So like the majority of us, I recently got the "Low Memory" error message.
I looked into the problem and ended up deleting my many text messages which fixed the problem. I then thought, something isnt right. So I did some more research into the problem and found an app called NES- NotEnoughSpace which looked pretty promising so I bought it.
I followed the steps to create another partition so I can move the heavy hitter apps to this new partition and free up space. I tried creating a partition on the /emmc and on the SD, both seemed to be successful (tried various sizes from 100mb to 1000mb)
When I tried to move the big app (netflix) to this new partition, the program tells me "unable to retrieve partition size." I have contacted the developer and after a few back and fourth emails he pretty much said well i have no idea whats going on and stopped replying.
My question is, has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it? if it makes a difference, when I use Partitions Info Lite I get a message saying "you have too many partitions, maybe because of Apps2SD" although I havent used Apps2SD.
Any ideas?
Thanks guys.
This has been a problem with my device since the very begining, and I would like to know if it's a general problem with Android, if it's a specific problem with the Wildfire S, or if it's just that god hates me and he gives me the devices with all the horrible bugs (see this thread for my other inexplicable bug that no one else seems to have).
Sometimes, when I go into the market and try and download app updates, the update goes through it's process of installation, the progress bar fills up and everything... then right as it's about to finish I get an error. "Update failed, please try again." It's very inconsistent too, sometimes I'll try and download an update a few times, and on the third attempt it gets it. Other times the app won't be able to update for months at a time. My mobile has been trying to get an update for "Cut the Rope" for over 3 weeks now. It gets so annoying I turn the WiFi off because he keeps throwing "Updates Available!" notifications at me that are completely useless to me.
Anyone else have this? Or is my WF-S just cursed?

Try clearing your cache. How much room have you got on your cache partition and in your data paritions?
It has to download a 15 meg or whatever installer for Cut the rope, then unpacking it then install it then delete the original installer. That takes more than 15 megs.
How do I clear the cache?
Also, can't it use my microSD? I have a 32GB card in there.

Use it for what? Can you give me some details? Is your phone S-OFF, rooted, etc?. How much internal memory do you have right now, etc.

You said that when an app is downloaded it needs to first download a 15 MB "cache partition", I was wondering why it can't use some of the space on the microSD. As for rooting, I have a GSM Wildfire S, from what I understand those are difficult to Root... so no, I've never rooted it, and I don't think it's S-Off (I'm not sure how to check that...)
I think I have 31 MB of free internal memory capacity...
pm setInstallLocation 2 and Apps2SD with Tutorial
Forget all you heard from me before as it seems to have served to confuse you which is fine. No worries.
Read this thread
Where it says to type "adb shell pm setInstallLocation" instead to be safe type:
"adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2" which tells the phone to try to install an app to your sd card by default. 0 is auto and 1 is internal.
Keep in mind that it doesn't move 100% of the app to the phone. App libraries, Dalvik cache data and application cache data will stay on the internal memory but it will buy you some space.
That's it.
PS:
Go somewhere and get your phone XTC-Clipped. You will have a lot more options to create space such as Link2SD which moves the apps, app libraries and dalvik cache files to a second external partition you create.
The nice thing about it is DOES allow you to move widget apps and they work.
Another nice thing about it is when you put your phone into usb mass storage mode, even though the primary partition on it with all your own data, pics etc, gets unmounted in the phone and unusable, the second partition doesn't unmount and you can still run all your apps that are linked to it.
Get clipped! If you have enough for a 32 GB card you have enough to spend $20 to get your phone clipped.
Now
When you are done this REBOOT your phone.
Go to this Android Marketplace link and download apps2sd
WATCH the video tutorial and then start moving apps off your internal memory to your SD card.
Beware not to move things that have widgets you want to use like say Doubletwist music player or Battery Monitor. The widgets will no longer function.
Somewhere in that program is a clear application cache choice as well. Clean up your cache for more room.
30 megs is not enough to download AND install Cut The Rope to your internal memory plus your auto sync will stop working when you drop below 18 megs or so of internal space.
Buy yourself some S-ON room with that setup.
If you want to move individual programs to or from the SD card to the phone and back, etc, you can go to /Settings/Applications/Manage/ scroll to and click on the application in question and choose the option to "Move to Phone" or "Move to SD Card".
Cheers.
I see... and this is all low risk right? I mean, getting updates to Cut the Rope would be nice, but it's not the biggest priority in the world, lol.
Also... I'm working on getting that Clip, if I have to I might just buy one... 67$ would still be cheaper than going out to buy a Nexus (from what I hear those are the easiest to Root). This clip would work with a GSM device right? That's how it does it's thing, by plugging into the SIM slot?
I have E4GT with Caulkins 2.9.1.
I have the following storage available on my device:
SD Card 24.25GB
USB Storage 3.25 GB
Device Memory 1.23 GB
I get the following error when trying to update apps, or install new apps:
"There is insufficient space on this device"
I have gone into settings>apps>google play> clear cache. -> no change
I have downloaded App Cache Cleaner app and cleared all cached files. -> no change
The error message is a lie written by a lazy programmer. What's actually happening is that the installation is trying to copy or move a file and can't. To circumvent this problem I have to enter root explorer and look for files related to the program I'm trying to upgrade and delete them. Sometimes I just find dangling files which aren't really needed; other times I have to delete the whole shebang and reinstall the program from scratch. One process that I've noticed can sometimes cause this problem is the auto-Odex routine that is available in the Development folder.
Bottom line though is that this problem has NOTHING to do with your available memory space.

