what ROM am i looking for? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so ive been thinking about rooting my phone. im gettign tired of seeing the "low disk space" icons and sometimes the lag is just annoying...
i just dont know what rom im looking for.
ive been looking at cyanogen and thinking about going with that but ive been reading theres problems with the wifi and other minor stuff. so i was hoping you guys could help me out.
im looking for a ROM thats fast, stable, and still syncs up with google cal and contacts and gmail and gtasks and etc. but i also want it to be reliable in terms of other things such as the alarm clock, bluetooth, wifi, gps and whatnot. i also want it to be compatible with google voice... also, i would like longer battery life while keeping adequate performance up. so many underclock while my screen is off and overclock while its on? (if there is such an option)
also, another question i had was if i flashed a vanilla ROM on, would i lose all my sense widgets? and if i do, is it hard to find good looking widgets without paying any money?
thanks.

You can backup your previous roms so if you don't like one you flashed you can go back. And Widgets are usually hard to find. I'd suggest cm6.1 or virtuous for a rom and either an invisiblek or Chad kernel that will give you great performance and good battery life. I hope that helps

Yes, and no. You will lose all sense widgets, but you can find good free versions. I would start with Fancy Widget for clock.
My Rom Recommendation:
I am running CM 6.1 with B-SCM Splash of Red theme
and Ziggy471's latest kernel. But, a word of warning:
NEVER overclock past 1.19GHz on the Ziggy kernels. Most support going up to 1228000, but I've NEVER seen this work. No harm will be done usually (a brief stall followed by a reboot), but if you set this and then check Set On Boot, THEN you're in trouble.

Also always nandroid before flashing. Backups are your best friend.

O yeah. Also, a pointer about installing kernels and themes
0 Nandroid
1 Wipe Data / Factory Reset
2 Install ROM
3 Reboot, complete setup
4 Reboot to recovery, install kernel
5 Reboot, verify touch, WiFi
6 Reboot to Recovery, install theme (and Droid2 Keyboard, Bootanimations, etc.)
7 DONE! Exhale deeply.

does radio=kernel?

no, the radio is something you can change to improve your signal and battery life. you need to have S-OFF (ie unrevoked forever) to do this through HBOOT. I wouldn't recommended it if you're not advanced because this is one of the few ways you could brick your phone. If you do decide to change it, make sure you do your research and don't rush it.
Although I'm using a source CM rom, source never really works 100% for our phones. Sense roms are the most compatible and best way to go for compatibility reasons. Try out "Uber Z" or the virtuous ROMs.

Here are some TIPS!

The best ASOP roms that i have tried are Cyanogenmod 6.1 and Skyraider Athena 1.2. These roms are both available in the ROM manager app. Both of the roms are very fast with almost no bugs, Although they will not give you the best battery life. With that being said you can still change the kernel as long it is an ASOP kernel.
As far as sense roms i like Virtuous rom and almost any Desire Z rom. The rom i am using ATM is Uber Z. This is a very nice and stable rom.
If you want something that looks totaly different than android i would go with MIUI. This is a great rom with great battery life. keep in mind it is sort of based off of apple's IOS.

feel gives the best performance and best battery life? There are so many to choose from and I hate flashing one, setting all my crap back up and flashing another. I am on Baked Snacks 1.7 now, as of 11pm lastnight. So far it's nice. Not much diff from 1.5 I was on. I like SenseUI, so I want roms with it.
I hear good things about CM6, but it sounds complicated to install.
I'm running Stock De-odexed right now but I working on my own based off the new OTA. For me, CM6 wasn't hard to install - all I had to do was flash it with ClockworkMod and it worked OotB.
Well, if you want SenseUI, I wouldn't go with CM6 since it's more of an AOSP rom. Check out Fresh 3.2, that's as Sense as it can get with really great battery life (IMHO), on a stock "unreleased" kernel. I've been running Fresh roms since the beginning and still loving it.

