So is there a running bounty for root on FroYo on the EVO? I took the OTA update and am wishing I had just rooted / waited... sigh...
If there is no bounty, I'd like to suggest one.
Also, is there a twitter feed we could follow so we know the moment it is out?
Also, has anyone tried to contact a sprint store to complain about current version and ask about rolling back to older version?
Why did this get moved to the HTC desire forum? The request was for the EVO... which is WHY I posted it there.
There seem to be a lot of EVO threads turning up in the Desire forums these days!
Seems to be some overzealous and incorrect moderation!
Regards,
Dave
I'd be interested in pitching in on this. My wifes evo has been a pain in the ass. It had its issues with 2.1 but has had nothing but issues since 2.2. Before the witch trials begin, I wanted to root her phone but the wife got all,,,, well, you married guys know where I'm going with this!
I was an idiot and upgraded OTA to 2.2 instead of flashing to a custom 2.2 ROM. With that said, if there is a bounty I'd gladly throw in.
I know i know
this is a very touchy topic so i wanna take a different approach,,,lets say that devs are working hard on a root for 2.2 stock for all of us that are stuck ....why not let this thread be the new discussion for what is happening with root and why it is not happening yet ..like what devs are running into as far as problems go and what not...i am not a dev but i have been roming since the droid and hero an moment have come out ...why dont we help the devs as much as possible and all work together to achieve this common goal and not fight about it all day ...cause in the end we all just want root and everyone will shut up and start enjoying what their evo is really capable of ...thank you devs for all the hard work and such ..lets get this thing cracked asap...
Ps ...please would a dev who is working on this step up and give a status of what exactly is happening and if they need help...
There was no need to create a new thread for this...though I could understand tour frustration if I was in your shoes...
Sorry sir... you have wait like everyone else whoa stuck on the latest OTA.

Yes! I would love to have a real time transcript of all the devs' thoughts.
That would be fantastic.
Somehow I doubt that they would be jumping in here to update us, civilians, about their progress
Not to be the bad apple, but speaking realistically. When the Evo had 2.1, the Dev made comments all the time about that process and so on, and what to look for. This is different. No one is commenting at all. In fact, they are probable reading all these threads, looking at everyone's comment, calling each other and laughing. Why would they risk root, to help us?.. I'm just living and accepting the fact to live with the Official 2.2. Bottom line is, if they, the developers, were working on a exploit. What harm would it do to let the public know.. I'm not mad at the Dev. For 1, they're not getting paid an hourly rate to do this for the majority of people who will just download there hack without donating.. 2, they are already rooted. IT would be a different story if all the dev weren't rooted, and wanted total control over their phone. Then this would push them to find a way... And i mean thats just the way the world works. So you can't knock them for not finding a way... It is what it is... Just realisticly speaking
this process is killing me.....i miss hacking my nexus one, this evo 2.2 is a iphone that i cant fix up and customize...this sucks!!
I think the developers are busy on their ROMs. This seems to be more for the hackers. My question is: who are the hackers that have broken the ROMs in the past?

Think about it. If you were a dev with a rooted EVO, would you unroot and install 2.2 OTA and lose root, just so you could see if you could crack the 2.2 OTA?
God bless one of them if that's what they decided to do, but I wouldn't do that if I was in their shoes.

No. And like I stated in my first message, the developers are busy writing ROMs.
you dont need to unroot your phone to start trying to crack 2.2, unless im mistaken you can run the 2.2 image the sdk emulator and work on it that way. its how those who are writing roms probably test out their changes.

That may be true, but at some point the only way to be sure that the crack works is to test it on an EVO that has 2.2 either as purchased, or OTA updated. My point is that after anyone has put a ton of time and effort into getting something working just the way they want it to, there isn't much incentive to go and screw it up just to make someone else happy.

maybe you didnt get that you can have an image of the 2.2 ota.
and as a developer/hacker (i dont do phones so i cant comment on status here) the incentive is the fact you did it. trust, thats a very good feeling.
i understand its easy for everyone whos rooted to say, be patient, but thats all that can be currently offered.

My reading comprehension is adequate, thank you. My expectations are reasonable as well.
Rooting is a luxury not something that has to be offered up to the public. Up until recently it wasnt even considered completly legal. So for everyone here including myself for that matter that disregarded the warnings and took the update(also for the people who got their phones with 2.2 stock, thats just the way it goes.) Wait patiently, the devs dont owe you periodic updates on what they are doing with their free time. And enjoy your android phones, and if you wanna customize your phone, there are ways from the market you could do so with widgets and replacement launchers that can make your phone look original without rooting.
Agreed! Well said.
Hi, let me start by apologizing for my ignorance but ive always been in love with phones for i dont know how long and i finally have a good one specifically the evo and even though i love phones i no little about the software but i want to learn. can anyone point to the start i want to learn rooting flashing ROMs and kernels the works im not so much interested in developing but that might change once im more knowledgeable in the whole process im just some high school kid so my tech knowledge right now is pretty much zero please help i no everyone here started somewhere so can u tell me where i just want to make my phone as good as possible
Let me ask you this: What software version is on your phone right now? 2.1 or 2.2?
im running 2.2 on my evo
Take a gander at the development forum. There is a guide that was posted just a couple of days ago about rooting 2.2. Great timing for you since this method was only just discovered.
A piece of advice...after you obtain root access to your phone, be cautious about taking anymore updates from the carrier as these updates often break your root access. Every update is usually followed by a rooted version here in the forums sometimes on the same day or before.
Welcome!
Oh..and be sure to do a search in the forums for any issues you may have before posting a question to the forums. Chances are it has already been addressed...unless you enjoy getting flamed.

