[Q] Whats the best custom ROM ay the moment? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
Quite new to all this, managed to root and install a new custom ROM on my phone yesterday (took me 8hrs all together)
after alot of reading and help from other members i decided to go for the ARHD ROM.
Is this a good choice? i know alot about computer programing, but Phones are new to me, im enjoying learning about my DHD
is this a good ROM, or are there better I realise that its down to personal preferance, but is this an up to date ROM.
Cheers,
Jamie

There is no best rom.Best rom for one user is maybe the worst for some other.Try couple of custom roms and decide which suits you best.

This is so true.. Just try other roms, and find which one suits your liking..

Also is there anyway to back up my home screen, and other screens settings with the widgets etc and all my app settings so i can just recover them back onto any new rom i install. it takes me hours to do this ater a factory reset or installing a new rom?
Cheers.

Use titanium back up for apps and settings. Never back up system data. Widgets can't be backed up unless the launcher has a backup setting.

I do not think it is better idea to back up your home/screen settings to use it across different ROMs. There is high chance that you will experience weird issues (every ROMs devs request to make a clean install if coming from other ROMs, importing backups would not make it clean anymore ).
As for the ROM, i think ARHD is a clever choice (i have settled to it after trying out all of the ROMs but RCMIX) if you want sense (or no-sense).

What if I asked you about the fastest ROM? I'm currently using LeeDroid bu I noticed that an OLDER Nexus One is much faster regarding the system. My only advantage is SuperFast IO and a bit faster 3D. CPU, even though it's set to 1,8 GHz Smoothass, is only half as efficient as the older 800MHz CPU in Nexus One.I read somewhere that it's a matter of picking a proper ROM, so which one would you suggest to me if I asked only for speed and responsiveness, and maybe battery life. Any Sense ROM is obviously out, but the problem is that I never used any other custom ROM. I would also like to retain my 2 way recording ability.

I used many roms, for me,
the best sense 2.1 rom is ARHD
best sense 3 rom is Virtuous Unity
ARHD is flawless and fast
VU has sense 3 but it has minor issues like Dolby is missing in music app. and its kernel doesnt have 2way recording support...
But i am stiil using VU with Lee s kernel

thanks, although Sense is not crucial, what I want is that my phone works as fast as possible and e'thing works as it should. I'm thinking about CM7 latest 7.1.0 RC1. People say camera is crappy but it can be changed.

I'd say give MIUI a try. It's really fast (faster then cm7 imo) and beautyful if you find the right theme in their theme manager
Furthermore it has way more features than cm7 but it isn't bloated like sense

Only drawback is it makes your phone look and behave like an iPhone, I'd recommend Hydr0G3nMOD it's cm7 based but with some trimming and tweaking and fly's and it's a massive ~72mb! download so that should tell you something about the bloat.

[Q] Which ROM?!?! Totally unable to choose...

Hi all,
I'm a newbie of the Androids world. (and also in HTCs one).
I'm coming from the world of Nokia hacking and modding and here, with all the mods changed, I feel a bit (just not to say totally) lost.
I bought this week a new HTC Desire, I feel very happy and proud of my choice, the AMOLED screen is something superlative.
But, coming to my problem:
I discovered that to join the wifi hotspot in my university i need to set the proxy and other stuff which i can do only with root privilege and other apps, so I decided that is just arrived the time to f**k up the guarantee and install a rom one time for all, at the beginning so i must not reinstall many apps, settings and other stuffs.
I'm searching for a ROM which is the most possible similar to the original Sense FroYo that is now installed on the phone. But at the moment for me I think it's to hard to be able to recognize the differences between two ROMs, so...
Which is better for me to choose in the huge list of post #1 of the "Desire Index - Everything is here" thread?
Obviously it must have the root capabilities, ap2sd and..? (i'm totally ignorant in which are the starter-important mod)
thx for you help and sorry for my poor english..

