Do any of the 3 "major" AOSP ROMs (Deck, SM, CM7) fully support ext3 partitions on MicroSD cards "out of the box" without any mods? I know Deck & CM will allow for moving any apps to SD, I just want to know if they'll move them to the ext3 partition or to the FAT32 partition.
No, CM7 doesn't have ext support built in. Since deck is based on it, i doubt it does either. SM i'm not sure about, but I don't think so.
Add-ons like Dark Tremor do work though.
Thanks a bunch! As soon as I get around a computer I'll thank you via the button. I just wasn't sure. I wasn't sure if I should partition my SD card. Guess not.

I wouldn't say you shouldn't. If you need more space than you can get with any other method, it's a good way to go. I'm an apps junkie and I've got about 400 apps installed. You just have to do some extra steps to add it.

So i know on my magic i always had a Swap partition, EXT, and fat32...
Seems like when i got my Evo, the SD card only had a fat32 and no EXT.
When installing custom roms, Should i just go ahead and reformat the card with EXT or do we not need it on the Evo. From what i know of the EXT partition and working with my magic for so long, i would assume it still needs to be there but it was just odd that it wasn't there from the factory when i got my phone.
TIA
IMO, a2sd isn't necessary on this one
I have almost 60 apps installed (including the behemoth Google Earth), yes I know how ridiculous that is, and I still have over 200MB internal storage free.
The EXT2/3 and Swap partitions didn't come stock on your Magic, either.
It's up to you. Like nebenezer said, it's really not necessary on this device. The only reason I'm running a2sd is so that I don't have to mess around with reinstalling all my apps when testing out new ROMs. That's really the only reason at this point why a2sd would be an advantage. In fact, unless you're using a class 6 SD card (which the provided card is not), it actually probably slows down the phone a bit when launching applications.
Ahhh.. So EXT is pretty much only for A2SD? Thought there was some other info on there...
And i know what swap is..

pretty much, you can move dalvik to sd and I think data/data too but like CentroniX said unless you have a c6 or greater card your better off skipping a2sd on this phone.
Not having to reinstall your apps is convenient but when I flash a new rom I wipe EVERYTHING anyways. I always like to start with a clean flash so if there are any problems I know its not one of my apps. Plus titanium backup makes it very easy to restore everything.
Is apps2[ext]sd only for G1 users?
I am running virtuous rom and i'd love to move my apps to my 16gb sd.
Any thoughts on this?

Apps2sd and Apps2ext are two diffrent things. Froyo has apps2sd built into it, under applications/manage you can change the stroage location on apps that allow it, also there are some rooted apps2sd apps that allow you to move apps to the sd card, but all of these methods store the apps on the FAT format of the sd card. The old style apps2ext is only avalible on Enoms rom, it stores the apps on the ext. partition, so the ext. partition is mounted by the system and the phone see's it as internal storage. I was running Enoms rom before I flashed Gingerbread, and it worked great, just partition your sd card with a ext. file partition.
I'd love to see the real A2SD (not the Fat32 version) incorporated into the cooked Gingerbread builds.

Sweet! Somebody brought this topic back up. I've tried every style of a2ext, edited some, and nothing seems to work except Enom's rom. I love his rom and it's my main one but I hate not having the desire to switch due to the lack of a2ext for this phone. With other phones you just flash a package (like Darktremor) type a couple commands in terminal and you're done.
There's this stubborn concept about this phone - we have ~2GB of memory, why would we ever need a2ext? Well because those 2 gigs are not a full 2 and, well, because we can. If that's not what android and xda are about then why do they even exist? I'm not advanced enough to create the package but I have some skill, I'd jump right in with the right help... any takers?
I was looking for something that can allow me to manually move spacific apps to SD card.
Is there something that will allow me to do that?
I know there's the appext2sd but that makes the phone think that the SD card is the internal memory.

I am not hostile. I am just trying to understand why the internal SD card is all used up. When you set up the games, typically they have setting that will move the game data files to external SD.
On another note, despite the games, what else do you have on internal sd that's sizeable ?

im looking for the same thing, i have a 64gb card but the rom i am using it wont work with it (using wicked rom on tmo s3).
the card is exfat format and the apps2sd doesnt work...
i have like thousands of mp3s, games/aps and gps stuff etc thats taking up everything...
i was told that if i was to format the exfat to fat it will work just fine and the rom will read it like a normal sd card and we can use the apps2sd app and itll read the 64gb card as normal storage and we can keep the phones memory basically free?
some say yes and others no just want a definitive answer to this because i love the wicked rom and with a 64gb card..
so far i have been using a mod here that is called 11extsd2internalsd, which makes the sd card primary storage and the phones memory secondary.. would be nice not to have to use that and use the card as normal
thanks

Do a favor. Take the Sd Card to a PC and format under Windoz for Fat32. No Quick Format there.

Are you using a custom kernel? Wicked is stock based so it should be able to read exFat. If you are using a custom kernel, that may be why it doesn't work, it may not have the correct modules. (Especially if the kernel is md5 based. Wicked is LJC I'm pretty sure).
Either way though, if you reformat the card to Fat32, it will be more compatible across non touchwiz roms, and would probably be so for you now as well. But I'd use a stock kernel personally. Never had any real issues with them, and you'd probably get to use the card as it was intended.