CM6 is probably the fastest, not sure about battery life. CM6 is not sense and its also not complicated to install. You just need to flash the google apps as well as the CM6 rom. You can do them both at the same time then reboot. No big deal. However CM6 has no sense and thus can be pretty diffrent and raw feeling at first. If you like sense and you want to try CM6 try out launcher pro with CM6 I hear they got some great sense like widgets, plus you can get some sense like widgets on the market. Other good options are Damage Control and Fresh both are great roms with plenty of options. Baked snacks is good though too so really its hard to say whats the best. It really does come down to prefrence.
Personaly I run CM6 and I use ADW launcher. Its fast, and battery life is great. The options in CM6 are awesome and the options with ADW launcher are awesome as well. However if you go with CM6 you are going to want to play with the settings, it will help you get to know the rom and setting it up will really allow you to apricaite it.
Also I dont use a task kill and I dont recomened using one. However, I have heard good things about juice defender and people are starting to swear by it for battery life. Personaly I get a full day plus depending on usage, so I dont use it. I just make sure to charge my phone before I wake up.
CM6 + Juice Defender + Ultimate Juice is where I keep landing. I've tried several roms, but that combo works best for me. Fast, stable, and I get 22 - 30 hours out of my battery depending on usage.
Yes, CM is lacking 4g and HDMI out, not a big deal for me. The benefits FAAAAAARRRRR outweigh those two things.
Fresh 3.2, everything works
Good info, guys. I have been considering Fresh 3.2...I have been reading that thread quite a bit.
Do you have to flash the kernel separately from the rom on 3.2??

Every rom haas it's own kernel, some come with modded custom kernels, others are just stock. As long as you make sure it's compatible with the rom you are using you can always flash a custom kernel later.
Some guy told me earlier that the first 10% of the EVO battery drains away quick, which mine does. You don't start juding battery like until 90%. Anyone else heard this?
I have tried several roms. cm6 is nice but too many issues right now ie 4g, hdmi, mms broken.
I finally found a good rom; check it out.
[ROM] VaelPak v2.0 (9/6/10) -NonSense -[HTC#7][BFS][OC][UV][FPSU] -3.28.651.1 OTA
This rom you can choose sense or aosp apps and 3 launchers which awd launcher is the only real choice. If you choose awd you might want to change the settings to scroll the apps vertical. And of course this being a htc rom it has the stock bluetooth stack.
I'm using the v2.0 with Kings BFS8 Kernel (9/6/10) -

Vaelpak is a good balance between sense and aosp. I use Launcherpro.

Pro's and Con's of custom roms

Can anybody provide some pro's and con's to using custom roms like LeeDroid etc.
I am not sure i want to use a custom rom or stick to a stock rom.
Pro: Speed (OCs, removed bloatware)
Customisability
A2SD
Root
Deodexed
Cool power menu
Cons: none, unless you can't get your phone's original RUU
IMO, if you're not sure you need a custom ROM, then you don't

that doesn't make any sense.
Custom ROM vs Stock ROM
It's a sensible theory: you don't need a custom rom if the stock rom provides everything you need. A further consideration to use a custom rom is more frequent updates and, perhaps important, faster updates to new Android versions (and 2.3 is comin' up).
I'm brand spanking new to Roms and Rooting. I was using DeFroST for the first few days. I found with it I was experiencing mms issues and Bluetooth connectivity issues. Moved over to CyanogenMod 6.0.2 and all my issues are now resolved. I have found that you should just experiment with new Roms (after making backups) and find one that suits you.

there is no way that a rooted phone has cons, only con is the risk of bricking while doing it... but even then, just do unrevoked and it should work fine.
pros:
-customize basically everything if you know what you're doing
-better battery life in some cases
-faster, smoother, depending on rom
-apps2sd+, all the free space on your phone as you want!
cons
- some roms dont have sense
- a lot of roms still have glitches with the camera... although the stock one isnt that great either.
- possibility of bricking if you're retarded during the unrevoking process.
I personally have rooted my device to get away from sense. I have found that the RaM is a lot less using a senseless Tom?

