Rooting keeps failing. Any alternate method? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to find the answer of my question at many places but didn't have any success. I tried to root Droid incredible using unrevoked3 on 3 different computers ( all running Windows 7) but no success. On two pcs running amd processors, it don't go past pushing recovery image but the one Intel based, I got until phone reboots for first time and it just say rooting failed. When I unlock the mobile screen there is a notification saying unrevoked service stopped unexpectedly.
I have tried adb method to rebootin recovery but can't get phone in adb mod.
I am not new to rooting or programming but I am really stuck here. Phone is running froyo and have a bad esn. It is not also connected to any kind of cellular network. I did hard reset of phone many times but nothing has changed

My only suggestion is to root using a Mac computer. No need for installing drivers and such, just run Unrevoked. I have zero experience rooting via Windows.

Thanks for suggestion but prob is I don't have access to a MAC system. I can install Linux though if needed. What you say?

I'm pretty sure you can use unrevoked through Linux (preferably Ubuntu) in a virtualbox. Saves the trouble of actually partitioning your hard drive and everything for something you're only going to use for twenty minutes.

One thing that works for me when I am jailbreaking iphones is to open Task Manager and set UnRevoked exe to use CPU 0 and make the priority Real Time.
Also exit any programs that monitor for new drives to pull media from. DropBox, Picasa, crap that came with your scanner/printer.

Root Help

I couldnt post it in the actual root thread so I have to post it here.
I am trying to use the autoroot2.4 but I cannot get passed the verifying process.
What are the very basic initial steps that I should take before I run the autoroot2.4?
I have the right PC36IMG file and I put it on the sd card.
I tried the fastzip bat file and it just sat at waiting for fastboot.
I am just totally lost I supposed because I followed all the instruction on the site and on the video and I basically got no where.
To make it easier, just use unrevoked. Go into the bootloader, turn phone off, power on while holding vol+down, select clear storage.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install Download and install the hboot drivers.
If you have htc sync installed, uninstall it. If not, install it, then immediately uninstall it.
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ download unrevoked [will come up as reflash package exe]
On your phone, go into settings > applications > development > make sure usb debugging is checked
Connect your phone to the pc, no apps running, in charge only mode, then run the reflash exe [unrevoked]
It'll take ~3 minutes, and reboot about twice, let it run its full course.
@the roxxors
If using unrevoked, don't people have to manually install the flash_image file to actually flash things? Just curious, cuz a few months ago, I was seeing people who used unrevoked, but couldn't flash anything,
Turns out, flash_image wasn't installed.
Just curious about this.

I don't recall, but it's possible. I rooted both a Droid Incredible and my EVO 4G using the unrevoked method and it was quick and painless. Once the OP gets his phone rooted, I recommend that he flash amon RA recovery over the Clockworkmod recovery that Unrevoked will install.

I tried running unrevoked from my girl's laptop using Windows 7 the other day, and I had such a hard time, that I gave up. I drove to my house, picked up my laptop with Windows XP and all the SDK goodies installed already, and I rooted two Evos in about 12 minutes. As long as I use my computer, unrevoked is painless.
As a matter of fact, I'm going to buy them some pizza right now. I've been lazy and used unrevoked for a bunch of phones now, so it is long overdue.
If someone cant flash after root, they prob need to install flash_image with termiinal emulator from market. You can find the exact commands to type onb any of the old root tuts (in particular fastRX8s tut)
I've rooted my phone 3 times with unrevoked and it worked perfectly everytime. I keep meaning to try some of the other methods, but it's just easy, especially since I'm on a Mac.
yeah the no recovery image after unrevoked, happens some times but all you need to do is download free rom manager from the market and try to backup your rom, it will say you need clockworkmod recovery and it will flash it for you, after that you are good to go

I agree. Using unrevoked with a Mac is effortless and no, I'm not a Mac fanboy...lol....By the way, using ADB is almost as effortless.

