Its an issue with Samsung. They need to update the SBL before it'll work.

Someone on another site said you had to have installed the binary .deb package the "backend" and then it satisfies the dependency and thennn you install the frontend. If that makes sense to you.

That doesn't work I've tried. I actually contacted the developer of heimdall and he said that it has something to do with the bootloaders. Also I believe chris4g also said the same thing.

I never tried that. I've tried virtual machine to run windows 7 and it wouldn't recognized my phone in download mode. I was told I would have to use bootcamp to run windows OS but I have an imac and it came with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Would I have to use bootcamp to run Linux?

I've tried to run Linux, and it hasn't worked for me. I was probably just doing something wrong. And I think bootcamp is Windows-only.

any new developments on getting this to work? i was about to start my own thread on this in Q&A.. ive been doing a lot of research to get heimdall working with my mac on 10.6.8
have the latest heimdall with a GUI i believe 1.1.1, does not recognize the phone in DL mode..
did find this guide started by the heimdall dev.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878686
specifically this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9918224&postcount=2 relating to the bootloader being basically crappy on galaxy S phones, and you need to update it in order to get a mac to properly recognize the device. of course this post is not epic specific, so im not sure if this applies for us
my understanding is that its boot.bin that is the bootloader in a TAR file...i dont think theres an epic user on XDA that hasnt odined at least the EC05 update. the post talks about how you need to get the "froyo bootloader", sounds like we already have that if we have odined EC05
the OP on the heimdall guide above has new versions? wondering if anyone has tried these command line versions? there is also somestuff in there that says the usb not recognizing issue is fixed in these newer versions.
i would love to get this working.. my only PC is from 2005, and the last time i tried to odin a modem it blue screened immediately after hitting start, i really dont trust the thing to be honest.. reinstalling windows does not seem to help..

Rooting keeps failing. Any alternate method?

I tried to find the answer of my question at many places but didn't have any success. I tried to root Droid incredible using unrevoked3 on 3 different computers ( all running Windows 7) but no success. On two pcs running amd processors, it don't go past pushing recovery image but the one Intel based, I got until phone reboots for first time and it just say rooting failed. When I unlock the mobile screen there is a notification saying unrevoked service stopped unexpectedly.
I have tried adb method to rebootin recovery but can't get phone in adb mod.
I am not new to rooting or programming but I am really stuck here. Phone is running froyo and have a bad esn. It is not also connected to any kind of cellular network. I did hard reset of phone many times but nothing has changed

My only suggestion is to root using a Mac computer. No need for installing drivers and such, just run Unrevoked. I have zero experience rooting via Windows.

I'm pretty sure you can use unrevoked through Linux (preferably Ubuntu) in a virtualbox. Saves the trouble of actually partitioning your hard drive and everything for something you're only going to use for twenty minutes.
One thing that works for me when I am jailbreaking iphones is to open Task Manager and set UnRevoked exe to use CPU 0 and make the priority Real Time.
Also exit any programs that monitor for new drives to pull media from. DropBox, Picasa, crap that came with your scanner/printer.

[Q] Has anybody tried Odin on Mac, i just downloaded it.

I just got a Odin 1.85 for Mac, but i cant see anybody talking about it. I want to use Odin instead of heimdall. I about to try it. Let me know if somebody has.
how did you install it?
isn't it an .exe file???
I thought Mac's/linux used something else like heidmal? Isn't there a thread in dev for them?
There is one that was made with some windows wrapping technique. I have it and its the latest 1.85 I installed and looks just like the windows one but scared of using it until I know of somebody who has done it. You can search it on google, I'm on my phone i can't post the link now
I downloaded it, installed fine, but in download mode it does not detect my phone. I will play more and see if I can get it to work.

