So is there a running bounty for root on FroYo on the EVO? I took the OTA update and am wishing I had just rooted / waited... sigh...
If there is no bounty, I'd like to suggest one.
Also, is there a twitter feed we could follow so we know the moment it is out?
Also, has anyone tried to contact a sprint store to complain about current version and ask about rolling back to older version?
Why did this get moved to the HTC desire forum? The request was for the EVO... which is WHY I posted it there.
There seem to be a lot of EVO threads turning up in the Desire forums these days!
Seems to be some overzealous and incorrect moderation!
Regards,
Dave
I'd be interested in pitching in on this. My wifes evo has been a pain in the ass. It had its issues with 2.1 but has had nothing but issues since 2.2. Before the witch trials begin, I wanted to root her phone but the wife got all,,,, well, you married guys know where I'm going with this!
I was an idiot and upgraded OTA to 2.2 instead of flashing to a custom 2.2 ROM. With that said, if there is a bounty I'd gladly throw in.

Why can't we have Froyo yet already???? What's the hold up? By the time, we get it... 3.0 will be around the corner...
Yours doesn't have it?
Yep. I have it
Sent from my Evo on on the Now network from Sprint
oh and duck Apple
I'm not talking about hacked custom roms.. I'm talking about offical release from HTC. I want Froyo that is fully function including 4g
you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

"without 4G"
HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Uhh mayb not everyone has the time to research the whole history/background of their phone as you do...like me i switch phones every 2 months that means i'd be doing more research on my phones history then using the damn thing.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

This may be a little off topic, but if I root my EVO what ROM should I use if I want Froyo and Sense?

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. He's put a lot of work into them and i'll be checking out the Sense ROM for sure tonight. Probably bounce back and forth between the CM6 that i'm using now and Ava's Sense ROM.

I respect your desire for Sense, however, I see no Sense in it.

maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.
I know i know
this is a very touchy topic so i wanna take a different approach,,,lets say that devs are working hard on a root for 2.2 stock for all of us that are stuck ....why not let this thread be the new discussion for what is happening with root and why it is not happening yet ..like what devs are running into as far as problems go and what not...i am not a dev but i have been roming since the droid and hero an moment have come out ...why dont we help the devs as much as possible and all work together to achieve this common goal and not fight about it all day ...cause in the end we all just want root and everyone will shut up and start enjoying what their evo is really capable of ...thank you devs for all the hard work and such ..lets get this thing cracked asap...
Ps ...please would a dev who is working on this step up and give a status of what exactly is happening and if they need help...
There was no need to create a new thread for this...though I could understand tour frustration if I was in your shoes...
Sorry sir... you have wait like everyone else whoa stuck on the latest OTA.

Yes! I would love to have a real time transcript of all the devs' thoughts.
That would be fantastic.
Somehow I doubt that they would be jumping in here to update us, civilians, about their progress
Not to be the bad apple, but speaking realistically. When the Evo had 2.1, the Dev made comments all the time about that process and so on, and what to look for. This is different. No one is commenting at all. In fact, they are probable reading all these threads, looking at everyone's comment, calling each other and laughing. Why would they risk root, to help us?.. I'm just living and accepting the fact to live with the Official 2.2. Bottom line is, if they, the developers, were working on a exploit. What harm would it do to let the public know.. I'm not mad at the Dev. For 1, they're not getting paid an hourly rate to do this for the majority of people who will just download there hack without donating.. 2, they are already rooted. IT would be a different story if all the dev weren't rooted, and wanted total control over their phone. Then this would push them to find a way... And i mean thats just the way the world works. So you can't knock them for not finding a way... It is what it is... Just realisticly speaking
this process is killing me.....i miss hacking my nexus one, this evo 2.2 is a iphone that i cant fix up and customize...this sucks!!
I think the developers are busy on their ROMs. This seems to be more for the hackers. My question is: who are the hackers that have broken the ROMs in the past?

Think about it. If you were a dev with a rooted EVO, would you unroot and install 2.2 OTA and lose root, just so you could see if you could crack the 2.2 OTA?
God bless one of them if that's what they decided to do, but I wouldn't do that if I was in their shoes.

No. And like I stated in my first message, the developers are busy writing ROMs.
you dont need to unroot your phone to start trying to crack 2.2, unless im mistaken you can run the 2.2 image the sdk emulator and work on it that way. its how those who are writing roms probably test out their changes.

