First off I would like to mention that I am a complete newb to Motorola.
I am trying to mod a defy for my GF. I rooted and flashed CWM and then I tried to install CM7 2.3.4.
My problem is the device is stuck at the boot screen. I know sometimes it takes a while once you flash a new rom, but this is definitely something else.
I am the idiot who breezed through the faq without reading it properly....
I think the issue is I left USB debugging on when I flashed the rom. Now I am trying to flash the 2.2 SBF file and it doesnt seem to want to work.
I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me?
HEy follow my guide on techofweb and never use defy 2nd init 1.5 or above................u must use 1.4 version to make it work......

I got everything back to stock, and now I am following your guide. I was using the wrong version on the bootloader.

I'm a noob at Android hacking and wanted to root my evo After a few questions to one of my friends, he pointed me towards unrevoked3. Now am stuckand don't now how to unlock the NAND and its driving me crazy. I want to be able to use roms such as damage control. Please help. Im compleatly lost.
I would ask your friend, don't think many here use unrevoked, we used the complete method from toast.
Also read through the posts in the Dev wiki.
I just rooted and unlocked last night...had a few issues. Should be around most of the evening. Where are you and what did you do?
Last night I used that unrEVOked3.1 software and then moved on to unlocking. You will need to ADB installed to do it the way I did it. This is a component of the Andoroid SDK. (You can find that from the google android site.) It is complicated and I got through it because I am old enough to have actually worked in DOS back when there were dinosaurs.
It's not impossible, there are instructions out there...but it will take effort. Hate to point you away from xda...'cause LOTs of good work here...but I followed the unlockr.com tutorial for unlocking nand.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
There were a couple issues where su couldn't find the sdcard. I even did lists and saw it, but the commands failed at start. Took a mix of unplugging usb and replugging and mounting and just charging....not sure what fixed it...LOL. But I got the commands to run eventually.

You can use Rom Manager app to install CM7. In fact Rom Manager is included in CM7 Rom. Honestly I think Rom Manager was made mostly for CM Roms. Make sure you wipe data, cache and davlik before going to CM from another Rom. I never flash through Rom Manager app and always flash manually from recovery, but a lot of people do flash through Rom Manager. Good Luck.
Also just to clarify(someone correct me if I'm wrong),
I think if you used the unrevoked3 app from this thread Unrevoked to root your EVO that it also nand unlocks it too. The thread doesn't state it, but the app has been updated to work with the latest hboot, so it should work on all Evo's right now. I could be wrong, but I have used the latest Unrevoked to root all of the Evo's that I have rooted and have never had any problems with backups, restores and flashing Rom's.
and i got titanium back up for my apps but not sure how to use it i got idea of hot to use it and how can tell if my nand is unlocked or not

power off your phone then go into bootloader using power+vol. down..if you see s-off at the top the youre unlocked
If you are s-off, but still having problems with some root apps, you need to install busybox. You can do this from the "problems?" button in the bottom right of the overview screen in Titanium Backup. Then choose "get busybox".

Can anyone give me some pointers please ?
My kids have had Defys (green lense) since last christmas. Rooted them straight away but have never tried to flash them.
So ... rooted ... green lense .... running 2.1 (!) .....
Looking to flash them a gingerbread ROM. now ive done this loads on my HTC Desire and Asus Transformer so im ok with the principle ... but loads of the ROMs for the Defy are suggesting other methods rather than flash the zip via CWM. Some are saying I need to go to Froyo first ?!
Can anyone recommend an easy (stable ish) Gingerbread ROM to flash from the current state of these Defys ??
Cheers.
cm7 2.3.5 very stable and fast

cheers ... but is that going to mean a flash to froyo first ? is there a preferred froyo rom to flash to first ??
unfortunately yes no way to get around it
the first time i tried i was very confused too. then i found out you don't have to worry about cwm, it's included in the 2nd init. all you need after rooting is to install 2nd init, reboot into recovery and do your tricks from there. it is recommended to wipe data/cache and dalvik cache first before choosing "select zip from sd" to install your preferred rom.
and yes, you need to goto froyo first. gingerbread apparently is not compatiple to eclair from my understanding. the recommended froyo rom to use is Nordic, but i just update to my carrier's official stock froyo (telstra, Australia). worked perfectly.
you can follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798
there's only one thing missing from that instruction, basebandswitcher. read up about it and make sure you select the correct baseband for your carrier. otherwise you might get weak or no cell signal.
there are better and simpler instructions elsewhere if you google for it, but i guess i'm not supposed to refer anything outside this forum
just as a note, beware that if you flash a froyo sbf, yo will most likely not going to be able to restore it to 2.1 even with another SBF ( it's a thing mototola is doing now, called e-fuse )
just be informed of that.
cheers guys. got so used to flashing Desire and now Transformer it seems like its a whole new world on the Defy

