[Q] Regular Flasher but noob to Deft - Help Needed - Defy General

Can anyone give me some pointers please ?
My kids have had Defys (green lense) since last christmas. Rooted them straight away but have never tried to flash them.
So ... rooted ... green lense .... running 2.1 (!) .....
Looking to flash them a gingerbread ROM. now ive done this loads on my HTC Desire and Asus Transformer so im ok with the principle ... but loads of the ROMs for the Defy are suggesting other methods rather than flash the zip via CWM. Some are saying I need to go to Froyo first ?!
Can anyone recommend an easy (stable ish) Gingerbread ROM to flash from the current state of these Defys ??
Cheers.

cheers ... but is that going to mean a flash to froyo first ? is there a preferred froyo rom to flash to first ??

unfortunately yes no way to get around it

the first time i tried i was very confused too. then i found out you don't have to worry about cwm, it's included in the 2nd init. all you need after rooting is to install 2nd init, reboot into recovery and do your tricks from there. it is recommended to wipe data/cache and dalvik cache first before choosing "select zip from sd" to install your preferred rom.
and yes, you need to goto froyo first. gingerbread apparently is not compatiple to eclair from my understanding. the recommended froyo rom to use is Nordic, but i just update to my carrier's official stock froyo (telstra, Australia). worked perfectly.
you can follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798
there's only one thing missing from that instruction, basebandswitcher. read up about it and make sure you select the correct baseband for your carrier. otherwise you might get weak or no cell signal.
there are better and simpler instructions elsewhere if you google for it, but i guess i'm not supposed to refer anything outside this forum

just as a note, beware that if you flash a froyo sbf, yo will most likely not going to be able to restore it to 2.1 even with another SBF ( it's a thing mototola is doing now, called e-fuse )
just be informed of that.

cheers guys. got so used to flashing Desire and now Transformer it seems like its a whole new world on the Defy

[Q] How do I flash a rom using a nandroid backup and a fixed sbf?

I would appreciate it if someone can help, the leaked 2.2 beta that I'm using is extremely buggy and slow, I've lost a few important calls because of this, so I'd like to use an official 2.2 rom.
Thanks,
I would appreciate it too.
well i just did it 2 days ago using method posted on here..will find and post for you..
with the guide i am now using first froya nordic and now cm7 beta 3..which is fantastic
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
just found this as well
but seen as rom manager does not find defy yet i installed clockworkmod from market on it's own.
androidtablets.net/forum/nook-color-technical/6386-how-installing-using-clockworkmod-rom-manager-nandroid-backup-custom-kernels.html
i think that was it
dont take this a gospel though..you own your phone and take full responsibility for it..not me
Since u are on froyo already, install 2nd init. U can find app here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212 .After that u find nand backup of choice, install it form custom recovery, and after that flash fixed sbf made for that rom particulary. Be carefull, u cannot downgrade now since u flashed leaked froyo, u only can upgrade, and keep downgradebility for that particular sbf u currently are on. But at least with fixed sbf u get 2nd init and custom recovery not need to reflash every time u flash new rom or downgrade to old one. I can reccomend 2 roms I used myself: barebones 1.4 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977989 , or 3.4.2_177-005_nordic found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037076 . First one is modded and i can tell u it uses (with right vsel settings) very small ammount of battery per day, and second one is motorola blureless one, but with motolauncher if u like it. It is good and stable, but uses a little bit more battery.

What does 2nd init do? I remember reading in a thread that it wasn't necessary.

[Q] Possible brick

First off I would like to mention that I am a complete newb to Motorola.
I am trying to mod a defy for my GF. I rooted and flashed CWM and then I tried to install CM7 2.3.4.
My problem is the device is stuck at the boot screen. I know sometimes it takes a while once you flash a new rom, but this is definitely something else.
I am the idiot who breezed through the faq without reading it properly....
I think the issue is I left USB debugging on when I flashed the rom. Now I am trying to flash the 2.2 SBF file and it doesnt seem to want to work.
I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me?
HEy follow my guide on techofweb and never use defy 2nd init 1.5 or above................u must use 1.4 version to make it work......

Just got a defy

I have just bought a defy and want to root it. Im not too keen on Motoblur and want to get rid of it if it is possible! However, I have never rooted a phone in my life. I have noticed that there are a few roms knocking around for this phone.Cyanogenmod and Gingerbread Android 2.3.4. Which is the best one? I will also need an idiot proof tutorial if anyone would be good enough to point me in the right direction. I would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance guys but Im a bit.....