How do I find dangling files in explorer. Is there a was for me to determine which ones are wasted files?
before i read your reply i went into recovery and wiped cached and dalvik cache, thought it worked, because i was finally able to install or update about 3 apps, but then got the same error on the 4th app.
so those steps that have been suggested by others on different devices but with similar errors, did not resolve this issue on E4GT.
thanks for any additional help.
This may help http://bit.ly/GNQOZh take a read. I fought this a while ago and went nuts till I did what I describe.
It's usually, but not always, as simple as looking for files with the name of the program imbedded. The most recent program for me was AudioGalaxy.... so I just searched for and deleted any reference to the program that didn't look essential.
If you're REALLY stumped, then download a program from the Market like Log Viewer, which shows you the real-time system log of your Android operating system. That's how I discovered that a failed file copy was being misinterpreted as a full disc in the first place. It also will show you the name of the file being copied or moved and into which directory. Helpful hint: cut and paste the log into something like Notepad for easier reading.
By all means empty out your caches... but only to remove a potential file that's causing you a problem. Like I said, you haven't run out of free space.
Good luck!
A common source for this error is also that there are partitions on your phone that are not visible in the system settings, but which can fill up too.
If you open a console on your device, i.e. with terminal emulator, and type "df" you should see every partition and how much space is free on it.

App Cache Cleaner isn't really that thorough.
Try SD Maid.

You 'cleared data' on the media and still had this issue? http://mikemartinezonline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/03.png I've had this issue a few times with a few people- again it just happed to me yesterday! Seems that the media storage, media hub, oovoodo, and some others were taking up huge amounst of space. In fact my media storage was at 800MB until I cleared it. Especially noticed this for me after adding and removing media and swapping different sd cards.

I cleared the app cache there, and still had the issue. I also went into recovery and cleared cache, dalvik cache.
I didn't try the SDMaid method, so if someone else has this same problem, that may be a place to try.
I ended up starting with scratch with my device, and just upgraded to calkulin 2.9.2.
now my device is functioning as expected, and i can finally install angry birds space...
Well same problem shows up again.
updated to Calkulin 3.0, in hopes to resolve the problem, but still no go.
insufficient space when trying to install or update app from google play.
SD Card: 3.25GB Free / 29.7 GB
USB Storage: 7.29 Free / 11.50 GB
Device: 1.29 GB Free.
It's kind of annoying, is this something that would be resolved by going back to stock. This is getting a bit annoying.
thanks again.
Which app?
Edit: Have you tried clearing data for google play in settings/applications/all yet?

