Hey fellow EVO's!
I'm looking for a solution to the poor audio quality when recording in a high volume setting (concerts, jam sessions) when using the internal microphone.
Yes, I know that it is not the phone's main use as a personal recorder for this sort of scenarios, but as we all know, the iPhone does it a lot better and I'd really like to show up the iPhone geeks if possible by using an external mic with a recording app.
There's this multifunction audio cable from HTC that I've been thinking about buying and it's called an HTC YC A300 Multifunction audio cable. You can find it on Amazon.com
Any experience, creative ideas, development or anything of that sort that would help me out would be great as I'm sure other people would be able to benefit from the info as well!

I haven't done it, but there is a microphone input in the headphone jack -- it's intended to support a wired headset. With the right cable you should be able to use an external mic.
The app Tape Machine records uncompressed wav files. Even with the internal microphone, it actually makes very decent recordings.

It's better than the built in mic of the phone. Far, far from decent though.

That completely depends on the quality of the microphone, and how sensitive it is.
Well, I just bought myself one of those nifty little Sony compressor mics and I'm going to see how that works out. I may need a convertor to go in to the headphone jack so it recognizes the input, but I'm not sure.
Another way you could go possibly would be to us one of those multifunction cable things. The model is called: HTC P6300 Multifunction Audio Cable YC A200. There's also a YC A300 as well but I'm not sure of the difference between the two is besides the size.
Any new findings?

So i got that sony mic and a convertor so the phone thinks i'm using a headset...and with some apps, with the convertor it works and some, without, it works too. The only issue i'm having is that the internal mic is still on and working while recording. I want the external mic that I'm plugging in to be the ONLY mic it's using and I'd like to control the input volume.
Any insight as to how we could do that?
I have been looking for a solution to this for over a year. It really sucks that everything else about the device is great except this one feature. As for the iPhone, it sounds like Apple has utilized some kind of filter to reduce the bass the phone records (in my experience, the bass is what causes the distortion in the recording).
If Apple can do it, why can't HTC? :?

Recorded audio using built-in Voice Recorder. It's simple to use, UI is nice, and it does the job. The problem - quality is simply horrible.
Is there any way to use the 3.5mm audio jack as line-in? May it be for use with external mic or a direct line from a mixer, doesn't matter, could we record audio using it instead? Possible? Just a dream?

I don't think it has anything to do with the microphone. I think it is the poor choice of codec that HTC is using for the voice recorder and camcorder.
If you think about it, the microphone is generally one of the best and most well understood components on a phone. They are usually quite good.

semi-related question, can the evo work with the iphone earbud/mic? Would be really useful if it does, I can't stand bluetooth, its a buggy unstable battery draining technology, i much prefer the standard earbud and mic.

I don't know for sure, but I would say yes. My girlfriend had an iphone when I had my Hero and it worked with the Hero.

You know what? You got me. That was a serious "duh." moment - I'd completely forgotten that it's wired to be used as part of a headset. I should probably go to bed.
I was thinking along the same lines - I assumed that headphone/mic combos that go into 3.5mm worked on Evo (didn't try it myself, but some say it works so I'll take their word), so I wanted to use ONLY the mic portion and route audio input through there, hopefully in stereo.
Anyone here has done such feat?
I want to use my note as a camcorder with external mic hooked to it.
I had problems with the SGS2 and my wireless microphone - it just didn't receive voice to the recording. same issue with the RAZR.
Can I expect same issues with the note?
Have anyone tried connecting a MIC to the note?

newbie here, looking for external mic info. one thing's for sure, you need to use the right connector. this is a 4 contact miniature jack standard to samsung and iphone. the nokia version is slightly smaller just to annoy people. the 4th connection carries external video connection so its' important to get the right audio connections, available from your friend google. also, you'll possibly have to tell the recorder which mic to use in settings somewhere. i use an excellent app called recforge pro.

for the intrepid, as long as you get the right connections, any mic will do but the electret type are probably the best budget jobs. damage is extremely unlikely, unless you connect to the domestic electricity supply, a useful idiot-rid.

How does it compare to the inbuilt mic?
Any chance you could upload some wav samples of each under the same conditions for reference?
I'm thinking about getting it, or something like it, to use with Audio Evolution and Loopstack.

It's definitely clearer than the built in mic.
Also it's got a small volume switch for high/low sensitivity.
Another thing is that it's quite directional, which means that it records clearly the audio source in front of the mic and pads the background noise.
I'll record some files for you over the weekend.

