Hardware buttons starting to fail?? - Desire General

I've been noticing recently that my hardware buttons have been acting up, sometimes it dosent respond or sometimes it registers two presses. My contracts up next April so not in warranty but have insurance. I'm using rcmix s, could it be a rom bug or is my desires hardware buttons malfunctioning

In my case, I have had problem with back and home keys when the phone gets heated. Tried other roms and even unrooting but didn't work. After replacing mainboard it goes well.

If your in the uk your warranty is 2 years.

I notice the same behavior with my hardware buttons. I Bought my HTC Desire in April 2010.
I first thought it was software related, but after flashing different roms with full wipe the problem still exits.
Here in Germany the warranty is 2 years, so I think I will send it to repair soon.

If I send it back for repair would they repair the buttons and send me back the same phone? I'm not keen to have mine replaced with an SLCD screen.

I'll leave it until my summer holidays and then return my phone, in the meanwhile I'll try some different roms, I think it might have been because I took my invisishield off and then dropped my phone face first but that was a week ago it only started acting up yesterday

my "menu" button is partly dead, it sometimes works and sometimes dont, i just have to push little bit harder :/

Hi,
Search on ebay for
HTC Desire Optical trackball and keypad membrane,
Buy it.
Search for HTC Desire repairs on ebay and watch the guide for taking your Desire to bits.
Take a deep breath and get your tools out and fit the new bit.
Phone back to like when it was new.
Job done!

My volume down button is a pain to use, but if I get it right it still works. All the other buttons are ok but the menu and back buttons have lost some coating to them.

Same problem here. I've had mine for about 15 months. I just upgraded to a Sensation, but I'd love to keep that around as a spare phone.
I wonder if it's a "user-fixable" problem...

Hey there Tes (remember you were one of the earliest Desire users on this board)!
I'm also concerned about sending back my beautiful AMOLED desire and getting an SLCD pig back. The other concern is rootability, can the new Desires be easily rooted?

Bump it.Same problem, buttons are failing.

two week ago this problem started on my phone. The home button isnt working very good anymore. and the volume down is buggy to. Is it possible to be an software issue? or is this always a hardware fault?

Always a hardware fault

Weird, same thing happened to me two weeks ago. Home button and back button fail to respond at times. Thought was a ROM issue ( using insert coin ). Got my phone in April 2010, was the life expectancy of the hardware buttons 15 months ?

I wouldn't bet on it, even with a written notice they will somewhat change the LCD.

My volume down button has been dodgy since I got the phone, and recently my home button has become rather temperamental. I've not once thought it was a software problem though, its obviously hardware.
Most of us here use these phones day in day out relentlessly, so obviously the buttons aren't going to be as responsive as we would like!
Its a huge inconvenience though
Dan.
Swyped from my Oxygenated HTC Desire

The 'volume-down'-button started to fail about a month ago. It worked, but often I had to press it twice before it did something. About a week ago it got even worse, and the 'volume-up'-button also fails now!
I sent it for repair three days ago, they said it will take between 3 and 5 weeks

my volume down button started slacking badly, it responded to every third press or to really hard ones...
I removed root and s-off via ruu, sent it on guaranty repair, and got it back 10 days later. its working fine now, paper said they replaced "flex grid".
there is a rule in my country that if they dont repair it in 15 days they have to give you new device, so check your local laws and guaranty papers.
cheers

[Q] Soft Keys unresponsive

Hello everyone,
here's my problem.
After 7 days of normal usage (apart from poor battery life and some slightly annoying screen flickering issues) all 3 soft keys suddenly stopped being responsive. The backlight is still working though. Factory reset sorted no effect. As you may imagine, using the phone has become a real pain.
I have contacted HTC and I am currently waiting for their reply.
I just need to keep my hands away from trying to disassemble and see what went wrong
I was just wondering if anyone has got a similar problem.
Thanks
I have the same problem
I still wait replay from htc
Same happened to me. Tried a reset, boot loader relock, and a factory restore. Nothing helped. Mine was returned to phonehouse.fr, should have a replacement in 10 days.
Disappointed to say the least.

I had the same problem with mine. not only did the softkeys not work but if you dragged the notifications bar down you could not push it back up
I sent the phone back to the store and they gave me a replacement which is working brilliantly!
apparently it happens because ICS is not designed for softkeys only...at least that's what a developer told me
I too have same issue as from day 1, hv contacted my operator and now waiting for replacement (applied hard reset both via settings and also from boot menu, no success)

Screen problem?

