Where next?

I'm in a quandary and I wanted to find out where people are going after the Desire. For me it is pretty much the perfect phone, this is down to build quality and developer support.
I don't know if i can move to a phone that doesn't have as much support, what will i do without all my flashing?!
Anyway, the SGSII is plastic and the Sensation isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination (it isn't the 'new Desire' in terms of changing the game).
What are others upgrading to? I've got 6 months on my contract, do i buy myself out and upgrade or wait it out?
All thoughts very welcome!

Now that the bootloader is unlocked im going with the sensation but a lot of people seem to be going with the galaxy s II

i would wait to see what the nexus 3 will be like, it is coming out with ice cream sandwhich and is proberly going to have a tegra 3 processor and google phones always have loads of development.

What's the lead time on that? Are we expecting it this year? That will also depend on manufacturer for me too... can't deal with plastic phones!

This might be some sort of sacrilege but I would to see an Android device with the same design ethos as the iPhone 4.
HTC Sensation looks closest but I'm done with Sense.
Galaxy S2 would edge it for me at the moment though.

it is expected in time for xmas or in january it is also going to be made by htc or lg, google hasn't desided yet

A friend of mine has the HTC Incredible S and it's really nice, the only problem is, it still has the locked bootloader and I'm not sure how easy rooting it would be.

With locked bootloader it is practical impossible to install a custom rom.

The lg optimus speed p990 seems to be good, too.
If i were you, i would buy the sgsII or wait until the next htc-phone with as of now again unlocked bootloader releases and buy this one.

Still Worth It?

So now after a few months on the market. Is this phone still worth purchasing or is there something significantly better coming along within 3 months that will blow this out of the water. If the products that are coming out are comparable I still see this as a viable option for an upgrade from the Thunderbolt (or am I insane?).
Anyways, hope to get some feedback regarding this to assist. Thanks!

Kind of hard to answer since most new phones are announced at mobile world congress which is next month. As of this second on Verizon there is nothing better. You can argue the rezound is equal with each having pros and cons but nothing is in the pipeline yet.

This Mobile world congress convention that you mentioned. The phones that are going to be announced here will still have release dates that are months away from the actual event right? So best case those 'new' phones will be coming out ~5-6 months from now or are they actually being released to the public at this event?
If the resound is the only comparable phone, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus does indeed still sound way better (for me at least).

it depends on what your looking for, better hardware specs, pure android with great support with updates, or themed android with a lack of updates. Not saying those phones announced at CES are crappy, but if you want a phone that is guaranteed dev support/android updates then i'd recommend the Nexus. Yea they may have other phones that may beat it in hardware specs, but will those phones get the updates and the support that the nexus is and will be getting??? I seriously doubt it, not saying that they won't get support at all, but if u want the best experience of android, i'd recommend the nexus, i had the Epic 4g Touch(Galaxy S II) and i liked it, but i LOVE my nexus, it does everything i need it to, no complaints here, and the battery is great i get right at 2 days on one charge, u should get it, u won't regret it

I am on the verge of pulling the pin and just getting it. Is the amount of development activity similar to what it was with the Nexus One (my last nexus phone)? I remember crack flashing nightly with all the goodies that were available. I took a looksey in the development forum (I will be with Verizon if I get it) and saw a few good things in there.
Are any of you guys currently running a custom ROM and if so, has the custom ROM development still in its infancy or is there some decent work being put out by all the developers (donations to custom developers are a part of the cost of the phone in my book )?

If I was going to buy a phone today I would still get the Galaxy Nexus. 6 Months to a year from now will of course be a different story. If you live in the United States we always seem to wait forever for the best stuff. EU seems to be ahead of us when it comes to the latest and greatest phones.

Sure, for about 9 months. Then the GN gets Jellybean, or Jello, or whatever. Meanwhile the GS3 gets a "Value Pack" which is subsequently pulled before it's even done because Samsung wants to sell the GS4 to you. Vote with your wallet, and vote for hardware which will get 2 years of support. Even if you flash, having up-to-date drivers makes it a lot easier to build custom ROM's.

Since you aren't living in the United States. MWC will announce Galaxy S3 and the U.S. will get it like 8 months later because each carrier wants something to "woo" their customers with exclusive features and all these small little variants of the Galaxy S3.
By the time that all comes out, it'll be launched with a old OS and Nexus 4 will be announced.
I stay committed to only Nexus devices simply because they will last longer. Especially with a great development community.
Sometimes, the community makes the phone.