In my another post I reported the SD card space will lost by unknown reason, some of guy in this forum has confirmed it.
And now some users have found one reason that may cause it.
You can do test yourselves to see is it happen to you.
1. Make sure your oneX SD free space is more than 5G, otherwise after test you may have problem.
2. Check your sd card free space and write it down.
3. Connect one X to your pc by usb disk mode. copy one file (any size of file) from pc to X. no need copy big file.
4. disconnect one x from pc. And check on phone to see current SD free space.
If you are lucky, the free space is go down just the same size of the file you copied to it.
If you are not you will see additional 1G space disappeared. Yes if it has problem you will looe 1G, it always 1G not other number.
Try yourself and give the feedback. It maybe just one reason cause space lost, but it is east to find now.

I lost 4gb in "bad sectors", you can check it with windows chkdsk.
Formatting the sd card is the only way to get the bad sectors back. It's been described in other threads.
chkdsk /f /r to recover bad sectors wont work.
yes I have format SD yesterday and get all space back. But not sure will it happen again or not.

Interesting choice of words. I move a lot of music, pics, and docs between my PC and my phone and never noticed what you described. To test it, I just moved a PDF file from my PC to the phone via USB and storage decremented by the size of the file.
It's to the point now that everyone's loaded up their phones with a ton of different apps. I have 82 downloaded apps installed. As with every other Android phone, a specific app or combination of apps can cause strange behavior. So "luck" may not have anything to do with your storage issue. Your phone could have a defect in its NAND memory, but it could also be an app or utility you're using; especially if it's not optimized for ICS or the way HTC's segmented memory.
This is from Paul at MoDaCo...
"One of the downsides of Ice Cream Sandwich is that, with its one contiguous on-board memory, there is no option to connect this to your computer as good old ‘mass storage’. The One X gets around this by partition it’s memory in two blocks - the old style ‘/data’ partition which comes in at 2.11GB (where your apps and data go if you don’t ‘move to SD’) and the virtual / sdcard partition totaling 25.24GB, which can be accessed via mass storage! Personally, I can’t decide whether it’s better to have that one big space and be limited to MTP or to have this solution... but for people wanting to easily drop content on their device, mass storage is definitely a big plus."
Does it happen if you completely restore your device and try it without adding your own apps? If it doesn't, it's something you've done to the phone not vice versa.
Hm that's strange...
I have 3,14 GB in bad sectors. Is it not due to detaching the device before it's unmounted (ejected)?
No such problem.
Tried 2 times. Once with a 280k file and another time with 6M+ file.
Did you change the connection back to charge only before you pulled the USB cable?
Actually I have been moving files in and out of my HOX (with PC) all the time. My total still shows 25.24G for the phone storage.
In fact I did the other test you mentioned in another thread. Property showed a number that was larger that all the files selected (ctrl-A). That was contrary to what you found out.

Have you copied a file to your phone before? What does checkdisk say when you attach your device?
It is indeed necessary to unmount the device before unplugging it from USB. Because if there's any writing to the device, it could result in data corruption.
I just pull out the phone from usb cable. How can I change to charging then pull out?
The issue I described not happen to me after I format the SD. It happen to other users I know.

Although I'm in a similar situation to others in this thread I'm not sure it's caused in the same way, so a bit of clarification would be great.
First of all, my situation is as follows.
My mass storage currently has a hidden directory called 'System data' which is taking up a whopping 15gb of space, leaving me with very little space to use. You can see what is taking up the space on your phone with DiskUsage (sorry can't post links yet).
After doing a bit of searching around the issue there doesn't seem to be a specific cause but perhaps uploading files from your PC could have been the reason it happened to me, I probably uploaded about 6 or 7gb worth of videos and albums since I got my phone.
I found a few threads around this issue, I can't post links but if you search for 'system data size android' you should find some similar topics.
The two solutions which seem to be viable are to either factory reset your phone or to root your phone then grant an explorer application superuser rights to delete the 'System data'.
However I'm not sure these solutions will actually fix the original issue as oppose to just stopping it from happening for the time being.
Can someone else check DiskUsage and see if they have an overly large 'Systems data' folder then report back please.