I'm also worried about getting custom roms because I.have heard cases about custom roms having force closes with google applications like Gmail and market and also wont work well with some of the games out there.
Is that true?

That can be the case in early releases of 'cutting edge' stuff - usually very quickly worked out though. As you can see in my sig, I'm running a ROM not even designed for my device. First couple of releases were a bit flaky, but this one is rock solid - as good a stock.
I see. What roms you using? I cant see your signature.
Reason for me saying that is because I see popular roms such as opendesire and etc still having problems with it. Like force closes and stuffs like that.

Well, if you can live with a little bit of Sense, then use LeeDroid. So far, my personal favorite. DeFrost was fast and quite stable for me, but the occasional force close wasn't too flattering either.
Okay so i loaded LeeDroid onto my phone. I am not really seeing much benefit over my stock eclair rom.
Nice to have a few new settings which i can customize. But otherwise, maybe i am not such a techie that i am finding any benefit??
I am picking up that the phone stalls between doing some tasks which is a con.

[Q] Whats the best custom ROM ay the moment?

Hi.
Quite new to all this, managed to root and install a new custom ROM on my phone yesterday (took me 8hrs all together)
after alot of reading and help from other members i decided to go for the ARHD ROM.
Is this a good choice? i know alot about computer programing, but Phones are new to me, im enjoying learning about my DHD
is this a good ROM, or are there better I realise that its down to personal preferance, but is this an up to date ROM.
Cheers,
Jamie
There is no best rom.Best rom for one user is maybe the worst for some other.Try couple of custom roms and decide which suits you best.

This is so true.. Just try other roms, and find which one suits your liking..
Also is there anyway to back up my home screen, and other screens settings with the widgets etc and all my app settings so i can just recover them back onto any new rom i install. it takes me hours to do this ater a factory reset or installing a new rom?
Cheers.

Use titanium back up for apps and settings. Never back up system data. Widgets can't be backed up unless the launcher has a backup setting.

I do not think it is better idea to back up your home/screen settings to use it across different ROMs. There is high chance that you will experience weird issues (every ROMs devs request to make a clean install if coming from other ROMs, importing backups would not make it clean anymore ).
As for the ROM, i think ARHD is a clever choice (i have settled to it after trying out all of the ROMs but RCMIX) if you want sense (or no-sense).
What if I asked you about the fastest ROM? I'm currently using LeeDroid bu I noticed that an OLDER Nexus One is much faster regarding the system. My only advantage is SuperFast IO and a bit faster 3D. CPU, even though it's set to 1,8 GHz Smoothass, is only half as efficient as the older 800MHz CPU in Nexus One.I read somewhere that it's a matter of picking a proper ROM, so which one would you suggest to me if I asked only for speed and responsiveness, and maybe battery life. Any Sense ROM is obviously out, but the problem is that I never used any other custom ROM. I would also like to retain my 2 way recording ability.
I used many roms, for me,
the best sense 2.1 rom is ARHD
best sense 3 rom is Virtuous Unity
ARHD is flawless and fast
VU has sense 3 but it has minor issues like Dolby is missing in music app. and its kernel doesnt have 2way recording support...
But i am stiil using VU with Lee s kernel
thanks, although Sense is not crucial, what I want is that my phone works as fast as possible and e'thing works as it should. I'm thinking about CM7 latest 7.1.0 RC1. People say camera is crappy but it can be changed.
I'd say give MIUI a try. It's really fast (faster then cm7 imo) and beautyful if you find the right theme in their theme manager
Furthermore it has way more features than cm7 but it isn't bloated like sense

Only drawback is it makes your phone look and behave like an iPhone, I'd recommend Hydr0G3nMOD it's cm7 based but with some trimming and tweaking and fly's and it's a massive ~72mb! download so that should tell you something about the bloat.

ROM suggestions?