LeeDroid! But I'm biased, been using it a couple of months and it rocks, full Sense ROM, A2SD+ (need an ext partition on your SD card for this), themeable, overclockable if you want. I've tried other but nothing has persuaded me to switch.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
this one is all stock but for the root access, but if you root, why just go for the same as you got?
Invest a few bucks in titanium backup or mybackup pro and rom manager and try some of the top roms like AuraxTSense, LeeDroid, both with Sense as you know it, or Miui and OpenDesire which run alternative launchers.
There is never just flash one rom and be happy once you have set yor foot in here
By far the greatest of all is LeeDorid.Lots of good features and a lot of updates !
Modaco Custom ROM
Should be as good as Leedroid or even better in my opinion ;-)

MIUI 10.0.29 is honest to god stunning, its fast, overclockable, excellent batterylife and the whole UI is a nice overhaul. Its clean and everything has been designed for use, the system menu has been re-organized for the better making it easier and clearer to get to all options. They have also done things like add settings to the notification panel, added kintetic scrolling (so things bounce) FM radio re-skinned all major apps. The lockscreen has also been changed to a custom lockscreen which has quick access to phone and messaging, barring that i'd suggest trying DeFrost, he does good builds of CyanogenMod, or Cyanogen Mod 6.1 rc1. Not a huge fan of CM6, its seems as slow as sense roms on my phone. OD and DeFrost dont seem to suffer this issue however.
Mr favourite non-Miui rom is OpenDesire, theyr quick and dont come with bloatware r crap pre-installed, but Adam_g has been absent lately.
For 'sense' builds try leeDroid (imo bloated with tonnes of crap), Modaco Custom Rom (www.desire.modaco.com) or Alex-V sense rom. Theres also AuraxTSense but its hideous. Imo for a good sense rom try a modaco rom with a sense kernel such as vorkKernel, or 'HAVS 2.6.32 for Sense Roms V5' by richardtrip

CyanogenMOD is one of the fastest ROM and the one with the most fixes and updates! Dont say bad things about CyanogenMOD Rom´s !! Without him this Community would be nothing!
Sense or AOSP? Minimalist or Feature-Packed? Depends on your personal needs...
You could start with a rooted stock, after a week try Leedroid/RCmixHD/MIUI and next week CM6.
Or you just get DSIXDA's Kitchen, learn some ADB and Shell Stuff and make your own ROM.
Go for cyanogen to get the best android experience...
This post might fit better in the Desire Q and A and not the Development section mate
this is not a post for the development section, in future please reasd the forum rules before posting
I've tried Leedroid (SENSE) and DeFrost (NON-SENSE).
Both are really good but after some experience I've decided to stick with non sense ROMs. They are by far faster but that eventually comes at the price of some higher battery drain.
DeFrost FTW !
You must be thinking, i'll find the best and most popular one and i wont be flashing again in the next few months/weeks. You're wrong. You come here, you'll be flashing all roms as the clocks ticking.
I have tried all except MIUI and Defrost so far. and am sticking on OpenDesire for the longest AOSP rom and Modaco R8 for the sense ROM.
But my personal choice;
CyanogenMod : Be it Nightly, stable or RC, i love it to the core! Best AOSP rom ever. I tried them all and they are super fast! The reason i didnt use it currently because i waited for the stable 6.1. Hehe~~ Love the nightlies before RC1 got released though.
OpenDesire : The dev(AdamG) used to have minor updates almost everyday but now, very2 long time before an update, meaning it is at the most stable version now. and it is true cuz i didnt believe it at first( I used to use the older versions and it still have some bugs) but now it is the best for me. Best after CM(cant deny CM, they are the master here).
LeeDroid : Well i've tried all Sense roms already, and this seems the most stable and fast(though i found out it become slower over time, my fault for installing so many apps maybe). I used to love NeXTSense by Neo, but when it got changed to AuraxtSense, i jumped to Lee.
I'm sorry for posting in the wrong section, but i wasn't sure where to post in the different areas.
Well, you named different roms, but which are the differences (explained to a nearly-noob)?
I'm searching for something with the same interface of the normale roms, but purified from all the (in)utilities. In fact a clean and fast rom, in which THEN i decide what i like to install and personalize...
If I can make a representation, a roms with no apps which are not native (facebook, twitter, opera and all the others), but with only the things that you nedd as a basis for all the rest.
Lol the op will still have a hard time deciding. XD
The best way for you to choose which Rom to use is to download and test each one individually. Hope you get ORD btw

I'd like to test them all, but at the moment i'm under exams and for next 5 weeks don't have enough time to test anything.
so I was searching for a direct suggestion explaining what will change and what will not change..
If you want a rooted rom similar to your current one, why don't you just use unrevoked to root your current rom?

