After finally getting music onto my HD7 (long story), here are my thoughts on what is turning into a nightmare handset for me.
1. Set up - First of all, the Connector for Mac software will only access iTunes libraries on a local computer, so if like me you have your media stored on a NAS, you're in the sticky stuff. This also goes for USB sticks and external HDDs.
2. Zune - After finally getting some music on to the phone, I checked out the Zune player component. Coming from an i-device, it took a while to find my way around it, but on the whole, it's quite a nice interface. One thing I don't like is when browsing by artist, instead of giving you the albums to pick, it just jumps straight into playing all songs by the artist. Not a big deal, but slightly annoying.
*EDIT* Actually, scrap that last comment. Double tapping on the artist brings up the artist's albums. Excellent!
3. Sound quality - I use some high quality Denon 'buds and have to say, the sound quality is so much better than my iPhone. It's also very loud. Unfortunately, you do get some background hiss when you're flicking between the icons and have no music playing. There was also some feedback as mentioned below in point 4, but when NOT on a call.
4. Call quality - I found this to be pretty decent, UNLESS you're using headphones. You know that feedback ditt-ditty-ditt noise you get when you put a cellphone next to a radio? Well I got that constantly when on a call. Not sure if this is a fault with my phone itself or whether they're all like this. Either way, it's not a good advert for HTC.
5. The screen - After reading about the 'screen tearing' and wondering what it was all about, I now have first hand experience of it. The handset is only 1 day old, so I'm not exactly happy. Does anyone know if this is a hardware of software fault? Have the Mozart or Omnia 7 had the same problem?
6. No gapless playback - A big one for me is this. I've got 200 or so live/dj mix albums, so not having this feature has pretty much made this phone worthless to me. I just don't understand why MS haven't implemented it. If there are no plans to add this, then my HD7 will have to be returned.
Right, that's my take on the HD7. Admittedly, it's not exactly positive, but I have been honest and hope that it will give prospective buyers something to think about.
If I'd have known about some of these things in advance, I would have given the WP7 format a wide berth. This is a shame, as the UI is excellent and there are so many good things about it.

1. good to know, i didn't know this and hopefully MS will improve on it as they threw it together pretty quick, but who knows... doesn't zune detect the files on NAS though? mine does (well videos anyways, and i've got all sorts of videos formats which all worked), maybe try the k-lite codec pack and see if zune will pick it up then?
2. cool! i'm still getting use to zune myself. i found that if you try and sync an item, and then decide not to sync, there isn't any easy way to just clear it from queue. what you have to do is goto the device, then to sync groups, and remove it from there... bit od, but worked it out.
3. the hissing is most likely hardware related not software related. it is possible that the software could be outputting something to check if it's alive, but i think it's more hardware related.
4. same as 3, i don't believe this is OS related but more hardware related. best thing to do is ask to borrow someone's samsung/LG phone and see if you experience the same?
5. screen tearing? would be hardware as well... i have a HTC trophy which was the phone to show all these screen defects, but luckily i haven't noticed it with mine.
6. gapless playback, that is OS related... and yea they should implement this. Some were saying that it could be to do with the i3 tags? Could you try something for me? try ripping a cd using zune and then see if it plays gapless on zune, if it does, sync it to the phone and see if it's gapless. note though that cross fade (start playing just before the end of the previous sone) isn't available from what i've read.

He's using the Connector for Mac instead of the Windows based Zune client. The Connector for Mac is still Beta if I recall correctly so issues like this are gonna get solved eventually I guess.
Basically your complaining about software issues or using a phone as a music player.
Im on my third day of using HD7 all day long and have no problems with it at all.
Zune loaded all my photos and music.
Have not had any screen problems, that could be your one hardware problem.
Sound is fine, though could be louder
No LED alert for notifications. My one complaint.
Everything runs smooth and fast.
I have to say its a nice piece of hardware.

