welcome, and HERE is CM7 (cyanogen mod 7). This is just to see if your phone still works (seems to me like it will) and after that you can root with clockwork 3.0.0.6 (if you want ext4). Be sure to have an EXT4 compatible rom when u boot into CWM. You will need to flash it after it converts your filesystem.
If you dont mind having a "dead" phone i suggest trying bootcamp...some files dont have "god knows what" and you will be able to odin EC05 prerooted. ALOT easier lol by dead i mean get no calls and sms, etc..
Just download file, put on sd card and flash...should work. I hope it works for you!
I'm going to give this a shot -- Got nothing to loose either way, and I've heard sweet things about cyanogen anyway. I'm trying to see all this as a learning experience. I was a bit freaked to try custom roms before, but at this point, why the hell not, right?
One question: what is this EXT4 business? I've seen it popping up, and I think I missed the boat. What would you suggest for a EXT4 compatible rom to use? ( Are you on an epic, by the way?)

Lmao yea i have an epic. And ext4 is just a faster filesystem than RFS which is stock. Also most roms have journaling off which means you
cant just pull your battery and stuff like that because you will have corrupt data (most likely). Journaling enabled (like in stock with RFS)
will simply keep a journal of what the system does and in case of an improper shutdown (battery pull or phone falls and batt. pops out or
batt. drain to 0) when it turns on it will "recover" from where it left off. The only bad thing about this is that it writes to the nand (i
think) ALOT...maybe more than RFS but really it would kill your phone in 3-4 years and you probably wont keep it that long anyway lol
I usually run bonsai but you have to sign up to their forum for the download...i dont think im allowed to post a link. but ive heard Syndicate
rom frozen is also VERY good. And quick. But in short, if you want a speedy epic, choose EXT4 lol
Also you can try MIUI 1.3.5 rom..Its really cool. Sort of like best of iphone and android in one. Im actually one of the guys trying to port it now...
but im not a dev lol
Good luck!! and trust me, custom roms are fun. Especially when you become a flash-a-holic lol
Yeah, I get the feeling it's pretty addicting. I'm going to start by flashing CM7, as you said, just to make sure the thing isn't an expensive paperweight. Next I am either going to try Syndicate or try out the froyo stock w/out bloatware....Since I had it rooted months before the OTA happend, I'd been stuck on eclair. I may just be happy with a working phone, but as this point, i've tasted blood.

Thanks again for your help! I truly appreciate it!
As long as you're rooted with a working ClockWorkMod and can manually access your sd card, you can flash anything to your phone. You may want to make sure you format Data, Cache, And Dalvik Cache 3 times before flashing a rom though. Also, you may want to upgrade to ClockWorkMod 3. I have it referenced in my signature. It will need to be booted into first, while it converts to ext4, then a suitable rom like Syndicate Rom Frozen will have to be flashed.
Have you tried to fix it with an update.zip? My assumption is that this would not work for a number of reasons.
Your questions are not new, and have been asked more than once in their own threads as well as general question threads. GOOGLE search your question with "XDA" in the search bar. It's your friend, and it will answer your questions.
Just to recap:
1. CWM 2.5 or 3
2. Flash suitable rom
3. Shutdown properly, no reboot or battery pull!
4. Boot into CWM
5. Backup, and then immediately restore! This will re-engage Journaling and prevent future data corruption
6. Use Google! The more questions that are asked repeatedly, the more threads people will have to dig through to find answers.
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.
I have been using google extensively, and it's just that many times I would get conflicting or not quite as clear as I was hoping answers, but yes I understand what you are trying to point out here. Syndicate seems like my best best, and as such I am going to need to get to CWM 3. I went to the thread, I am assuming I should use the new version (EB13) as opposed to the the DK28, correct? Since Syndicate is an EC05, I should go for the newer one?
Excuse me for my ignorance, again, we all start somewhere...
Thanks!

I can also recommend Bonsai and Midnight as fantastic roms. I use them all, but Syndicate is my current. Syndicate EB13 is the one you want. EC05 didn't change the firmware, it only modified the modem. I've tested EB13 as well as EC05 with Syndicate, switching back and forth, with no visible problems. If your phone is on EB13 or EC05, then Syndicate Frozen 1.1 should work nicely, it's linked in my signature.
Yeah, unfortunatly it was stuck on DK18 for a varitety of reasons.... I hope that doesn't change anything...

If you're able to use Odin on your computer, just use my CWM Odin link. You'll find EB13 pre-rooted with CWM 3 and you can flash that straight from the computer. Just be sure you have a Rom on your SD card first so it's ready to install from the recovery menu.
Odin is not a possibility right now, however, I just got CM7 to boot. And although it seems to have no service (or it could be because airplane mode toggles on and off faster than I can blink) it seems to be at least functional in a baseline way. I'm going to try to use one of the CWM backups I saved on my computer to see if that works... Thanks for your help!