You shouldn't just pull out the phone from USB cable, because there is a chance data is being written to the device (umount in linux, eject mass storage device in windows), as is the case with flash memory. You also shouldn't change to charging, because that can also corrupt the data, as it is the same thing as pulling the USB cable out.
Nevertheless, this probably doesn't explain the bad blocks problem. I don't remember pulling out my phone before ejecting it, but still I have 3GB of bad blocks...
Can anyone else run the checkdisk program and check the amount of bad blocks? Just connect the phone as USB storage device; start -> cmd and type 'chkdsk X:' (where X is the drive letter where the phone is mounted to)

This I am not too sure. The phone should be smart enough to know it can't just change to charge only if there is data transfer.
In fact, when you change to charge only you will see a message on the phone screen saying preparing phone storage.
I used chkdsk, there is 1G (1048576) in bad sector. I have since tried copying files into the phone a few times, and the bad sector number never changes (after I have disconnected and reconnected the usb).
Here we go,
The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume HTC STORAGE created 01/01/2011 21:00
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.
26,470,048 KB total disk space.
288 KB in 8 hidden files.
28,064 KB in 867 folders.
11,210,816 KB in 6,979 files.
14,680,064 KB in bad sectors.
550,784 KB are available.
32,768 bytes in each allocation unit.
827,189 total allocation units on disk.
17,212 allocation units available on disk.
So this could be due to disconnecting without doing it safely as I charge my phone via my PC at work each day...
I don't really feel comfortable rooting my phone now due to that customer service chat thread about warranties so I guess a factory reset and then making sure I safely remove the phone each time from the PC is my only option.
One interesting thing about the chkdsk is that it says:
Volume HTC STORAGE created 16/11/2061 6.05 PM
I have a sdcard prepared some 50 years in the future.

I have 3,145,728KB being reported as bad sectors. I'm guessing since your results are so similar to mine they aren't really bad sectors. More than likely they're either protected files, protected disk space, or something in HTC's unique configuration of storage (see above) that's not being read correctly by CHKDSK. If we all get the same result it's probably not an issue with the device itself.
P.S. - If someone does a hard reset (w/o loading any apps) and CHKDSK still reports 3ishGB in bad sectors that would confirm it's an issue with CHKDSK reading the phone's storage.

That's a lot!
Well, I don't think this problem has anything to do with unsafely disconnecting the device, this shouldn't give bad blocks; at the utmost corrupt files.
Then again, I don't know that much about the subject. I believe the memory controller keeps track of bad sectors on a lower level, and bad sectors are mostly caused by damage/faulty hardware. If we'd really have bad sectors, a high level format wouldn't solve the problem (which it did, appearantly). So I think this problem is software related, or related to the memory controller. But again, I know very little about this.

I'm not really very clued up either, just learning as I'm going along.
It seems like too much of a coincidence that the size of the system data file on the storage card is pretty much exactly the same size as the amount of bad sectors shown from the chkdsk.
It seems there's a more overarching issue at hand here which is slowly affecting more of us.
BarryH_GEG - I think that's what we need to find out, what files are actually in that System data directory, if anyone has root access they may be able to dig deeper with an explorer app.
Supaiku - Yup, System data is directly below Storage Card but doesn't show up on any explorer apps, only when using DiskUsage.

Yeah I think you're right. Still, it's strange that seedoubleu is reporting to have more than 14GB of 'bad sectors', what would be hidden there?
I still think this has something to do with the device's memory controller, because the 3+ GB really isn't accessible.
When I boot up my phone, the first thing it says that there's not enough space to complete some kind of action(see attached picture below). I have more than 2GB free space on sdcard and almost 6GB free space on external sd, even in file system root I have 1gb/2gb space.
I have cm10.
what does it mean? what does it want? and why does it says that? and what "action" does it talk about??
I wouldnt care if it will be just this message, but since it started this, the phone seems to be more unstable(sometimes it loses wifi/cell signal, have to press lock button 3 times to wake up,and stuff..), so I decided to make a clean reinstall anyway, but it would be great if some of u had any ideas what causes this
I've experienced something similar. I use to mount the storage on my win7 laptop and use to copy/delete files from them. Suddenly it was not letting me copy anymore telling me that the storage is out of space and when i saw it it showed free space which got me confused.
So i went ahead and set windows to show all hidden files and OS files. On the storage there was a "recycle bin" having 1.6 gb of data . I deleted the folder and all was fine.
Maybe your's is a completely different issu,e but you can check for the above.