Sorry about the late reply. The real time monitoring feature is not available in any of the apps which I tested (e.g. Tape Machine Recorder, etc). I think that developers keep such a function disabled on purpose due to the well known latency issue on GB and ICS. Let's hope that google fixes this in Jelly Bean...

It works well for regular phone calls and skype, therefore it should work with other voip apps as well. If you use it for phone calls/voip you have to connect a set of hearphones/speakers to the sound output of the irig mic cast as the internal speaker of the note gets muted.

Just plug in the irig mic cast and then turn it around so that the front of the mic is on the same side as the camera lens. In this case I'd set the mic sensitivity switch to "hi".

Nice! I use PCM Recorder to record acoustic gigs and the internal mic is way too sensitive to the point of distortion.
Does the iRig mic alleviate this with the sensitivity button?

New to this forum. I play in a tribute band and we want to record some of our rehearsals. The camera on my note is really good but the external mic is waaaay too sensitive. I did use the supplied earpiece that comes with the note, which has a tiny mic, which worked really well recording really loud music off my mac speakers but not sure it will pick up enough frequencies in the rehearsal room. (I am going to try it live but in the meantime will and will put the recording of my mac up on youtube) However I used to use a Sony ecm ds70p on a mini disc years ago but it has long since gone. The live audio quality was always really good with this little mic so I am thinking of getting another one. As far as I am aware the Sony has only a three pole 3.5mm jack but I would need a mic with a 4 pole 3.5mm jack, (I think I have that right???) to be able to record into the Note.
Can someone confirm whether this mic will work out of the box...I have a feeling not...or is there a converter jack that I can buy that would allow the use of the three pole jack in a 4 pole socket. Really hoping this is possible and that there is something out there..problem is I am not too sure how to word a google or forum search on this.
Any help would be really great.

This Microphone can't work. Look:
A headphone 4 pins (sound + mic) have 4 contact, beginning for the point are : Sound Left, Sound Right, Ground, Microphone.
If You see the 3º contact of microphone Sony is big then others. It make contact whit Ground + Microphne. Are short circuited.
Can't work this.
A external Mic can work but w/ a connector 4 pins, using only the 3º and the 4º contact (the 2 side cable).

The connector have 4 contacts. The 1º and 2º from the point are the sound to white cable. The 3º is ground (common) and 4º are the Mic to black cable.
The question here is. This is a normal 3,5 pin like on Android's or is proprietary from Apple? On that site enter on Store and choice the Dealer more near You.
I searched through the forums and found some posts that said in order to use your external Mic you need a Y adapter. And that it doesn't support stereo, and some other issues.
Can someone link me to a Y adapter that would work along with a good value microphone that I can use during video recording on my Galaxy S III?
I'm surprised that a company hasn't made a product for this yet where you just plug it in and it works. The camera and video quality are great, but the sound is lacking greatly.
You can also get an OTG cable then you can use the yeti and have digital hd stereo

If I find a mic with a 3.5mm jack can't I just plug it in? the ear buds that come with the phone have a microphone where the volume controls are and it picks up sound during video recording.

the headphone jack can only output a limited amount of power to drive a mic device, any non mobile mic is not going work. if you want high quality sound you must do so with the usb using either an external usb soundcard with analog 3.5mm inputs or just a usb mic like the yeti which is the best you can really get. and yes s3 has native support for almost any kind of usb device so it will work like if you plug in usbdevices to your desktop/laptop as long as it is Plug and play compatible. whether there are good apps for these usage scenarios though is another story.

Good info, thanks. Looked up the yeti mic you mentioned, but it's kinda pricey at $109 and not exactly portable either. Do you use it?