MIUI! or Defrost!
If you want speed, then go for Cyanogenmod 6.1, DeFroST or OpenDesire. If you want a nice UI, too, you have to put a theme on it or use a Rom like RCMixHD, AuraxTSense or smth. like that.
a-ehm...are there ROMs that haven't been named yet? LOL

easy, test it while you go. thats what i did.
Here's my timeline(some are examples);
I'm meeting my girlfriend tomorrow, lets bring LeeDroid! and yeah i did it, i manage to test all features and stability while I'm in the bus travelling from my place to her(took 8 hours in the bus). i screwed up while playing around though, the phone didnt boot so i had to restore nandroid of my modaco R8 back...haha~~
This weekend is examination time(yeah seriously no joke), so last week i flashed OpenDesire. Now i'm still using it. done exploring it in a day though, and keeping it longer than i imagined since i love it.
Presentation week, damn it this week was very busy and i tried Cyanogenmod Nightly 149. Love it. but no themes for it so i flashes CM 6.0.2...but aah too many gallery crash for me so i'm back to OpenDesire.
Well those are my moments, you'll be done exploring in 2 days at max for a rom though. Be sure to test all primary function first before you begin to like them. I did all in a day only. shouldnt be too hard.

what ROM am i looking for?

so ive been thinking about rooting my phone. im gettign tired of seeing the "low disk space" icons and sometimes the lag is just annoying...
i just dont know what rom im looking for.
ive been looking at cyanogen and thinking about going with that but ive been reading theres problems with the wifi and other minor stuff. so i was hoping you guys could help me out.
im looking for a ROM thats fast, stable, and still syncs up with google cal and contacts and gmail and gtasks and etc. but i also want it to be reliable in terms of other things such as the alarm clock, bluetooth, wifi, gps and whatnot. i also want it to be compatible with google voice... also, i would like longer battery life while keeping adequate performance up. so many underclock while my screen is off and overclock while its on? (if there is such an option)
also, another question i had was if i flashed a vanilla ROM on, would i lose all my sense widgets? and if i do, is it hard to find good looking widgets without paying any money?
thanks.
You can backup your previous roms so if you don't like one you flashed you can go back. And Widgets are usually hard to find. I'd suggest cm6.1 or virtuous for a rom and either an invisiblek or Chad kernel that will give you great performance and good battery life. I hope that helps

Yes, and no. You will lose all sense widgets, but you can find good free versions. I would start with Fancy Widget for clock.
My Rom Recommendation:
I am running CM 6.1 with B-SCM Splash of Red theme
and Ziggy471's latest kernel. But, a word of warning:
NEVER overclock past 1.19GHz on the Ziggy kernels. Most support going up to 1228000, but I've NEVER seen this work. No harm will be done usually (a brief stall followed by a reboot), but if you set this and then check Set On Boot, THEN you're in trouble.
Also always nandroid before flashing. Backups are your best friend.

O yeah. Also, a pointer about installing kernels and themes
0 Nandroid
1 Wipe Data / Factory Reset
2 Install ROM
3 Reboot, complete setup
4 Reboot to recovery, install kernel
5 Reboot, verify touch, WiFi
6 Reboot to Recovery, install theme (and Droid2 Keyboard, Bootanimations, etc.)
7 DONE! Exhale deeply.

no, the radio is something you can change to improve your signal and battery life. you need to have S-OFF (ie unrevoked forever) to do this through HBOOT. I wouldn't recommended it if you're not advanced because this is one of the few ways you could brick your phone. If you do decide to change it, make sure you do your research and don't rush it.
Although I'm using a source CM rom, source never really works 100% for our phones. Sense roms are the most compatible and best way to go for compatibility reasons. Try out "Uber Z" or the virtuous ROMs.
Here are some TIPS!

The best ASOP roms that i have tried are Cyanogenmod 6.1 and Skyraider Athena 1.2. These roms are both available in the ROM manager app. Both of the roms are very fast with almost no bugs, Although they will not give you the best battery life. With that being said you can still change the kernel as long it is an ASOP kernel.
As far as sense roms i like Virtuous rom and almost any Desire Z rom. The rom i am using ATM is Uber Z. This is a very nice and stable rom.
If you want something that looks totaly different than android i would go with MIUI. This is a great rom with great battery life. keep in mind it is sort of based off of apple's IOS.