I've been meaning to sit down and setup ADB, it's just one of those things I can't get motivated to do, even though I know it won't be that hard and will probably benefit me.
Like running for 30 min. Not that hard, but TV is easier.
Unrevoked fan here, simply and error proof.
lol....I hear ya. I used to be a fitness fanatic when I lived in Orlando, but here in NC everything is so laid back to the point of making me lazy. I will be moving back to Orlando within the next month or two and then back to the gym and running. I can't wait...

[GUIDE] Rooting Sprint Intercept froyo 2.2 [06-02-11]

I've successfully permanently rooted my Sprint Intercept with the latest 2.2 froyo on it without installing custom kernels and wanted to share steps I took since there is some confusion and differences.
Original guide link.
Things you'll need:
Root files.
Samsung drivers.
Windows 7/vista/xp 32 bit.
Steps:
Install Samsung drivers
Reboot your PC
Reboot your phone, connect it to your PC with a usb cable
Put your phone in debugging mode (menu->settings->applications->development)
Extract root files to your c:\intercept-root folder (or any folder you wish)
Start windows command line (start->run->CMD)
Change to your "intercept-root" folder
Execute START_ROOT command
Follow instructions
Once done, don't forget to install Superuser apk.
after you rooted it you were able to put a different rom on it right. trying to clear out the garbage that comes on it.

No, this is just simply to root and remove stuff you don't want. I suggest Titanium backup. There is no proper recovery for the intercept that I know of. The one existing can be flashed and it does work but has some issues with what it backs up and what it restores. It's not complete and may create problems.
If you are rooting the latest 2.2 froyo, after removing all sprint apps you are left with true bare stock so there is really no need for anything else. Make sure you don't remove the sprint vm even if you are using google voice. It needs to be on because of system integration.
you mae one error. the drivers can't be installed on windows 7. I have gotten the drivers from the moment to work once but now its nothing. my computer no longer recognizes the phone when i plug it into the computer. which means that i cant root it or anything. sucks and i need serious help.
hmmm, same problem
Find a friend with a XP laptop and use that?
Glad to know - i have failed at rooting my intercept a few times and have been using my windows 7 box. Trying these instructions from a laptop - will report back!
Success
Using nothing but a old crappy dell laptop runing windows XP I was able to gain perma root using the instructions provided here. On my first run of the script the process failed, I simply did what the program told me to (run the script again) and it worked like a charm.
OP - thank you so very much for taking the time to post.
Question for anyone: now that I have root, I *really* want to be able to use my Intercept as a wi-fi hotspot. Can I do this? Where do I start?
No errors. I got drivers under Windows 7 working but I clearly said it has to be 32 bit as 64 does not work. Check your version.

Download wireless tether app. I've had troubles with it in the past so if that one doesn't work try Barnacle.
how to flash cmo1 custom recovery after phone is rooted?
Just throw intercept root on sdcard and run

I don't believe there is a supported recovery for the intercept. There is one hacked up but there are some issues with it so I don't recommend it.

UPDATE: OK, I think this is what he was linking to. But my Antivirus doesnt like it. It says it's a virus. A severe virus.

please help with root issue (searched for 2 days & tried everything)

yes i have searched endlessly.
no i am not in anyway new to rooting (not claiming to be on the level of probably most here)
i have tried everything to get my replacement DInc to root. one confusing issue is that the error i get seems to bounce around all over the place. from back CID missing, to failed to gain root, to failed to flash recovery and is your firmware too new. i have tried:
* multiple versions of unrevoked.
* with and without sd card
* on charge only and on disk drive
* with and without firewalls enabled.
* did factory resets
* flashed a new RUU
i am almost sure i am forgetting something here but cant think offhand as i am about to go crazy with this thing. please if you have any suggestions then i will try anything. i know it may sound childish but if i cant root this thing after being used to it then i almost assume go back to my old razor.
thanks in advance
Sure you have the correct drivers (for windows machines)? Sometimes people have had to use different computers, couldn't hurt if you have access to another machine.