A few of the reviews mention it working with a couple of android phones. Only issue is it seems to pick up alot of background noise. If anyone decides to get this for their s3 please tell us how it performs.
Not really sure what you want a dedicated microphone for taking videos on a cell phone. If you are looking to make quality videos, you might as well get a decent external microphone and syncing up audio in post production. I know my brother uses this in conjunction with a 60D. So I've gone to several concerts with my Samsung Galaxy S3 and I've noticed... Every single video recording with the stock app is absolutely terribad. The video portion is okay (Great for a smartphone) but the audio is absolutely horrendous. I've lately been wanting to find an external microphone that could possibly connect via the 3.5mm jack and serve as the primary mic for picking up sound.
I've scoured the Interwebs for little success on a good external mic that fit my needs. Here are my findings - correct me if I'm wrong in an area:
1. The mic, in order to be recognized by the SGS3 as a mic, needs to have an impedance of over 1000 omegas and has a TRRS 3.5mm jack.
2. There are actually very few compatible mics that would work with the SGS3. One example is the Edutige ESM 01O, which is overpriced and the specs and reviews do not show that it's a good live music recorder.
3. All other vaguely compatible mics are also not good at recording live music, especially bass heavy music (Which is what I frequent). The compatible lavalier mic I found is not what I need.
4. I actually found a mic that is designed for recording live music - the Edutige EIM-004 - BUT it's not compatible with the SGS3, to my dismay. It also costs $80.
So here's my problem - I need a good external microphone that's compatible with my SGS3 that is capable of recording live music with little distortion. Preferably, I'd like a low cost (Ballpark of $20-$50)I've already got the software covered, there are a few apps that I've looked up that fit my needs.

I'm still looking for a solution myself as I also do concerts recording with my S3. The audio recording sounds much better when you aren't as close up to the speakers. I know it would also help if we could block some of the sound coming in. Like ear plugs to block some of the dB.

I've heard of a few apps that reduced the mic's gain and applied a few filters to clean up the sound, but I don't know how much the sound quality improves.

Here's a calibration mic might work.
I like this mic, David. The only problem is the impedance. The mic is 200 ohms but the SGS3 needs a mic of at least 1000 ohms in order for the mic to be recognized as a mic. Otherwise it'll only be recognized as a headset.
For concert recording try the negative mic gain in Boeffla kernel.

i know this isnt going to help much, but i simply cover the mic's slightly with my hands. when i have my phone in the air recording something, phone horizontal, i place my hands in front of the mic holes, so it only records sound from behind my hands. this helps ALOT.

Nice! Hope you had a good time at the show haha. I think this is going to be my temporary fix to the problem (Considering how A&B is coming to town tomorrow I've lost all hope of finding a mic in time), but I'll still need a solution for when I go to Ultra... Because their Funktion One systems are definitely too powerful for this fix.

A quick answer for yah Mecronmancer.
- otg usb cable (couple of bucks)
- Digital to Analogue converter with USB (Appr $30) Behringer UCA222 is what I have.
- USB recording app...USB Audio Record or Audio Evolution. Both apps from Same guys.
- Microphone or analogue stereo inputs (Sky is the limit here)
- a rom that supports this arrangement. My i747m S3 with Stock ICS 4.0.4 works flawlessly with this arrangement.
You will get 16bit, 44.1k Stereo recording quality. Will it record while another app is recording Video? That I don't know. Thiis may be your one caveat. I might give it a shot sometime this week and report back.
UPDATE:
I simultaneously recorded USB Audio with the USB audio app and Video+mic audio with the built in ICS video app successfully. So if it was me, I would combine the 2 source recordings using a PC app and have HQ audio with Video. You just need to time align the 2 in sync very easily since you would have lofi mic audio and hifi usb audio sources.

The UCA222 can be powered from your Smart Phone, in my case, the SGS3. I had to buy a female-A-USB-to-Male-micro USB plug. They are inexpensive. I can't remember if this cable had to be an OTA version. (On The Go)
In my car, if my memory serves me well, I had the USB split with one end going to the SGS3 and the other into my USB cigarette lighter charger. I didn't end up using it in my car because it didn't interact well with the phone call audio stream etc. Lots of glitching.
RE-Recording Sound Quality
Unless your a professional audiophile or sound engineer with impeccable trained ears, the recording quality is flawless and blows away what I could do without it. An app like Audio Evolution Mobile is a great combo, especially if you have a larger and fast tablet.
Ok so it doesn't get power from the phone and it has no batteries. Darn. ..I was hoping it could be a handy mobile recorder.
A splitter usb + battery supply is borderline too cumbersome.
Price is great though -- I might tinker with it as a means to dub vinyl to files.
Does anyone make a $30 adc that includes a phono preamp? Lol.