[Q] Which ROM would you recommend

Hey, hope there aren't a lot of threads with the same question but i didn't find one.
I will root my Desire the next days and then want to update to a custom rom.
There are some things i really need:
1. A2SD (that i can store any apps on the SD card)
2. Stable (NO bugs)
3. Sense (maybe normal sense, but might be also a port from the desire HD/Z)
4. Fast-Browser WITH Flash
5. (not so important) a Rom which is not overloaded and themed, i like the way sense looks, with all it's fonts and pictures.
Would ne great if someone could tell my what rom he would suggest for me and my needs.
Thanks
iNsertCoin HD/Z Port 1.9.5
in the video the menu seems to be a bit laggy. and the equalizer doesnt work. not that i need it but i dont like roms where something doesnt work... why would you recommend this to me?

One more voice for "iNsertCoin HD/Z Port". I am still using older version "1.8f".. No FCs, very nice and smooth. No lags for me.
Cool sense Cool Z v6 (i can't get V7 to work properly(its still in beta))
The HD roms from my pov, the fonts too small for my old eyes

I have been using the REMIxHD and it all seems to work very well, very fluid lag free flash works standard browser so might give dolphin ago. But then again when I got the LG GT540 on 2.1 thought it was good at the time.
I am using standard leedroid 2.3d. Working great for me and fits into your criteria.

The phone runs an older verison of the ROM in the video, which was laggy. EQ does not work, desire lacks of hardware.
I think you should go with a 2.2 Froyo ROM such as LeeDroid and not the HD/Z ports or Gingerbread.
I used to have RCMIXHD 3.0 A2SD and had a great experience with it. Surprisingly fast.
If Sense is not a priority for you, I'd recommend Oxygen or MIUI XJ, way smoother than any Sense HD port.
I used to love sense too. Sense is lovely.
These days though I realise that it's just eye candy - free yourself and get rid of it.
Go for Redux 1.0.2 (Gingerbread) which is the fastest smoothest ROM I've used (and I've used a lot).
Launcherpro has some god damn accurate Sense style widgets built in, and you can easily mod its dock to look the same as the sense dock, so you can have the sense look and feel, whilst still being able to use all the free space that sense usually takes up
This is what I'm currently running and I'm really happy with it.

Actually i think LeeDroid is overloaded. The pictures i've seen are full with custom logos, fonts, etc, etc.
I Just want the original sense/sense HD style.
What ROM would you recommend? What about the Rooted Stock Roms?
And another question: Does slowing down the CPU when screen ist of (what is possible in some ROM's) really help for more battery life? I'm not really convinced and afraid of destroying anything on my loved HTC Desire..

There is nothing like that in LeeDroid. i think you are getting a wallpaper
confused with the os. or maybe you saw a boot animation and got it
confused either way it is "stock" sense with tweaks and it runs very
nicely. I swear by it anyway and put it on all my friends desires.
I went to HD roms but they either start running slow or take
too long to open things like the music player, this all bugged me so i
ditched it. I got the feeling that it wasnt designed for this hardware.
It might be good by now but who knows.
With leedroid i set the cpu scaling to "smartass" so it dips when nothing
is happening or the screens off and rises back to the top when in use.
"ondemand" does the same i believe but each governor has its advantages.
This all helps battery life but i cant say how much because ive been
running it for so long i dont notice.
Leedroid also has an intergrated fix for the charge issue with sense roms where
the battery is never at 100% when you take it off charge.
Try StarBurst lite is what you are looking for,
its Stock Sense with simple D2Ext. Kernel is LeeDroid 2.3 from snq - major Battery saver.

Im using coolexe hd version 7,got a2sd sending apps to memory card. Batterys good, pretty much the same, but this is dependant on the amount of apps and things you get id say, The hd sense is much better in my opinion, more customization. Htc.com onboard but only some things work, lovely rom though id take that one a go,insertcoins good also, ive tried aurax also.all good.try them all mate, once you know the score test as many as u want!
A simple, stable gingerbread would be Oxygen 2.0.1.
A feature rich, fully customiseable alternative is the Cyanogen ROM (link in signature).
Choose whatever suits your needs.
I found this topic that is what I want to know. I hope it is not wrong to revive this thread.
I would like to root my Desire soon and update it to a custom rom.
There are some things i need:
1. Stable (NO MAJOR bugs -calls, sms, wi-fi, camera and basic functions should be working with no problems)
2. Android 2.3.4 or 2.3.5
3. A2SD (so i can store any apps on the SD card)
Would like to have, but not a must: Only if it works without laggs and buggs.
4. Sense 3.0 or 3.5 (for example like one from the desire HD)
I have htc Desire with official 2.3.3 Android (that I instaled from htc website) and is not rooted yet. I want to root and instal one of the newest android on my phone.
Therefore I would ask for some help, to help me choose the right one for me. I'm considering one of those:

