Uploading big files with Desire - Desire General

The only internet i have is from my Desire. I would like to upload a large file to some sort of site around 100MB worth.
I have tried most popular ones but they don't work form the phone. I have tried Dropbox but it seems there is no status bar of how much it has uploaded. I even left it going overnight and couldn't tell wether it was done or not!
Any ideas?

I have used estrongs file explorer (available free in marketplace) it has a built in FTP client and I've used it to upload large files (300Mb +) to company FTP site over 3G and WiFi in the past, it has a process indicator too...
EStrongs also has LAN browsing capability, so I can use it to playback mp3 stored on my NAS when at home
Hope this helps.

Would i not need my own webspace to do that though? I meant more for uploading a file to Megaupload/4shared/Rapidshare anything like that really?
Thanks for the reply though. Will be worth having it for other things!

Yes, it would only work if you had the FTP address for the location you were trying to upload to,
for file sharing sites, have you tried an alternative browser to default, I don't use any of those sites you mentioned, but for other things (managing world cup fantasy football team for example) I found that I could use some pages in dolphin HD that wouldn't work in the default browser, I'm not a big fan of dolphin because of the way it hijacks all of your default preferences even when you ask it not to, but it did allow me to use sites that otherwise would be unavailable

From what i have seen it takes a bit of work to get it going. Would like to try it but maybe once we get a 1 click solution to use it.
I'll look into other browsers. Thanks.

What about operamini?
I know you can upload files with that. Don't know about files that big. Give it a try.

Tried operamini no luck there. What site would i be able to use?

~100MB and below I've done with Dropbox using the Droidbox app.
It shows an icon in the notification bar and the current status when you scroll down (progress bar, successful/unsuccessful). This is a 63MB 3GP vid file I'm uploading using it right now: http://bit.ly/asyRYa

Uploads Via Browser - Possible?

I have found myself looking for work and am using my Desire when and where I can to apply for jobs. However, one problem I am facing is that I cant upload my CV to job sites using my fone. I have put my CV on my memory card and was hoping that I could upload it like a PC. Instead, I just see "Uploads Disabled". Is there any app or anything I can do to enable Uploads?. I have changed the browser to "full internet", instead of "mobi" in the settings menu.

Try a different browser
Nope. Will be possible when (if) we get upgraded to Froyo.
It's in Froyo? thats great news. I like the default browser, but this is the one problem/issue I have with it. Cannot upload files on forums due to no system browser. I don't like the other browsers.
I came across the same dilemma a few days back. Sadly, there was no real fix and the only alternative currently was to use the Dropbox Android app (which doesn't work well and is very limited). It worked for me due to my focus being on multimedia. It doesn't handle text files and it doesn't allow a direct file upload through it to elsewhere. You do get the option to provide a direct download link to a file you uploaded though.

are there any news on this ???? is froyo bringing uploads to default apps????
I am running the Defrost rom on my Desire and I was able to upload a photo to my tumblr account using the web page form, so it seems it is working in Froyo.
try uploading something to rapidshare...like a zip file....if you can it's fixed then

Good tip .. now to find an innocent victim
Alternatively, install Firefox + Adblock addon. In fact I would say for the average user this could be even easier.
I like the out of the box thinking. I would not have thought to do that.

Adblock addon works only with Firefox...but hosts file works with any browser any software...
You could use privoxy which I found a while ago. Works pretty well. You just have to change the proxy settings of your browser.

Try using dropbox that's how I do it at least. It will let you upload pretty much whatever. You can get it in the market free!

I agree, Dropbox is great. I've been thinking of upgrading to a paid account when I get a little more money saved (I just went on an app buying/dev donation spree, so definitely over my online quota right now). I just found out the hard way that there's a 10 gig/day bandwidth limit for public links, but it's definitely a great site.
If you're talking about on xda, I haven't found a way to do it yet. Even with the user agent set to desktop, it won't work. I think this is because it doesn't integrate Android file explorers. You can always use Dropbox or another hosting site and link others to the file. With Dropbox, I just use the mobile app. Once you've uploaded whatever you want to share to your "Public" folder, long press the item, choose share, and then "copy a link". This will result in a direct download, which I prefer over other sites.
If you want extra space, sign up with my referral here:

EDIT: First link was wrong, so I fixed it. I believe you have to install Dropbox as well to get the extra space.
Thanks for your help...uploaded both live wp in the Themes and Apps section.

Downloading problem

Just wondered if this happens to anyone else, I cant download from any file share sites via my phone or any external link for that matter. I can only download from the market and attachments in forums.
Am I missing a setting somewhere or does this happen for everyone :-(
Same here, i cant seem to download from any fileservers except a few like megaupload. All the others give me a 'download unsuccesfull'. Anyone?
Are you guys using the stock browser ?
If yes, then try using a different browser to name few ( dolphin HD, Firefox, Opera)
If still doesn't work then make sure you have a astro file explorer or some sort of app like that which will recognize the files you download.
Hope this helps.
I use dolphin and set user agent to desktop, almost always works then.

I use stock so will give one of the others a bash cheers
Yeah this problem happens when using the browser that comes with the phone. So use another browser for downloading from file share sites. I use Opera browser.

apps to make your android phone more like a fully functional desktop

yeah so i was thinking, every now and then i need to go over to my computer to do something i cant do on my phone.. and i gotta say i really dont like that.. my phone is just as poweful as a computer so why cant it work like one? so heres what im gonna try, ill list some apps, and you list some apps, things to make the phone more fully functional! the goal is to never NEED to use your computer to complete a task you should be able to do on your phone.
Adobe Flash Player 11
yeah this ones a biggy, while its not as perfect as using a desktop, it comes pretty close, and with enough fuss you can usually get the job done
aDownloader
i used to use tTottent, but this is much better. a GREAT bittorrent client, with built in searches to thepiratebay, and other torrent sites
ZArchive
for all those times you download a .zip or .rar or otherwise compressed file, and feel stuck.. you downloaded a file, album, etc on the road, and now you wanna open it.. i used to use Root Explorer but sadly it lacks the ability to open files with passwords.. which comes up a lot, ZArchive is a very clean, simple archive manager with password protected archive support, it has a very simple yet attractive UI. and it just works.
Opera Mobile
honestly i prefer Dolphin HD and Dolphin Mini, but nothing works as smoothly as Opera Mobile, theres less hangups, less 'this should work but it isnt.." situations as you often face on mobile browsers.. and it even downloads from weird file uploading sites like 2shared, or zshared, uploaded, hotfile, etc when others simply fail to do so without corruption, or thinking its finished after downloading 128kb (issues ive faced with Dolphin)
AdFree Android
if you use Chrome or Firefox, you might run an adblocker, handy little tool, it also works on apps as well as browsers.
Root Explorer
gives you a fully functional fire manager, you can browse, relocate, copy, and delete any files inside android, this means your SD card, your system files, apps or even that camera shutter sound file
Download All Files
as well as things SHOULD go, they dont always go according to plan, files fail to download, some apps only offer the option to stream, or preview when what you really wanna do is download. this app helps you save things you wish you could but are prevented to
alrighty folks, thats all i can think of for now.. does anyone else have anything useful they can throw out there? or better solutions than the ones ive given? remember were looking for staples, not just
Hey,
All apps are really usefull !
But there is only one app which makes problems.
You wrote "zArchive" is it this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.zdevs.zarchiver&hl=de ?
Cause this one won't open password locked archives every time i try it
For the full desktop experience one app is a must .
BSOD app make you think you are on windows .