Hi there, lately I got a strange issue:
Sometimes my screen vould go unresponsive, the phone vibrates twice and It will show the recent apps. The capacitive buttons from the bortom do not work either. Wherever I touch the sxreen the recenr apps list would dissapear, if I touch rhe screen again, they reappear, but otherwise rhe screen is unresponsive. I can switch the phone off, then back on, and also unlock the screen, but then it becomes uresponsive again. This is happening randomly, for intane right now my phone works great. This was hapening on Andromadus audacity b 5 and alsi on sensewich b 7. Anyone else experiencing this or has a solution? Rhanks in advance.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
I'm experiencing similar issues on mimicry. Specifically my capacitative buttons are giving me a headache. I'm currently on elite mod with ics touch buttons enabled for safety. Haven't faced the capacitative buttons issue yet since 2days but my entire screen stopped responding to touch(tested with keyboard to make sure the phone didn't hang) randomly...
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
The phone isn't hanging, on sensewich beta 7 when I press the trackpad I get the mouse pointer wich I can move, just the touchscreen and the capacitive buttons are playing crazy. It is also very hard to replicate the issue, so sendig the phone in for repair wouldn't do much good, because there is a good chance for it to behave normally...
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using Tapatalk 2
Same with me dude. I'm able to use the menu button on the keypad to confirm that the phone didn't hang. At times there are only random areas of the screen which won't repond to touch. Guys please help us confirm as to whether this is a hardware or software issue..
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Edit: Flashed EliteMod CM7 only to find out that this issue remains to persist. Looks like i'll have to get it repaired.
I am very curious how you would replicate the issue for the service tech. If you just send it in, most probably they would send it back to you saying it's all good. If you do send it for repair, please update this post with the findings.
Thanks,

Hey i returned my phone to stock froyo 1.34 with s-on.. First day capacitative buttons started working. Second day the non functional horzontal strip in the middle of my screen started working. I'll stay on this stock for a week to test my screen thoroughly and then decide whether its a software issue or hardware. By the way i actually opened up the phone to every part and then put it back together, maybe this is what helped me.

Unfortunately not, I set the governor on performance, but to no avail. I have no idea what's causing it, as it is very random. And it happened to me on both andromadus and sensewich roms, so I doubt it is rom related. I am just too lazy to return to stock and see if the problem persists...

I see that lately a lot of "screen not working" issues appeared. Could it be kernel or ICS related?
Anyone sent it in for repair and already got it back. What was fixed?

Whether I'm on froyo stock or gingerbread stock my capacitative buttons aren't working. Even parts of the screen take random inputs without my interaction. Areas which have the issue respond perfertly to my touch on the lockscreen(lockscreen always works perfectly). I'm giving my dz for service tomorrow. Let's hope. It gets fixed.

Hi,
I'm facing a similar issue ever since I rooted my device. The touch screen behaves strangely at times (becoming totally unresponsive in morning when I use it after around 6 hours of inactivity), the hardware buttons don't respond either. I keep on rebooting the devices, fixing the permissions etc. and then after some time, life comes back to the touch screen and the buttons. They also become unresponsive at random and it is very irritating when you pull your device to call someone or receive a call and then it does not respond .
Also there is a horizontal strip in the touchscreen that doesn't resister any touch (I cannot play 'Frontline Commando' due to this). Strawmetal! is your device still behaving properly after all the fixes you did? Have you reverted to ICS yet and found the phone working properly? This issue is draining all the charm of having a rooted mobile away :crying:
I do not think rooting is the problem here. My phone was rooted and my problem started only a few weeks ago after my son dropped it on the kitchen tiles... Now I reverted to GB stock and this moening I had the freeze once or twice. However, I don't need to restart the phone, power button does the trick for me. All I do is switch off and back on. And the screen and capacitive buttons are responsive again
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
Hi Regius,
I agree rooting may not be the problem but there are chances, though slim, the roms we are using they have some problem. In my case, I have another probable culprit: I was caught in heavy rain. Though I protected my device but I doubt that some moisture seeped in. I rooted it after that so cannot say clearly what is behind the issue. Since I saw that Strawmetal is also facing similar issue, I made a wild guess. Now I'm trying to muster enough courage to dismantle the device and reassemble it. I can also notice a small smudge inside the screen at the top-right corner (perhaps this is a proof that moisture seeped in).
Coincidentally, I used Strawmetal's directions for rooting that he has put at one place. Wonderful effort on his part.

One more issue that I forgot to mention: I cannot pull down the notification bar directly (as we did in gingerbread) but have to manage it via launcher settings. I remember this issue got corrected occasionally when I used sense based roms initially.

