Failed to...oh wait. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, quick question. I was having trouble searching for the answer (sometimes it was too broad or narrow and I didn't get anywhere)
So on my 16 GB sd I do not have it partitioned and it says there is no sd-ext. I'm running the CM Nightlies and on the latest (132 at the moment)
Into the problem/concern/thing:
Through "Quick App Manager" I move big apps to my sd. It really only shows you the movable apps and then redirects you to the Settings>Applications>(Click on App for Info) screens. Okay thats normal so whats the deal?
When I try to move some apps it says "Failed To Move" and when I click it a second time it successfully moves the app to sd. It didn't do it for maybe the first app but then failed EVERY time after followed by working on a second click.
What I'm hoping for in an answer is: does it matter as long as its working? Should I consider partitioning? I know a lot of people say "the G2 has so much memory why would you even..." well because its preference. This IS android after all
*I apologize because the answer likely exists but I truly didn't see it earlier and don't have all the time in the world. So even if you can just link me to it that'd be swell.

Did you format the card from recovery? I'd reformat it with the settings it chooses from Clockwork (or w/e recovery you use).

apps2sd on CM6

Has anyone had success with apps2sd on CM6? Is it fat or ext? I've searched the forums and cyanogen's wiki, but haven't found much information about release 6.
On my slide, I've enabled moving apps in the Cyanogen menu. Assuming it's apps2sd-fat, moving apps isn't working, though the system does report having installed several apps to sd of its own accord.
It's Fat. Usually 3/4 of the app goes on the stick and the other 1/4 stay on the phone.
You're saying you can't move apps when you go to manage apps? It works fine for me.
As mentioned, it is FAT. If you have CM6 installed already, just go to Manage Applications, open the app, and click Move to SD. As also mentioned though, even some downloaded apps will not let you move them, and the majority of the system apps, if not all of them, cannot be moved to the SD.
That's why I ask. Every one I've tried to copy has given me a "application failed to copy" error.
So I am assuming you installed cm6?Not sure if it matters, but did you go to Settings > Cyanogen Settings > Application Settings and put a check in the box for "Allow application moving".
If you've done that, are you trying to move system apps, or only apps you've downloaded?
Yes. I've checked the box enabling moving. The apps I'm moving are not system apps. Most tell me there's an error and can't be copied. Then there's the "protected app" error, which I expected, of course.
I used Cyanogen on my G1 when all it had was apps2sd for the ext3 partition. I'm new to Cyanogen on the slide and was just curious, as I assumed it was fat now.
So I don't have to repartition my sd card for it now. I guess I need to find the source of the error somehow.
If you have the ext partition already, you could use the firerat patch to move apps to a2sd. It will work using the terminal or adb.

[Q] NES - NotEnoughSpace App

So like the majority of us, I recently got the "Low Memory" error message.
I looked into the problem and ended up deleting my many text messages which fixed the problem. I then thought, something isnt right. So I did some more research into the problem and found an app called NES- NotEnoughSpace which looked pretty promising so I bought it.
I followed the steps to create another partition so I can move the heavy hitter apps to this new partition and free up space. I tried creating a partition on the /emmc and on the SD, both seemed to be successful (tried various sizes from 100mb to 1000mb)
When I tried to move the big app (netflix) to this new partition, the program tells me "unable to retrieve partition size." I have contacted the developer and after a few back and fourth emails he pretty much said well i have no idea whats going on and stopped replying.
My question is, has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it? if it makes a difference, when I use Partitions Info Lite I get a message saying "you have too many partitions, maybe because of Apps2SD" although I havent used Apps2SD.
Any ideas?
Thanks guys.

Update troubles with my Wildfire S

This has been a problem with my device since the very begining, and I would like to know if it's a general problem with Android, if it's a specific problem with the Wildfire S, or if it's just that god hates me and he gives me the devices with all the horrible bugs (see this thread for my other inexplicable bug that no one else seems to have).
Sometimes, when I go into the market and try and download app updates, the update goes through it's process of installation, the progress bar fills up and everything... then right as it's about to finish I get an error. "Update failed, please try again." It's very inconsistent too, sometimes I'll try and download an update a few times, and on the third attempt it gets it. Other times the app won't be able to update for months at a time. My mobile has been trying to get an update for "Cut the Rope" for over 3 weeks now. It gets so annoying I turn the WiFi off because he keeps throwing "Updates Available!" notifications at me that are completely useless to me.
Anyone else have this? Or is my WF-S just cursed?

