[Q] Class 10 MicroSD Issues - Defy General

Hello, I bought some day ago a Team 16GB class 10 Micro SD card, but my Defy freeze, expecially when I browse it with quickpic.
I see some thread about class 10 cards and someone found that a partial fix is format with 32k or 64k as file allocation unit size, and maybe another fix is set higher voltage with setsvel.
I've tried the format fix, but I gain only speed, now I'll try the second to gain the needed stability.
I read also that it's an Android kernel related issue, so we still need an official fix.
Someone know some other method?
D_L
Edit: Also the voltage tweak have failed... It's frustrating...

There maybe something related to the manufacturer. For example in my country the cheepest MicroSDHC Cards are made by Adata and Serioux (there maybe other chinesse brands but these are present at known big IT stores).
So people bought them, especially Adata ( which should be better than Serioux).
Class 6/10... and they ended up not working.
So my advice is to try with a Knigston/Kingmax/Transcend/ Sandisk( not that cheap) same 16gb and same class, see if you see a difference.
And i think Class 6 is enough... if let's say Class 10 from the manufacturers above it too expensive.
Maybe it helps.

Transcend?? um.. i don't think so, it's just the same.
perviously i had Transced 8 GB class 6,
using my old galaxy android, it's so fine and speed is good.
but after went to Defy, it was horrible.
often to cause hangs!
have to unmount / remount, which often not succeed, and have to pull out battery.
and it's especially happen when taking picture with camera or downloading + listening to mp3.
many good moments missed, can't take picture, because have to pull out the battery,
and that's embarassing, in front of my friend.
they think i have a smartphone but often hangs,
and now i know it is just because highclass sdcard.
i am using class 2 sdcard now, never get hangs.
end of problem.

I had the same problem.
I bought a 16GB class 10 SDHC ab. a month ago and when I'd been using my Defy always been freezed when I opened the Gallery or any else card related application.
I deleted the partition on the card and created a new one without LBA mode and the problem had been solved temporary. After a week it was start to make freezes again.
Actually I'm using a 16GB class 2 one (I bought it for 15 pounds as used). There's no problems any more, and it works as the same speed as the class 10 one (by the SD Tools).

I gave up and went back to a class 6 8GB Samsung, i did start a thread on the official Motorola forum if you want to go let them know about the problems, it might get them to issue a fix if more people start to complain about it. https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/53050?tstart=30

i tot only me..
same here..
wanna sell my DNA 16GB class 10.
phone hang quite easily after change to this

So i want to buy a 8 gb card class 4 or 6 tomorrow... and it must work would CM7 . What to get ? I understand that using Sd booster or CM7 default i should get the same speed acordingly to what i set ?

Hi Deonix.
My SD is a SanDisk 8GB class 4 and working well.
A couple days a go i try to use my other SD 16GB (class 10) and had issues, so i back to the 8GB class 4.
Some users have 16 and 32GB class 2 and 4 and they have no problems.

Thanks... i will choose a class 4 probably Kingmax. Anyone with working Class 6 8gb? what manufacturer?
Question: i will have on my 8 gb card a bunch of apps-30-40... some games including Asphalt 6 < for example>, MotoNav, and music. Out of this i think i will still have 2-3 Gb free . I don't need to transfer data from Card to PC frequently (fast i mean) maybe when it happens i will use the phone as a mass storage.
The question is: Do i need a class 6? I only need to work properly while in the phone and have a decent speed as a Mass storage from time to time.

definetely is not cm7 problem,
i thought it was.. and many people thought it too.
maybe it's froyo kernel seems little bit buggy with hiclass sdcard.
and cm7 using froyo kernel though.
using class 2 sdcard is perfect.
the speed is just the same though.
have been checked with some bencharking tools.

Both me and the missus are using class 6 samsung cards this one to be precise http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Micro-Speed-memory-Class/dp/B002WGIV10/ref=pd_rhf_shvl_44 and it works greatSD tools shows a write speed of around 10MB/s and a read speed of around 21MB/s

actually, i'll buy SD Card Team 16 Gig class 10..
any problem with froyo for class 10 ?
need more advice from u guys

many people confirm there's a problem with that,
even with 6 class sdcard.
i don't know what's going on but it's happening and annoying,
it happens on froyo, and CM7 too (FYI, CM7 Quarx uses froyo kernel).

Thats what we are all saying, class 10 cards seem nothing but a problem regardless of size. This is why i went back to the class 6 samsung and posted a link to it cos i know it works.

Just bought a 8 gb Kingston class 4. Will report speed and any other issues as soon as i install CM7 with it.
Hope it works well. It's an Android Kernel issue from Froyo on the Class 6/10 crashes as i can understand.. nobody's fault ( here on XDA i mean). Still some work.
Also i remain strong on my position.
Choose your manufacturer wisely even if it costs 10-20$/i dunno how much more.

I use kingmax 16gb class10 allways hang,
so bad,
use class 4 or 2 batter

i nearly bought a 16GB Lexmark class 6 card today but i dare not in case it didnt work, this is a crap situation.