Would be great if someone could tell me which rom would you suggest for me. One of those 3 or perhaps one I misslooked.
I'm sorry for my spelling mistakes...
I'm grateful for any help or suggestion I might get.
Just installed Runnymede AIO V4.0 Special Edition, runs really smooth.
Before i switched to CM7, i used Insert coin and it was really really fast and was stable only reason i switched to CM7 was due to better themes and more settings
This is all really helpful, thanks so much to all you guys for doing this!!
My quick question on this, any of the roms that pretty much emulate a standard experience, e.g. the Starburst, plus app2sd functionality, any of these also support ad hoc wifi?
I believe there are ways of custom installing it, though are there (simple) roms out there which include it already?

First ROM ever ... Absolution?

I want to flash my first ROM ever and ive been trying to read a bit and decide on the most appropriate ROM for me. I want something fast and with a good battery life and from what Ive been reading Absolution seems to offer both these things really well. One thing I dont think im willing to give up right now however is the ability to sync facebook images and information onto my contacts. Do Absolution and other Cyanogen based ROMS allow us to do that? Any one with any other suggestions that you think may be easier for me to handle for a first ROM? Also, is there a way for me to backup my current stock rooted ROM so I go back to it in case I dont like CM?
If you want cyanogenmod based ROMs, for me blackICE ROM is the best by far.
If you want to stick to official releases for our DHD, Android Revolution or wait for LeeDroiD to update his ROM
If your want sense 3.5, in my opinion SmartDroiD is my ROM of choice,it really is the best ROM I've ever used, but there is ER3BUS ROM and RcMiX Runny. Currently I'm on ER3BUS as I wanted to test it and I've ended up loosing my USB cable so I'm stuck atm but I will be returning to SmartDroiD soon as I can.

Lol, just thinking out of the box here.why not just download the ROM on your phones browser and then flash it? I've had a desire for 2 years and think out of the 1000 times I've flashed, only 3-5 of those roms was put on there from my computer..

Yea, when you first install a custom ROM after making your choice, obviously you will have clockwordmod recovery on the phone. From here you can do backups (referred to as nandroid backups) you can also initiate this from ROM manager.
Good luck intrepid Modder.
Also my recommendations are
Sense - Android Revolution HD. It's stock Sense look and feel with good battery life and amazing support, practically 24hour.
AOSP - CM7 - Again amazing support and a great experience. It can link your FB profile pics, but don't expect and decent resolution.
Bleeding Edge - LC ICS Beta 4.5 - Great if you want to try the new flavour of Android but really not for the new modder.
Thanks a lot for the help guys. Knowing that I can back up my stock rom is particularly comforting. Im hoping il have enough time this weekend to get around to doing this. By then Il make sure to look around for some videos of each of those ROMs in order to better choose my first
I feel that Absolution and Blackice are roughly on par with each other, and both are excellent. I'm very curious about Wilkyyy's reasoning...
If your only serious criteria are speed and battery life, the Oxygen 2.3.2 port can't be beaten IMHO. It has far fewer "options" than the former two ROMs though, and there is no CM7-style theming. If you use an alternate launcher like Go, though, then this isn't really an issue or even very relevant.

That's possibly one of the funniest things I have read on here for a while
I actually am using golauncher right now and am loving it. In that case you would recomend the oxygen ROM?

Everyone will tell you what they think is the best rom out there. It is all a matter of opinion and taste. I would suggest watching the threads and see which ones are up to date with features that are appealing to you and try them each out for a few days/hours/minutes etc until you settle into one that makes you happy. There are tons of quality roms and many that are inactive as far as development too. Just be sure to back up your go to or stock rom before experimenting.
i would say virtuous affinity-v1.48.0 its fast and dont use much battery
i think you can use mybackup pro to backup your stock rom
but i think you need to root it first
Don't think twice, perfect ROM for DHD is Android Revolution HD™ 6.3.1.