Try clearing your cache. How much room have you got on your cache partition and in your data paritions?
It has to download a 15 meg or whatever installer for Cut the rope, then unpacking it then install it then delete the original installer. That takes more than 15 megs.
How do I clear the cache?
Also, can't it use my microSD? I have a 32GB card in there.

Use it for what? Can you give me some details? Is your phone S-OFF, rooted, etc?. How much internal memory do you have right now, etc.

You said that when an app is downloaded it needs to first download a 15 MB "cache partition", I was wondering why it can't use some of the space on the microSD. As for rooting, I have a GSM Wildfire S, from what I understand those are difficult to Root... so no, I've never rooted it, and I don't think it's S-Off (I'm not sure how to check that...)
I think I have 31 MB of free internal memory capacity...
pm setInstallLocation 2 and Apps2SD with Tutorial
Forget all you heard from me before as it seems to have served to confuse you which is fine. No worries.
Read this thread
Where it says to type "adb shell pm setInstallLocation" instead to be safe type:
"adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2" which tells the phone to try to install an app to your sd card by default. 0 is auto and 1 is internal.
Keep in mind that it doesn't move 100% of the app to the phone. App libraries, Dalvik cache data and application cache data will stay on the internal memory but it will buy you some space.
That's it.
PS:
Go somewhere and get your phone XTC-Clipped. You will have a lot more options to create space such as Link2SD which moves the apps, app libraries and dalvik cache files to a second external partition you create.
The nice thing about it is DOES allow you to move widget apps and they work.
Another nice thing about it is when you put your phone into usb mass storage mode, even though the primary partition on it with all your own data, pics etc, gets unmounted in the phone and unusable, the second partition doesn't unmount and you can still run all your apps that are linked to it.
Get clipped! If you have enough for a 32 GB card you have enough to spend $20 to get your phone clipped.
Now
When you are done this REBOOT your phone.
Go to this Android Marketplace link and download apps2sd
WATCH the video tutorial and then start moving apps off your internal memory to your SD card.
Beware not to move things that have widgets you want to use like say Doubletwist music player or Battery Monitor. The widgets will no longer function.
Somewhere in that program is a clear application cache choice as well. Clean up your cache for more room.
30 megs is not enough to download AND install Cut The Rope to your internal memory plus your auto sync will stop working when you drop below 18 megs or so of internal space.
Buy yourself some S-ON room with that setup.
If you want to move individual programs to or from the SD card to the phone and back, etc, you can go to /Settings/Applications/Manage/ scroll to and click on the application in question and choose the option to "Move to Phone" or "Move to SD Card".
Cheers.
I see... and this is all low risk right? I mean, getting updates to Cut the Rope would be nice, but it's not the biggest priority in the world, lol.
Also... I'm working on getting that Clip, if I have to I might just buy one... 67$ would still be cheaper than going out to buy a Nexus (from what I hear those are the easiest to Root). This clip would work with a GSM device right? That's how it does it's thing, by plugging into the SIM slot?

[Q] Android Revolution - basic question

Hello
Please forgive any non-tech language.
Please help - my recently-ex-boyfriend hacked my new phone and it now has Android Revolution on it.
I keep running out of space even though I don't have much on it - and looking at the storage in Settings, it seems that Android Revolution (542 MB) and Flash Boot (4.83MB) is taking up some of the space that I could do with freeing up.
Can I just delete them? Will everything still work?
I assume this is the case but could do with confirmation just in case it does anything to the phone that I can't undo.
He would help, but I don't like to ask.
So I'm relying on you guys - as he asked for help here when he messed up the hack in the first place!
Thanks in advance.

While I've got your attention - can I manually update SuperSU? It's telling me I need to but I don't know what it is/does.
Thanks - I may be a frequent visitor until I work out what I'm doing!

That is what gives you the root. So yeah update that through the market..
And welcome
There may be another reason why you don't have so much space. There are a few threads on here about the disk losing a whole bunch of it's 25GB for different reasons. the .lost folder being one of them.
Aargh, really?
Yes, it does seem bonkers to me. I've gone through and deleted music I don't listen to. I only have one or two episodes of t.v. on there and it's saying 'no space' all the time. Is there anything I can do without roping him back in?
How do I diagnose what the space problem is? What will I see in .Lost?
And then what do I do to fix it?
You're going to regret helping me as I am a real novice...
Thanks so much!
E
Grab an app called "Titanium Backup" from the market, besides its utility as a backup tool it will give you visual and numeric summaries of how much space you have left on your System, Internal storage and SD card. Where is it saying that you are running out of space though?
If it is displaying that message when you are trying to install apps then it is likely that the market is a little broken, this can be fixed easily with titanium backup (you just clear all the market "links" and then use an option called "Market Doctor" to restore the correct links. (I remember reading that this can be a permissions problem too and using the "fix permissions" option from Clockwork can also fix, I haven't tried it although it cant do any harm)
From the sounds of it your SD card should have a ton of free space...
I assume this is on your internal sdcard? Or RAM? Where your applications go? If its your ram, then delete some of the applications you have installed. If its your internal SD card then try deleting the application data that applications download automatically. Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm SD Maid system cleaner, it essentially does what I previously proposed for you.