For someone who uses their phone primarily as a music player (why carry two things in your pocket), no, I am not kidding you. I could go on all day how iPod/iPhones work with this without problems, but we'd be covering old ground.
Also, it's not just live/DJ mix albums that are gapless these days. I don't know if you listen to a lot of continuous albums, but having a 1 or 2 second gap in a seamless DJ mix kind of defeats the object. It works on the Zune players (and iDevice), so why not on WP7?
To those who suggested using Zune PC to rip new files. I'm on a Mac, so at the moment the Zune software isn't available. I will try a 3rd party ripper though, which might give a different outcome to iTunes. I did try .M4A and .MP3 files from iTunes, but got the same result.
With regard to Connector for Mac, the external drive problem is being looked at and will hopefully be fixed when it moves from a beta release.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone else with a WP7 device, but will try another HD7 in the shop to see if the call interference is there. As mentioned, the earphones act as an antenna for the radio, so maybe it is this that is causing it. After digging around, I've found the screen tearing may be a driver fault and not the hardware itself.
One other minor (good) quirk, is that my Shure iPhone MPA remote/mic partially works with the HD7. It can only stop/start music, but a bonus nonetheless.
New phone
It's interesting each time a new or updated OS and phone comes out we don't really know what to expect or what the limits of the device will be. I went thru this last year (and every other previous year) with Win 6.5 on my Dash 3G. In the end I managed to get 100+ apps installed and the phone did everything except my laundry. I have a good feeling about WP7 (and my HTC Surround)....I've only had it 3 days and I've customized it, I see more (free) apps every day, and I will bet anyone MS will be implementing a lot of tweaks and new features i.e. spending a lot of money to insure these phones will compete with the others. We are all tweakers here and we want to push the limits..a little patience may be necessary.....it's only 3 days old

Is your music DRM? With the Zune HD gapless works great as long as it's not with DRM so with my zune pass everything from the pass fails at gapless but works fine with the music I brought to the table without drm

Why don't you support this idea on the WP7 wish list here
http://windowsphone7community.userv...ral/topics/85023-i-suggest-you-/filter/recent
Done.
None of my music is DRM as I've only ever downloaded 2 tracks in the last 5 years in iTunes.
Most of my music is from CD rips, with the occasional BitTorrent download.
I've still not had a chance to check another HD7 to see if it also produces feedback through the earphones. Has anyone else with an FM radio equiped handset ever had the same thing happen?
honestly I was shocked at the quality of calls on my HD7. I wouldn't call it decent, I'd call it excellent.

is that coming from an ex-iphone user?
There are many problems with Wp7, but people have to remember this is a 1st release and only a couple of weeks old. I've had mine for 3 weeks and dispite the shortcuming it's my best phone yet.
I've only had the screen flicker problem once in Zune.
When you say gapless are you talking nearly instant vs absolutely instant or 2 seconds vs nearly instant/absolutely instant?
I have a few albums, some Linkin Park ones in particular that are compiled as a continuous album and i tried it first on the PC zune player. the transition was instantaneous. Then i synced the same tracks to my HTC Surround and played a few and there was about a tenth of a second skip before the next song started. Is that what you are talking about?
*Update*
I've made some progress with the HD7.
1. Finally got Connector for Mac to work properly. It now mirrors any changes in iTunes (eg adding media, playlists, etc) and accesses my NAS no problem. It also syncs ok. Previously I had to use the iTunes library on a local drive, but now it works with the NAS. I had to do a fresh install of iTunes, but it seems to be working now.
2. I've not had any further screen tearing issues. There were a few updates to the HTC apps/front end showing up, so I installed them. Not sure if this has fixed it, or whether I've just been lucky.
3. Gapless playback - Hopefully MS will implement this in the next OS update. I take gapless to mean totally seamless. At the moment, I get gaps of 1-2 seconds at least. Obviously on shuffle or with a regular album it's not a problem, but with an album like Radio Soulwax by 2manyDJs (45 tracks in 60 minutes), it's kind of annoying.
4. The interference! I'm going back to O2 at lunchtime today to try another handset (providing they have one). Still getting that noise when using earphones (my Denon or the supplied headset) and this is noticable with calls, when listening to Zune or the radio, and even when there is no music playing.
Do any other HD7 (or Desire HD) users have this problem??
Note: This is ONLY when using the headphones.
Thanks.
I don't know how you are getting such a long delay in between tracks.. Its barely a split second between mine. Not even close to 1-2 seconds.
Further update.
Popped into O2 at lunchtime. The guy knew exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned this interefence noise, and said they'd had a few others with the same problem.
Anyway, swapped the phone and gave the new one a try in the shop. This worked fine, so hopefully it was just a one-off for me.
Re: Gapless - I was probably exaggerating with the 1-2 seconds, but it's around 0.5-1 second. There's no click and chageover, it's a definite gap.

Yes, actually they look like a quite faulty hardware maker...
Software is definitely better from HTC.
i haven't had a bad run with HTC, but I would have easily swapped to samsung (omnia 7) if the carriers here really made it worth while...
I have an HD7 and an HTC Radar. I was able to watch videos over my bluetooth headphones (Motorola S10HD) on my Radar. I was excited to find out that Mango had fixed it so I tried to do the same on my Mangoed HD7. No luck, videos still play through the phone's speaker as opposed to the bluetooth headphones. So is it a hardware problem, or can the drivers of the two phones be compared and ultimately finally fix this issue for HD7 users?