Try setting up the drivers from scratch for you new device. The same drivers worked when I rooted my buddies phone, but I had to re-download them from scratch to get it to work.

already tried this. actually i just installed windows 7 ultimate on my laptop just a few days ago so it was completely clean. did everything from square one with no changes in issues. i called verizon today and told them that the replacement device i received was doing alot a odd things (no mention of real issue obviously) so without hesitation he said he would send me another out. so hopefully there is just something about this particular device that is abnormal. i would still like to keep hearing opinions and trying solutions tho. who knows that something in the refurbish methods arent causing this currently. thanks to all.
anymore guesses.
I had problems using Unrevoked on windows. I put it on my Mac, and it worked the first time, no drivers or anything needed. Probably not the most helpful advice, but if you have access to a Mac, might as well give it a try.
Uninstall dropbox and PDA net if present. SD is fat32? Using stock USB for device? Launching unrevoked as admin? Right click on the exploit before running, see if properties show it from unknown computer, and unblock it if needed. Same story with the drivers, check and unblock from properties, then reinstall as admin.
Tried a different USB port on the PC?

Did you get this resolved?

wanted to post back the outcome which hopefully at some point will help someone. i made sure every possible combination of drivers, programs, menu options enabled/disabled appropriately. nothing fixed this. verizon sent me a new device out (obviously they werent told my reasoning), powered it up, plugged it into the same computer and 2 minutes later was rooted with not the first issue. thus i have concluded that there had to be something in the programming that would not accept root. unsure how considering i even ran the RUU multiple times. thankfully they sent me a replacement for my replacement cause dealing with a stock phone after being rooted just would not work out.
thanks all
Yea if that phone was having that much trouble getting root then it probably could have bricked in the long run. Good thing you did get a replacement and were able to root in the end.

ReRoot:Failing bad after Ruu to 3.70

Hello All after searching and following directions of multiple threads including this one http://vaelek.com/index.php?/topic/1666-guide-how-to-un-root-re-root-your-evo-4g/ Unrevoked3 method and this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8223391&postcount=1 Auto root method, Im completely stumped and lost on what to do next. Im a half a noob.
After having some flashing issues with any non aosp Gb roms, I was forced to do Unroot rerrot method in hopes that would fix it.
So I Ruu'd to this setup:
hardware 0003
2.15.00.11.19
3.70.651.1
pri 1.90_003
prl 60679
and was able to get back to stock 2.2 and s-on
So then trying to root again, ran into issues.
Unrevoked method:
Installed usb drivers & htc syn(then uninstall)
Debugging on
Phone charge mode
and when i get to step to run Unrevoked, I get to the familiar waiting for device.
Does this everytime
Note that might be important: Step Where i go into Device Manger, I never have "Other Devices" listed-Android 1.0 like its says it should. However, Im still able to install/update drivers under"Disk Drives" Htc Android Phone Usb Device
One Click AutoRoot method:
Followed steps as it says and when i get to right click on Autoroot.bat & run administrator Step, Black box pops up, Runs through its thing it says it doesnt recognize advice. Tried over and over same thing.
btw im on Windows Vista 64 bit
Heard that trying a previous version of unrevoked3(3.2) could solve this issue but had problems finding anything other than updated version. v also tried switching usb cables and other little things you would not think it would be but im desperate.
i dont know what else to do. Ive been searching google all day. Please please help me.

Ruu'd back to 2.2, my current set up is in op. And yes installed drivers, followed exact directions of the both Unrevoked method and autoroot method exactly as the directions say. Neither method is recognizing my device. See op.

After you installed the drivers, you see android bootloader interface once the phone is plugged in? Also, reboot your phone and pc, then try unrevoked again.
Yes I see that but I dont see Android 1.0 under other devices in device manager. Thought this could be part of the issue as well. Your suppose to see that after installing drivers and plunging in phone.
As a last resort I'm trying a different pc as we speak. If you have a step by step directions maybe something that is easy to follow that would be great. Starting the downloads now on the new pc.