Well guys returning to stock seemed to work for an hour. But then it started all over again. So fearing i would lose all control of the capacitative buttons i rooted back and am using Elitemod with the on screen buttons enabled. My capacitative buttons have comepletely gone out( no amount of reboots, kernels would fix it). So 2 weeks ago i took it to a htc service center. Heads up*(I'm living in a metropolitan city). The guy there says that they are not *authorized* to open the hardware of the phone. They only look into the *software issues* which I guess is just flashing an RUU (F*** you HTC). He says they haven't received replacement parts for many phones since 3 months and he recommended me to leave my phone with him so that he could contact me when and if the parts arrive(facepalm). I quietly walked out and went to another service center where they told me the same thing, but that they would send my phone out of the country and I would have to pay $30 for the shipping whether or not my phone is fixed. Charges for repairs would be extra. So all I did was hit up ebay and ordered a digitizer for $40 on August 1st. I got shipped by the seller today. I'll be receiving it by 24th of this month.
In the meanwhile I needed a rock solid phone for my regular use and I knew that if I got an android, it would mostly remain in the recovery mode. So I got myself a Nokia E6($370). This is giving me 6 days of battery backup on heavy usage. Standby is rated at 30 days( I guess it'll give me 20).
Let's hope that I get a working digitizer from that seller and it will fix the issue on my beloved DZ.
Finally HTC go dig your own A**!!
EDIT: Before all these problems started my phone slipped from my lap and slid across the floor without taking a single scratch. This drop might have been the cause.
Hi Strawmetal,
Just one more check: install a sense based rom (4.0 would be better as they are not as heavy as 3.5) and see if the buttons respond! Just a gimmik but I realise by device responds better when one a sense rom.
And HTC is dying its death...they are closing business in some countries, shares are falling

Touch Screen Problem on HTC Desire Z

Hi All
For the last couple of months my desire has had an intermittent problem with the touch screen. All of a sudden it decides you're trying to pull down the "notifications" screen when you're just touching the touch screen, sometimes it also decides you're trying to hold and drag when you're just tapping the screen, sometimes it simply stops responding. These problems are usually solved by tapping the top button and putting the phone on standby then tapping it again and waking it up - although sometimes it then won't let you drag down the screen unlock until you repeat the on/off standby procedure a couple of times. The problem varies on connecting my phone to my computer.
Given that in between these instances the touch screen works as normal I'm guessing it shouldn't be a hardware issue, but the intervals between these problems appear to be getting shorter (either that or I'm just getting more annoyed by it recently). I've had a quick search of the forums and haven't immediately found anyone having this precise problem. Is it likely a question of trying factory reset and if that fails sending it for repair?
Thanks in advance

Its definitely not software. I've tried froyo, gb stock with s-on and no root. I've been on ics roms cm7 roms but this problem occurs on all. I'm giving mine for service today.

Well since the OP didn't respond here's my suggestions. If you think it's software then just flash to a stock rom. You should find a number of them lying around the forums, and instructions on how to flash. This will mean your phone is unrooted and will need to be rooted, as well as taking care of installing a recovery and etc. This should correct anything wrong with the software.
Otherwise you busted the digitizer, which is actually very cheap to buy on Ebay. You will have to take the phone apart which can be time consuming.

Thanks for the quick response. Before coming here, I had a mobile service shop take a look at my handset and he had mentioned that for HTC desire z, the "touch screen" comes with the "display" attached to it. Did he meant the digitizer only or (digitzer + LCD screen) or he was simply trying to rip me off ?
I am very sure that there is nothing wrong with the display on my handset, its only the touch functionality that is not working properly.
Which one of the following do I need to search on EBay?
gultek.eu/htc-spare-parts/digitizer-touchpad/desire-z.html
or gultek.eu/genuine-parts/lcd-modules/htc/desire-z-hd3.html
or both?
Thanks again in advance !!
You need just the digitizer, if you're doing it yourself it takes about an hour if you've never done it before, don't buy the lcd if you don't see a flaw in it.
Some people sell the whole front chasis with lcd, digitizer, front bezel all connected for ease of replacement. May be easier but you will only shave of 30min tops and spend 3x as much

yeah this happens to my G2 a lot. I got my phone fixed a while back (2-3 months ago) becuase the colors on my screen were screwed up and the ear piece was broken. i took it in and he replaced a couple of cables. it worked fine but now sometimes the screen is just having a straight up seizure. it flips through pages so fast and it goes from page 1-2 and back and forth and then the virtual keyboard presses multiple keys and just its crazy. i feel like the guy that fixed my phone didnt plug in a cable all the way. but yeah thats my problem. i dropped my phone the other day and ever since my phone hasn't gone into a seizure lol
Hi, did you solve your problem? I have the same with my desire Z. It click alone in several place on my screen.
And I ask me if the problem don't come from the lcd digitizer control instead of the touch screen digitizer

Yes replacing the digitizer did fix my problem. And a year later the replaced digitizer started giving problems. So I ordered 2 extra digitizers off ebay. Both of them turned out to be duds. Surprisingly the second digitizer(which I replaced a year ago) fixed itself.
I think Im having the same problem,
bottom part of screen (including the home, menu, back, search buttons) aren't functioning half the time,
is there any service manual, or link to information as to what I need to tear apart on my DZ?
should this be enough? EBAYLINK
what do I need to replace the digitizer?