Be sure to check out the evo wiki too. It has many guides and tutorials to get you started in the right direction.

That's what Unrevoked Forever is for, I thought? But still, just because you put on a Kevlar vest doesn't mean you should go around taking shots to the chest. Hey, that rhymes! Copyright.

LOL! Except we're Android people, so in the spirit of openness, I demand that you make that quote 100% free and available. (kinda like how people bash the unrevoked team about not giving away their methods...)

True, but wouldn't be plausible for an OTA to be released that turned the security permissions back on and plugged the exploits for rooting? That's why I just say be cautious. UF probably will work "forever" but it's no reason to be careless. Sticking with the rooted ROMs is just a safer bet.
So if you don't want to loose root, give those Sprint OTAs the boot.
Yeah...I'm not copyrighting that. It sucks! lol!

Thanks a lot for your time and your effort!
Awesome, feefeeboomboom/isaac. The flipside stinks on 2.1. There is no storage space. I really really want 2.2 or 2.3 to be able to store my apps on the SD card.
I hope it you are making progress and that you stay with your GF and that she lets you play with her phone.
Any Updates?
I'm willing to help
Never deved on an android phone before, but I'm a linux admin, and I love doing custom hacks on these things. If I can be of help, let me know. Trying to see how to get the ball rolling on setting up a CM6 version for this phone right now. I'm pretty sure with the limited hardware that this phone has, CM7 would be a huge overkill -- if it would run at all.

Well, you caught me. I actually think it would run fine, but it is much easier to use the same kernel and just mod everything else. You can run 2.2 on 2.1 kernels, but you can't run 2.3 on 2.1 or 2.2. So, with that said, it's much easier for me to just take a current image, strip out the bloat, and give everyone a new version based on 2.2 that works out of the box than finding all the missing kernel modules for 2.3 and building it from there.
In short, I'm lazy, and I want to have a newer release out faster.
haha oh ok no sweat! Sorry wasn't tryin to call you out...just curious. Anything that can be done would be great! Hope you get something going soon!
I was thinking of maybe getting the flipside on te insurance program (from a backflip) but it seems like you guys are worse off than us. i cant seem o find source code on moto's site... do you guys know where it might be?
Any progress on a CM7 port? I just got my GF a flipside since she can't deal with on screen keyboards....and she previously had a backflip with CM7 lol
so I've been visiting recently on this and the cyanogen mod forums and it doesn't look like anyone has hit gold yet, or have I missed something somewhere and all the cool kids are having fun with their flipsides and I'm out in the lurch?
My wife too got this phone because of the keyboard...If no development comes soon...I think I might just try and sell it to whatever sucker wants to buy it and then head on over to Canada (eh?) and purchase a G2...
maybe soon...
Motorola is beta testing froyo right now. We may soon have a valid froyo image for the awesome development teams to work with.
i just set my phone back to factory and updated it cuz i was goin to get the 3d today but my wife wants to use the upgrade cuz she hates her phone (epic) so now i want to root my phone back to the kingdom port is there a way to do this
No way to root the update unless you're still s-off. Why don't you get the 3d & give her your phone, then sell the Epic?

Yes there is!! Click your heels together three times and say to yourself...'theres nothing like a rooted evo...theres nothing like a rooted evo..theres nothing like a rooted evo...'.
Or, do a search...or even just glance at the Evo Q&A page for 12 seconds and you will see that this has been asked and answered endless times already.

(I'm fairly new here also, but I took the time to read the rules...and learned how to use a search button so that I can simply browse the forums every day to see for myself when that magical root is found for the evo, without getting on everyone else's nerves)

Flash a PC36IMG in recovery of either amon_ra or clockwork recovery, then flash a rom like normal.

I would just like to know they are working on it. TeamWIN for the 3V03D at least update us that they are doing something.
There is nothing from the Dev's for the Supersonic. So, maybe that's why we keep asking!
Internet Police, Search! LMFAO! Get a life.
been monitoring the irc channels for 2 days now, read yesterday that teamwin is working on it, and hboot got pwnd , they are working on a stable release...how true this is i cannot say , but this is the chatter ive seen on the channel, lets hope its coming soon , have patience all , these guys rock but they have lives also and they do this for free, so be mindful of this too

Well said... Hey people if you are still asking these questions then you have no clue how the Evo fourms work or for that matter xda. I have seen some other forums and this place gives you clear and well informed information. Great stickys and too me clear cut headers to let you know what roms have, last updates 4g no 4g as well as a host of other info. Also great OP info that outlines what to do, if any bugs, etc...
If you just come here and type a question especially one that is clearly all over these forums my suggestion to you is since you are waiting for your phone to achieve a root method why don't you just start to read up and learn about rooting flashing roms and kernels. You do this so hopefully you can help the community instead of filling the pages with repetitive questions and rants about why others who do this for free can't fulfill your needs fast enough.
Just My Thoughts....

That is actually not true, no one heard anything from them until they found a promising root method for the Evo 3D.
And it is the same for the Evo, mainly because their is no point in telling everyone something like, "tried that.....that didn't work, tried this......this didn't work either". So I seriously doubt you will hear anything from anyone until someone finds an exploit that works.

Also keep in mind that these are security exploits. They can't keep them hidden forever, as HTC can basically find out what it is once it's released. But there's no point in publicizing "Hey, we found a huge hole at line 2337 of Rosie.c!!!" and make it easy for HTC to get a head start on patching it.
