The Now app that you can get on Samsung phones is excellent. It's so much better than the HTC Hub. The Now app has a better weather function and is faster and cleaner than the Hub. It has an excellent news function as well. It also has a stocks list.
The best part of the Now app for me was that I could easily remove it If you are not in the US and are not interested in stocks it is worthless. Can't customize it.

No live tile was a deal breaker for me.
the HTC hub just released an update that improved speed and stability but at least I don't have to worry about my phone bricking during updates or my updates being withheld/delayed.
My Omnia updated without issue and very early. Also Samsung updated the firmware to fix the updating issues so people need to stop trolling about Samsung devices. They make the best all-around WP7 phones.

Personally I don't much care for Samsung phones. They tend to be plastic'y and cheaply built. But the "Now" app, which is what this thread is about...aka: not Samsung...does more than my HTC's Hub. I always liked the hub in the past. Now that I've fully realized the "Now" app, I was astounded that some people, I remember way in the past, smack-talked it in favor of the Hub.
I love it. I pretty much just use it for the Stocks, but its a pretty nice app overall. Nice layout, design ect.

Clearly you've never seen an Omnia 7.
But unfortunately, as has been said, the Now app is pretty worthless if you're not in the US.
Thanks for the tip about this app, i am not a big fan of the HTC Hub on my HD7. I will definitely have to give this a try.

It's not a revolutionary app by any means. But it is better than the Hub and the Weather displays much faster. It includes a news screen and stocks screen. The Hub only has Weather and featured apps. What I am impressed by with it is that it provides me with several functions that I can eliminate elsewhere on the main screen of my Focus and it displays faster than the Hub.
I uninstalled my 'Now' app within the first one hour of unboxing.. makes the whole front screen look cheap.. we need more wide tile apps.. plz

Yeah, I read about that bit of misfortune Samsung decided to perpetrate on unsuspecting buyers. When I bought my Focus, I had no clue there was different revisions of the phone out. When I read about that, I was thankful mine is a 1.3. That type of stuff is another reason I don't warm up to Samsung and why I would choose a different brand if given an alternative.

I've got one and have had ZERO problems with it. it's an awesome phone. My largest gripe is you can accidentally push the back or bing button and jumps you out of a game or app, but you get used to it. The other thing is why did they put the charge jack on the top???!!! When your in the car with the charge cable, it's a s s backwards and very annoying!!!
But like I said, other than that it's a solid phone and the Mango OS I have on it is really really nice...

Installed it yesterday on my HD2 and it's amazingly fast! I don't have to wait for anything to load (except 3rd-party apps, games and web).
It's safe to say, Windows Phone is now on top! (too bad not on top of marketshare )
Mango sucks, it's not out .
Mango does f'ing rocks, and I keep finding more stuff every day. I can't wait for manufacturer and carrier updates so the update is complete. I want my vvm, hotspot, and my LG apps to work again.

Coming Tuesday.. I am throwing Mango release party this weekend.
I think it sux. After almost a year they manage to implant a custom ringtones, and fail (no custom ringtones for alerts). Guess they need to hire another one for that.
They change volume bar with numbers (wee what a change), but still no separate volume for phone and device.
But I must say, its good for facebook junkies.

Wait a minute, you're saying that a whole operating system sucks because of two honestly very minor issues?
After watching the presentation on ICS, I want ICS on this phone, more so in hopes that it will fix the issues we are having with "Android OS" which are causing extremely high CPU usage stats. The problem is, there is going to be a layer of TouchWiz on top of ICS, so here is to hoping our awesome developers can give us an awesome ROM(s), and we can get CM soon!
Plus the new voice input seems really good (only reason it messed up in the presentation in the beginning was because he started talking too early).
Not really interested in the Nexus Prime (Galaxy Nexus), but looking forward to how well our cameras operate with that new interface. I believe once we get ICS on our phones, ours will be a much better phone than the Nexus (other the instant updates on Nexus, of course).
AOSP would be nice. I wonder if ICS has rotational transition animation. Even though it seems like a useless feature when it comes to functionality. I want it!

