you're welcome
Hey ACL,
Did you build this test kernel off Kernel 1336 (the latest FRX07 test kernel) or is it from a prior kernel that doesn't incorporate the changes? Will this be in FRX07?

Wait, what? There's no "FRX07 test kernel"... This is based off of 1333 - if you look at the autobuild service, there's a new kernel now 1337 - this has the 3.5mm code in it.

Sorry Arrrghhh, I misspoke, I meant that 1336 added some things for the upcoming FRX07 release. I was just wondering what kernel ACl built the patches off of so I could figure out what was included and not included in his testing kernel, but I had not had the chance to check the site to see there was a new kernel available that included his patches. So I will just use 1337.
Sorry for the confusion.
yes

Pretty sure god had nothing to do with it. Unless you're putting ACL on that high of a pedestal... don't let him get too big of a head now
Enjoy.
Dev of the day
Works great, I've been using the auto build kernal all day and I'm very happy that I no longer get any system panic issues after unplugging like I did when using the extusb. Good job! Thanks ACL

Do you have an issue with just the 3.5mm jack? I haven't had a single reboot yet. Please tell us what build, phone, etc...
Apparently the code to check for headset button isn't there. From a quick look at dmesg it thinks that the TRRS headset is a plain headphone, and pressing the call/answer button doesn't seem to do anything.

Correct, I guess ACL or I should've mentioned this is only the jack that is functional and the audio that routes out of it - there are no advanced features that work (yet).
Give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile - fix it then!
Alarms don't seem to play over either the jack or the speaker when the 3.5mm jack is plugged in.
I tend to keep my TP2 in a cradle overnight, with a speaker. It plays white noise at night over the cradle speakers, charges, and then, in winmo, plays the morning alarms over the device speaker (can't remember if that routing is optional or automatic, but it's comforting since my cradle doesn't have battery backup).
Not trying to take a mile, just thought the mention might be helpful

hehe..
Well i dont have a headset with any advance features so i can't continue at this point until i get my hands on one. And i'm not sure of what the rhod can do even on winmo since i've never used those features.
I guess if we have an outlined goal as to what needs to be added then we can start. Right now its just plain audio
what's an "advanced" feature anyway? are they referring to button-event handling? (as in, during music playback, 1 button press on the headphone is pause, double press is skip to next song, etc...)

Yes. I believe you can also mute calls, answer calls, etc if you have a fancy headset/mic. Some have volume controls as well. All sorts of in-line goodness.
Hey ACL this is really great work on the 3.5 jack. thank you so much for getting that working i have been using it the past few days and it is great!
I will point out one thing i know there is no advanced features as of yet but i will point out that when you get a phone call and the jack is plugged in you can answer thru the phone but the mic is not active. Like my wife uses her phone in her car thru the 3.5 jack and that is how she talks hands-free but the mic does not activate when the headset is plugged in when you receive a phone call. if you unplug it the other party can hear you but as soon as you plug it in they cant. I don't think that is really an advanced feature but just thought i would point it out!
Thanks again this stuff is really awesome!
oh and we are both on rhods400 and rhod500 she being the rhod 500 but its the same on mine cuz i tried it.

Yeah the mic should not work. What we did was actually trick the system to route sound to the headset based on a trigger. We aren't detecting the type of headset which has to be done later along with the advanced functions.

Is there any way to make it work - maybe an option to force it? The ability to use the headphone jack to drive the car audio (while leaving the mic active) is crucial to many of us. I don't care whether or not the phone detects the type of headset - I'd just like to be able to have it default to having the mic turned on rather than off.

Nope. No microphone on the cable. Though you can use your phone like a microphone kinda.
I dont know what the engineers at HTC were thinking when they designed it. The idea is great but the result is not that good. Because it makes your phone 10,5 cm longer. Solved it with some hardcore modding with a rubberband.

oh thank you for yr reply sir,
is there a registry setting that i can change to enable the microphone on the phone?
so while listening with my ipod 3.5mm earphone, if there's a incoming call with this device on, i have to unplug it so that the other party can hear my voice?