I Would Never Have Bought This Phone....

I know that's a dramatic title, but it's true. This was my first Android phone, purchased 14 months ago. I quickly found xda, rooted and got s-off. I have enjoyed this community, the developers have been amazing. I have stuck mostly with AOSP ROMs but have played with at least 20 different ones off and on. I love the open source community, and the ability to tweak everything with my phone. That said, my contract will be up in the spring, and when looking at a new phone there are only two options:
the new iPhone - I know that is traitorous, and I probably won't go there (I've invested too much in this OS and in paid apps), but iPhone's ecosystem has so much reliability. There is only a few phone models out there, so you know what you're going to get. When iOS updates, everyone has access to it. It just works. It is less customizable out of the box, but once jailbroken gives many of the same opportunities as Android
a "pure Google" phone (ie Nexus) - this is realistically where I am headed, and where I "hope" the whole Android community is headed. Steve Jobs, love him or hate him, revolutionized the way a cell phone was sold when he made the deal with AT&T. I hope that Google can do the same. I love everything about my HTC Incredible 2, the construction and hardware and functionality are great, but that cannot make up for the fact that ICS was released on October 11, 2011. That's TEN MONTHS AGO! Do you understand what that means in tech time? The average contract length is 1 or two years. That means if you purchased this phone on a one year contract in October, you will possibly never get the ICS update intended for your phone. That is ridiculous. You can point blame wherever you want, but the bottom line is that it's unacceptable. Now if you have a "pure Google" phone you get all those updates immediately, and you also get a group of hungry developers that gather to the phone just because of that. Now, before I hear "just download Aerovan's CM9 it works great" - I have, and it does for the most part, but that's not the point. We should have had fully functioning ICS for 10 months now, and we should have had a fully functioning Jelly Bean for one month. Instead, we may get ICS before Christmas.
tl;dr - buy a "pure Google" phone, the delay in OS updates is not worth getting any other phone (even if it has better "x")

Actually, the current JB update for the GN has terrible battery. ICS 6-8 hours, JB 4-6 hours.
I have 50% of battery at the end of the day with moderate use with my dinc 2

To open: every thing just works. Android just works, wp7&8 just works ios just works. this "just works" nonsense is part of apples campaign. My dinc2 just worked out of the box I chose to make it better at the cost of adding some instability.
The only phone that I know of that didn't work and no amount of dev work can fix was my old dx2.
Here's the truth in the matter ios gives you and every owner the same experience while with android you are given an experience but you can also choose to make your own. Ios is out dated. IPhone hardware is outdated, Apple knows this that's why they sue and patent some of the most retarded things in the name of anti-competitive spirit.
Why go backwards in tech when you can move forward. Go for pure Google. Then you can have a great phone with the latest tech, open software with timely ota updates.
But its your money. Choose to be an isheep or choose to be a Herder its your call.

The x2 was horrible, it had great potential but "motorizon" stepped in, I'm amazed Dragonzkiller is still working in it, for that I give him props.

Yes, the Incredible2 is an amazing phone.
I would say this is the best phone that can handle any OS till now (Android).
but as I am in India, I am not able to use this phone at its best due to not having proper ICS ROM which support Indian CDMA network.
I tried UKB 1.1x, it works great with GSM, but it did not detect CDMA UIM card...
other than this, this phone is amazing....... and beautifull.....

@OP. I agree option 2 makes most sense and is what I wish to do in the future as well. However, DON'T go with Verizon for your next Nexus phone... Apparently VZW is still delaying the JB update for Verizon's GNex... Appalling news and a slap on the face for the whole Nexus brand... If Asus can release JB on an non-nexus tablet (read TF300) faster than it can come on a nexus phone, what the hell should we do now!? VZW is like a god damn bully who is just plain mocking us and taunting us... It is not even trying to embrace technology and attempts to live in the old days... Screw them. I suppose it makes sense to go for a Nexus device on a GSM network. The way it is MEANT to be! :/ so AT&T (or T-mobile) it is...

Aren't a vast majority of the carriers GSM (excepting Reliance and 1 by Tata I think)?

Yes, I think I will only purchase a phone from the Google Play store. When my contract expires I don't want to be locked up in another two year deal.

There isn't evidence that they are purposely doing it, but what litetaker says is true. Thus the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is not a "pure Google" phone as advertised.

