Hi All,
Just a quick one - I'm not able to use the built in browser to open https websites. Normal websites work fine.
Wasn't trying anything in specific, even Microsoft (https) didn't work!
Is this unsupported, or do I need to change an option to make it work?
Cheers,
Raa.

Are you sure it's not your carrier? You can even Microsoft didn't work, you mean HTTPS doesn't work in WinMo? I'm able to browse HTTPS sites no problem, but my carrier provides an open internet cxn.
Works fine in WinMo, so it's not carrier related. If yours works, its probably something else then, but thanks for the heads up.
Not using any special browser or anything?

Any particular websites you're having issues with?

does anybody think that opera made opera mini & 10 final because they are starting to develop a browser for wp7? or is this all just a big coincidence that they did the day after MIX or maybe they have giving up on windows phones & are just gonna focus on android??

im not so sure i believe that there wont be other browsers, why else would they say that they have no problems with other browsers on the platform just to not allow it or to force them to use the IE engine (wouldnt they need native code or special access to even do that?)
is it possible to get flash working without native code? cuz if not then that shows that they are willing to let it be used i think there will be opera on wp7 & im not talking about that mini crap
Why wouldn't they say they have no problems with alternative browsers? Sure they are nice unlike Apple, you can make any application you want... as long as it's done in SL/XNA.
And of course they do their own stuff in C++, they're not crazy.
As regards Flash, yes, that will be done in C++ as well, no doubt about it. But that adds value to their IE, while Opera is another matter. We'll see. So far they said specifically that SL/XNA is "the whole developer story".
Opera is going to be an option on WP7, but it can never be the default browser.

at the same time options with different browsers add value to wp7 & unless that new IE is better & faster then safari then they will need it
No because alternative browsers may easily have Google as default search engine.

IE on the pc can have google as the default search engine & even if the bowsers have it also you still wont be able to set google as the search button so people will still be using bing at the end of the day anyway

Opera Mini doesn't run natively.
Yeah, but it's also not a browser really.
Microsoft never said that they wouldn't allow apps that competed with app that come with the platform. They said that It just can't be the default app. If you open a link in a outlook mail or you text message it will automatically go to the IE browser. But your allowed to use alternative browsers.

It's not that simple. Opera's income from the mobile market segment does not come directly from the end users (it's free, remember?). They deal with manufacturers and network operators to get their browsers integrated with their software. Microsoft have announced that OEM partners will be allowed to run native code so this COULD mean that Opera could be bundled with some phones if Microsoft sees it fitting. I doubt it though.

It's latest WM version is native, there's nothing that prevents it from being made in C# or whatever - it's not a browser anyway, as it doesn't include a rendering engine, just a UI client for a cloud service.

Previously, yes. However, there is now is a native Opera Mini for WM. Of course, it's still using pre-rendering on Opera's servers.
Since iphone has such a huge market share, wont the anti-trust laws apply to Apple for not allowing any other browser other than safari??????
There will be Opera for WP7S. Microsoft has already said they will allow 3rd party browsers.
Flash has to be native code, and Microsoft has already siginaled there will be exceptions to allow native code. It is just they prefer you to do it with Silverlight or XNA if you can, and probably won't allow you unless contact them first with a reason.

By the way, I don't see why this restriction of making alternative default applications is often dismissed as minor. How are you going to use Opera really if it can't be launched from other apps by clicking links, without copy/paste, no access to filesystem and without the ability to access IE bookmarks even? It'll pretty much be limited to entering URLs manually or using whatever built-in bookmarks/cloud storage they ship with. While technically and legally this is indeed "allowing third party browsers", realistically it's very close to "you can't use anything but IE on WP7".
Engadet just posted how you can push links to android 2.2 running Froyo.
ONLY FOR ANDROID 2.2 FROYO
Full story:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/31/how-to-push-chrome-firefox-links-to-your-android-2-2-froyo-de/
1. download the Google Chrome to Phone Extension application here. Make sure Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources is checked if you're installing over USB
2. Download the latest version of the Chrome to Phone extension from the same page, or get the Firefox version here.
3. In your web browser of choice, log into your Google Account.
4. On your phone, start the Chrome to Phone application
5. In the app, add the Google Account you'd like to share with.
Click on "Register Device" to link your account to the Google Chrome to Phone service.
Finally, open up that web browser, find something you'd like to share, then click the new icon in the toolbar to beam it to your phone. Now you're cooking with fi--we mean, now you can continue your browsing sessions, share YouTube videos and get those Google Maps.
dose anyone think WOW i nead this feature?
i didt.. am i missing somthing?
using push means apps don't longer have to make a connection to the server in order to check for updates. Making updates doesn't come immediately (depends on the update interval) and draining the battery more. Pushing means that the server 'pushes' the changes to the apps when there's an update. So people will receive their updates immediately.

Yes you are.
Froyo brings the "cloud to device" functionality to 3rd party apps, essentially allowing application developers to use a lightweight "push" notification service rather than having to do their own thing.
Whilst this particular use of the service may not be of interest to you, I can assure you that this is going to be tremendously useful in the future once developers start getting to grips with it.

