One of the reasons I got this phone after having a G2 for a year was to be able to use external storage. Well I am now on my second 128GB sd card, which the phone is supposed to be able to recognize, but it's all but useless. When I inserted each card the first time the phone recognized it and was able to mount it and I was able to write to it. But whenever I tried to copy files using a file manager (I use Total Commander with root access) it will tell me to "select the root of the SC card to gain access" or something similar. So I do that, but it still fails to be able to write to it. Sometimes it causes the SD card to unmount and not be readable by the phone at all except in recovery. I'm on stock 5.0.1 from T-Mobile. Is this an android issue or a phone issue? The first sd card is totally corrupt - I can't even mount it on my PC to format it. I want to find out what the problem is before corrupting this one. The second one I just tried getting permissions using my QuickPic app to copy files over, and I followed the instructions to gain write permission and it seemed to indicate it was successful. But nothing was copied. Then suddenly the SD card was no longer mounted and the OS doesn't see it. I rebooted in recovery and it sees it there. I tried formatting the last one in recovery and that's when it got so corrupted that it was not usable. Any help here?
This may or may not help, but I use either TWRP Manager or the "SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD" app to apply the SD card patch in LP (the SDFix app also works in LP).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix&hl=en
... so after I root the phone using the One-Click script, I use TWRP Manager to apply the SD card patch, then after the reboot use it to install TWRP.

Hi,
Please forgive me if this is a noob question. I recently developed an issue transferring files to the sd card. Using the usb storage method, after transfering 2 or 3 mp3s, the phone would shut off and reboot for no reason (This caused the Zeam launcher to crash apparently? for at least 15 tries)
I tried using the SD adapter, the transfer rate is extremely slow or to no transfer at all and causes windows explorer to crash or hang (tried at least 15x).
I figured my sd card was corrupted so I tried formatting the card. If I used the SD adapter, it would say the card is write-protected even though clearly, the locked was off. I even tried another SD-adapter to no avail.
Finally, using USB storage, I was able to format the SD card.
Since I mentioned earlier that the Zeam launcher crashed, (yes, I selected always use "zeam launcher" even after it crashed causing the error message to loop) I resetted the phone with the wipe data/factory rest option in clockworkmod (I'm using ViperRom 3.03).
I wasn't sure if the 1 click root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388) installed any folders into the sd card so I ran the 1 click root in windows just to make sure. After rebooting from the 1 click root, all the files that were previously formatted were back.
I guess I didn't read too clearly but
my questions is
1) how am I able to disable that backup function? I had a bunch of files (which I have no idea what they did) from when i first started playing with the phone and I want to start off fresh with just the files I need.
2) anyone have any idea why the sd card was unable to accept files through the SD adapter or USB storage method?
3) what to do when the launcher crashes (this happened to me 2x already where I lost all my data)
Thanks to anyone who can help. This will help me close some gaps in my limited Android/Epic 4g knowledge.
definitely something is weird. Using usb storage, I ran the scandisk to fix errors and some errors were found. I formatted to ntfs just for kicks and the sd card read blank and in properties the drive had nothing in use. I turned off usb storage, turned it back on and voila, all the files that weren't there are now back. It this a sign of a corrupted sd card or am I going crazy?
Which files/folders are you referring to? Because as soon as your phone mounts your sd card, it will write about 4 folders (I think) if they are not already there...

if I recall correctly. The other thing you can do is use your phone to format your card instead of doing it on a computer... go to 'Settings->SD card and phone storage->Unmount SD card' then after it is unmounted, use the 'Format SD card' option. If this doesn't work, then you may need a new sd card/phone.
so, was having problems with my sd card today, so I formatted it on my mac, as fat32, then put all my backup files on it, and my phone can see it, and I am able to move files and programs to it, just like normal.
Only problem is, when I boot to recovery, to try and flash a zip file of any sort, I get a "error, sd card not mounted" message, and can't scroll to the root of the card to see anything..
when I formatted the card on my mac, I didn't make a partition on anything; I just formatted, gave it a name, and the phone saw it and recognizes it, except when I reboot into recovery...
Any suggestions on how I can get it to recognize itself in recovery?
Thanks!
Presto link-o http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243.
that looks like a fix for sd cards that are not DETECTED; mine can be seen through root explorer, and I can add or delete anything I want from it through my phone; it just doesnt want to mount when I am in recovery..
I'm not sure the link you posted is for not mounting in recovery...
thanks!
Hi, I am new to XDA so I have to report a bug (if it is) here for Phoenix rom v16.
I flashed this rom according to original thread carefully. Everything works well so far but only the extSD card.
My phone is Galaxy note2 N7100
I flashed Phoenix rom from 4.1.3 (I wiped mannually several times using Philz 15)
I have a 64gb class 10 sdcard(fat32) inserted which worked fine under old systems
When I first get into the new Phoenix rom, I noticed in setting-storage, I can see a external card mounted, but the total space is not right (around 10gb). And I used ES file explorer, trying to check the content there, but I cannot see nor write anything. I went back to setting-storage and unmount SD card, and then mount again. The space became right. And I can access to the card using ES file explorer also. It looked good!
However, after I flash the update and reboot the system, the problem comes back. I can see the card under setting-storage but with wrong size, and I cannot read or write again. After I physically pull out the card and then put it back in, and mount it again, it works.
I tried to reboot the system again, and problem came back after rebooting.
I don't know why the system cannot recognize the external sd card correctly after reboot by itself, only after you remount the card, you can use it normally. This really bothers me and I don't know how to solve this problem.

