[Q] Any audio recording enthusiasts using EVO's!

Hey fellow EVO's!
I'm looking for a solution to the poor audio quality when recording in a high volume setting (concerts, jam sessions) when using the internal microphone.
Yes, I know that it is not the phone's main use as a personal recorder for this sort of scenarios, but as we all know, the iPhone does it a lot better and I'd really like to show up the iPhone geeks if possible by using an external mic with a recording app.
There's this multifunction audio cable from HTC that I've been thinking about buying and it's called an HTC YC A300 Multifunction audio cable. You can find it on Amazon.com
Any experience, creative ideas, development or anything of that sort that would help me out would be great as I'm sure other people would be able to benefit from the info as well!

I haven't done it, but there is a microphone input in the headphone jack -- it's intended to support a wired headset. With the right cable you should be able to use an external mic.

The app Tape Machine records uncompressed wav files. Even with the internal microphone, it actually makes very decent recordings.

It's better than the built in mic of the phone. Far, far from decent though.

That completely depends on the quality of the microphone, and how sensitive it is.

Well, I just bought myself one of those nifty little Sony compressor mics and I'm going to see how that works out. I may need a convertor to go in to the headphone jack so it recognizes the input, but I'm not sure.
Another way you could go possibly would be to us one of those multifunction cable things. The model is called: HTC P6300 Multifunction Audio Cable YC A200. There's also a YC A300 as well but I'm not sure of the difference between the two is besides the size.
Any new findings?

So i got that sony mic and a convertor so the phone thinks i'm using a headset...and with some apps, with the convertor it works and some, without, it works too. The only issue i'm having is that the internal mic is still on and working while recording. I want the external mic that I'm plugging in to be the ONLY mic it's using and I'd like to control the input volume.
Any insight as to how we could do that?

I have been looking for a solution to this for over a year. It really sucks that everything else about the device is great except this one feature. As for the iPhone, it sounds like Apple has utilized some kind of filter to reduce the bass the phone records (in my experience, the bass is what causes the distortion in the recording).
If Apple can do it, why can't HTC? :?

Mobile Solution w/ Epic?

Thinking about making my mobile experience consolidated. I want a descent mount, power and audio for my epic.

As far as audio, I don't have an aux in for my radio. I can get it with a few different mods that have provide aux input and/or bluetooth pairing to phone. I'm thinking life would be easier with a hardwire to the headphone port. My Sirius/Pandora would still stop if I had a incomming call. But does the mic on the phone work if there is something plugged into the speaker jack? Is there a way to rig something to the phone jack that inclues a mic (kinda like the earbuds that came with our epics)?
I looked at some expensive options that have bluetooth displays and onboard sync to phone contacts? Why bother.. we already have a great display and easy acces to contact?

Can I use external mic with the note? what kind?

I want to use my note as a camcorder with external mic hooked to it.
I had problems with the SGS2 and my wireless microphone - it just didn't receive voice to the recording. same issue with the RAZR.
Can I expect same issues with the note?
Have anyone tried connecting a MIC to the note?

newbie here, looking for external mic info. one thing's for sure, you need to use the right connector. this is a 4 contact miniature jack standard to samsung and iphone. the nokia version is slightly smaller just to annoy people. the 4th connection carries external video connection so its' important to get the right audio connections, available from your friend google. also, you'll possibly have to tell the recorder which mic to use in settings somewhere. i use an excellent app called recforge pro.

for the intrepid, as long as you get the right connections, any mic will do but the electret type are probably the best budget jobs. damage is extremely unlikely, unless you connect to the domestic electricity supply, a useful idiot-rid.

Just an update on this:
I've finally received the irig mic cast and it works great with my note

How does it compare to the inbuilt mic?
Any chance you could upload some wav samples of each under the same conditions for reference?
I'm thinking about getting it, or something like it, to use with Audio Evolution and Loopstack.

It's definitely clearer than the built in mic.
Also it's got a small volume switch for high/low sensitivity.
Another thing is that it's quite directional, which means that it records clearly the audio source in front of the mic and pads the background noise.
I'll record some files for you over the weekend.

ie. if you plug headphones in, can you hear what you are recording?

Sorry about the late reply. The real time monitoring feature is not available in any of the apps which I tested (e.g. Tape Machine Recorder, etc). I think that developers keep such a function disabled on purpose due to the well known latency issue on GB and ICS. Let's hope that google fixes this in Jelly Bean...

It works well for regular phone calls and skype, therefore it should work with other voip apps as well. If you use it for phone calls/voip you have to connect a set of hearphones/speakers to the sound output of the irig mic cast as the internal speaker of the note gets muted.

Just plug in the irig mic cast and then turn it around so that the front of the mic is on the same side as the camera lens. In this case I'd set the mic sensitivity switch to "hi".