Dave

one simple example, you are in hurry to go to a company that you don't know where it is, so you just browse their website in your pc, find the location in google maps, and push it to your phone.
I know that we can do that also from the phone, but no matter how good a phone is, for now it is still easier to do that in a pc rather than in a phone.

maybe its just the way i use my phone, i would just pop the post code in google maps on the phone, or use the voice navigate to feature.
i understand cloud/push tech, and when we finally get Firefox on android with Firefox sync i can see me making use of tab syncing.
but the whole push a webpage to my phone - but i am sure there will be other great cloud/push apps.
the firefox extension link is broken - this is working from chrome though. Any idea what happened to the firefox extension?
I'm guessing the Firefox plugin is this one:

Very bloody useful if you ask me!
does anybody know if it also works the otherway around, so from phone to pc?
The only internet i have is from my Desire. I would like to upload a large file to some sort of site around 100MB worth.
I have tried most popular ones but they don't work form the phone. I have tried Dropbox but it seems there is no status bar of how much it has uploaded. I even left it going overnight and couldn't tell wether it was done or not!
Any ideas?
I have used estrongs file explorer (available free in marketplace) it has a built in FTP client and I've used it to upload large files (300Mb +) to company FTP site over 3G and WiFi in the past, it has a process indicator too...
EStrongs also has LAN browsing capability, so I can use it to playback mp3 stored on my NAS when at home
Hope this helps.
P
Would i not need my own webspace to do that though? I meant more for uploading a file to Megaupload/4shared/Rapidshare anything like that really?
Thanks for the reply though. Will be worth having it for other things!
Yes, it would only work if you had the FTP address for the location you were trying to upload to,
for file sharing sites, have you tried an alternative browser to default, I don't use any of those sites you mentioned, but for other things (managing world cup fantasy football team for example) I found that I could use some pages in dolphin HD that wouldn't work in the default browser, I'm not a big fan of dolphin because of the way it hijacks all of your default preferences even when you ask it not to, but it did allow me to use sites that otherwise would be unavailable

What about operamini?
I know you can upload files with that. Don't know about files that big. Give it a try.
Tried operamini no luck there. What site would i be able to use?
~100MB and below I've done with Dropbox using the Droidbox app.
It shows an icon in the notification bar and the current status when you scroll down (progress bar, successful/unsuccessful). This is a 63MB 3GP vid file I'm uploading using it right now: http://bit.ly/asyRYa

Hi there,
It is indeed a settings option
- open opera and type: opera:config
- scroll down to "user prefs"
- scroll all the way down to "UAProf URL Enabled" and uncheck that box
- scroll down a little more and save "user Prefs"
- restart opera
& you are set 2 go!

I wished that had worked for me. I've tried just about every fix listed on these forums, and the only way to get full sites on my tilt2 is to tag ?m=false onto every non mobile page I want to load. Engadget and CNN are the two I am always testing on.

hard luck bro, try iris browser or skyfire..
btw wat do u mean by ?m=false where to tag this to c complete website
I happen to be on the opposite end. I wish the browser will automatically detect if it has a mobile version but for some reason, my phone always loads just whatever I type on the url. In order for me to load the mobile version, I always have to add m.
Is there anyway that even if I type like engadget.com, it will load m.engadget.com. It's just easier instead of having to add that m.
I think the original rom always tries to load the mobile version because htc probably made change to the preference or code but the energy rom which has the updated stock opera will load the full version by default unless you add the m.

it tags onto the end of the site url after the "/" or after ".html"... but I just checked, it looks like whether or not is works is site specific. Works fine on Engadget (which is what I browse frequently) but not CNN.
I do use skyfire, but it just seems to me that it has been getting consistently slower in page loads/refreshes when scrolling and more prone to timeouts over the last year. I had thought updating from the older version would help, but it seems about the same.

Heyhey,
Has anyone notice the "touch.facebook.com" page has recently changed? It seems to be redirecting to "m.facebook.com".
According to this source (http://www.redmondpie.com/facebook-launches-new-unified-mobile-website/) Facebook have done it to make it easier for themselves, and it should automatically adjust based on your device.
Now, AFAIK, the Desire Z can do roughly everything. So does anyone know why I'm getting a fairly basic "m.facebook.com"? It misses out features such as being able to check in to places - something which the touch site did well.
I am aware there are apps - but I am generally not in good reception areas, Opera still operates quickly, whereas the apps just sit there.
So, is there a way to force my phone into tricking Facebook into providing me the decent version?
Regards,
Chris

is there a way to do this for opera? kinda miss the touch site too
On Opera, I have found that I have to go to "opera:config" and there is an option in there to change the useragent.
I've managed to get a site which looked similar to the touch.facebook.com. I suppose I just need to find the correct useragent to use to enable places again now.
Hey thanks for the heads up!

The "Places" functionality, and probably everything else you were looking for, is in the "More" dropdown. I use the new m.facebook.com to check in and do basically everything. It's a decent clone of the iPhone app.
Thanks for the reply.
I wish I had a "more" dropdown menu at the moment!
I did manage to get into the Places with one of the useragents I tried, but it didn't have the check-in option anywhere.
I really don't mind using the Facebook app, it is just a little slower, and misses out features such as event walls.
It's because Facebook plans on deprecating the touch site.