Ive seen that tutorial, but dont want to use Heimdall, Im on Lion and lots of people are having problems. Ill just keep using my windows pc, but i would rather use Odin on Mac.
I second that. I need to try using Odin via VMware Fusion just to see if it works that way. I really don't like having to get back on my windohs pc unless I have too. Hoping someone will get the bugs worked out of this version.
that's a good idea, I was thinking Parallels for mac. I tried using Virtualbox but its too limited ,it won't even see a thumb stick. Let me know if it works with VM.
I thought you had to use Heimdall on a Mac. I am no expert on the subject though

Anyone get Odin to run in VMWARE FUSION
Has anyone been able to use ODIN in Fusion. I'm trying to root and install clockworkmod on epic but Fusion does not see my phone in Download mode. If this doesn't work what are the options on a mac to root epic on gingerbread?
Only way I can use Odin on my Mac was to install Windows using Bootcamp. It now recognizes both my Razr and my gTablet.
You'll have to boot into Windows rather than using a virtual Windows session.

[Q] EC05 modem using CWM?

Trying to update my Epic's modem to EI22, but currently my baseband version is EG22. Unfortunately, I can't get the device back onto EC05...I'm on a Mac, so no Odin, and Heimdall stubbornly refuses to recognize my device. Any way I can flash the EC05 modem using Clockworkmod? Thanks for the help.

Nope. It has to be Odin or Heimdall to access the modem of a CDMA phone. Only modem deltas are flashable. Sorry.

Did you try a different cable like a Blackberry or HTC cable? Did you try different ports? If it is a desktop try the USB ports in the back. You ran the Heimdall setup program and it couldn't find the phone?
I tried the OEM cable, a webOS cable, and a generic monoprice cable. It's a laptop. Tried all ports.

1st opt. -Maybe re-installing the Epic 4G drivers could help you out (at least for ODIN), meanwhile you do that, take your batt. out for a couple of minutes...
2nd -Visit a neighbor or family w/ your phone on hand (& a usb to install the drivers/programs there) to start the process again. (-BEWARE!, NOT EVERYONE HAS A "MAC" & FOR WINDOWS COMES 2 DIFFERENT OP.SIST. 32BIT & 64BIT!, BE SURE TO KNOW WHICH ONE TO INSTALL FIRST!)
3rd -Are you paying monthly for the warranty? (I think you know where I'm going, LOL!).
Sorry about Heimdall but I've never use it so, can't help you there. I really hope that my little knowledge can help you here, =!

I appreciate the reply. There ain't no warranty on this thing. Bought it on eBay and flashed it to Boost. I'm usually a Windows guy, but my work provided me with a decent Mac, so I handed my Windows machine off to my daughter.

I remember seeing some command lines for Heimdall on a Mac somewhere. This is in a different phones forum but may help with it:

I think you need Ubuntu to get it working properly.

[Q] Rooting with Heimdall

I've got my shiny new AT&T Captivate Glide (imported to the UK), which I want to root. Having looked at the instructions for rooting with Odin3, I dug out an ancient Windows XP SP2 CD and installed it in a VirtualBox VM, having not actually used Windows since about 2001. Unfortunately that's where I got in trouble - all the rooting guides say to install the Samsung drivers, which I do but Windows still says there's no driver for the phone. Grepping all the .inf files that the USB driver installed shows that none of them actually contain the phone's USB product ID (685e), so I'm a bit confused how this is supposed to work.
So having failed at getting anything to work under Windows, I thought about trying Heimdall under Linux. Some Googling reveals a few posts saying that it won't work at all with the Captivate Glide (or any Tegra 2 based devices), but since "heimdall detect" recognises the device when it is booted into download mode, I'm wondering if this is no longer true - can anyone confirm whether or not Heimdall now works with the Captivate Glide?
Secondly, all the rooting instructions I've come across tell me to download the firmware (AT&T / Rogers) that is appropriate for the device, but I've noticed that a few people on the forums say they are using the Rogers firmware with AT&T devices. Am I correct in assuming that I can actually flash it with either firmware without any issues?
And my final question Most of the specs for the phone I have found on the internet says it supports NFC, whilst most of the discussions I've seen says it doesn't. Sure enough, the AT&T software doesn't appear to support NFC, but can anyone confirm whether or not the hardware does?
Any pointers would be appreciated before I go ahead and flash the phone. Thanks.
I've put both rogers and AT&T roms on my AT&T phone...
Also, I believe that you are supposed to download Kies to windows, as it does the drivers for you. Just make sure before you try odin, that you kill all kies processes in the task manager (in windows).