Flashing a custom rom like Cyanogenmod will remove the t-mobile logo at bootup.
Before you start flashing a rom I'd recommend you to first browse some of the threads and to read some tutorials and FAQ's.

I assume I need to root my phone first and foremost? I will use SuperOneClick as this looks quiet easy to do, even for me.
Oops I forgot to add thgat my defy is on 2.51. Will this be a problem??? I want to be sure that I dont screw up my new phone. Cheers
I suggest you go to a stock 2.2.2 via MSU or RSD Lite. For your locale. Try it for a while (- the GB retail is very good). You don't need to root to do that, and it is fairly easy and safe.
You could then try and remove the Blur stuff and some bloat after rooting. Plenty of guidance around. This will increase your familiarity and experience, which you lack by your own admission.
If this doesn't give you what you want, then try a Custom ROM. Note that no 2.3 Custom ROM presently provides a "100%" experience. It may be that you need something they cannot yet deliver... I'm not sure why you desperately need to do this, not having tried 2.2?
Take things one step at a time and don't rush.

I will take your advice. What do I need to do to remove branding and bootlogo? I assume MSU stands for Motorola Software Update. What is RSD lite? How do I use either of them to remove the network branding? I know these questions are probably seem idiotic to you guys as you are the experts but this is my first adroid and I need to start at the beginning so any help with this is very much appreciated.
You have to learn all the basics at the development forum threads before making any changes to your phone.
I suggest you to root your phone, install 2nd Init (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212) and make a full backup before you get the party started.
You can debrand you phone (including the bootlogo) if you install a custom rom.
The questions you've asked are already answered on the forum in a better way than I could do.
So start trying to use the search tools and don't forget to read the forum rules.
I'm a newbie here too, and following these advices I didn't get in trouble yet...
I still suggest, as you are new to Android and phone hacking, that you take small steps and learn about Android before hacking. I'm not sure why you have a branded phone - why not just get a retail one?

It was cheaper than buyiong an unbranded version. Im reading up on it now and I think Im starting to pick things up a little. Android seems to be a lot more complicated than an iphone but Im getting there.................slowely

I made a mistake, the firmware version is 2.2.2. Right where do I start. I think I will debrand it first.
I followed this to debrand:

Everything works fine.
I have now debranded it. RSDLite wouldnt work on my windows 7 desk top through. I followed the debranding tutorial to the letter but my defy wouldnt show up. I used my Vista laptop and it worked first time. It was actually quite easy. I do have another question though. I have debranded my defy and no longer have the t-mobile boot logo on start up. However, when I go into my menu, I do still have t-mobile widgets. How do I get rid of them?? I have tried dragging and dropping them into the waste bin but as soon as I got back into the menu, the widgets have returned. Its not a big issue but I would like to get rid of them if possible. Thanks in advance guys (again)
most probly u flashed a t-mobile sbf..other retail sbf wont show t-mobile widgets..anyways u can remove them with root explorer..its quite easy..

I flashed it with the UK Retail .SBF , version 2.2.2 service flash. Because I was already on 2.2.2. I went for the same version number. Im sure you klnow the one but here is the link.
http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy
Would it do any harm if I went for another version??
no no..2.2.2 is fine...anyways use root explorer to get rid of those crap..
the best way to clean install is to enter Stock Recovery, then do "Wipe data/Factory reset" and "Wipe cache" and then flash an sbf...this will wipe "everything" and will install freshly..

How do you enter stock recovery? Do you mean on the device itself?
Edit............Its ok, Ive susssed it out. I had to press trhe volume keys up and down simultaniously. This stuff is not that difficult to do once you get started and read through everything.

[Q] 2.3question

Hi guys great site. Just a few questions before i try and load 2.3 to my stock 2.2 defy. Can i go back to 2.2 incase i need to send my phone for repair at some point in the future. And what is the best thread to use for instructions and files. I am from the uk and on orange
Thanks

Just one quick question for you: Have you even tried to SEARCH for an answer prior to posting?

Yes, you can downgrade. One thing you have to remember - NEVER EVER flash leaked 2.3 Motorola ROMs straight to your phone. You have to use fixed releases with Nandroid backup that you restore via Clockwork and special SBF to flash immediately afterward.
Cyanogenmod and MIUI (most popular 2.3 ROMs) are pretty much safe.
Hi thanks for your reply, and just an update on this ,
I am now running 2.3.4 fine with no problems only bit i dont quite understand is the overclocking values mentiond in the guide i followd, but i suppose there is no need to overclockk for my use at this time maybe i will learn it in the future, i have installd all the software to do it.