What does NOT work in CM7 for Epic::
GPS
Camera
Multimedia Messaging
Bluetooth In-Call (Hands-Free Profile)
WiMax 4G (This is absolute LAST priority, DON'T ASK ABOUT IT)
I don't develop personally, but I make it a habit to try and understand what's going on, and as such I rearrange and personalize ROMs to my liking, and subsequently carefully test them to maximize performance and battery. I like to share my understanding and insight to help alleviate the task from developers who already do so much work in an effort to pay them back!
Yes, I am aware of the current limitations of this incarnation of CM7, it seems as though right now, cell coverage radio is going a bit insane (toggle rapidly airplane mode) with my setup. I am currenly looking into how to get CW3 on it.
Hey I managed to gain access to a windows laptop, installed odin on it, and attempted to reflash with what I imagine are the stock files, but it's failed twice...
Which files should I be using? My phone WAS on DK18, but all i'm looking for now is to get it working in a stock way, then I can venture out again....
Any help?
Edit: Odin said it failed, but it seems like some stuff took, it will boot to the samsung screen, do the sprint yellow boxy thing with music, go to the glowing S, it'll pulsate for a while, then it goes to a black screen sat for a good while., Now when I reboot, it hangs at the first samsung screen again..
Does it look like I just used the wrong files, or was it a usb issue?
I'm a bit perplexed...
I'm a noob as well. You need to watch qbking77 on you tube. He goes through the exact steps and exactly what files to use if using odin in one of his videos. The links are all there as well. I have hade my epic a week and have done about everything in his videos to help me understand what I am doing.

As the title states today i got my sgs s II. impressed with it so far but i want to start flashing new roms. Came from the sgs 4g i am familiar with cwm, odin and superoneclick but looking at roms here i see that there are ICS roms that have special requirements as to flashing (read the megamix install instructions) and i don't want to brick or otherwise mess this phone up. if anyone can guide in the right direction where to start and the differences in the roms on this forum id really appreciate it.
The ICS ROM's are not completely stable yet, they are based off the Skyrocket ICS leak. But it's the same as your old phone, Odin CWM then flash a rom. No need to root if you're going to flash a custom rom, they are already rooted. The only requirement for ICS is flashing the super wipe zip from the dev section before flashing the rom. Just make sure you follow instructions in the OP word for word, and you will be fine. But READ READ READ 3x before jumping in.

It's hard to brick. Use Odin, flash something with root, and use CWM beyond that. Generally, ROM features are listed in the threads where they're posted. You might start out by reading through some threads.
thx for the info i was a little confused about the ics was looking thru and the tuesday rom looks very nice. again thank you for the info and for putting up with a noob.
I agree with what everyone has said.
For what it's worth:
Eugene's Macnut is my daily driver. I try them all, and I am always going back to it. Fantastic battery life, great performance, and everything just works. The custom driver is fantastic--already highly undervolted.
If you don't care about wi-fi calling, his CM7 is fantastic.
If you want ICS, they are all basically the same right now, with a few tweaks / mods / themeing here or there.
Yaldak's vanilla update will be the next ICS that I try (none are quite stable enough for me yet...and no wifi calling) whenever he releases it.
Also--if you haven't already, just CWM via Odin, and you can be done. I never even booted into the stock version when I got the phone.
any working links for the cwm? looking thru posts cant find one that will open.

I recently rooted and started flashing my GS2 as well as my GF's G2x. For the GS2, I've tried Tuesday's BluRay. It's really nice..very fast and smooth, great looking themes for it too, but I found it was a bit too limited, and eventually had to load another launcher and reconfigure some of the sounds. I also really missed the time on the status bar (M&S has since put out a patch that added the clock to one of the themes, unfortunately it wasn't the theme I preferred). I ran with that for a couple days and have since flashed Foxstar. I really like Foxstar's included utilities and tools, but it was a bit laggy coming out of the lockscreen and scrolling through pages. I've read that loading faux's kernel over the included synergy helps a lot. Will probably do that in a bit and run with foxstar for a few days to test out performance and battery life. But I'm getting itchy fingers and might try one of the CM7 ROMs or Juggernaut soon. I'm making Nandroids of each install I've done (as well as the stock), and eventually I'll pick one to run as a daily driver.
I recommend Eugene's next CM7 update the R3. I've been running with it since R1 and it's superb.
With the massive customizations it's hard to go back to GB or the alpha like ICS's out there. Although the latter have great qualities.
does the cm7 have the tv out function via the mhl cable?
Since you're new here. The few times a gs2 was bricked is because of:
1. flash a rom different galaxy s2 rom as in the international, the att, sprint, old vibrant. We can flash the skyrocket roms though.
2. Using odin to flash a stock rom incorrectly. i.e. using a pit file, battery falls out etc
3. the Phone just DIES OUT. Believe it or not, some people's phone just shuts off and won't turn on again.
But other than that, our phone is pretty hard to brick if you're not stupid.
T989 is a beast and is very hard to brick if you have a lil bit of root knowledge...everything ive learned has been thru google , trial and error and the bad ass devs here at xda..if u search for it you will find the answers to all your questions

Sell it and get a phone with better development. This ones is horrific imho, but you know what they say about opinions. 8)