Are you sure you didn't tick option/mod to use external sdcard as internal in aroma installer? This switches the cards and sometimes it states sdcard size incorrectly (depends what mod you're using). With some kernels this mod might not work and weird stuff can happen. If you didn't touch this option then I don't know what could it be.

OK, this could be the reason, I didn't notice this option during installation. I noticed in the orginal thread of the 4.3 phoenix rom that the internal card would be external and external would be internal. I didn't know that I have to choose this. I will look into it again.
By the way, if this happened, that means I will have a note2 with 64gb internal space? That is awesome!
I have an LG Optimus Pro E980 with 4.4.2, rooted with towel root.
In an attempt to install TWRP recovery today I lost access to my external sd card. Not sure what I did but earlier today I could view, copy files or delete files to my sd card from my phone or from my computer when hooked with usb and media transfer.
I had a lot of trial and error trying to get a custom recovery installed on my phone and in the process I noticed my sd card quit working.
I have rebooted, removed it, reformatted (from my computer) and still nothing changes. ES File Manager sees it (I think) but when I try to create a folder on the external sd it just says it can't. It works when I put it in another android phone so I don't think the sd card is the problem. I also tried the app on google sdfix that makes kitkat have the settings to write to the sd card. Still didn't fix my problem. It will mount or erase from the settings menu. I don't see a format or unmount option at all.
I would like to flash a new copy of 4.4.2 to my phone but I can't find instructions of how to do this that I understand . I figure this will fix my problem and I was wanting to do a wipe and clean install anyway.
Can someone please advise me? TY
Certain twrp can't access the SD disk. I know this because I have installed twrp 2.8 and I notice immediately that it can't access the external SD disk, as normally be in the directory/storage/sddisk1. Don*t ask me which twrp to use because I don't know. I've heard that some twrp can access the external SD disk and some can't without some modification. Try this one

Its been modified, so it should work without any problem. BTW, as I have said on your other topic, why are you trying to reinstall the stock KitKat that you already have? If you have issues, a factory reset, as you've already figure out, should take care of thing, unless you've erase system files. Don't take the process of flashing tot files lightly, because if one of many things go wrong, you may wish you have never know how to flash the tot file.

I just responded to your other post.
I remember this happened in the past, and I didn't give it too much thought, just did a clean ROM install and problem got away.
I may be doing this again, but thought I'd ask first, in case I can avoid it.
LG G3 - D850
ROM: Fulmics 8.0
Kernel Xceed D850-MM-test-bld7n
rooted (Magisk)
internal memory: 0.88GB free
external memory: Sandisk 64GB exfat, 23.54 GB free
Recently I got the classic Android message about running out of space in my internal storage, so I went ahead and opened Root Explorer, navigated to a folder in the internal memory, chose stuff to move, and moved it to the external storage.
There were no errors, and some stuff moved, but at some point it stopped on its own.
So I tried again, and it wouldn't move anymore.
I restarted the phone and this is where it's currently at:
-First time I open Root Explorer after rebooting, I can see the contents of the external SD card
-As soon as I try to do any kind of writing to it, it tells me I need to give permissions in Android so the app can write to the external storage. If I touch OK, it briefly flashes the permissions window, then goes back to root explorer and I can't see the SD card contents anymore (it still shows it as a folder within /storage, and if I enter it, it's empty, but does show the correct used/free space)
-I tried Titanium backup, and it also can't write to the external storage.
I did some research, tried the SD Fix app from the store, tried a couple more apps to fix external storage permissions , tried flashing the same kernel again and rooting again, issue persists.
I don't know what could be the root cause and/or how to further investigate/troubleshoot.
Any and all ideas are welcome.
Thanks!
Additional information:
-If I go to Settings > General > Storage, I see both internal and SD card. The SD card shows its usage information, and I have the eject button. However if I touch on it, a screen flashes for a second then goes back to the Storage screen (can't remember what it's supposed to do, but I'd assume it should show me the files in the SD card).
-If I boot in recovery (TWRP), I can't mount the SD card (it won't add a check mark to it).
