2g makes no diff, ill have to wait for a phone to use and call them, and then most likely get a new phone, then unroot mine yaya and so on lol.

If you are both T-Mob, then of course you are the same network. They don't build a new set of cell towers just for pre-paid. They just change the way they bill you.

called tmobile and it turned out to be my sim card was a older version and had switched networks too many times and couldnt connect anymore. took the one that came with the phone and got it setup and its all good again.

Well, if the memory on the SIM card is akin to flash memory, I guess it's possible.

Really? Totally believe you just dont see the logic behind it. Why would they make a sim card only be able to switch networks so many times? Makes no sense. The person you talked to probably just had no idea what they were talking about!
Pretty much every rewritabe non volatile memory technology out there has a limiter number of writes that can be performed on it before it fails. Maybe a SIM card will last for > 10 years. I don't know, I haven't been with a single provider long enough to find out. I can see where this was a logical hypothesis on the part of the rep, and since replacing the sim worked, where is the problem?

The service in my phone has been going off & on lately like my bars would be all gone. so ive tried pretty much everything to do to fix it & now I just dont have service now. Is this because of the ATT & T-mobile merger? I live in Roswell GA if that helps.

1) no its not the merger
2) What rom/radio? Have you tried another? ("Tried everything" doesn't help us diagnose)
3) Did you simply call T-mobile and ask about a service outage in your area? Those do happen.

I've been having that same issue on and off in The Bay area. Happens more often in San Francisco than East Bay. Sometimes I'll have to reboot my phone to get service again. Or the bars will turn white and sit there.

Is there any reason to put the new SIM card that came with my phone in? I put in the same one that I've been using for years (Dash->G1->G2->SGS2) and it works fine. 4G shows at the top of the screen. I haven't tried a speed test yet, but I'd bet I get 4G speeds the same way I did on my G2.
So, what good reason is there?
Right now, there is no reason. When the wifi calling becomes available it will require the new Sim.

Where did you guys find the new sim card? Is it in the plastic wrapper with the manual/user guide? I don't see it in the box and I haven't opened up the plastic wrapping the manual/user guide is wrapped in. Fyi I did buy my phone from a T-Mobile.

I replaced my five yr old sim card with it because my old one seemingly caused some bad 3g data issues. I found this out by swapping sim cards with a friend who just signed with T-Mobile and an SGS2. I replaced my old one with the one that came with the SGS2 and now I'm not only seeing improved 3g speeds but also better call reception.

Quick question, my sim is about 3 months old. Will it work with wifi calling when it is released or is the SIM in the box even more "updated" than a 3 month old sim?

They aren't. They are tied to IMEI's. Two things you really need it for; 1. If you want to use WiFi calling after the maintenance update in a couple weeks, you will absolutely have to have this SIM card. No questions. It will not work. 2. After time, the older SIM cards will fail. This could lead to data access, call drop, sms sending/receiving and signal issues. If you have one now to activate, saves you a call and a trip to the local store for a replacement.

Actually the new Sim is a completely new revision designed for the high speed 4g network. It also has the gold contacts in a different design which is part of it look at old and new Sims if you don't believe me. I forgot the name of the new Sim but its what was taught and explained for tmobile techs (tier 2 and up support). Also most stores do not have this Sim revision in yet so use the one supplied in your box. 90% of most tmobile employees have no idea about the new Sim and only guess when asked.

So I tried to activate a used Note 2 I just bought from someone on Canada's Telus network. According to the CSR the phone is not unlocked. Is there something I can do on the phone to check this?
I tried the "*#simlock#" or "*#simlock#*" or "*#simlock" and all of them just say "Not registered on network."
I did a IMEI lookup and it says my phone is not "blocked" (stolen?) but I can't find anything on how to check if it's locked or not.
Go in the boot loader and choose the sim lock option

If I press and hold those 2 keys it just continually reboots. If I press and hold them until something comes on the screen and then let go it just goes into Android.
If I add the Home button to the mix, I end up at the "Downloading..." screen at which point I need to pull the battery to reboot it.
I am a complete noob to Android, by the way, if that wasn't clear.
Haha alright... do you have an other carrier sim card?
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
No. The only SIM card that will fit (microSIM) is the Telus one I just bought. I have a work phone on Bell but it's not a microSIM and I'm not going to cut it or I won't be able to put it back in my work phone.
I should clarify that the Note 2 was being used on Bell and I am trying to use it Telus but they said it wasn't unlocked and they couldn't put it on their network.
I also read that I should get a warning error if I put a different SIM in and it is not unlocked but I started it up with my Telus SIM and got no errors.
I'm starting to wonder if they just had a typo in the IMEI or something but if I can find something on the device to prove it's unlocked then I'll know for sure.

Looks promising. I don't get a network lock dialog like they show, though. That's why I don't think it's locked. The reason I'm not getting anything from the network is probably because they didn't activate the new SIM because they were having some kind of issue with the IMEI. It'd be nice if they filled in the customer a little more about what the issue is.

gf reported her phone lost because it was cracked, samsung sent her a new one so now i want her old one. I put in my sim card but it says "Not register to network" im thinking maybe t-mobile blocked the phone somehow since it was reported lost but I figured there was a work around. Yup, T-Mobile blocked it.. There's no legal way around it, maybe your gf calling T-Mobile to unblock it, but they'll probably charge her full price for the one they sent her.. You could try using a different carrier, but it could end up being blocked again.. You could also sell it to someone in another country, blacklist won't go past the US

There are services that will fix this for you. I payed 35$ for my blocked tmobile s4 to be repaired.
I did this with an HTC EVO 3D. It was locked for 2 years so I flashed the phone to a different carrier and it worked. You might have problems with different features but it is posibble to still use the phone. Find a cellular store that will flash it. They normally charge around 50 dollars, give or take.