I know we have many different hardware configurations out there in the Android world and some people argue that's this fragmentation is the main reason we wait so long for updates. I believe the major reason is the many different skins or gui these manufacturers either plague or bless us with is causing our update woes.

And imagine if they had someone like Steve Jobs present for them. People might actually realize how good Android is. We get it but the average user doesn't and they need to be told this is the best thing around because we are telling you so.
Hello there,
I have been following and reading these forums for years but today I finally decided to post something. After reading about the ban on Nexus devices, I went online today very early and bought my own. I'm frankly very tired of the way Microsoft has been dealing with its WPhone platform and after reading what Jelly Bean brings to the table for Android, I'm hooked up!
As this is going to be my first Android phone I would appreciate any comments or insights you guys could provide me with.
Thanks for your time!

As a brand new android / nexus owner the main thing you need to know is that Apple is the devil and to hate everything about them
I'm also in the same boat. I'm not sure whether to get either the HTC One X, LG Optimus 4X HD or the Galaxy Nexus. I dont care about updates as I use custom roms. Or shall I wait for a quad core Nexus phone?

When you first get the phone. Unlock the bootloader (search the forums on how to do it). After that, enjoy the phone and look around the Play Store for apps that you may like. There are a lot of apps to look around from.
The reasoning behind unlocking the bootloader (first thing) is because if you DO decide to root and flash custom ROMs after you already set your phone up. You can back up your apps / data whereas if you want to root/flash... you'll have to unlock bootloader (which will wipe everything).

I was really pissed yesterday night after knowing about the injunction on the Galaxy Nexus phones!
Also, when it comes to my previous experience with MS/Windows Phone 7 this is what I have to say:
ATT and their update schedule sucks. Do yourself a favor and never buy a phone from them, especially if it's Android or Wp7. You will never see timely or meaningful updates for your phone.
Lack of Swype. Swype is a very sweet technology that we don't get to enjoy in the Wp7 platform. I mean, symbian and meego have swype! Wp7 don't have anything but a very crappy kb and and ****ty autocorrect. I was also very tired of dealing with that.
Lack of over the air updates. Seriously MS? I still have to connect my phone to zune and update that way? Not to mention that can only happen if ATT thinks I, as a customer, deserve to update my phone.
Lack of interesting/appealing apps. We all know how this is in Wp7.
Lack of interesting in keeping legacy devices updated. Which honestly happens with android as well, with the difference being that if you have an android phone, you have the chance of flashing a new rom/forcing the updates as the code is open source. Go try that with a Wp7 and see if it's that easy... NOT!
No custom ring tones still, really... after more than two years? Give me a goddamn break!
And franky, there's more, a lot more, but those are things I can think of right away.

I was excited about quad core phones and so on until I read what Intel had to say on android not being optimized to deal with dual/quad cores. The hardware is there, ready to ship with multiple cores. However, according to intel (they have been developing their own android phones), android as it is right now isn't optimized to take advantage of multiple cores. Maybe in the next major release of the OS that won't be an issue anymore, but as it is right now the software isn't ripe enough to do that. So, in my case, I decided to save a few bucks and buy the galaxy nexus for 350 from google. Maybe in the future when the software is up to par with the hardware I will consider a quad core android phone.
If you want to unlock the bootloader go and find the thread about toolkit 7,it is verkligen easy to use.

No one is really quite sure. Some people argue that the Nexus 7 was the "nexus device of the year" while others say that there will be multiple nexii being released in Q4 of this year (each from different manufacturers). So to sum up... nobody really knows for sure! But, Google has a history of releasing one Nexus phone a year, and so companies tend to follow their previous trends. Now whether it'll have a new or updated OS (4.2, 5.0) is a whole 'nother story...

@weeo: Galaxy Nexus isn't outdated in any form or shape. People may criticize that it's outdated because of core numbers.
But honestly... who needs a Quad Core? Is it nice to have? yeah... is it a necessity? not really.
Jelly Bean.... what's the first phone getting it? Galaxy Nexus... Is it really outdated? In hardware perspective, it may be somewhat outdated but not to the extent that it has NO hardware that it can't compete with other devices.
Software wise... Galaxy Nexus is more than relevant and it will stay this way for the next two years.

