[Q] EC05 modem using CWM? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to update my Epic's modem to EI22, but currently my baseband version is EG22. Unfortunately, I can't get the device back onto EC05...I'm on a Mac, so no Odin, and Heimdall stubbornly refuses to recognize my device. Any way I can flash the EC05 modem using Clockworkmod? Thanks for the help.

Nope. It has to be Odin or Heimdall to access the modem of a CDMA phone. Only modem deltas are flashable. Sorry.

Did you try a different cable like a Blackberry or HTC cable? Did you try different ports? If it is a desktop try the USB ports in the back. You ran the Heimdall setup program and it couldn't find the phone?

I tried the OEM cable, a webOS cable, and a generic monoprice cable. It's a laptop. Tried all ports.

1st opt. -Maybe re-installing the Epic 4G drivers could help you out (at least for ODIN), meanwhile you do that, take your batt. out for a couple of minutes...
2nd -Visit a neighbor or family w/ your phone on hand (& a usb to install the drivers/programs there) to start the process again. (-BEWARE!, NOT EVERYONE HAS A "MAC" & FOR WINDOWS COMES 2 DIFFERENT OP.SIST. 32BIT & 64BIT!, BE SURE TO KNOW WHICH ONE TO INSTALL FIRST!)
3rd -Are you paying monthly for the warranty? (I think you know where I'm going, LOL!).
Sorry about Heimdall but I've never use it so, can't help you there. I really hope that my little knowledge can help you here, =!

I appreciate the reply. There ain't no warranty on this thing. Bought it on eBay and flashed it to Boost. I'm usually a Windows guy, but my work provided me with a decent Mac, so I handed my Windows machine off to my daughter.

I remember seeing some command lines for Heimdall on a Mac somewhere. This is in a different phones forum but may help with it:

I think you need Ubuntu to get it working properly.

So I've tried connecting my phone to several computers and they all end up saying that the device is not recognized. Because of this, I can't even odin my phone to stock or anything else. So I can't exactly call sprint or samsung about it. It was working fine up until just now. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Did you download the Samsung driver ?

Yes, sounds like your data cable is going bad. Grab another one. Palm Pre or Blackberry has heavy duty cables. Heard there was a good one for $2 on Amazon. Get fresh drivers from Samsung's site or from here:

Hope this helps.
Yea I've gotten the right drivers. Right now, I'm in the process of doing root and flashing roms without a computer... using rom manager. Maybe a new rom will fix it. I'm going to order a new data cable and hope that will work.

Hey man, same thing was happening to me, I ended up bricking my epic with the stock cord, but I grabbed my brothers evo cord, and worked first try, dump the stock cable definitely.

I used this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062395
Also, instead of using cwm 2.x, you can go the development forum and get the new cwm and flash that instead, just make the necessary adjustments (i.e. when flashing using ROM manager, tap 3.x instead of 2.x etc. etc.)
I am now running gingerbread on here. And I am going to try a new cable that I ordered later this week.

Need stock rom

Haven't been able to find the stock rom. Been about 6 months since I used this phone. I followed the wiki but mediaupload has been taking down to stop pirates...
And if possible a short instruction on how to install via odin. Either in phone or pda would be my only question.
Okay so download this stock tar. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501424.
1. If you have the victory PIT already then don't download the odin and pit download if you do its there.
2. Open oding put the pit in the pit section and check the pda box and put the stock tar there. Make sure only auto reboot is checked and hit start.
If you run into any trouble come back an ask . Make sure you have a good cable and not the stock one good luck.

I have the drivers from Samsung's site. I've tried 5 different cables. I don't have any problems putting the device into download mode. But getting odin to see it is next to impossible.
you might try heimdall. it comes with USB drivers that you can force to work essentially. All you'll have to do is pull all the files out of the tar and put them in each section in heimdall. works great otherwise.

Hmm seems like you may have a bad usb port..why do need to go back to the stock ROM anyways?
What exactly happens? Unknown device or does the computer fail to recognise a usb is plugged in? If its unknown that's a driver issue if it fails to see a usb then your usb port on the phone may be bad.
Also is your windows box 64 or 32bit? 64 tend to have more issues if you don't have the proper drivers..let me link you the ones I use.