Same here - Froyo 2.2.2 and Transend 16GB Class10 - freezes at random basis and random applications. No issues with 8GB Class 4.

I have similar problem, how do I know the class of the card? It is I believe a Kingston, I've had it for ages.
Also if it is relevant to someone, I have a Defy from CEE distribution, with Froyo.

You can check if the class is printed on the card. Usually it is a number inside a letter "C" (like a full circle).
You can see the images here:

Do i NEED a Class 6 Micro SDHC Card

Hello all,
Ive got a spare 16GB Micro SDHC card which i have swapped for the stock 2GB version that came with the Desire, but it is only a Class 2.
Having read that its best to use Class 6, should i shell out £50 for a new one, or will i not notice a difference in class ?
Dunno - I'm using a class 2 16gb card myself and I don't notice much slowdown if at all. I'm surprised these things haven't come down in price after two years... key thing is do you notice any slowdown with apps that access the SD card? like I say, I haven't thus far...

i read somwhere that class 4 is enough coz the phones do not support hihger speeds. class 6 will help you if you will take card to the card reader straight to the computer... it think

Thats what i ......... think. Im sure it only matters if its connected to the PC, and in that case i dont care.
I read it on another forum that i wont link too
Class 6 are almost double the price of Class 2.
You don't NEED to get one, I did use a Class 2 card for a few days and didn't have any problems.
Personally I am using a Class 6 now, as I regularly transfer a lot of big media files onto the card, so the extra speed is worth it for me.
If you don't fancy forking out though, you don't have to.
I totally agree, My desire came with a 4gb sandisk class memory card which I initially assumed was class 4 until I took the card out yesterday...connecting the desire to my pc and switching to usb drive mode, i am able to transfer my movies etc to the memory at +/- 8Meg per sec which is more than adequate enough for me...I was about to get a 16gb one but was thinking of getting the class 6 one until i discovered the one I currently have is class 2, so I just made up my mind and went for a class 2 16gb, saved me money....
They only refer to the write speed of the card, i came from a 8gb class 6 and now have a 16gb class 2 and notice no difference, only difference is the write speed from pc to card.
Even though i got a class 2 i still see 4-6mb/s so happy enough with that.
I have a class 10 16Gb card in phone. Read and write speeds seem to be limited to around 8Mb per second (copying uncompressed music). Using an adapter, the computer is able to copy at 14Mb+ using the same card.
They just seem a big outlay for nothing to me, lets face it the only big write time is when you transfer everything across from your previous card once the stuff is on there the write times really won't be much of a problem.
The main reason you will find people suggesting class 6 and above SD cards is due to "Apps to SD". For the Newbies "Apps to SD" or A2SD is a modification that has been done on most android phones (though not the desire at time of writing) which allows the Apps you download to be stored on the SD card rather than the phones limited internal memory. I am not sure if it makes a huge difference to the faster processor phones, but in the G1 days it was noticeable. For just moving music and pictures about it isn't really important to have a faster card and we may have to wait a while for A2SD anyway. I will pop over to the N1 forum and see if they can shed some light on this.
Anyone using a microSD 16GB Class 4, if so are they any good? I'm looking at buying one for the Desire. Also where's the best place to get a deal on one of these card?

What MicroSD Classes Work with the Desire...?

My question was concerning my 16gb Class 6 card (which actually appeared to be corrupt/broke'd anyway)
I asked about compatibly with the Desire...

In regards to SD Cards
I can help you with that.
The card that you are trying to use is not compatible with the phone as the class is too high speed for the device to be able to keep up with the speed. I have included a link to a webpage with the sd cards that are compatible with that device.
http://www.expansys.com/a.aspx?i=196001
If you look under the accessory tab then down the bottom is compatible memory.
I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required.

I'm sure I read some threads about class 10's working fine in the Desire?
The link seems to suggest only a class 2 or a class 4 will work...
I'm using a class 4 without problems so far.
On a dutch board I read a guy was using a class 6 on Starbust so it should be possible I think.
I've just bought a 16gb class 4 Sandisk and the speed tests show it as being quite a bit faster than my class 4 (non Sandisk) 8gb card!
I'm using class 4, working fine
I'm using a 8GB class 6 card with Custom ROM and A2SD with no problem. Been over 6 months now.
A lot of class 10 cards have issues, class 6 seems to be the most reliable thus far. Some people have had good experiences with A-DATA 16gb class 10.
So from user experience - a good Class 6/10 card should work just fine?

For C6 yes.
For C10 Mostly yes... but usually class 10 is not really faster... so save the money.
Just my two cents.
I'm using Transcend 8GB class 6 without any problem. Try to format by gparted or similiar. Are you using it for any other purpose than storing photos, music or etc? For example for data2sd or apps2sd?
I just bought a transcend 16gb class 6, working perfectly so far with no problems.