Good to know that about the Radar. Hopefully they will eventually get a fix to the older devices.
But, it is one less thing that people can hold against Windows Phone 7 when picking a device.
Couldn't this be caused by the older Bluetooth hardware on the phones? Maybe the OEMs included a lackluster Bluetooth chip since pre-Mango didn't support this.

3. Jst like in sensation the screens are by two manufacturers.
4. when u open HTC hub no theme, wallpaper etc , means nothing ready as of now. where as in sensation all was ready.
5. HTC scny and htcsense.com on pc is still useless after much proven failure.
6. They promised unlocked bootloaders and here we are again after sensation on same work "S-OFF".
Can sm1 plz add to this what they feel....
Personally i feel this device is a hasty step to catch market before "S3".

They are under no obligation to give you beats headphones with the device. Just because the software is included doesn't mean the headphones will be. The various networks that are giving the headphones away are only doing it as a promotional gift to draw in more customers. The headphones HTC supplied are actually rather good anyway, and 'Beats' in nothing more than an over-hyped, over-priced EQ setting with sub-par quality headphones to go with it.

Not entirely sure what you mean by this, but I absolutely love Sense. It's not laggy anymore and the animations are absolutely fantastic. Failure is the last word I'd use to describe it.
If you are referring to the HTC sync thing on the PC, then yes, it's terrible. You can do everything you need to without it though, so simply don't use it!

We can easily unlock the bootloader via HTCdev. Unlocking your bootloader is NOT the same as having 'S-OFF' and they never said anything about giving us that option. S-OFF has to come from an exploit, I believe, which we will most likely get over time.

I think you're probably right about them rushing to release it before the S3, but almost every single high-end phone is the same. They always push for an early release to beat whichever phone is considered the main competition, whether it be an Android device or an iPhone. But as rushed devices go, this one is very solid indeed. No software or hardware problems (for me, at least) and the build quality is fantastic. There's the overheating issue and battery life problems, but no phone is ever going to be perfect and will only get better over time
My previous phone was the lg optimus 2x, had that from day 1 it came out, the same as this phone! If HTC have rushed it they have done a mighty good job in my opinion, cos the o2x is still a pile of ****e and its been out over a year. I would never get another LG.
Just give them time to iron out the creases

4.Wallpapers you can find all over the web,or you have apps like Zedge where you can download wallpapers, notification sounds, ringtones, etc. Here as well i don't see a problem. And pardon me,do you think that the themes will be so different? You have to realize that all themes have the same icons, the same widgets and so on.If you want to realy customize your phone you have to download Apps that are capable of changing the appearance of the phone.
5.I don't use HTC Sense because is verry limited. You can find a lot of apps out there on the web which are free ( Wondershare Mobile GO,Moborobo, etc).Again i don't see the problem here.

You have to realize that the phone is brand new, some of us barely started to get used to it.I only got it 9 days ago.You just need to be pacient and HTC will solve eventualy all of the problems (or at least the big ones that are now with some phones). You can't expect that in 3 weeks since the lauch of the phone HTC can solve all the problems. It is absoluthy impossible.Imagine that there are some versions of the OS out there (1.xx.401,1.xx.209,etc),so,for that every version they have to came up with updates to fix them, not to mention that are even branded phones which the software updates are pushed trough the operators first to inspect them, and after that they are lauched for users.

6.You can unlock the bootloader at htcdev, nobody sayd anything about S-OFF.It's quite a difference between unlocking your bootloader and S-OFF.