No, the microphone is enabled when the 3.5mm phones are plugged in.
Unplug the phones is an option, though i tend to hold my phone as a microphone and talk into the handset while having my headphones on.
oh so to double confirm I do not have to unplug it when making a call as it would automatically enable the phones mic?
Need to make sure as the third party plugs does not enable it
That is correct.

Is anyone else's headphones refusing to work? I will plug them in and for a split second I get some sound then nothing. If unplug them it works just fine. If I restart sometimes they will work again but then stop for no reason.
Seems to be in ANY app that makes sounds, I am running Bugless Beast v.3 and it did it in .4 as well. I have the full root (NAND etc)
I rooted and installed a custom rom within hours of getting the phone so I am not sure if it is something with my hardware or the ROMs I am loading. I haven't seen anyone complain so I am guessing it is just me =(
is it a safe bet youve tried these headphones in other players?
have you tried connecting them to any other sort of speaker system?
I have had this problem. I also have Fresh, Bugless Beast, and EVOlution v8. Can't remember off the top of my head if I've tried the phones in each. Like you said though, if I re-boot, pull them out and plug them back in, or both, they start working again. Weird. The earphones work on my laptop. Hasn't been too much of an issue (doesn't happen all the time) so I've been ignoring it. Besides, the sound quality of the phones I have sucks!! I'm ordering new ones soon and I'm hoping that will resolve the issue. Haven't seen anyone else with this problem so I assumed it was the phones (they were SUPER cheap, like $10).
Yes they work other places and in other systems. They are very expensive headphones so I am certain it isn't the headphones issue.
headphone problem
had that also may be the music app you have on the phone or maybe too many music apps. i had mixzing media player, double twist and the standard music app. i took the mixzing player off and had no issues after that. don't know if this is the answer, but something to look at. hope this helps.
I think other users have found that a normal stereo jack doesn't fit right. I heard there is a small adapter to go from the 3 contact stereo to 4 contact stereo with Mic. I haven't looked for it yet.
It's a female trs to male trrs adapter.

I think that will help.

Headset Blocker.
It has something to do with how the jack seats. The widget nukes the mic function and fixes the problem so now all my headphones / car jacks work.
It blocks the headset / mic function so your normal jacks will work without issue. I have been using it since release day and no more problems. Who uses those wired mic/headsets anymore anyhow.......BLUEHAIRS thats who.

In fact they only show up now as a mic'd headset, after that delay..any ideas?
Fixed: flashed custom rom
Ive been told to use these codes in the start up text but they dont work and I dont know how to get them to work. Can anyone help me with what steps it would take or what I can do to get this to work. In order for me to use the new sound feature to the best of its ability I really need earphones to work.
Enable/Disable handsfree
"htc_hw.handsfree=X"
1=Enable
0=Disable
Headset
"snd.force_headset=X"
1=USB headset
2=3.5mm headset
You can try all the coding you want and it is still aint gonna work..It doesn't work at this moment
I tried the same and other codes in the start up and all it did was disable the sound, once they get the 3.5 mm headphone jack and the camera working i will be a very happy xdanroid tp2 user (not that i'm not already thanks developers for your hard work!