The purpose of this post is to share with you guys my recent purchase The HTC Bluettoh 3.0 Stereo Headphones. These are the official ones from HTC made for our phones. Those with Sense 4.0 and above and phones with Bluetooth 3.0 and above. What makes these different from other bluetooth heaphones is the fact that they use Bluetooth 3.0 which is a huge advancement meant from Bluetooth v2.1 Enhanced Data Rate. This newer version allows more data to be transferred at a time (wider bandwidth) and HTC has taken advantage of this by providing uncompressed audio with these bluetooth heaphones. The sound quality is so much better. v3.0 is more battery efficient as well than the previous generation. The bluetooth headphone clip allows you to use your own headphones as well!

actually, it's not uncompressed audio. It uses Apt-x codec from CSR which is a cd-quality audio compression technology. There aren't many phones that actually have that codec. HTC One series and galaxy s3 are the ones that pops into my mind. Others (the ones that don't have apt-x) will sound like Bluetooth 2.1 edr no mather which version of Bluetooth they use.

I only ask because I stream music via bluetooth quite a bit whether it be to my Yamaha receiver or my head unit in my truck and because of the low bitpool setting in Sense I get a lot of crackling on the high end. AOSP this is not an issue. Only in Sense.
So my question is...How if HTC hasn't fixed the bluetooth bitpool issue in the software can any bluetooth device stream the high quality?
i ordered the ikross bluetooth stereo receiver, they are quite good and much cheaper they go for about 26 dollars

Thanks you very much news, I think his headphones low dive deep, clean and full, flexible and intensity, slow feeling. Good high frequency extension, delicate and supple and housing design is also very good

You can actually use any headsets for jogging and especially walking. Just depends how much wire and bulk you are willing to put up with. Personally, I have the LG Tone+ headset. They sound great and dont make you feel like you are tied to something. They are actually a very practical setup. Any way. Those are my thoughts.

Is the mic in the headset or is there a mic on the unit as well?
ie could I use a standard headset without a mic and still talk?

The mic is not built in onto the bluetooth device, your earphones will have to have a mic

it's uncompressed but who cares? it seems those use apt-x lossless codec.

I picked up one of these on the back of this review, and I have to say, I'm really impressed. I got i it mainly for running with, but I've found myself just using it for everything. In the car, at work, - the battery life is really good, and the drain on the phone really in negligible.
My one complaint... I nearly lost my phone in the gym, cause I left it at the rower I was using, but the range is so good ( around 20m without any loss of audio ) I ended up having to backtrack my whole circuit to find it
I cannot believe they did not include a mic in the clip. It really limits your use of alternative headphones/earphones.

It does have a mic in the clip, can't post a link so check the HTC website for details.
I have this as well. I have to say that for a BT tranceiver, it impresses me so much. My only complain is that I can't really monitor the battery capacity in this thing. But at least it will notify me with that robotic female voice that my "battery is low". However, battery life is good.
I use it when I'm travelling because I don't really like brandishing my One in public transport (it's very unsafe to show off your phone here in Indonesia) as it allows me to control my music wirelessly.
I pair this to some other devices as well, like my laptop so that I can use my hifi system to amplify my laptop using aux cable. I don't use the aux cable directly because it's too far to where I usually sit and enjoy my movies.
All in all, I am satisfied with this product.

Because of that sentence, I have bought this device. But NO, it doesn't have the mic in the clip.
Now I am sad and angry I didn't go for a Sony or Samsung.
I have a MW600 at home, which worked perfectly, but last month the clip lost the suspension thingy so I cannot clip it to my shirt anymore... And that's why I decided to buy this one.
But bummer, you cannot use any headphones. You must pick the ones that have the microphone on. And hence, the device is not useful for other stuff, like in-car use and such...
Otherwise, sound is good, can connect to my mac and phone at the same time and can charge it while using it. Really a shame HTC did not put a mic on the clip...
I had these other bluetooth headphones in mind:
1) Sony SBH20
2) Samsung HS3000
and of course
3) Sony MW600
Good info sudkcoce. I am also thinking of buying this but do not like the earbuds. I need something that will stay on my head. Earbuds to me have always been a fad/gimmick. Can you post if any other aftermarket headphones with mics and preferably ear clips or dome speakers that are compatible with this bluetooth device? Maybe if you have others from friends try them and let us know. For now will be considering the other devices you listed for my HTC One.
I am pretty sure any headphone with a built in mike will work.

I have waterproof earphones by Monster designed for iOS and they work perfectly with the bluetooth clip. Any Headphones/ earphones will work with this as long as they have a 3.5mm jack. Of those headphones have a play pause button on the centre it will work as well. The other buttons may not
I've had these things since February(a nice gift from HTC) and I love it. I don't use it as headphones though when I'm home. I have an aux cable going into my surround sound and I have hooked the Bluetooth dongle onto that Aux cable. Streaming the music crisply, clearly, and perfectly through my system.