The screen flickering issue is a graphics drivers issue and is also most likely behind the notification corruption and funky banding in the camera app. None of the professional reviewer's units had it and, based on polls, 75% of production phones don't have it. Personally, I believe the chips Nvidia provided for early testing were more uniform than production chips and that this whole issue caught HTC off guard. Hopefully the delay in releasing a fix is HTC being thorough so they don't have to release four updates for Teg3-releated issues the way Asus did. The S4-based XL and S are having no similar issues so if you want to assign blame look to Nvidia. And those devices were no more or less "rushed" than the X.
Outside of that the build issues can be chaukled up to production line teething pains and should go away fairly quickly.
None of this should be foriegn to any of those that got one of the first XEU SGS2's last year.
Sense 4.0 is surprisingly tight considering it's a re-write vs. an update. That's also probably why there aren't more themes available right now. You don't hold up the launch of a product for non-necessary cosmetic features.
The inclusion or exclusion of Beats headphones is a marketing and financial decision and has nothing to do with the timing of the One X's launch.
I wish more threads were started to discussing things that work rather than things that don't. I traveled with my phone this weekend and varying conditions are a good test to see if h/w and s/w hang together well. It peformed better than my SGS2 which has been updated at least a half dozen times. If you guys tracked the launches of the GN, Prime, and Xperia S, outside of the flickering issue, the One X is holding its own just fine.
i don't know about these htcsense and hub things, and i probably wouldn't use them if they worked right. the different screen thing is a problem because a lot of people may want the one they don't have. Beats Audio is garbage to me. i would put Beats headphones in the trash. i use $500 Sennheiser and play lossless audio files. Beats may be good for you if you play mp3s and have free headphones, but i'm a musician. i hope the s-off thing gets fixed so we can have custom kernels. was it rushed? most things are. if you aren't happy, then get a refund and buy something else. mine gets here Tuesday and if i have a serious problem with it, i won't be typing on xda, i will be at my bank filing refund paperwork.

Right or wrong, this is a decision HTC made and has made in the past. It shouldn't surprise anyone and plays no role in the timing of the release of the phone. From a logic perspective, sourcing from two different vendors helps reduce supply chain issues in the event one of them has a problem. I saw a warm display and if it wasn't next to a cool display would have been fine with it. The non-XDA masses probably don't care.
i would put Beats headphones in the trash.

Like Beats? Max out the bass in an equalizer. It's a marketing gimick just like Monster cables at three times the price of ordinary high-quality cables that are produced side-by-side in the same factories.

I'm a little more patient than you. I'd give an HTC update a chance first. But I don't martyr myself on forums because sympathy can't fix problems.
1. QC is bad. It is a rushed production for sure. My phone works perfect. Even when I was on 1.26. Yet, I am aware many others have issues. Make HTC pay for poor QC by asking for an exchange. They will oblige.
2. Beats is not my cup of tea but your argument is like saying buying a game that has the label 'Compatible with Windows 7' should include Windows 7 just because it bears the label.
3. Many companies get supplies of LCDs from different manufacturers. It's normal everyone is doing it. I was an iPhone 4 user and used 2 handsets. Trust me, the difference in quality (color temp) was so massive it is startling. And there is nothing Apple could do for me because its just how supply chain works.
4. Never bothered with HTC hub.
5. S-Off is being worked on by 3rd party people. Be patient.
TLR - If you have bad screen issues get a replacement. If you feel cheated, get a refund. The bottom line is you have to be happy.

Flickering is not softwae issue i can bet on that... i replaced my handset same series but different lot.. and the flicker now is absent..it is indeed faulty hardware used issue....

But mate if u see and compare both screens side by side there is huge image and quality output difference... one is yellow tinge and one is sparkling white.... i personally prefer single type white atleast no matter who makes it... Dt u agree??

Indeed i would be a little pissed if i had some problems with it because i'm kinda of a lazy person when it comes to do the same thing over and over again, and i'm reffering here to copying contacts, setting up mail, etc.I'm so lazy i haven't reinstalled windows 7 on my PC since it camed out just because i'm to lazy to reinstall al the drivers, and setting up again how i like it,etc.
I think that the quality check was done, but as far as the screen flickering i think is a transport issue.Maybe the companies that transport this phones just throw them in the trucs and the screen gets affected somehow?I don't think that HTC is so dumb not to make a good quality check before releasing a product.
Hey Guys, I am VERY frustrated with this phone.
I have 2 pairs of awesome aftermarket phones that I have used for years on various phones to make and receive calls: Klipsch s4is and Bose E2s, which have worked on: iphone 4, iphone 4s, nexus one, LG G2x.
I just sold my 4s to get a GS3, and now, the headphones are not recognized by the phone app. WHen I dial out, I cant hear anything, and the mic doesn't register my sounds. There is no option for wired headset in the phone sources section of the phone app (which has a bluetooth option, and a speaker option, but not a wired headset option).
Is there any solution to this? If not, I'm immediately selling. I can't imagine that this is the most popular android device. I'm already dealing with the stock mail app not showing or syncing Exchange sub-folders, which is very, very annoying. Combine that with the headphone issue, and I'm already ready to bail. Please help!
Your gonna sell your phone because of a headset ? Buy a bluetooth headset on ebay and thats it.