I would take either external speakerphone or 3.5mm jack...I've been refreshing the rhodium zimage page for the past 4 days hoping for a new one to try but nada...
On my tilt 2 im able to use the Headset set to "snd.force_headset=1" and i just call Voicemail before i boot to android and it works fine on android, donno if it will work the same for the 3.5 one tho. hope this helps you. Only thing is when u unplug the headset it may take a few seconds delay for sound to switch back speaker, but other than that it works.
I upgraded my Spotify account just so I can use it on my phone as I'm going on holiday next week, but realised the handsfree (in-ear sound) doesn't even work!! and I can't even use the WM app as a backup..
I do hope this get's sorted soon.
Okay, so I am a Sprint Touch Pro II user, and tried to use the previous posters advice to add "snd.force_headset=1" to the startup.txt file (changed it to 2 instead of 1 as I use the 3.5 jack). I booted to windows with my headset plugged in, called my voicemail as instructed, ran the previously installed Reefermattness stuff, and guess what? My 3.5 jack worked. Only problem, thats all that worked. Once I disconnected the headset, it did not go back to the internal or external speaker. Damn! I thought I could switch for good!
I have an Acura, and every bluetooth phone I have had in the past I could pair with the car, and plug in an Aux line to the headphone jack to listen to music, then if a call came in, it would come through my spearkers.
Now with the EP4g, it comes through the speakers, but no one can hear me, and I can't hear them until I unplug the aux line.
Anyone else have a problem?
i had a conference call on my phone in the car via my AUX input today. The parties were heard through the speakers of the car and they were able to hear me, but complained about a really bad echo and that I was VERY hard to hear. These in car conference calls were fine on my EVO with the same setup. I have not tried the in car bluetooth yet as I didn't think I would need it. Will be trying that next.
Just did a test with my Nissan and had to pull out the AUX cable before I could hear the other end on my speakers. The other end said they could hear me the entire time.
Something is going on with the aux cable. I really like the phone, but I don't like trying to figure **** out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291889
I was under the impression that the mic becomes disabled when the AUX cable is in. Had similar behavior on my old Palm Centro. It went into "headset" mode and the mic turned off. In my thread, someone said that it is working fine. Perhaps there is something else causing it?
Do you use or does the Samsung voice dial app automatically launch when you put your aux cable in? Mine does. The mic does not work for it either. Maybe its the culprit?
***** My issue was fixed by changing the TTY settings *****
Settings>Call Settings>TTY mode>TTY VCO
Its just an aux cable, no mic to it. I plug it in and dont see anything in the status bar and no apps launch.
Right, but when the AUX cable is put in, the Microphone on the epic is disabled, at least that's my working theory. IDK, maybe its just something with mine, but at the moment, no-one can hear me when the aux cable is installed, and i cannot use the voice search applications
***** My issue was fixed by changing the TTY settings *****
Settings>Call Settings>TTY mode>TTY VCO
I will give that a try, any idea what that mode does? Manual doesn't really help.

VCO stands for Voice carry over. I could be wrong on the exact purpose, but i understand that it is designed to allow those with hearing impediments but capable of speaking to use their own voice while their speaker is hooked up to another device to assist in hearing.
Basically, it keeps the microphone on the device "ON" while the audio is outputted to another device. In our case, the car speakers.
Otherwise, when the device is outputting audio, it is looking for another source of voice input. If you car had a hands-free option built in, it would work just fine without changing the setting as the voice input would be coming from the hands free option.
Just a guess really. Glad its working for me, hope it works for you!
Yes it wierd, My car does have bluetooth built in, but when the aux cable is plugged in it doesn't send sound to the handsfree. Not sure what the issue is.

