On my evo 4g I had this problem installing various apps like angry birds etc. I tried a few tricks and googled it like crazy and I found one solution was to unmount the sd card install and then remount which was cumbersome. I found a better and seemingly permanent solution. Hook your phone up to your computer via usb and open your sd card. Inside they'll be a folder called "android secure " (without quotations). Open it and inside they'll be a file called smdl2.tmp or something very similar to that. I deleted that file from my sd card and problem solved with no adverse effects.
Edit. The file is smdl2tmp1.asec .delete that and your good.
I had the same problem, not being able to download apps from the market. I managed to get it working a little while ago with the following steps:
1. Dismount SD card
2. Download/install any app from market
3. Re-mount SD card
You should now be able to download apps without having to dismount/remount SD card.

Hopefully someone on here can help me. I've just been adding speecameras to the Tomtom app on my HD. The first set went on OK, but when I tried adding a second, then starting up the Tomtom app to check all was OK, it came back with the following message:
"The file 'TomTom Navifgator' cannot be opened. either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be foind. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
Now I wouldn't mind doing as it says, but I thought I'd try a soft reset first - but when the phone 'booted' back up, all of the other installed apps, also failed, with the same message.
Apps include gsen, HD Tweak, mini gps, among others.
These were all working fine previously.
Anyone have any ideas as I don't want to have to re-install all of them again?
Thanks.
sounds like a corruption has happened somewhere. check your SD card (if that's where you installed them) and look for suspicious characters, or missing files. When it happened to me on my old phone all the directories were suddenly empty!!
I did install them all on the sd card. Had a look and it doesn't appear to be corrupt.

Did you change any settings with HDtweak, have the same problem at this time, only programe I added was HD tweak 5.4.x. Good luck
Maybe the same problem
I've also had a problem like this once on my HD. I remember, I had just installed HDtweak when it appeared first time. I could not find any solution on how to fix it, so I did a Hard Reset...
Hope anyone can fix it.
My HD said that ".NET framework 3.5" is needed (it was installed), and I tried over and over again to reinstall it, but it just gave me another error. Do your device do this?
Had a similar problem, after using Storage Card and HD in USB mode. All of a sudden my Storage Card appeared in Windows and Resco Explorer twice, Storage Card and Storage Card2. Of course none of the programs would want to start, since the path was changed.
I copied all the programs from the storage card to the desktop (with the intention to reformat the card), reset the HD without the storage card, put the card back in - card #2 was gone - and copied all the files back to the card. Solved my problem.
Very odd. Bit the bullet and started re-installing the apps (not as painful as I thought actually) and they all installed, overwriting the existing version - except, similar to Lucas 0511, they seemed to now be on Storage Card2. And a 'normal' (on device) folder had been created, named Storage Card.
All works OK, but I really don't understand it!?!?

I encountered similar problem in the past.
Both My diamond and HD also have got similar problem.
Diamond: suddenly showed up 2 internal memory.
HD: 2 SD card.
One episode, my card was even corrupted.

I think your card was corrupted.
No, not corrupted, but during USB disk drive mode access to the card for other apps is blocked. So if an app on the device (in my case usually Opera) attempts to write to the card during USB disk mode it cannot find it - and hence will create and write into a new Storage Card folder.
After the USB disk drive mode is closed the folder name "Storage Card" is now taken, so the card will automatically be reassigned to "Storage Card2" - and apps installed to Storage Card previously will no longer find it.
Solution: Delete the "new" Storage Card folder, card out, reset, card back in - and all should be back to normal.
I've had this problem too. It'll manifest as all the icons for programs installed on your SD showing up as blanks. When you go into your file manager you'll see Storage Card and Storage Card2. Storage Card2 is your storage card, but because all your shortcuts are looking for stuff on Storage Card, it can't find the data.
One cause may be that for some reason your mail application starts writing attachments to a new, non-existent storage card. All you have to do is delete it. (Make sure you're deleting the right one - you can remove the other if you want to be belt-and-braces safe, but just checking in the file manager is probably good enough.)
I've had this problem a couple of times on my Kaiser. Unfortunately the only way to correct it was to do a hard reset as I couldn't find any solution anywhere. So far it hasn't happened on my HD.