Loyalty? What are you talking about. I'm about quality and features, not loyalty. In fact, to be loyal to a phone sounds completely wacko to me.
I'll repeat for everyone: I just called Samsung tech support. They have confirmed that aftermarket headsets DO NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
The also confirmed that: exchange sub-folders DO NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
You're telling me that is acceptable on their premier device? That is a joke. I will most definitely be selling this phone for one that supports the most basic, basic functionality.
BTW, I tested the phones on 5 different phones at the ATT and TMO stores and the Samsung kiosk at the mall. The headphones work on none of them. The 2nd tier customer support at Samsung has zero helpful information, and no date to fix. This is pathetic. I'll be getting rid of this phone now. If anyone wants a brand new white 32gb GS3 for TMO with an elago case and screen protector, let me know.

Interestingly, tier 2 Samsung support contradicted you this afternoon. They don't work on mine, and the support person confirmed the feature is not supported.

Her advice was also to buy a third party exchange app.
Have you tried them using a non touchwiz rom? That might be a solution
I have the same problem, but it only happens on "3 buttons" headset. If you use "one button" headset, it works fine with S3.
Example: I have Bose MIE2 (universal) and MIE2i (dedicated volume buttons for iPhone).
MIE2 (one button) does not disconnect when making calls, but MIE2i gets disconnected everytime when making call and I have to re-plug to make it work again.
My brother has piece of sh it headphones from Walmart with a built in answer button and mic. It works just fine...

I feel your pain. The first time I realized that my headsets didn't work with the S3 I was baffled. And it sucks that every time I'm listening to music with my earphones and I get a call, I have to pull the phone out and answer the call using the earpiece and mic on the phone. Totally stupid and frustrating. I hope it gets fixed soon. It's also really funny how the buttons work (one, not 3 on 3-button headsets like mine) to pause and skip tracks but the mic doesn't. Stupid.
On the Exchange Folders front, all folders do show up. The way I access them (I have multiple exchange accounts set up) is to hit the account drop down and then tap on show all folders. So the Samsung support person you talked to was wrong on that front.

My original Android wired headphones (that came with the Nexus One) work perfectly with the T-Mobile SGSIII to play music and make/receive calls. The call comes in, the music pauses and I answer the call, talk to the caller, hear them perfectly and end the call using the headset button. There something wrong with either your headset (I'm leaning in this direction) or your phone.

I have klipsch 4S Androids and they work fantastic on my SGS3. Personally, I love the headset and the Mic on it works great. I know klipsch say the iPhone ones don't work on android. But I agree, you should buy a different phone. You must like what you buy when you spend on a top of the line phone.

Have any of you tried using a Galaxy player as a bluetooth headset for the tablet to make phone calls? If so, how did you fare?
I'm thinking of picking up a used Galaxy player 3.6 to use as a headset paired to the 3g GN 10.1 I just ordered. I've never been a fan of bluetooth earpiece which have to remain in-ear constantly, I like the idea of answering a pocketable, phonelike alternative that I could also use to spot check emails while I leave the note in my backpack while commuting. I dont care about the performance of the player for gaming and the display size, obviously if I have the time to care about what im looking at I'd be whipping out the tablet. Just looking to see if anyone has done this and enjoyed it, or if I should just bite the bullet and buy a traditional BT headset.
Any suggestions on viable, handset-like alternative from other companies is welcome, too.
While looking into whether the GN 10.1 can be used for voice cell phone calls in the US, I stumbled across this handy - if weird - little bluetooth device.
I'll let the article on this "stylus-phone" speak for itself.

Holy crap thats cool. I might get one of those just for the sake of having all the available accessories. I'd propbably use something like that sparingly, because I'd need to A) Really keep track of that thing, and B) need to have the Tablet open in front of my to see who's calling. I'm proabably still leaning towards the Galaxy Player to to get the caller function. The 3.6 im watching on ebay is actually cheaper than the Bluetooth S Pen
I guess I go really go old school and get one of the OLD samsung Yepp mp3 players.. they had this functionality to, but with them I need a proprietary charger and I'd lose email checking. Dammit this is complicated. lol.
This would be really great to see come to fruition. I wonder if an app would need to be developed to properly pair the phone to the tablet.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
From my understanding, Its lees about an app than it is about the Bluetooth Profile. The Galaxy Players give you the proper Profile (plus earpiece and built in Mic) to do this affectively. You get caller ID, and headset functionality. You can pair phones to other phones but never have the option to set what type of profile youd like the pairing to utilize. Would/Could an app do this type of thing, or would it have to be a tweak/add to the bluetooth profile?
Lol, I never get too deep in this. When in doubt - throw money at the problem