How's that, chief? You can use launcher themes to change the look of your phone interface, if you're really "into" that kind of thing. Yeah, sure, your settings menu won't change, but if you're gonna lose sleep over that, then your problems run much deeper in my opinion.
Another alternative for Oxygen is the kitchen, which has already been done by at least one user.

I think you should try a whole bunch of them. Absolution is awesome IMHO.

Android Revolution and Absolution are my two favorites... Can't go wrong with either and you get a mix of flavors, Sense (ARHD) and CM7 based (Absolution). I randomly switch between these two but Absolution has more development and updates happening than does ARHD.
thanks i tried absolution ... amazing but the one true downfall has been horrible wifi ... will try a new radio and see if that fixes things though

ARHD vs. InsertCoin vs. ViperX vs. Renovate

Hey guys
Currently I got MIUI installed on the incredible sexy HOX but want to change in hope to get better battery life and a more stable device.
Seems like I want to go with a sense-based ROM (the 4 mentioned in the title). I read through their changelog but can't really differentiate them....
so whats the difference between ARHD and InsertCoin?
ViperX seems to have some neat tweaks and mods/themes..... and Renovate is more or less a AOSP looking sense-rom... but how well do they perform on battery life and smoothness?

Have u tried maximus 3.0 I have tried the per. Version and it is faaaaaaaaast with battery life improvement
ARHD : everything is stock nothing fancy
ViperX: if u want tweaks and customization there you have it.
IC : didn't try this ROM sorry but all I know is that it is like viper x but less tweaks
Advice: flash viperX + ROM cleaner + foux6m

Thanks for your reply! I guess it also comes down which kernel I'm going to use... and foux6m might just be the winner!
AR-HD:
Most stable for me, everything works, it looks very solid, clean and nice, just like it was intended to look.
Battery is really great, it just works and that's what this ROM is supposed to do.
When I'm tired of other ROMs or get any problems with others this is what I flash back to, guaranteed to just work and be stable, if you need a reliable daily driver, I recommend you use this.
ViperX:
First of all, no offense to developers/designers but I really do hate the themed red looking icons and whatnot, and all of those other themed stuff but if you just use stock themes it's a great ROM with great tweaks that would suit the ROM to your needs, I've used this for a week but I noticed the battery wasn't really compared to AR-HD, if you depend on things like volume controls, tweaking the keyboard, removing the arrows or editing the status bar and assigning actions to the buttons I recommend this.
InsertCoin:
Used InsertCoin for a few days, I thought there would a nice amount of tweaks but I was disappointed, no offense to developers but with all those updates it seems like this ROM is kind of forced, nothing bad though.
Renovate:
First ROM I've flashed on my One X, the hybrid Sense/Senseless doesn't work for me though, if you really want something fast, I suggest you get an AOSP ROM.
After trial, must be ARHD
I was on ARHD, then moved to ViperX because of all the customization options. Didn’t notice much a of a difference in battery life. ARHD is good, but as far as customization goes, its no better than stock sense, unless you want to manually find various different mods and flash them through CWM. As for theming in ViperX, you don't have to use their color schemes and icons, I use the stock sense look (visually there is absolutely no difference).
I can fullly recommend ARHD :good:
ARHD will be coming with suite tools tweaks....might not be to the level of customizing like Viper X but still the best of both worlds if you ask me....
Viper rom is good but to bloated with all the tweaks....running it at the moment and i have to say it lags....not a lot but lags still were ARHD is buttery smooth...so i would say wait for the new version of ARHD mate

Thanks for the hint about the upcoming update with the tweaks. That was the one reason why I might had slipped ARHD... it did not offer many customization/tweaks options.
Now I just have to find a suitable kernel, probably going to try faux-kernel
This message was created by the Mars rover Curiosity using a pre-alpha version of the SGS4
All Sense ROMs have the same battery life, I don't know who said that you can improve battery life but surely not by using Sense ROMs, they have all the same battery life, it only depends on your usage (and the kernel you use)
I changed to Viper X then went back to Insert Coin
Viper X has more tweaks and features than any rom i've seen. Only thing that bothered me is was it was not as smooth as some of the other roms
I went back to Insert Coin, it's the smoothest and most bug-free sense ROM i've used, also battery life seems slightly better than Viper X. Not as many tweaks but I hardly used any of the Viper tweaks anyway
I had the same dilema, tried them all even no-sense custom roms but now im back on official MIUI 2.8.17, for me by far best looking, performing and battery friendly. Also has better tweaks, theming options, and built-in security. Don't go for non official MIUI i had some major issues with few of them. Maybe they fixed them all but they lost my trust. And every friday new update

