I just got the best buy insurance plan last tuesday because my phone fell n i got chips on it >.>.
but than decided if i get a full body screen protector plus a case(case on the way from ebay =D) i dont think ill be needing the best buy one.
because it is 10$ a month... do you guys think its worth it.
btw is the zagg full max worth it because i am getting it for 12 dollars..
read my post here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741045&page=6
sorry i can't post links
Just think, if you keep your phone two years... $240 on insurance.
Half the cost of the phone.
It's almost ALWAYS a better investment to spend the $20 on a case and then pocket the $10/mo into your own personal "insurance fund".
True.. Because today im going to best buy n decide there.
Well wht about the att one.. How does it par even though it has deductibles

$125 deductible... $5 a month is half as much, so $120 over two years. $120+$125= $245
It's a wash but based on the fact the BB doesn't have deductibles it might be cheaper if you have to replace it twice.
But all in all, you can insure yourself to death, I vote just get a $20 case and call it good.

Also, BB warranties obviously only apply to BB purchased devices.

I bought my Captivate on a pricing error for $299.
Guess how much SquareTrade will cover? $299. If my device dies, they'll cut me a check for $299 because the retail $499 price is too expensive.
So check YOUR facts, please.
Let's also assume a $499 device had a $300 repair done to it. They devalue your coverage by that much, so now you've only got $199 left. So now let's say your device breaks completely. Well, you've only got $199 coverage left, they'll cut you a check for $199 and you're SOL on the rest.
Again, like I said earlier, they insure your money invested, not the device. So please stop talking out of your ass when you have no idea.
Insurance is always offered at a rate which would make the provider money. So no, you couldn't convince me that any phone insurance out there is "worth it."

CLOSE, but they don't cover the $299 because $499 is too expensive, moron, they cover it because THAT'S WHAT YOU PAID! You don't go to the dealership and buy a $40K car then tell your insurance company "well, it's worth $80K, but I got a good deal on it because of a pricing error" - sucks you couldn't buy it for $275 like everyone else who early upgraded
How do you think insurance works? Seriously, what the hell.....

Where are you getting this information from??? Here's how it REALLY works since you're just going to make up whatever the hell you want here..... I bought a $750 TyTN II and insured it for the full amount I paid. After a year and a half, my keyboard buttons started sticking - called them up, they said they could fix it in 5 days or refund my purchase price if they couldn't (the full $750!), just how it states on their website. They sent the phone back with the Tilt keyboard instead, and the buttons were in the wrong place, so I sent it back to fix it right or pay me the $750. They couldn't get the keyboard in the 5 days, so they sent me $750 back to my PayPal account!!!!!! Furthermore, since they screwed up, they also added in the purchase price of the warranty which they have NO problems doing (they refunded it back to me on a separate occasion too, but your little brain can't process that much info all at once). Directly from their website:
100% Parts & Labor Coverage with Zero Deductibles.
We pay you full item cost if item can't be fixed.
A $50 deductible applies on ADH-related claims for Cell Phones only.
Reimburse: For most items below $500, or it's going to take too long or is too expensive to fix, we'll pay you the replacement price of your item. We give you a free shipping label to make it easy to send in your item. Once you've shipped your item to our service depot, we will repair it within 3-5 days and then ship it back to you at no cost to you.

So WHERE do you get the fact that once they do a service (replace my keyboard) that they deduct the money involved in the service??? They cancel the warranty if your plan requires a refund of the purchase price of the device, but that has NOTHING to do with subtracting the amount of money spent in repairs........

How about their own terms?
Now maybe perhaps you can shut the hell up and go back to being ignorant.
Mechanical and electrical failures that occur during normal use of your item. Your item is covered for up to the full purchase price of your item (tax and shipping are excluded).

The total value of your warranty is in most cases equal to the purchase price of your item. For every valid claim filed against your item for which we provide repair services, the total value of your coverage is reduced by the cost of the repair services rendered. In the event a valid claim is filed with us and repair costs are estimated to exceed the current value of your warranty - the balance of your warranty value will be offered instead.

In the case of Squaretrade, you can always go up to the $599 device plan and they will pay for your $499 device if need be.
They have multiple tiers. I'm thinking of getting the middle tier for their smartphones and if I need to, and I'll pay the difference if it's above that amount to replace that phone.

Wrong.
What part of "Your item is covered for up to the full purchase price" do you not understand?
In the case of subsidy, the "full purchase price" will be the MSRP (which is shown on your receipt), but outside of that "full purchase price" is the amount paid.

I have no case and no insurance.... I will deal with things as they happen. I hate cases, and I find the cost of insurance to high; over the 2 year life of the phone contract I would be paying for a second phone (at subsidized rates).
No other products have such high insurance rates. You don't pay $20,000 in insurance fees over the loan period of a car (5 years) or even over the normal usage duration (10 years) of a car.
But small personal electronics are lost and dropped in toilets all the time (apparently) so the insurance companies have to be able to cover all these people and not go out of business.
The best strategy is to buy these things when they are 6 months old and get the By One Get One offer - then you have a backup.