Due to size limitations (GPads only coming in 16gb varieties) I am beginning to run low on space on my Gpad (v500 running cm11). However I have a 64gb microSD card and I would like to use this as much as I can to conserve space on the internal memory.
There are a few ways to solve this but I not fully know how to do this.
Firstly, is it possible install apps to microSD card? If so, how? I know some devices support this and some do not. My phone for example does not but I have heard that some people have had success with this.
Next, there are some rather large folders on my internal storage that I would like move to my sdcard however the apps that use those folder can only read them where they are currently located (cmupdates, ebooks, etc).
I read about symlinks and managed to make a few but the only place I was able to make a symlink was to /data/media/0. But the changes to that do not show up the apps which I believe read either /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. And for my SDcard I can get to it either in /mnt/media/sdcard1 or through /storage/sdcard1.
I tried and succeeded in making a link between /mnt/media/sdcard1/eBooks and /data/media/0/eBooks however the link does not show up in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0 and it does not show up in the apps, leading me to believe that is where the apps read the sdcard from.
If anyone can answer the above two questions or give any other suggestions for maximizing available space on my internal card please let me know.
Thank you!
I think most of your issues could be resolved with Link2SD (under 10 posts, can't post a link to Google Play).
You can also use an app called Foldermount. It's only $.99 ( if I recall correctly) for the unlocked version. This allows you to move any folder to SD card. I like it as it guides you thru the way and will move the data for you as well. Latest version has been updated to allow apps from play store to install properly. Well worth the $1 price.

These solutions did work for me, I am still tweaking to get it the way I like it especially since every time I update my Rom Link2SD has to generate new scripts. I can ready and write to the SD card just fine and I could before I started using this as well. I am not sure why you aren't able to write to your sd card. Could it be a bad SD card? Try plugging it into your computer.
I've tried 2 different SD cards both of which I can move files to and from on my computer. So I know it's not the card. I'm thinking maybe I should exchange it out for another day one...

Well, if you did it from your PC, it may be formatted NTFS, and you need them formatted FAT 32. Get it here; http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html Not only allows formatting almost any format xFAT, Fat32, NTFS, etc.. and you can partition them also which is not supported by Windows, but IS supported by most Android ROMs. I doubt there is anything wrong with your device.

I have been trying to fix the issue with Rom updates and link2sd. You have to provide the Rom (in my case cyanogenmod) a backup script so it can back up the files. I am planning on figuring it out at some point but if you get it before I do would you mind posting your script? Thanks!

So a follow up with this, I was able to get a script working. I don't know if this feature is unique to cyanogenmod or not but any script in /system/addon.d will execute itself during a rom install and be restored automatically if it was wiped. So using 50-cm.sh as an example I made a script called 11-link2sd.sh to perform the backup of the mount script for link2sd which is located in /system/etc/init.d/11link2sd.
I then had insert this script and my mount script into a cyanogenmod update and flash it in. But after that I tried flashing an update of cm11 to test it and it worked! Attached is my script which should also work for anyone who is able to flash it into their /system/addon.d folder.
I know there are many devices out there which don't allow this, but is there a workaround to get this working on my LG G Pad 8.3?
My device is rooted.
16gb is just not enough memory these days to have all the apps and games you want on the device at the same time. i have a 64gb external card and would love to use this space for app data.
I know there is a workaround where you can move the data you need to the external card and move it back when you want to use the app but in this day and age it seems ridiculous to have to do that!
any help would be greatly appreciated

Because your device has a primary external storage whcih is emulated from the internal storage. You can link the app in order to move its files to your sd card."
so i click ok to that, go back to my list of apps, long press on the app and click "create link" and it gives me the following message "secondary partition not found. make sure you have 2 partitions on your sd card and both are primary"

Not sure why anyone would want to restrict you to use Internal memory only on their device as it only makes it worth less....
Will this change naturally when an official 4.4.2 is released for this device?

I have no idea. From what I hear, apps won't perform quite as good if they're on the external storage. If that's the case, they may be afraid that it will ruin the user experience. I just put apps that don't demand a ton of performance on my SD card so I can't verify if that's true.
But I like choices, so I wish they'd make it easier with a notice that performance may suffer or something. Also, Google is behind Android, and they want you storing data in the cloud, not on your device. That's why none of the Nexus devices have external storage.

well storing data in the cloud is fine as long as its not data thats needed to run apps. one step forward 2 steps back!
this device is perfect (and IMO the best in its size at the moment) apart from 2 things
1) this sd issue right here
2) they should have given it an AMOLED screed instead of LCD

i am referring to the link you gave me. the instructions state not to make the partition larger than 2gb.
FolderMount is more what you want. It does not require a special format, and it moves the data which is what really takes up the space. For example Bards Tale has over 3.5GB of data, and it moves ALL of that. The applications themselves hardly take up any space. It even survives rom updates like updating CM11 nightlies for example. I uninstalled Link2SD. It didn't move much, and caused problems when I did ROM updates.

Tried, tested and confirm working on my V500 with NFS Most Wanted!!
One thing i noticed though is that the program "Disk Usage" still picks it up as data on device even though it is not there. Used SD card analyst in ES File explorer with root permissions and data is not on device.
This is fantastic!! i now have a potential 64gb of space!!