Interesting... so the new release 2.8.17 is a lot better? I used RD_MIUI version... and always had some issues with it.... like chinese fonts and battery drains or the annoying LBE-Guard...
Maybe I should let MIUI one more chance by installing the official-non tweaked version. I always thought that the tweaked version of like RD would boost significantly the performance and battery life of the device...
ARHD
I've been using ARHD since rooting my device and to be honest I didnt see any difference in battery life until I downloaded the final version of 6.3.1 with core droid suite tools... Remarkable difference from other test versions.
I'm using ViperX and a lot of the tweaks come in very handy. As far as battery life goes, I easily get 20 hours out of my device with no less than 4 hours of display time. This is with regular usage (whats app messages, some phone calls, Viber texting, taking pictures, pissing around on Flipboard, etc.).
I have not tried any other room but that's because I have not found a reason to switch to another one other than just to find out what they're like and once I get motivated enough, I will probably try the other ones
I guess my advice is to try them all out for at least a few battery cycles in order to see their full battery potential.
Whatever floats your boat, my man. There are plenty of ROMs and I'm sure you'll find one that you'll fall in love with.
ARHD has been the best for me so far. Quick, smooth, stable.

What PhoenixFx said. I started out with Charmeleon (same team that made Viper) and was rather happy. Then updated to ViperX that i kept for over almost 2 months. Earlier this month I tried AR-HD 9.1, and currently running InsertCoin 9.2.0
First off, all roms are fast. You wont really notice any real difference between them as long as use same kernel. A difference of 2% in benchmarks is hardly noticeable in real world . Same goes for battery. It has more to do with kernel and settings than anything in roms.
Viper X is great rom. Its what (imo) a custom rom should be all about. OTA updates, tons of customizations, very stable. Its like stock when you want to or goes completely mad with red-theme (which i personally didnt like much). One big cudos here is the ability to adjust screen auto-brightness to lower values than default, much lower. That usually gave me a few hours extra at night.
Problem with ARHD is that it is just too stock. And with that in mind it becomes hard at times to see the point of having a custom rom (and losing OTA update options) so why not just go with stock rom? Thats what I was left with after about 10 days of using it. It was great as being first out with 2.17 base but after a couple days ViperX and IC also updated to same base.
InsertCoin is my current rom. Its not bad but I frankly dont see the point of it. To me, its like ViperX but lite.. minus OTA ability and too many updates that force full wipe twice a week. And it has a REALLY ANNOYING bootup sound, wtf is up with that?! Stable, for most part. But today i got stuck at lockscreen without any option to move the ring.. it got solved tho.
So here are my thoughts. I like ViperX because it is most different of stock sense roms. It lets me do lot of cool things right off the bat without ever going into recovery and flashing stuff manually.
Personally I'm back with stock for now which seems to be just as quick as the custom roms, and in some instances actually smoother. I think sometimes too many tweaks and add ons slow the phone down.

I'd recommend InsertCoin too if what you want is just a clean and fast Sense ROM. I love it, and don't really mind that it's not full of a lot of tweaks and hacks.
And there's only an update that needs a full wipe with InsertCoin when the dev says it needs a full wipe. The last update that needed a full wipe was 9.3.0 last week, and that was only if you wanted the pt_BR language adding. Otherwise before that, the last update that did actually need a full wipe was 7.0 when he updated to the 2.05 base over 2 months ago.

I prefer insertcoin because I want to keep a stock sense look and feel, I wanted to try ARHD but got a bit baffled with all the different mods available, you have to flash separately. Insertcoin makes is easy with the aroma installer and you can easily enable/disable tweaks and mods you don't want.
Also there are frequent updates so when small bugs are found, they are quickly fixed and contrary to what asestar writes, you don't have to wipe. I haven't wiped since the 1.29 based roms (v6.x)