This is my guide to rooting...so far flawless victory for those that have used it.
Rooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p...driver_install ; Download the hboot drivers needed for rooting. The instructions are also there of how to install them, straight forward.
2. Download unrevoked3 > http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ ; It will show up as reflash_package on your desktop; leave it alone for now
3. On your phone from a home screen: menu > settings > applications > development and make sure usb debugging is checked; needed so that unrevoked can find the phone; never turn this off
4. http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/ ; Download htc sync and install it. After that, uninstall the program from your computer ; you only need the drivers from it.
5. On your phone, connect the to the pc in CHARGE ONLY, do not mount as a disk, ect, has to be charge only
6. On the desktop, run unrevoked [reflash_package], accept the disclaimer, blah blah
7. Just sit your phone down and let it do its thing. It'll take about 5 minutes, and the phone will reboot twice. Once its done, it'll say done. You can open your app drawer and you'll see an app that says superuser, and then you're done.
IF unrevoked tells you 'is your firmware too new?' boot into the bootloader [while turning the phone on, hold vol+down till you see a white screen with androids skateboarding.] Use the volume keys to navigate after the scan completes to clear storage [a factory reset, data will be lost] and then use the power button to select it, then repeat step #6.
To tether, you can flash a custom rom of your choosing after you've browsed, and then use the built in hot spot, or download wireless tether from the market, more later after you root.
Unrooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ; Scroll down to the FAQs, then download the unrevoked s-on zip. This places the security back on your phone, because rooting makes it s-off, and if s-on, quickest way to tell your phone was rooted.
2. Flash that file from recovery, then boot back into the bootloader [vol+down while turning phone on] and verify until its s-on.
3. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip ; rename that file to PC36IMG, place on the root of your sdcard [not in a folder] then flash it in the bootloader. When the scan that normally does nothing, it'll detect that file. Apply the update then reboot. That's a stock 3.70 firmware file, it'll take you back to stock, unrooted, s-on.
Ok will try it and let you know thank you so much

Rooting problem with UnRevoked...

Hey guys i need help with rooting me Incredible... Im using unrevoked 3.32 but after my phone reboots i get a "Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. You either have bad drivers or your usb cord is faulty.

Try a different USB port and/or cable. Also, If you're on a laptop make sure you're laptop is plugged in and you are using performance power settings. Kind of sounds like the port is going into sleep mode and the app can't pick it up because it sees the port shut off.

You have admin rights on the machine? When you download the Unrevoked exploit, unzip it and single click and right mouse button the executable, properties, unblock if blocked.
And, when running the unblocked executable, if Vista or Win7, right click and run as administrator.

My only suggestion is if you still aren't properly rooted, try running unrevoked on a Mac. I rooted my Inc using a friend's Mac as I did not have to install drivers and it worked well. Is this an option for you?
not really.i dont know anyone that has a mac.
I did root my girl's HTC Desire about a month ago, and I couldn't get Unrevoked to run at all, just stuck @ Waiting for device... I installed the modified USB drivers from Unrevoked before hand, and that didn't work. I also installed the HTC Sync drivers, and after I did that, things worked. I had to use a different tool to root her phone, but maybe this is the issue?
I have seen where you can install HTC Sync, then uninstall just the program and leave the drivers.
I am rooting my friend's DInc tonight after work, I'll make note of the steps I use (it's been awhile!), and post back.
EDIT: WOOHOO!!! SUCCESS!! I had to uninstall and reinstall HTC Sync then uninstall it again

go to application, development, check mark to usb debugging before you connect the phone to the pc. the Unrevoked will let you know that your phone was connected.. if i did it anybody can do it because im kind of new to this. i did it to my htc evo, htc hero "with Superone Click" and droid incredible so far