Assuming you are coming from 2.3 (Eg CM7), the gist:
While starting up the phone press and hold volume up to go into bootloader mode.
Connect to computer via USB and start RSD Lite (version 4.9) and flash your 2.2 SBF (Look at sticky on dev forum) from which you had originally created the nandroid backup.
Load it up, root, restore nandroid to get back applications and data.
Search dev forum for complete guide.

Maybe your right and i have got mixed up with numbers at moment i am running 2.3.4 but maybe i was running 2.2.2 before, it was definat 2.2 so if .4 is not heard of then i will go with .2 but looking in that thread there is no orange UK version do you know how i get this or is there a diffrent one/version i could use, and is the version information able to be pulld from my nandroid backup.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126907 <-- this version sais it is UK and doesnt mention Carrier specific so guess this is the one to use for me, So to confirm do i follow the same set of instructions as before from here " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1135901 " but change "shadow4.5.1-134nandroid" for my own nandroid backup and "shadow4.5.1-134fixed.sbf" for "FixedSBF_3.4.2-177UK.sbf" from this thread " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126907 " or is the Non-Fixed Full sbf better to use.?
thanks again

Was my flash successful ?

I was using the 3.4.2-164 France ROM and I wanted to get rid of motoblur. Someone advised me to install a custom rom based on nordic.
So I decided to install this custom one (Nordic II edition by iaio72):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040777
So I installed the fixed sbf, deblur 3.4.2_177-005_nordic as specified. I did not do anything else at the moment because something is bothering me. RSD Lite said I successfully installed this fixed SBF (PASSED was written). However, nothing had changed when the phone rebooted. My applications are still here. The phone is still rooted. And the system version number is 34.164.3 Retail FR.
Is this normal? Or did something go wrong?
I've read a similar issue abt defy b4 try wiping n flash again...
Sent from my MB525 using XDA Premium App
if you flash a fixed sbf, you need to install the correct nandroid backup for it, otherwise system and cdt partitions will not be overwritten (these are the codegroups - cg31 and cg39 - missing from a fixed sbf). and your apps are still there because you didnt do a data wipe before flashing, it is strongly recommended to do it before every flashing. heres a thread you should read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
sent from my cm7 defy...
Thanks for your help.
I am under the impression that if I wipe it now, it will cause trouble. Am I right?
Do you think I can simply follow the rest of the steps for NORDIC II and safely install the NORDIC II recovery ?
my advice would be to start over, wipe, flash, nandroid and the rest.
sent from my cm7 defy...
Thanks. I followed your advice and started from the beginning. It's restoring the custom rom right now.
From what I read in your should-be-stickied thread, it is the CG version which prevents from flashing an older ROM. Is the CG version the same for every Froyo ROM? Or is there a difference between 3.4.2 and 3.4.3 ? (I'd like to install the most up to date official blurless ROM but I'd like to be able to switch back to my country official Froyo)
the cg version is the same for all froyo roms, so you can switch between them the way you want. i'd say try cm7 first, its the best rom ive seen so far!
I'm a bit scared of CM7. Its thread is full of bug and malfunction reports. It the most promising ROM around though and I'm really looking forward to the final product. However, the feedback is too frightening at the moment.
Do you think it is safe to use an asian ROM (not chinese) in europe?
dont know, havent really tried, but afaik everybody has the same hardware (mb525) except china (me525), so you could give it a shot! and im using cm7 nightly 110808, and i havent had any problems with it so far!
That's really tempting but I'll wait to see more positive feedback in the official thread. I know that thousands of people are actually using it and love it but I also know that tons of people just mod their phone for the sake of modding it. And I don't do it just for the thrill of it, really.
I tried the asian official ROM. My phone doesn't detect my provider anymore. I guess it was a long call. I just hope I didn't screw something up. I'm downloading the official CEE deblured. I hope I won't have to come back here with a bricked phone.
the asian rom probably uses a different baseband, download defy baseband switcher, and choose the correct baseband, this should solve the problem! The CEE version is also really good, my fathers using it, no bugs so far. on more thing: if you try cm7, and you dont like it, you can always return to stock froyo, you wont lose the downgradeability! so you should definitely give it a shot!
I installed CEE, motoblur is gone and everything works out of the box. I know there are still tons of apps slowing my phone down but I'm done looking for trouble today. I'll keep an eye on CM7, see if they sort things out.
Thanks for the help.