Well, I tried Kies and it refused to install with an unreadable error message (the only readable bit was "SP3" which makes me think it needs Service Pack 3... which is a pain since Windows Genuine Disadvantage is telling me my genuine Windows CD isn't genuine and therefore won't let me install SP3. My first Windows experience in over 10 years isn't exactly going well).

STOP.
Odin does NOT like VirtualBox; you could brick your phone and you WILL corrupt your VM.
Unfortunately Heimdall doesn't work with the Glide. It sees the phone but when it tries to do any write operation it errors out. (I think the protocol is different somehow.) You'll have to find a native(!!) XP/Vista/7 system (I used my Win7 x64 gaming machine, it worked flawlessly) to get the party started. Failing that, a BartPE bootdisk *should* work but nobody's ever tried it. Once you have the ICS bootloader installed and have CWM, you won't need Odin again.
The phone doesn't have NFC -- someone (Dr.Mario I think) actually tore a Glide apart and looked at the board; there's no such chip.

I don't know about 8, but the Win7 piracy interlocks are even worse. And frankly, this is bad advice.. nobody's tested Odin on Win8. If you don't have the expertise to recover from a bad flash, you could be digging your phone a shallow grave.
Wow... Xp and 7 wga & activation are SO easy to get around...
I can confirm Odin and keis crash in vmware VM's with either windoze or Ubuntu as host.

Odin for Mac OSX?

Hi.
I'm reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539
which is very useful, trying to flash a stock ROM using Odin. My GT-N7100 is bricked, possibly with SDS. I'm on Mac OSX 10.8.4 and as far as i have read i need to download Odin 3.0.7 to my Mac (do they have a .dmg of this?). Samsung USB drivers to my Mac and the stock firmware from Sammobile.
The problem it is that everything is made for Windows. I'm seeing Samsung drivers in only Windows enviroment.
How can i flash using Odin on Mac OS X. Any links?
Thanks.
Another pal with SDS.
Hello there, Unfortunately I'm in the same boat as you. I'm on a Mac primarily but do have a windows desktop I can turn to when I come across windows only solutions as we have here. You can install a windows os using bootcamp or virtually through something like virtualbox on the Mac. For me though the windows route isn't getting anywhere. I don't think you have a full SDS situation where your phone is a complete brick like mine though. From your posts it sounds like you can at least get into download mode correct? If so you should be able to download the original 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 firmware for the Note II and flash via Odin. I wish I could at least try this step but as it is my phone is completely dead and won't boot at all. I'm trying to figure out how to submit a support request in the US right now which is proving very unsuccessful so far since we have the Galaxy Note International version (GT-N7100) which Samsung USA does not support in any way. I'm taking my phone to a local cell phone/tablet repair shop tomorrow to see if they can get anything accomplished. Good luck in your quest!
I have done more reading and have downloaded Heimdal 1.4- as well some random country GT-N7100 stock sammobile build .tar file (June- 4.1.2)
Please i need some incredibly generous person that might have an idea how i can flash a custom rom using Hemdal 1.4. My phone doesn't boot. I only have access to the "download mode". (No- recovery mode). I'm almost sure i have SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) and i'm using OSX and my only choice is to try to flash the Note II with Heimdral.
Check if this helps

You don't use heimdall to flash cyanogenmod. You use it to flash the recovery, then you root from the recovery and then you flash cyanogenmod from the recovery.