Unknown device. Installed the drivers you posted. Rebooted my pc to see if that would fix and still unknown device. Connected my Epic 4g touch using same cable and same port and that was recognized with no problems.
Drivers?
perhaps uninstall ET4G drivers first, perhaps it is causing some issue.
so now uninstall all epic (OG and touch) drivers, reboot, install epic 4g 64bit drivers.
open odin, put phone in dl/mode, connect to pc ... is happy?

[Q] Semi(Soft)-Bricked Unflashable Epic - What to do now?

*First of all, let me say that this is a repost from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310&page=27), and I apologize for that fact. I have been severely neglecting food and sleep trying to fix my phone, and I really, really didn't feel like typing the whole damned story up again. Any assistance or insight would be deeply appreciated...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I did it this time I think. I've hacked, modded, wiped, and flashed my phone since I got it last year, and although I've gotten to places where I thought I had totally fuxored things up beyond recovery, every single time in the past I've been able to bring it back from the brink of oblivion. I am exceedingly resourceful and tenacious, which can be both a good and bad thing. Good thing when I am able to fix things that seem unfixable. Bad when I forget about things like eating or sleeping.
Here's the present situation: 4 days ago I was trying to flash a new modem (FB15)(something I know well how to do as I've done it many, many times before) through Odin, when it stalled out near the beginning of the process. This is not unusual with Odin, so I've gotten into the habit of closing it, pulling the battery, and starting again. This time, however, no matter what I've tried, I cannot get Odin to successfully flash. It fails every single time. Either that or it stalls yet again.
At the moment I can only get into 2 modes on my phone: download mode (which can't actually download anything apparently) and the very unpleasant computer--!--phone screen when I try to boot it up or go into recovery. This is the longest my phone has been unusable. I've been intensely focused on fixing it since it was semi-bricked. The ridiculously frustrating and annoying thing is that the computer I'm using (and I've used multiple to try to fix this across Windows, Linux, and Mac) usually says "USB device not recognized" when I plug my phone in while in download mode, no matter the state of the drivers, and when it does recognize it and it is visible in Odin, it means nothing because Odin fails no matter what file I'm trying to flash. When the computer and Odin DO recognize the phone, and when Odin doesn't hang, very occasionally it will give me some odd error message like "PIT mapping not found" or "cannot open COM port". I've tried so many of the things I've tried in the past that have worked: changing USB ports, rebooting the computer between attempts, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, going into download mode with the SD-card and battery out and in, loading Odin after or before putting the phone into download mode, trying on different computers with different versions of Windows (I even tried one Mac with iOS 10.4 and a Linux notebook with Ubuntu), trying different USB cables, flashing with the battery and SD card out, trying to flash different files (besides the original modem.bin which stalled), running Odin as administrator, yadda, yadda, yadda...on and on, for days. I even just went out and bought a high-performance, super-short USB cable (6-inches) and a USB 3.0 PCI card so I'd have dedicated USB. Nada.
Basically my phone seems to have a broken download mode with potentially wonky USB (Samsung USB has never been good). I've been seeing if I can get Heimdall to work, though there is a bit of a learning curve with that program, no matter how easy people say it is. I've never even tried flashing it with it yet since I haven't gotten together all of the apparently necessary files. I also just found One-Click Unbrick, and while I was excited originally, it seems that the same outcome is the result. No matter what I do to get everything just right to be able to succeed, it fails. Java is installed, Heimdall is apparently installed, and the One-Click Unbrick drivers have been installed every time I've tried to run it. Nada again.
If my phone is able to get into download mode, yet that seems to be borked, what is my recourse? I'm at the end of my rope...*sinks into a depressed lump on the floor*.
ANY assistance would be immensely appreciated. Thank you all in advance. I'm not incredibly hopeful at this point, but I am (fortunately or unfortunately) still tenacious as hell. :-/

I thank you much for your suggestion. I've tried flashing the EC05 modem tar and both the tar.md5 and the straight tar file of the stock EL ROM, though surprisingly I haven't tried the straight EL30 modem tar yet. I'll try when I get home. The main problem is not getting Odin to COM, but getting it to flash anything. It either stalls, fails, or doesn't see the phone...download mode seems to be basically useless.