Ummmm
I think it's the internal SD card.
Specifically: I am using ADownloader and whenever I try to download something now it says there is no space (despite frantic deleting on my part).
And I have a calendar app which this morning was telling me it couldn't update data as there was no space on the device.
I'll try what you suggest and if there is an error message, I'll make a note and let you know exactly what it says.
Thanks, again.

Stuart, storage is not RAM.
As I said earlier it sounds like your internal storage is full. Please give figures of capacity&used for:
Internal Storage
ROM
SDCARD
okay...
25.85 G capacity
25.06 G used
Free 791.81 M
13.42 G is music which is surely not much and 9% is Adownloader.
Help!
What next?
E
Installed Titanium Backup but it says:
"could not acquire root privileges.
Please verify that you ROM is rooted and incluces BusyBox and try again.
This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command."
I thought that Android Revolution meant that he had rooted it??
(if that's the right vocabulary I'm using....).
E
Ah except that under the error message it says:
System ROM 1.32GB (518 MB free)
Internal 2.26 GB (426 MB Free)
SD card 27.1 GB (830 MB free)
Does that help?
E
Can you take a few screen shots of the SD usage? I should have a good understanding of what needs to be deleted. Or you can wipe your SD card and transfer your music over once that's done?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Okay I've done some searching and it seems that the best thing you can do is make a copy of your SD card on to your PC and then wipe it and transfer the data back. This seems to be a problem, but will most likely be fixed with a future update.

I am trying to take screen shots as per the instructions but need a signal to get the auto-upload to work so that I can get them from phone onto here.
But, in summary, most of the 25 GB is music (67.9%).
E
Hi. Sorry, but how do I transfer the contents of the SD onto my computer?
I can connect using the cable and then... just drag and drop all the files?
And then... what do I do to wipe it on the phone and restore it?
Told you I was a non-teccie person!
Thanks,
E
Yup just drag and drop. Go to storage and then erase phone storage.

[Q] Insufficient space while installing from Play Store

Hello,
Sometimes when I try to download from the Play Store I get an error of Insufficient space.
I guess it's because the low internal memory.
What can I do?
Thanks.

Yes I get this many times. Go through all your apps and clear their cache...
Uninstall apps you don't need.
@mjt Well, it's pretty obvious. I mean, if there's a way so it won't download to the internal storage because it has small capacity.
Perhaps you might have stated clearly what you were asking for.

Hi,
I'm new to this website being directed to it by a colleague when he heard my problem. I am not an expert but the following is relevant, I think, to this thread:
My HTC One has two partitions.
One partition (called "App Storage") has a capacity of 6.76GB with 761MB used by "Apps" and 5.80GB used by "Other" leaving a miserable 219MB available.
The other partition (called "Phone Storage") has a capacity of 25.24GB with 142MB used by "Apps"; 14.78 used by "Music"; 85.22MB used by " Photos & Videos"; 1.32MB used by "Downloads" with 25.02GB available.
I am getting messages of low storage. In addition, I now cannot download anymore Apps and get messages about being unable to Sync eMails.
Thus the following questions:
1 Is there meant to be two partitions? This phone has been in for "repair" twice in the last 12 months.
2 If there is meant to be two partitions, why can I not transfer data from the "Apps Storage" to the "Phone Storage"?
3 It's been suggested that the "Apps Storage" contains the operating system. When the phone was bought, it used "Jelly Bean" which had a size that was OK for the "Apps Storage". Mine has "Kit Kat" which, I understand, is much larger in size.
To me, it seams crazy that the "Apps Partition" is so small and that Apps can be stored in either partition. Any solutions/thoughts would be appreciated. BTW. Vodafone has told me that this is the first time they have come across this problem and that I would have to pay them for a solution or else dump the phone and get a new one!!!
Any thoughts appreciated
Thanks