[GUIDE] All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide
Hello,
Before i start this, let me say i SPENT 2-3 Hours already trying to find out everything there is to Rooting, Xperia Play, R800at, etc. I really did do my exploring and I just give up. Im on the brink of breaking out a gun and shooting myself lol.
Okay, heres the problem. 2 Months ago Alejandrissimo Unlocked my bootloader. Today, I just rooted it using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299729 he gave me recently.
Now, im stuck. It says I have to install CyanogenMod 7 after the rooting process but idk how? Idk if my phone is GSM or CDMA.
BTW, I have a Xperia Play R800at, 2.3.3.
Recently Rooted, and unlocked bootloader by Alejandrissimo.
So, what now? Do i install this CyanogenMod 7 with GSM or the CDMA? Is there an updated CyanogenMod 7? How do i get rid of the bloatware, overclock my phone, etc? What are these roms you flash and what not? Please Help, I am in seek of it and just need a good guide or some instructions that can help me out.
Thanks.

Ok. So. With an unlocked bootloader you do not need root to install cyanogenmod...
If you go to the dev section, freexperia (fxp) 105 is what you're looking for. Since you have the R800at, you've got a gsm phone.
I'm not sure for gsm what does work on the R800at, and what doesn't...

Did you install the kernel first?
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk

From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128216 (FXP CyanogenMod Thread)
3rd Post a little bit below the download link (emphasis mine )
HOWTO FLASH ROM
to flash cm7 rom you have to take 3 steps (after unpacking the 7z archive)
step 1 - copy update.zip to sdcard
step 2 - flash new kernel (always use the kernel provided in CM7 / it is incompatible with stock ROM)
ON PC - run fastboot flash boot boot.img (an black window will open and will stay open untill kernel is flashed)
ON PHONE - put phone in fastboot mode (power off then press lower right key and plug usb cable) and phone LED will light BLUE
step 3 - when phone is booting (first 5 seconds) press volume key several times to enter recovery and choose apply update from sdcard
WARNING - if you used another rom (stock or custom) you have to wipe data or device will not boot
hello there, how' re you today?
first i want to say i'm glad to become a member of this community, im always read threads on this site
well, well, i'm here today because i have many, may questions
i'm now actually with the Nitro HD (P930) with stock ICS, a few days ago can finally root it, and installed rom manager, installed CWM, but when i reboot it on restart in recovery my phone makes this:
secure booting error cause boot certification verify
so i have to remove the battery and turn it back, i want to try it on with some custom roms and i been reading about, but dont know yet if i need to do the Unbricking Solution to do so or what
thanks in advance
oh!!! and by the way, my GF have a chinesse phone: (the star b930) so i want to know if there is anything i can do with it (install a custom recovery, install a diferent rom) the phone is already root (im sorry about the double answer it is because i dont know where i can ask with this one)
for your first question , you cant flash custom recovery on stock ics becouse boot loader is locked
for unbricking your phone and flashing cwm use this link and follow the steps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784709
i was afraid to read it hehehe, but anyway, thanks a lot, maybe some day i'll do it (i dont know why i cant right now )

Hey guys,
I've never installed a custom rom and I was thinking of getting Cyanogen so I rooted my phone and got 6.xxxxx (forgot the number but the most recent one) CWM recovery but the recovery didn't work and it said "Long time no see". I did some research and I figured out that I need to unbrick my phone in able for CWM to function properly. Can someone just confirm and perhaps briefly explain why i need to do this. It seems hard and dangerous and if I could I would prefer to avoid doing it to get a custom rom. If I do need to do it, is the stickied unbricking guide up to date and working?
On another note, I have unlocked my phone (using Rogers on a Bell phone). Will installing a custom rom do anything to stop that from working?
Thanks!

Yes you are correct you need to use the unbricking guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044645
The reason for this is LG locked the boot loader for ICS as a result it can only be installed through gingerbread. If you have Windows 7 and not xp you could get errors during the kdz install portion. If that's the case use this to install the kdz file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2149211
Then return to hereric's guide to complete the process. Good luck.
In regards to your 2nd question it shouldn't. But to be on the safe side it can only be unlocked from a stock ROM so I would install one of the many cwm installable cwm based on v20(x) first. ie. V20c, d, e or f. Then go to any ROM.

Thanks Ok i guess I understand it now, so this whole unbricking is just downgrading your OS.
And I have windows 8 that wasn't an option Anyway i'm in the process of unbricking atm following your instructions i'm currently installing the kdz. I'll let you know how it goes but thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.