Let me find you some reliable files
Odin 1.85
Stock El30
Windows 32 bit and 64bit drivers
This should be enough to get you on your way. Oh and if you can at all possible reinstall windows prior to loading these drivers. i know someone who had to do it before their computer would recognize their phone. I've been in this kind of situation i had someone root my phone and is computer was fubar'd and it took him 3 days to unbrick my phone. This is what helped him he kept recieving unknown device. This is what helped is what helped him id advice the same. Once you have windows reinstalled download the three things and install the drivers and give it a shot.

well you can do it over a virtual machine but unsure how to do this and if this will work entirely it might it might not im not too fluent with virtual machines.. but it simulates a working computer so id imagine you can install drivers and see if it will then recognize your phone.

I FIXED IT! My phone which has been dead for 5 days lives again! Resurrected!
I thank you all for your time and assistance. It was very deeply appreciated.
I fixed it by circumventing Winblows entirely. I created a second partition on my friend's hard drive, installed Ubuntu Linux 11.10, then went through the pretty simple process of setting up Android SDK/ADB and Heimdall, and all of the dependencies that they required. The ridiculous thing is that I fixed it without even trying. I was simply seeing if Heimdall could detect my phone (which I had connected and in DL mode), which I noticed that it did. I had no idea what Download PIT did, so I pressed it, and lo and behold, it did something amazing, and rebooted my phone. I am elated, exhausted, triumphant!
WHOOT!!!
I kNEW I would figure it out. I always do...lol.
In messing up my phone so many times, I have gotten VERY good at fixing whatever nonsense happens to arise.
Thanks again all.

EDIT: I meant PRINT PIT, not Download PIT. ;-)

[Q] Epic 4G (D700), ODIN and "Unknown Device"

Okay i have seen similar posts around, and I apologize if this bothers anyone but when I post a thread asking for help, its because I've tried most solutions and have gotten nowhere. I recently bought one.of.these devices and I have to say for an old 1GHz device, its pretty darn smooth! (Got it for my girl who broke her phone. Cost $20 MINT screen, and some scuffs.on the trim believe it or not, fully functional, clean ESN)
I love for all devices in the house to be rooted and off that dreaded Gingerbread android. I have been stuck since i got it trying to use ODIN to flash CWM, and root it to flash a JB based rom. Problem is i installed the drivers, got the ODIN version required, have the CWM tar file, etc, the phone gets detected while on in ADB, normal file transfer way and so on. BUT Download Mode? Nope, i get the dreaded "Unknown Device" issue.
Now as I always read before annoying others, I read that switching the USB cable helps. I've tried 8 USB cables, and no go. 2 Samsungs (i read those are #1 NO GOs), 3 LG cables (device doesnt appear at all), and 3 non brand. No good.
I know Mobile Odin wont work, I rooted it using Framaroot.apk for now, but I need CWM for the rom flashing part.
So now that its 2013, is there really no other way other than ODIN? I tried using ROM Manager, it flashes but doesnt do a thing except boot into stock recovery (miracle no bricks or bootlooping). If I had Linux on my PC, will it get detected or its just the darn cable?
OR is there a specific USB cable brand I should go for that is guaranteed to work? I dont mind buying it just have been waiting to make sure.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

The drivers have been properly installed, there is no updating the drivers manually, effing Windows won't let me. What the hell can I do now?
If only Mobile Odin worked, or there were other methods, I wouldn't be going thru this mess...
Like where did I go wrong?
I would swap out Windows to Linux, but I don't see how that will get the device detected.
Matter of fact I was trying to install a Linux based OS from my flash drivd, and it corrupted it. Theres 8gb Ill never see again...
Any other ideas? Will Linux pick up the device?
EDIT: This USB unlike the others BRIEFLY detects it as a USB Device, then goes back to unknown when I uninstall it thru Device Manager

Are you plugging into a port directly on the motherboard? (IE: A port on the back of the machine.) Using an emulated port or hub can cause this at times.
FYI, there are 2 drivers. One is for when the phone is fully booted in Android. The other is the driver when in download mode. Have you tried using another machine?

I think your issue is driver related. I had similiar issues and updated the wiki with the drivers that ended up working for me.