if your device is showing 'storagecard' and 'storagecard2',
remove memory card, now the file explorer will still show 'storagecard',
delete the 'storagecard' and reinsert the memory card,
perform soft-reset.....
Hi,
Please forgive me if this is a noob question. I recently developed an issue transferring files to the sd card. Using the usb storage method, after transfering 2 or 3 mp3s, the phone would shut off and reboot for no reason (This caused the Zeam launcher to crash apparently? for at least 15 tries)
I tried using the SD adapter, the transfer rate is extremely slow or to no transfer at all and causes windows explorer to crash or hang (tried at least 15x).
I figured my sd card was corrupted so I tried formatting the card. If I used the SD adapter, it would say the card is write-protected even though clearly, the locked was off. I even tried another SD-adapter to no avail.
Finally, using USB storage, I was able to format the SD card.
Since I mentioned earlier that the Zeam launcher crashed, (yes, I selected always use "zeam launcher" even after it crashed causing the error message to loop) I resetted the phone with the wipe data/factory rest option in clockworkmod (I'm using ViperRom 3.03).
I wasn't sure if the 1 click root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388) installed any folders into the sd card so I ran the 1 click root in windows just to make sure. After rebooting from the 1 click root, all the files that were previously formatted were back.
I guess I didn't read too clearly but
my questions is
1) how am I able to disable that backup function? I had a bunch of files (which I have no idea what they did) from when i first started playing with the phone and I want to start off fresh with just the files I need.
2) anyone have any idea why the sd card was unable to accept files through the SD adapter or USB storage method?
3) what to do when the launcher crashes (this happened to me 2x already where I lost all my data)
Thanks to anyone who can help. This will help me close some gaps in my limited Android/Epic 4g knowledge.
definitely something is weird. Using usb storage, I ran the scandisk to fix errors and some errors were found. I formatted to ntfs just for kicks and the sd card read blank and in properties the drive had nothing in use. I turned off usb storage, turned it back on and voila, all the files that weren't there are now back. It this a sign of a corrupted sd card or am I going crazy?
Which files/folders are you referring to? Because as soon as your phone mounts your sd card, it will write about 4 folders (I think) if they are not already there...
.android_secure
Android
DCIM
LOST.DIR
if I recall correctly. The other thing you can do is use your phone to format your card instead of doing it on a computer... go to 'Settings->SD card and phone storage->Unmount SD card' then after it is unmounted, use the 'Format SD card' option. If this doesn't work, then you may need a new sd card/phone.
Has anyone experienced this - and even better have a solution?
running stock 2.29.405.2 for a few weeks now, but all of a sudden apps have dissapeared that are installed on the SD card.
also i cant move any apps (i know not all apps allow) to the SD card as a 'failed to move application' notice appears.
any ideas peeps?
SD card
I would do this.
1)Check your SD card. Can you access your sd card? Could be a corrupted card.
2)Take out your sd card and put it back in.
3)Power off phone and restart. Wait for a while, see if your apps come back.
Isn't 2.29.405.5 out now from OTA?
also I agree - make sure you can access the SD and reboot

Tried all of these - With a different SD card i can move the apps. Does that sound like a corrupt card, and if so is there anything i can do?

It seems to have been pulled (I waited until I had my goldcard available) and is not available now. Is there a link to do it manually?
I am going through the same thing. I determined I had a corrupt card. I will be getting a new card today and reinstalling all of my apps that were installed on the corrupt card.
Had the same issue. Noticed that the .android-secure folder on SD is read only. Changed to read/write in root explorer, rebooted and apps are back.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
no joy with that, but thanks anyway.
i might look at deleting that folder and starting again - it will give me an excuse to get rid of all the crap i have anyway.
But first i might try recovery - i know that you cannot see the content of the .android_secure for security reasons
I just recovered from the same problem (tried the tips here, but they didn't work in my case.) I thought I'd add the solution that eventually worked for me, just in case it's of any help to anyone else.
Remove SD card from phone and insert in a Windows PC
Run CHKDSK /F from the command prompt, just in case there are any file errors (there were none in my case.)
Rename the .android-secure folder to something else (it really doesn't matter what you call it.)
Eject the card and put it back in the phone, allow the phone to start up and initialise the SD card. It will create a new .android-secure folder. (I tried creating the folder on the PC, but that didn't work. The phone needs to create it for itself.)
Card back in the PC, and cut and paste the files from the folder that you previously renamed into the new .android-secure folder.
Card back in the phone, and if your problem was the same as mine, your apps are back.
You might also be able to do this with the card in situ via the USB cable. I haven't tried it.
Out of interest, this happened to me after nothing more serious than a dead battery. The phone was at 90%+ charge when I went to bed last night, but dead this morning. I can only assume that I left a power hungry app running by accident.
Thanks for the info. i had already resolved mine by renaming the folder to delete it. luckily i had most apps backed up so it didnt take long to go back in.
I have been trying to think what caused it, and you reminded me that my battery dies a couple of days ago, so was probably this that caused it also.
It seems that some apps that I try to install cannot be installed , and an error message stating that it cannot be installed on usb storage or SD card appears. These apps include farm tower, angry birds etc. I only got those errors recently.
Rcmixhd Rom.
I am having the same issue, I cannot move or install any of the apps to my SD card. Am using HTC desire with 2.2 Froyo.
Even unmounting and mounting the SD card didn't help. Now formatting my 16GB card, hoping it will solve the problem.
I just had this problem, and eventually found the solution in the Google technical help forum for Android Market (I can't post links here yet). The thread is titled "Installation Unsuccessful - Unknown reason -18".
The fix is to delete a rogue temporary file called smdl2tmp1.asec from the /sdcard/.android_secure directory. It's a hidden file, so if you can't see it using phone apps like Astro, plug the phone into a PC and use windows explorer to open the SD card. It should be visible for deletion then.
One of the reasons I got this phone after having a G2 for a year was to be able to use external storage. Well I am now on my second 128GB sd card, which the phone is supposed to be able to recognize, but it's all but useless. When I inserted each card the first time the phone recognized it and was able to mount it and I was able to write to it. But whenever I tried to copy files using a file manager (I use Total Commander with root access) it will tell me to "select the root of the SC card to gain access" or something similar. So I do that, but it still fails to be able to write to it. Sometimes it causes the SD card to unmount and not be readable by the phone at all except in recovery. I'm on stock 5.0.1 from T-Mobile. Is this an android issue or a phone issue? The first sd card is totally corrupt - I can't even mount it on my PC to format it. I want to find out what the problem is before corrupting this one. The second one I just tried getting permissions using my QuickPic app to copy files over, and I followed the instructions to gain write permission and it seemed to indicate it was successful. But nothing was copied. Then suddenly the SD card was no longer mounted and the OS doesn't see it. I rebooted in recovery and it sees it there. I tried formatting the last one in recovery and that's when it got so corrupted that it was not usable. Any help here?
This may or may not help, but I use either TWRP Manager or the "SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD" app to apply the SD card patch in LP (the SDFix app also works in LP).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix&hl=en
... so after I root the phone using the One-Click script, I use TWRP Manager to apply the SD card patch, then after the reboot use it to install TWRP.