Nice! I use PCM Recorder to record acoustic gigs and the internal mic is way too sensitive to the point of distortion.
Does the iRig mic alleviate this with the sensitivity button?

New to this forum. I play in a tribute band and we want to record some of our rehearsals. The camera on my note is really good but the external mic is waaaay too sensitive. I did use the supplied earpiece that comes with the note, which has a tiny mic, which worked really well recording really loud music off my mac speakers but not sure it will pick up enough frequencies in the rehearsal room. (I am going to try it live but in the meantime will and will put the recording of my mac up on youtube) However I used to use a Sony ecm ds70p on a mini disc years ago but it has long since gone. The live audio quality was always really good with this little mic so I am thinking of getting another one. As far as I am aware the Sony has only a three pole 3.5mm jack but I would need a mic with a 4 pole 3.5mm jack, (I think I have that right???) to be able to record into the Note.
Can someone confirm whether this mic will work out of the box...I have a feeling not...or is there a converter jack that I can buy that would allow the use of the three pole jack in a 4 pole socket. Really hoping this is possible and that there is something out there..problem is I am not too sure how to word a google or forum search on this.
Any help would be really great.

This Microphone can't work. Look:
A headphone 4 pins (sound + mic) have 4 contact, beginning for the point are : Sound Left, Sound Right, Ground, Microphone.
If You see the 3º contact of microphone Sony is big then others. It make contact whit Ground + Microphne. Are short circuited.
Can't work this.
A external Mic can work but w/ a connector 4 pins, using only the 3º and the 4º contact (the 2 side cable).

The connector have 4 contacts. The 1º and 2º from the point are the sound to white cable. The 3º is ground (common) and 4º are the Mic to black cable.
The question here is. This is a normal 3,5 pin like on Android's or is proprietary from Apple? On that site enter on Store and choice the Dealer more near You.

Okay, so for those of us who like to use our phones as a car stereo media source, there just is no 100% "Winning" that I have been able to find.
ANALOG USB AUDIO:
Sure, both TouchWiz and some AOSP ROM's support this. But there are two issues.
1) TouchWiz sucks (IMO).
2) The sound has "low level background noise" (IMO).
3) AOSP docking does not work properly, such as the CarHomeUltra does not get to disable the "home" button like it's supposed to.
DIGITAL USB AUDIO:
Okay, TouchWiz supports it but has lots of "cd-audio type skipping sounds" from time to time. No current AOSP ROM supports it. And because the USB-OTG connector requires certain pins be used on the connector, you lose the auto-dock feature regardless of ROM.
BLUETOOTH AUDIO:
It's a crappy sound for audiophiles. It's just so down compressed, it's useless for some ears.
APT-X BLUETOOTH AUDIO:
Better quality audio, but AT&T has already warned me once that I will lose my Unlimited Data plan if I keep using Bluetooth to my car stereo. And bluetooth in general is a "quirky" working technology that irks me sometimes.
What do I want? I want to be able to use a USB-DAC on an AOSP ROM and keep the auto-dock feature.

He's a little wrong there. Apt-X is an audio codec that is installed in some high end phones, and is starting to become the standard. Currently no car stereo has the capability of using this codec, but they will probably be on the market by the end of the year. Apt-X is preferred over A2DP because it is loss-less, so the audio quality is the same as plugging your phone in with a AUX cable.
AT&T is blocking you from using the Pandora app on your head unit, because technically it is tethering. The app simply sets up an Ad-Hoc network, and uses the phones internet to stream Pandora that runs on the car stereo.
But...To answer your original question, I would suggest using the standard headset port on your phone. The DAC on the USB plug is generally software driven, and will not give you as good of sound as the standard headphone jack can. If your not satisfied with the quality, get CM10 and DSP Manager to fully customize your sound.

Ummm. Auxiliary? I use it my cars all the time sounds awesome with awesome beats .

I feel for you...because I am going through the same dang crap.
I am surprised you have not corresponded more with me bro. There is hardly anyone out there that seems to be on this One Handed docking quest. Even though there have been HOW MANY MILLION S3's sold...we are in an unpopular niche.
The skipping that I experience is most severe when listening to MEDIA while dialing out, during a call, and during an incoming call ringing. It is like a stuck skipping CD digital like sound. The author of SoundAbout app, is trying to help me solve this issue but he does not have the usb/otg/dac arrangement that we do. One version of his app, eliminated at least the stubborn perpetual skipping, but has a byproduct of losing the media stream after a call...which requires unplugging/replugging the usb cable.
I had such a terrific setup with my old HD2. It was a lightly modified card dock but one handed docking providing POWER and AUDIO via 2 ports, usb and headphone jack. What I am sure I will have to end up doing, is having to connect the Headphone audio out by HAND as a 2nd step. At least, I will have NO SKIPPING, and all audio including CALLS coming into my car deck without any weird bumps!
If I had chosen to go USB analogue out, I get really bad noise but only when charging. Somehow, when it's charging, I get hiss, switching sounds, clicks etc. I can almost 99% confirm it is not ground loop type issues.