Can anyone also confirm that this works?
I have an iphone 4s right now, but I really want to go back to android and get a GSII, but that bluetooth problem was a big hassle when I had the Epic 4G. However, with the Epic 4G, someone wrote an app that would allow you to reroute sound through bluetooth with the aux was plugged in. I'm hoping there's a fix out there...
Weird thing started happening to my phone: when I plug in a pair of headphones (with or without mic) the phone does not detect that they are plugged in! Sound always comes out of the speakers. I've used apps like SoundAbout to force sound of the headset jack and it seems to do the trick. But as you know, this just spoofs the phone... it still thinks it's using the speakers so you'll lose mic capabilities.
The odd thing is that if I turn off my phone, plug in a pair of headphones, and then continue to turn my phone back on... once booted the phone will recognize that it has a pair of headphones plugged in and everything will be fine. Won't work when I unplug and try to replug. It only detects the headphones on boot.
1) Is there a solution to this?
2) Anyone know how the mechanics of this works? It seems like on boot it always tries to check if there are headphones... but something mechanical in the headphone jack triggers the check after boot (may mean I have a mechanical failure)?
3) Is there a way to force headphone mode, more so than what Soundabout does? It's a pain to lose the mic, I use it a lot.
Here are other pertinents:
- Running newest SkyDragon Lollipop GPE rom with Sense Firmware... don't think it's the rom because it worked just last week
- Only recently started happening, not sure what could have caused it
- Noticed the phone always tries to update HTC Service pack, I think I fixed that issue
- Have yet to try cleaning, need to get rubbing alcohol
Thanks for any help anyone can provide me.

I was experiencing the same problem and I know it is not the hardware since I was able to go back to 4.4.4. GPE and get music thru the headset like you. I tried to get an answer from other contributors but they think it is the jack. Anyway below is what I've wrote to get help.

Thank you for the feedback on personal data. (I appreciated it)
So I've did a factory reset and start flashing the "Stock Google Play Edition Rom LXR22C.H5" rom again.
Since I'm Rooted, this is the one I've flash: RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.0.1-3.11.1700.5_rooted
I've followed the instruction on #2031. Everything else work.... again only plugging in the headset into the jack, does switch music from speakers to headset.
As mentioned before I've upgrade my Stock AT&T HTC One (M8) to GPE 4.4.2 and automatically received all the updates OTA to get to 4.4.4 (Audio was working thru headset and/or speakers with no problems)
The only problem with 4.4.4 is that you don't have access to SD storage. (though I found a patch to update in the system, but haven't tried it)
I like the speed, simplicity of 5.0.1. That is why I keep on trying.
Also I tried changing the Kernel - using skydragon kernel (still same problem with audio). But when I used the kernel for 4.4.4 of GPE, the booting hung at HTC logo before it showed the dead android.
So I'm lost for option other than using an app to manual switch to headset from speaker....(bummer)
Anyway new ideas to proceed are appreciated.

Yeah that makes no sense why it would be hardware since you reverted back to 4.4.4 and it worked again.
The other reason why I don't think it's completely hardware is that, as I mentioned before, if you turn off the phone and then leave headphones plugged in while booting up the phone will recognize them. However, unplugging after boot will permanently lose headphone detection until you leave headphones plugged in during a fresh boot.
I'm thinking that either the software is not calling IsHeadphonePluggedIn (hypothetical) when the hardware is triggered (headphone plugged in), but always calls IsHeadphonePluggedIn when the phone boots. OR, the hardware trigger that tells the phone to call IsHeadphonePluggedIn is truly broken leaving cold boot the only method to detect headphones.
Maybe I'll try downgrading at some point but the weird thing is that I swore this was working without any major ROM updates... like just last week! For the time being, I'm using bluetooth.

Not sure if you've ever used Tasker but you should download that. They have a trigger for "headphone plugged in," and I'd be curious to see if it triggered when you plug in your headphones. You could just have it play a sound or something when it senses headphones. If that works, then it's whatever service handles that hardware interrupt, not the interrupt itself.

Yes, I have and use Tasker. In fact, I have a Profile for headphone or bluetooth headset detection. This is how I know the phone is definitively detecting my headphones on boot—the designated Tasker action triggers and I get the Profile highlighted as active.
When I unplug the headphones, Tasker responds accordingly and runs the exist task and the profile is no longer highlighted. When I try to replug, Tasker doesn't do anything. Headphones not detected.
Another tidbit I've discovered:
- Safe mode doesn't help with headphone detection. In fact, there is none even after cold boots. Tried safe mode to isolate any 3rd party apps that might be causing issues.
- To clarify about reboots. The phone needs to be shutdown completely and turned on while the headphones are plugged in to detect. Issuing a reboot via APM doesn't really work, I don't think.
Straaaange.