That may be true, but at some point the only way to be sure that the crack works is to test it on an EVO that has 2.2 either as purchased, or OTA updated. My point is that after anyone has put a ton of time and effort into getting something working just the way they want it to, there isn't much incentive to go and screw it up just to make someone else happy.

maybe you didnt get that you can have an image of the 2.2 ota.
and as a developer/hacker (i dont do phones so i cant comment on status here) the incentive is the fact you did it. trust, thats a very good feeling.
i understand its easy for everyone whos rooted to say, be patient, but thats all that can be currently offered.

My reading comprehension is adequate, thank you. My expectations are reasonable as well.
Rooting is a luxury not something that has to be offered up to the public. Up until recently it wasnt even considered completly legal. So for everyone here including myself for that matter that disregarded the warnings and took the update(also for the people who got their phones with 2.2 stock, thats just the way it goes.) Wait patiently, the devs dont owe you periodic updates on what they are doing with their free time. And enjoy your android phones, and if you wanna customize your phone, there are ways from the market you could do so with widgets and replacement launchers that can make your phone look original without rooting.
Agreed! Well said.
I gave up trolling through the hundreds (thousands?) of posts on here...
...after a failed attempt to root a new white EVO, I decided to just throw in the towel and use HTC Sync to help me establish the proper setup and then ran the latest RUU update.
I'm back to normal... not hacked or rooted but fully functional and that's all I'm going to do for now.
I came to the EVO threads after switching from a Samsung Epic... which honestly was far easier to root and much easier to keep rooted.
I love my EVO but since it's so new, it's not worth all the confusion. unrevoked looked promising but never worked for me. Zikronics(sp?) looked good but there was an error that the FAQ's or threads didn't seem to have an answer for.
Thanks to all and keep doing great work on here... I"m sure I'll acclimate to the scene, in time, but for now, I'll just watch the fun from the sidelines.
Again, thanks to all who share the passion!
I would try Universal Auto Root, worked for me the first try after getting ADB set up.
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
Although, it hasn't been updated to work with the 3.70 update if that's what you have.
Perhaps try the new Unrevoked? I believe it's been updated for the new HBOOTs, but it is still in beta as far as I know. Definitely worth a try.
Also, I think rather than trolling, you meant lurking. Haha, trolling is running around and being a **** just to make people mad.
I was wondering if anyone knew when the EVO will be getting the new HTC Sense. I know that the EVO can get the new Sense via Root, but I'm not interested in rooting. I'm looking forward to the new Sense for the fast boot and themes... lol. I'm guessing that it will be included with the Gingerbread update, but does anyone have any idea when this will be coming. I know carriers are notoriously slow to bring OS updates, and I'm not sure why, but I appreciate any information. Google and tech websites have proved useless.
Thanks.

There are actually quite a few threads around the General section here discussing and debating that very topic. The consensus is that it unknown when or if we will get the new Sense at all. Some people believe that the Evo is done getting official updates, others think we will get a Gingerbread update, but that it won't include the new sense. Others believe we will get a full Gingerbread + Sense 2.0 update. So basically, it's anyone's guess as of now. If we were indeed to actually get an official update, I myself would guess that it'll be sometime between april and july. Hopefully something gets leaked before then. As you said though, you could always Root up, and flash a sense 2.0 rom such as Myn's Warm Z ( a port from the Desire Z), MikZ, or any of Virus's Z ports. Lots of options if you're rooted.
The evo may or not get it, no one actually knows. Your best options would be to flash a ported rom, such a myn's warm z, virus z, as they're ports with the sense 2.0.
The title says it all. I just got my Supersonic 4G 3 days ago, and it unfortunately came shipped with Gingerbread 2.3.3. I love it, but as a former Droid X Owner, I would like to be able to modify it, and flash the roms I know and love onto it.
Is there anybody I can follow on twitter, or a thread on here I can follow to know when a root for 2.3.3 comes out?
Thanks!
Devs are workin on it remember devs are like u and me they have lives and familys and when a new root method is found it will be posted In the htc evo forums everywhere

talk about heated.... So now I have 2.3.3 on my phone.... I was so loving CM7 Mod and just had it going perfect last night.
I thought HTC was going to leave the Hboot alone? I feel alone and naked in a dark forest without my CM7...... Please help me

maybe a good ol developer donation fund will jump start and motivate the process..NOT THAT IM IMPATIENT OR ANYTHING! lol
but think about it...if all the folks that are OTA locked even donated $5-10 dollars (chump change) that still seems a good amount for something you were going to do anyway! its like somebody paying you to take a deep breathe after a race, or swallowing after you chew you food; you were going to get to it anyway!