I am looking for a fast, battery efficient and stable daily driver. I have tried probably close to a dozen different ROMs where each had a feature I liked, the bugs drew me away. Currently, I am running CM7 with 2.3.7 gingerbread. I like it but it freezes and reboots every now and then (seemingly whenever I go to use the phone, sometimes loses user data on first boot after a freeze up). I am running low on patience with flashing and reflashing different ROMs, pulling my user apps back and all that jazz, was looking if anybody had suggestions on a great ROM that fits the bill. I would like to use Sense, but obviously am not grounded to that option. Thanks in advance for anyone looking to help out.
If you're not crazy about 4G, then MIUI is the ROM for you. It's stable (according to personal experience; All the bugs people ramble about are obsolete), customizable, and fast. They're currently incorporating ICS keyboard and market into the latest version.
MIUI has been my smoothest, bug free, battery effiecient, as well as most customizable ROM so far. Run it with savagedzen SBC, and I get insane battery life. Was at 18 hours moderate use at barely 51%.

Its always a personal choice but judging by the post.. I would say to go for Myn RLS 5. This is a froyo but you can always get some gingerbread stuff like launchers, keyboard (extremely fast and responsive) and titlebar mods etc.
Do the radio updates and make sure you are running suggested kernels on that forum thread. Switch your apps to SD card and you should be good to go.

What is not so great about CM?

I'm getting my incredible back from warranty repairs soon and it'll be on the last leg of its life since my upgrade is near and I have my heart set on the Galaxy Nexus. In the meantime, despite my love for sense I was planning on learning to live without sense by going to a more pure android rom. I've never tried CM7 so far. I would like to know if there are things that don't work well with CM that would otherwise be fine on an htc rom, like device drivers or such? or if there are some incompatibilities between how apps interact because the hardware is now not supported the same way as it was before?
also is CM7 significantly faster in its routine operation than the HTC based roms?
From my understanding, the only thing that does not work in CM7 is 720p video.
It should be as fast, if not faster, than Sense 1.0 ROMs.

Try chads incredikernel, set it to smartass v2 and lower the min clock speed to 128 best battery life/lag free experience you can get on this phone.
Condemned CyanogenMod V8 Vanilla all the way. Along with incredikernel/smartass2 govnah'. Smooth as butter.
First i installed stable cm 7.1 with tiamats kernel. (i had formatted everything and wiped dalvik). it was fast, but FC'ed all over the place. even the settings tab would fc. i thought maybe the adw launcher was bugged, but after going through a painful process just to get the market and titanium on there to uninstall adw, still no luck. not to mention the auto brightness service would fc so my screen would get stuck being too bright or too dim, and the phone would never shut down, just hang with the shutting down dialog till battery pull.
needless to say but i reflashed, this time with condemned v8 and chads incredikernel that comes along with it. performance is very smooth and no real FCs except for one thing but that was probably my fault. it also comes with the market so i dont have to jump through hoops to get the market. removed adw and put launcher pro on there (i understand if u hate me, i just think launcher is a bit more stable).

Yeah, my phone absolutely hates Tiamat Kernels. It seems to have some kind of love affair with Chad and Tiny's Kernels though. lol
In my experience MIUI has been better than CM7. I have only been using MIUI about a week, but there are no force closes, it doesn't lose my numbers and texts like CM.
However, I can't get wired tethering too work in either. Can't install a driver for RNDIS.

Stupid MIUI broke my power button, had to replace Incredible.
CM7 is a great rom, the amount of support it has and the skill of the development team make it a top notch rom, you should atleast try it out.
Cm7 (whatever flavor), incredikernel, ext 4 mod no limit- dalvik moved, and adrenaline shot.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
cm7 (+ whatever condemned brings along) has been working great now.
i've looked into MIUI and frankly i don't think i am going to even trying it. imitating iOS is not what i want to do. i have an ipod and i don't particularly like the ui aspects of ios. i don't know why anyone would want to make their android ui like ios.