[Q] Will my phone be replaced?

I bought a One X about a month ago. Brand new and unbranded. I started having issues with it. First was Audio Stutter, i contacted HTC support and they told me to clear cache through the recovery. This didn't work. The only way to fix this was to restart the phone with the headphones plugged in. Secondly the Vibrator started making a clicking noise every time i typed with the keyboard or used the capacitive keys. And now while charging my phone i started to notice yellow spots appear at the bottom of the screen (Which is a known issue with these devices) but disappeared after a while when i removed it from charging. This might be because the phone gets VERY HOT when its charging. I replaced the charger but i still had these issues. I contacted HTC and booked my phone in for repair. I'm just wondering whether they will give me a new phone or attempt to repair it.
Hi,
if it's within 30 days of purchase the seller should offer a replacement. If not they will more than likely say they'll repair it - like you said.
I've had no end of problems with mine recently, but HTC kept repairing it - which is fine by me. The one x I am using now is a replacement as the previous one kept breaking.
So I guess it comes down to HTC, it'll be there decision. But they'll normally try to repair it at least once before replacing.
Cheers

I have a feeling they might replace it. To fix the audio stutter they might have to replace the Main board and to fix the screen they will have to replace everything. Won't it not be cheaper and less time consuming to send me a new one instead. The thing i hate most is getting a phone back after it has been repaired and it does not feel the same anymore..doesn't feel new.

It just depends on HTC. I had mine repaired twice and now on my second replacement device (which is perfect - touch wood). I first suffered with Wifi - then it got repaired, but came back with a loose camera, yellow spots on the screen, broken vibration and overheating. So they offered to replace the device because it was brought back within 30days (more like they made the problems worse). So they gave me a new one - but that was faulty as it had a yellow tint to the screen, so they replaced it again because i brought it back within a week.
I know what you mean by it not feeling the same after it has been repaired - but to be honest i really couldn't tell a difference, normally i can.
They will more than likely offer to repair it, as its a lot cheaper than HTC giving you a brand new phone. At least you can get a repair and its not voided for a particular reason.
Cheers.
I just got off the phone to HTC regarding my Phones repair status and what they did to fix it. I initially sent my phone in for repair Because of Audio Crackling, Vibration motor fault when using softkeys or keyboard and Yellow spots on the screen when i charge the phone. NOW they are telling me they perfomed tests on the phone and found a WiFi problem(Which i never had a problem with) and they have fixed it and have shipped the phone to me. What Pisses me off is the fact that I'm getting my phone back with the exact same problems. I asked them why was the problem description not followed and they said they had a bug in their system so they did not know what the problem was when i clearly sent a copy of the paperwork that was emailed to me when i booked the phone for repair. It clearly states on the 'Problem Described:' section on the paperwork that i the above three problems. Has this ever happened to anyone?
I brought mine from Carphone Warehouse so my phones are always sent to there repair center. But I must say I've heard many complaints about HTCs repair service.

HOX Screen broken? GPU or software?

Good day guys,
I've read a number of threads on this forum about HOX screen problems and never quite had any until a couple of days ago.
All of a sudden I started getting yellow and pink pixels all over my screen. I thought that this was just a software issue in the beginning so I rooted, formated, installed a custom rom, and no luck, still have the same problem with the screen.
There is a number of interesting facts about this problem:
1) I have this when I restart the phone, in the boot menu, in the clockwork recovery, you can see the edge of the pixels being pink or some other random color.
2) When I press down hard enough around the volume+ area the problem seems to go away.
I wonder where this is the GPU dying on me, or perhaps this has to do with the connectors that run to the screen?
The phone never fell, or had any major damage, I did have it in my pocket all the time and when sitting down I guess that could stress the exterior of the phone.
Here are the pics:

I really do wonder if I can get it back for warranty now, since its rooted, since this is obviously a hardware problem rather than software.
There is only one way to find out. They might repair it for free if you ask nicely enough.