Now the fact of the matter is Gnexes on Verizon are yet to receive the OTA for JB which was released 41 days ago. Clearly, it is the carrier's incompetence that is causing the delay though it is indeed doubtful whether VZW is doing it purposely or just out of pure incompetence... Whatever it is, it is taking way too long FOR a Nexus device. It is down right laughable and I am not happy about it...
On the other hand, several reports online ([1], [2]) suggest that JB OTA is already out on AT&T and other GSM based carriers... :/
That is simply uncool by VZW AND Sprint, might I add... I dunno what is up with CDMA versions of Gnex. But it is just uncool!

Just curious why a lot of people seem to prefer these devices over devices like Motorola Razr, etc? Is because these devices are updated more frequently than most? I've read that somewhere, but don't remember where. Thanks.

Nexus devices are bloat free (no motoblur, touchwiz, sense skins on top - just pure Android)
They (like you said) are the first to get updates to new Android releases
They are much simpler to unlock/root/theme/modify etc than others
The development of roms, kernels mods etc is the largest of any other Android phone probably and is always evolving
Pretty much why I chose a Nexus - I knew I would be able to get pretty comprehensive help with any aspect of it on these and other forums

Thanks for your response; it's much appreciated. Since I've only ever used Moto Android devices, I'm not very familiar with the offerings by Nexus. Does Samsung actually make the Nexus, but Google owns Nexus?

Google owns the Nexus brand and uses it to showcase their latest software offerings as well as to set a general trend of direction it envisions for Android as a whole - It contracts out the actual hardware manufacture to it's partners like HTC (Nexus One), Samsung (Nexus S & GNex) and ASUS (Nexus 7 tablet) etc.

No not any Nexus device. The GSM Nexus that you can buy from Google directly gets updates before any other device. The carrier locked (CDMA) Verizon and Sprint Nexi got the latest updates 2-3 months after the GSM model did, still they are ahead of most phones for updates.

Updated frequently, for longer, with great stock software.
If you're into rooting, its trivially easy.
If you're into ROMs, it'll be one of (if not the) best supported device for a long time to come.

Honestly, I was a huge HTC fanatic up until I first played with the Gnex. After an hour of playing with my new Gnex I was hooked, after a week of tweaking it I decided I will not own any other device but a Nexus branded one from this point on. I hated samsung because of how plastic and toylike their phones seemed to be but after owning my Gnex I changed my mind. My last phone (Inc2) had scratches on the screen within a week and dust under the screen within a month. I'm going on 3 months with my Gnex and keep it naked in the same pocked as my car keys sometimes with not a single tiny cosmetic ding.
Anyway, got a little off the subject, honestly the only way I will ever hesitate in the future from buying a nexus device is if crappy motorola is making it. I still love HTC and I definitely have a newfound love for Samsung after owning my Gnex and playing with the Note 2 and the GS3.
Bottomline, once you own a google flagship phone nothing else really compares.

im sure we will. gnex is not that old. if not an official update, many custom roms will appear thanks to our devoted and skilled devs.

Well not that old cos It's still a good device that provides great user experience. I agree but when we're talking about such fast developing technology and update policy two years means a lot!
As far as I remember Google hasn't officially announced devices to get KLP yet so we can just speculate. But I wouldn't be much surprised if we didn't get it.

Gnex was released october 2011 iirc, that makes about 1,5 years, by the time android 5.0 comes the Gnex will almost be around for 2 years, yes.

Non-google phones of that age have been supported. There's more reason to thingk the GNex will be included than not.

Didn't Google promise to support nexus devices over at least a set month period? Around the time ICS came out I want to say they said 18 months, or maybe more. Even if they don't, we will see ROMS worked up for them. And if you look at the old nexus devices, updates didn't happen due to hardware limitation. Unless they got some new feature that demands a hardware feature be on the phone and we don't have it, I doubt they will stop updating us.

In terms of CPU/GPU GNEX is unfortunately not even close to 2012 flagships (not to mention 2013 beasts). I am not saying that our TiOMAP won't be able to handle KLP but it can be used as an excuse. I hope not.

If your correct that means that KLP couldn't run on most mid end devices.

I am not saying anything. I've no idea about KLP's requirements. No idea what google decides either. We're all just speculating here. I was basically trying to figure out a possible excuse not to give us KLP. And CPU/GPU is GNexus' weakest side comparing to 2012 and newer handsets. That's all.
* In 2012 HTC One S with S4 Krait was also considered a mid end device.

It may or may not come out for our devices, technology advances pretty quickly, if we get it, good, if not, too bad, Google did not owe us anything.