I bought a 16gb class 6 to use with data2sd but struggled as the card was broken - so i've sent it back and just have the 8gb class 2 that i got with my phone now - and on stock rom again, so it is just photos and music and froyo app2sd at the moment
basically all branded cards will work fine, the thing you shoud be concerned more onthe capacity you are gonna use. It aint worth buying a 16GB sd when u cant fill even half of it with useful stuff
If speed is your thing then get a class 4 or 6 but I had SD mounted as read only with a class 4 8 gig Kingston SD, so I swooped with a buddy of mine for a class 2 SD from a Nokia n95, no problems since then.

[Q] can htc desire support class 10

currently running a class 2, and i do notice alot of lag when copy and saving stuff so wanna upgrade, thinking of getting this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingmax-mic...1AIC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1299847078&sr=8-3
yea yea, i know if t "kingmax" so it will either be crap or amazing (more likely crap)
but my question is, is it worth getting a class 10, would the htc support it, and would it be able to make use of it?
thanks in advance
I have a "generic" 32GB class 10 OEM by a local company here in Malaysia, and I must say it is noticeably quicker than my previous class 4 16GB card when used in the phone (a2sd). Transferring files using the laptop on the other hand is wayyyy faster...
Whether its worth the money over a class 6 equivalent i can't say.
Regarding "Kingmax", I have a usb flash disk of theirs and its blazing fast Lets hope they are consistent.
I use a decent Samsung 8Gb class six and I get a 10-11Mbps transfer rate, which is more than enough for me. I got the card for something like £12. My old class four used to peak at about ~6Mbs if I remember rightly.
I have a class 10 kingmax and it's working great,i'm running data2sd on it and no issues at all. But i recall i heard some ppl had some lag issues with class 10 cards (not kingmax in particular). As for kingmax specifically it's guaranteed u'll get 10 Mb/s write speed.

Mine is a kingstone 16GB class 10 and it rocks !
I have a Kingmax 16GB Class 10 and I get above 10MB/s for both writing and reading when testing using SD Card Speed Test. However, the rom and kernel on your HTC does make a difference, I think, on whether your Desire can fully utilise the Class 10. I don't think it would be worth it to use a Class 10 over a Class 6 if you're using a stock rom, but if you're using a rom with data2ext or data2sd, that uses the SD card extensively, then it'd probably make a difference.

SD Cards Which Do & Dont Work With The Defy

Lets post what cards we do know work and the ones that don't because this is starting to cost people money just trying to find out. It is becoming apparent the faster the class the less likely the card will work. All class 2 and 4 cards seems to work, the majority of class 6 cards work but class 10 cards that work are few and far between.
The problems seem to be with the official moto release of 2.2, many had no problems with 2.1 so the issues are with the software not the hardware.

how do I do that ? btw. I already thought my defy was broken as it froze every 5-10 minutes, than changed to the kingston card and installed the exact same apps/ settings and now it runs without errors for a week already...
Do it in Windows mate To be honest though a working card should do just that, work, if you are having ot mess around with cluster sizes to get it working rather than just doing it to improve speed then i would be weary.
You should edit your 1st post ..make a list of working and non working SD cards!
Just for you then LOL.
Aint that the point of this thread?
Simple and clean info about SD cards.. Its not for me its for community FFS!
Take CM7 thread for a example ,its pretty much mess(1k posts?) there but hey you have another thread which is simple FAQ where it clearly says what you should do to install that rom.
Its similar as this and bunch other threads out there;more organisation would be better for all.

If card reader of desire is slow, on level of Class 6, if you put Class 10, doesnt change anything, but why "is not so good"?
I can safely say that my 32 GB class 6 has no issues. I've been reading on the subject and for some devices the class 10 is flaky... might just be a firware/software issue. Who knows.
But I'm ok with my class 6. Write: 9mb/s and read 24.3m/s
Ok so after everything last night I ended up keeping the kingston class 4 instead of the wintec class 10.
One thing that everyone should know if they are planning to upgrade soon and have forgotten this. The speed to write to a micro sd is slow then the speed to copy from a micro sd. This is my experience last night at least... I can copy a certain file to my desktop in 40 seconds but to put it on took 2-3 minutes.
Anyways, just be patient and go to a place you can get refunds so you dont get screwed with a bad card lol. With my experience the 32 gb class 10 wintec sucks, the write speed was insanely slow. So I stuck with a name brand instead, I really wanted a sandisk but they werent available.

Thank You: I can confirm this.
I had to put a SD in my old DesireZ/Vision for one of my son (10 years... there's no religion....) to replace a old 4GB crashed one.
The phone is running SenseI ROM (fine ROM: a very good way to replace the stable CM7 and run ICS 4.0)
I bought on Amazon Samsung EVO uSD 16GB Class10... and it was not recognized... So I read it on the PC to see if is was good or not: it was OK!
Recovered the trouble upgrading the Galaxy S2 of the other son from a old 8GB class 4 (probably Kingston o Transcend) to the brand new 16GB EVO Class 10, and putting the old 8GBB in the Desire Z: quickly recognized and optimally mounted both cards over both the 2 phones!
But I was disappointed... more than speed performance I thought that Class 10 memory card were also better on quality, due to a more robust and stable architecture of the chips inside.... and
much more recommended for the "systemdisk-like" use on Android Smartphones!