Uhh, you have to keep in mind Intel is trying to sell their (at present, single-core) chips. They're not exactly an unbiased observer here.
The Nexus is still a good choice, however. It's now pretty cheap (though may not remain that way once the injunction sets in) and it'll be the first to get jellybean and project butter.

But, uh, I have to disagree with the other person here. The GN is a last-generation phone (not just in cores, but in stuff like camera, GPU) and, as such, it can be called "somewhat outdated".

And to answer Techsavvy2's question, in Verizon at least, the GS5 4.4.4 update fixed many Bluetooth issues that were present in 4.4.2. But I agree with Tech's point in that new for new's sake is a little pointless.

At least it is good news
Hopefully as stated earlier in the thread it holds true for AT&T. Maybe they will realize with such a big OS release that people will want it sooner than later.
I have a feeling AT&T is going to delay it for at least a month while it figures out what features they want to disable to add in their own bloated, pay to use version of it !

It's brilliant that Samsung keeps updating the A series but honestly (probably besides some security patches) there is nothing interesting in this update
I guess that for pictures and videos pro users already use filmic Pro, open camera or port of Google camera
The rest is just gimmick.

I guess that for pictures and videos pro users already use filmic Pro, open camera or port of Google camera
The rest is just gimmick.

What does it do?
I replace all stock Launchers with Nova. Will OneUI 2.1 make sense for me?

You can search online for the difference between the two. I really want Audio Share so I can share audio with friends

Everytime I'm here I always see a distasteful post from you. If you're not happy with your device and support it comes with it then do yourself a favor, sell it and buy something else.
Thanks.

ROTFL [emoji28]
Where did you see me saying that I'm not happy with my phone? I actually think it's brilliant (especially the battery) while costs a fraction of S20 [emoji3]
But at the same time I'm not gonna praise all software changes it gets if I don't like it. That's called being a fanboy, buddy.
You seem not to understand what I say. But you can always ask [emoji6]

Same goes for you towards any forum. He never said he don't like the phone, only commenting the update, wich is helpful in general or specific.

No it doesn't, more than once I've seen this user say this or that about the phone or the apps in it. Not talking about this thread either.

What? Prove it then. With links to my posts. I honestly can't recall complaining about this phone. No prove means you're just talking rubbish.
I did not complain about the apps, but I admit I complained about system apps not allowed to be removed (those additional from Samsung). But dude this is always the case with all phones besides android one
I will also complain about Samsung not letting the camera to be fully used by 3rd party apps (I can't get 60 fps videos, and when I set 120 fps, the phone records in 3 fps). Do you buddy think it's fair to purchase any thing and not be able to use it however the hell you want? Jeese... But again, very popular practice.
And now - hang on and sit down - other people complain about the latest system update not me - them. I've put on hold the update as I generally don't update anything.

If you put updates don't hold, don't complain when something else doesn't work as intended.

Dude, you don't even ready what I write or you constantly have problems understanding
What I point out is not due to software issues. It is all intended and common amongst manufacturers. Most can be fixed by AOSP (which we don't have) except the camera limitations. That's entirely Samsung.
Anyway, stop talking to me. Seems like you have no clue...

Well you are right in one way ?
I've seen you complain about system apps and the Google framework in it's entirety, but yeah. Obviously I don't have a clue right? ?
You want an Android One device, buy one. Simple as that.

As for updates , my UK unlocked A71 is still on April 1 update , I know the A 71 will get updates in a " big " lump.. every quarter, but I would prefer incremental updates, rather than a huge update .. if it ever gets here .. i want to to keep stock , romed before ... done it .. hence keep stock

No it was fab , got want I wanted etc.. but I've been there done that, it was good, but took time. hence now just want " out of the box" with nova launcher. It's even helped me get full java games, apps, etc on my Chromebook .
That's why I'm still here, as they say " once you tweak you can never turn back!!"
Being new to Samsung and how they update their devices, how long does it usually take for the update to hit all channels/versions of the phone? I have the Panama version of the A71 and have not yet received the update. Just curious as to what to expect so I don't have to spam the update button throughout the day.