1) Regarding aptX: probably, it won't be aptX Loseless that makes it to car stereos, but simply aptX. The Loseless codec looks to be targeted for professionals. But, still aptX is still many times better than the ugly old SBC codec.
2) The codec will change, not the protocol: AptX replaces SBC (not A2DP). A2DP (the transfer protocol) can use whatever codec it wants. So, whenever the car stereos are released, it will be A2DP with aptX. CSR has already released an aptX Bluetooth chipset for car stereos...someone just needs to pick it up and use it now, haha!
3) Concerning BT streaming and "tethering": not to derail this thread since you already have one about this, but I think they're bluffing hard. That representative is confused and wrong. I imagine if you pressed them to provide evidence or explain what their definition of tethering was, they would fail magnificently.

For enabling docking -> hmm...what about using a NFC tag? This one enables docking modes. Or, maybe use a Tasker to detect Bluetooth connectivity?

And you do realize that achieving true audiophile sound quality in a daily driver is all but impossible?
If your streaming Pandora your not getting anywhere near lossless quality so why not use Bluetooth? Bluetooth audio streaming has come along way. If your standard audio file on your phone is a 320kpbs mp3, your not missing anything streaming via Bluetooth. I was once skeptical about this until I finally found a good pair of BT headphones.
I'm interested to hear more detail about your car audio setup. My setup is decent, better than most everyone else I know and IMO the only difference I can hear between Bluetooth streaming audio from my phone and the music on the sd card in my stereo is the over equalization from being equalized by the phone and again by my sound processor.

Normal Bluetooth vs. other methods has an obvious degredation on the sound for me.
Yes, Pandora sounds bad even when the "high quality" selection is checked off and I pay for the higher resolution.
But, normal Bluetooth makes Pandora sound even worse, according to my ears.

Pretty basic at the moment. 50 watts for each of my front & rear speakers. And 300 watts to a 15" Kicker CompVX DVC subwoofer in a 4.5 cu.ft. 32hz tuned enclosure.

Wow. I hear a boatload of difference between Bluetooth and otherwise. But I'm 42 years old and maybe my ears are just more fine tuned than yours are.
I'm using APT-X [high definition] Bluetooth right now and it's the best compromise in sound & convenience I've found so far.
I keep meaning to write up a DIY on how I have things set up. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Btw, you're is "you are" and "your" is not.

I wouldn't full on call myself an audiophile (too poor to be one as student) but I love higher end sound. I personally prefer an aux cord for sound, it's a little less handy I guess but so far gives the best bang for your buck as far as sound goes.

Depends. If your charging cable is too close to the aux jack you'll get electrical feedback. Had it happen with my FM transmitter...I have one of those 1->2 12V adapters with a USB port. Whenever the USB port is used it produces quite a bit of it.

I have to agree with most of what has been said here on the S3 not being up to snuff for car audio. First I will say its my favorite phone I have ever had. Just about everything else about the phone rocks. But when it comes to car audio, I have to say its the ONE and only thing I will give props to my old iphone...using the usb direct to the radio that not only played the highest quality music, but it charged it as well at the same time with one cable and nothing else to do was kick ass. I dont get why if Ipods and Iphones can make this work so well, why cant these guys? I know most stereo makers lean heavily to the iphones and android as a whole is sorta looked over for the most part, sure it may work with android, but they have all the hardware and most things are geared towards iphones. I use either a samsung hs3000 for bluetooth audio or just give up and use the aux, but neither is as good as the iphone on usb. Even the ipod/iphone on aux is not as good as usb. So it works, but your settling for sure.
Alot of times I still will just put the ipod in the car if I really want the better music quality, but I would much rather have an all in one with my phone for music, nav and calls while driving.

Seen a few stereos with mirror link that look like they would be great for android. Almost bought a sony with it but decided against it due to having to go back to a touchwiz rom as well as I'm hoping miracast will make an appearance in some stereos in the future.

SGSIII External Microphone - Suggestions?