I'm checking in again to see if anyone solved the headphone detection issue with 5.0.1. As you mentioned about powering down the phone (and not reboot) does detect the headphone, but after you unplug the headphone it revert back to the speakers. No change when you reinsert the jack for the headphone. I've tried all custom roms that uses 5.0.1 and none works with the headphone. Right now I'm still running GPE 4.4.4 on my AT&T One M8. I really like the features of 5.0.1 but not interested in a dual approach to listen to music in my headphone. Let me know if anyone find a new technique that will work with our M8. (I don't think anyone have been able to get the AT&T version of M8 to work with the headphone on 5.0.1.....If I'm wrong please share......)

I did come across a solution, but it may be unique to me. It's entirely hardware related. Just inside the headphone jack, there is a small connector. I used a pin to pry it out slightly. After doing this, plugging headphones in works like normal. That outer most pin must be the trigger that tells the phone to check if there is a headphone connected.
However, as I mentioned, even without this pin being activated I can still get the phone to detect the headphone buy just cold starting the phone. It may be a difference in how 4.4.4 and 5.0.1 uses the hardware on the phone. I have no clue, it's annoying nonetheless.
So give that a shot!

Interesting.....Did you open your M8 to pry the pin? I tried looking inside the jack but can't see any pin. Plus I looked at the disassembly video on you-tude for the M8 and said, no way (smile). So I'm willing to try but I can't see the pin you're talking about. Is there a diagram you can point me too? Or provide more information. Very much appreciated...

Haha no way I'd open the phone. If you look into the headphone jack with the screen facing up, the pin should be near the 1'o'clock position. It's hard to see so use a flashlight or something. It's very close to the opening, 2-3mm deep only.
Maybe you need to change the whole headphone jack. There's a DIY video on youtube for it. Just give it a try if there isn't any other solution.

Well I've reinstalled 5.0.1 and tried digging into the jack, trying to move the 1pm pin just a few centimeters....well I finally gave up. I was not able to make it work and I got concerned that I would damage the jack, which will cost me a fortune in repair bills. (smile)
Thank you for recommendation....I guess I will use the soundabout app until AT&T release the one for our M8.

Can you explain in more detail when you say "wipe the data".....Are you referring, go into recovery and do a data wipe? or go into an app (which app) and clear the cache or something?
If you can give me the step by step procedures I would appreciate it.
Also did you try this on a "AT&T HTC One M8" versus a HTC One M8? because I'm beginning to notice that there is a very slight difference between the two.
Thanks,

Thanks for the advise....
Geee.......I've been using these Klipsch headphones for all my mobile phones and it has been working on 4.2 to 4.4.4. Once I've upgraded the rom to 5.0.1 audio stop going through the klipsch headphone. Going back to 4.4.4 (lucky I made a Nand backup) it started working again. So I tried several different methods from several people and nothing worked.
Since I tried, what you said, resetting the phone....and of course it still didn't work with the Klipsch headphone.
dah....are you seeing the pattern. Finally the light came on and I decided at the last minute, before restoring 4.4.4 rom, was to find my old Bose headphones and try it.....Wow. It worked but I had to try plugging it in and out to see if it continued working.....AND...yes it continue to play music through the Bose headphone. (tried the Klipsch again and had the same old - not working)
The only difference between the Bose and the Klipsch is that the Klipsch has three rings on the jack. The third one is used to control the player....i.e. skip/stop/pause. The Bose has only two rings on the jack....(just music input)
For others that are experiencing the "No Music thru the headphones" when you install 5.0......check the jack for two vs three rings.
Thanks again for the insight.... (problem solved - closed case)

If you do want to use your klipsch headphones, however, you can just use a standard 3.5mm extension cord in the middle. I've used this trick in the past with an old Nokia and my htc earphones