So I've gone to several concerts with my Samsung Galaxy S3 and I've noticed... Every single video recording with the stock app is absolutely terribad. The video portion is okay (Great for a smartphone) but the audio is absolutely horrendous. I've lately been wanting to find an external microphone that could possibly connect via the 3.5mm jack and serve as the primary mic for picking up sound.
I've scoured the Interwebs for little success on a good external mic that fit my needs. Here are my findings - correct me if I'm wrong in an area:
1. The mic, in order to be recognized by the SGS3 as a mic, needs to have an impedance of over 1000 omegas and has a TRRS 3.5mm jack.
2. There are actually very few compatible mics that would work with the SGS3. One example is the Edutige ESM 01O, which is overpriced and the specs and reviews do not show that it's a good live music recorder.
3. All other vaguely compatible mics are also not good at recording live music, especially bass heavy music (Which is what I frequent). The compatible lavalier mic I found is not what I need.
4. I actually found a mic that is designed for recording live music - the Edutige EIM-004 - BUT it's not compatible with the SGS3, to my dismay. It also costs $80.
So here's my problem - I need a good external microphone that's compatible with my SGS3 that is capable of recording live music with little distortion. Preferably, I'd like a low cost (Ballpark of $20-$50)I've already got the software covered, there are a few apps that I've looked up that fit my needs.
Here's my phone specs:

I'm still looking for a solution myself as I also do concerts recording with my S3. The audio recording sounds much better when you aren't as close up to the speakers. I know it would also help if we could block some of the sound coming in. Like ear plugs to block some of the dB.

I'm still looking for a solution myself as I also do concerts recording with my S3. The audio recording sounds much better when you aren't as close up to the speakers. I know it would also help if we could block some of the sound coming in. Like ear plugs to block some of the dB.

I've heard of a few apps that reduced the mic's gain and applied a few filters to clean up the sound, but I don't know how much the sound quality improves.

Here's a calibration mic might work.

I like this mic, David. The only problem is the impedance. The mic is 200 ohms but the SGS3 needs a mic of at least 1000 ohms in order for the mic to be recognized as a mic. Otherwise it'll only be recognized as a headset.

For concert recording try the negative mic gain in Boeffla kernel.

i know this isnt going to help much, but i simply cover the mic's slightly with my hands. when i have my phone in the air recording something, phone horizontal, i place my hands in front of the mic holes, so it only records sound from behind my hands. this helps ALOT.

Nice! Hope you had a good time at the show haha. I think this is going to be my temporary fix to the problem (Considering how A&B is coming to town tomorrow I've lost all hope of finding a mic in time), but I'll still need a solution for when I go to Ultra... Because their Funktion One systems are definitely too powerful for this fix.

So here's my problem - I need a good external microphone that's compatible with my SGS3 that is capable of recording live music with little distortion. Preferably, I'd like a low cost (Ballpark of $20-$50)I've already got the software covered, there are a few apps that I've looked up that fit my needs.
Here's my phone specs:
AT&T Samsung Galaxy SIII i747 running Cyanogen Mod 10.0.0

A quick answer for yah Mecronmancer.
- otg usb cable (couple of bucks)
- Digital to Analogue converter with USB (Appr $30) Behringer UCA222 is what I have.
- USB recording app...USB Audio Record or Audio Evolution. Both apps from Same guys.
- Microphone or analogue stereo inputs (Sky is the limit here)
- a rom that supports this arrangement. My i747m S3 with Stock ICS 4.0.4 works flawlessly with this arrangement.
You will get 16bit, 44.1k Stereo recording quality. Will it record while another app is recording Video? That I don't know. Thiis may be your one caveat. I might give it a shot sometime this week and report back.
UPDATE:
I simultaneously recorded USB Audio with the USB audio app and Video+mic audio with the built in ICS video app successfully. So if it was me, I would combine the 2 source recordings using a PC app and have HQ audio with Video. You just need to time align the 2 in sync very easily since you would have lofi mic audio and hifi usb audio sources.

The UCA222 can be powered from your Smart Phone, in my case, the SGS3. I had to buy a female-A-USB-to-Male-micro USB plug. They are inexpensive. I can't remember if this cable had to be an OTA version. (On The Go)
In my car, if my memory serves me well, I had the USB split with one end going to the SGS3 and the other into my USB cigarette lighter charger. I didn't end up using it in my car because it didn't interact well with the phone call audio stream etc. Lots of glitching.
RE-Recording Sound Quality
Unless your a professional audiophile or sound engineer with impeccable trained ears, the recording quality is flawless and blows away what I could do without it. An app like Audio Evolution Mobile is a great combo, especially if you have a larger and fast tablet.

Ok so it doesn't get power from the phone and it has no batteries. Darn. ..I was hoping it could be a handy mobile recorder.
A splitter usb + battery supply is borderline too cumbersome.
Price is great though -- I might tinker with it as a means to dub vinyl to files.
Does anyone make a $30 adc that includes a phono preamp? Lol.

You miss read.
YES...it CAN definitely be powered from the smartphone.
Read my reply post again.

I didn't think phones were capable if supplying usb power so when you wrote about the OTG cable *and* the splitter with power I assumed you needed both.