Insurance at $144 or so covers $599 via their Premium Smartphone insurance. You paid $499 for the Captivate without subsidy. Last I checked, $499 is less than $599.
So you would be covered for $499 when/if the need arises.
ill try to be impartial answering this. yes its worth it. 240 over 2 years may be half the price of the phone, but thats still less than full price of the phone if you want to buy it outright after destroying it.
no deductible, no limit to claims. only thing my customers dislike is the wait time while it is out for service, an issue for most customers and not wanting to put money down on a loaner phone. shouldnt be an issue with the common XDA forum poster...we all have tons of phones lying around we can use in the meantime.
i get a wicked good discount on phones through work and I dont pay any cell bills and i have the 4 major carriers. and i still get the Black tie protection on all my phones
I have the best buy insurance as well and I chipped my phone, think I can get a new one? Ha.

That is INCORRECT there are NO FREE warranty exchanges they are either a $5 service charge or a $20 service charge. It is $5 if you have Premium Handset Protection (PHP) on your phone line. If you do not have Premium Handset Protection then it will be $20. There are few exceptions to this rule. If you are outside your 14 day return/exchange period then and you opted out of the PHP then you are stuck with that $20 service charge and will have ground shipping instead of Next Day Air which Premium Handset Protection customers receive. The $5 OR $20 is billed to your account.
Is this new? Its always been free ground shipping and they could overnight it for $10-$20 for as long as i can think. I worked for tmobile (albeit it was 3 years ago and it could have changed). I never have heard of a $20 fee to exchange it. was this a corporate store or a third party dealer?
This was when I called 611. I asked them if I could just do it at the tmobile store and the agent on the phone told me they wouldn't exchange it and that I had to do it via the phone I dont' want to pay $20 for a new or like new phone and find out it doesn't change a thing, especially if it is just a "like new" phone.
Wait wait. Since when did they start charging that. I exchanged phones a few months ago and it was free not counting shipping. They would never exchange before if you were out of warranty.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Its been like that for almost a year now. 20 dollars if you don't have any insurance or warranty or 5 dollars if you do. If you do have INS that 5 dollars gets you next day air shipping.

I think then this is for online thing....coz if you buy in store and exchange with in 14 days, there is no charge unless you opt for another phone (then u pay $50 restocking). Coz when i exchanged mine, the waived the $50 restocking and there was no charge.
Here's a screenshot of my Tmobile phone bill from August. I had to do a warranty exchange for my 8 month old G2, I have the handset protection/warranty so I was charged $5 for the exchange which included overnight shipping.
This is for exchanges made BEYOND the initial 14 (or 30 in Cali) day return period.
Thats crazy. Seems they are finally coming down on all thhe warranty exchanges . So many people bricking their phones?

no, that is only for online orders, from what i can see above
I hope not, because I buy my phones from the retail stores. My wife has the mt4g and has exchanged it since last year when she got it,as a WARRANTY exchange and at MOST she only had to pay 4 or 5$ for shipping. If you have insurance I believe your express shipping is waived, but regular warranty exchanges over the phone for store purchases, are free. This ends until the end of warranty or your situation does not meet warranty exchange standards: water damage, out of warranty, root, major damage. Then that goes through Asurion which you will have to call and pay a deductible to get an exchange. I used to work there about a year and a half ago. I never did telesales/online sales, so this is new.

When I did a warranty exchange on my Sensation for dust under the screen, they didn't charge me a dime. I chatted online and told them I wanted to do a warranty exchange. They sent me the replacement device free, and I shipped my defective device using the prepaid shipping label. No charge at all.
I did a warranty exchange in store and they charged me.

This is CORRECT unfortunately, whether you bought it at the store or online there is a warranty exchange fee. From what the rep told me it started around June.
If you are still within your 14 days then it's free, but after that it's $5 or $20 depending on insurance.
If you get a nice rep he might waive the fee, but make sure he notes that or you will see it on your bill after he said it was waived. Trust me, it's happened to me and since he didn't notated it then I had to pay the $20.
This phone is a BEAST!

It doesn't have anything to do with it being on-line or not. There WILL BE a $50 restocking fee on all DEVICE RETURNS OR EXCHANGES no matter if you return/exchange withing 1 day or if you return/exchange within 14 days unless the manager of the store waives it for you. It's automatically populated in the computer system whenever there is a device return.
WARRANTY EXCHANGES done while the device is still under warranty will have either a $5 shipping fee or a $20 shipping fee billed to the account. We do not do the actual warranty exchanges within the stores we just process the order and the new device is shipped to your home address.

Guys-I did search and threads discussed problems using the Geek Squad Insurance. I just purchased LGOG new from ebay. The Smart Guard Insurance is offered from Geek Squad. Is this different from BB Black Tie Insurance and is it worth it? I currently put TEP on the phone. This was link in email sent to me:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/130766846273?_trkparms=clkid=5361607250115862204&_qi=RTM1269036
I know the turn around time is likely slower than TEP but is much cheaper. Is this a case of you get what you pay for?
Thanks guys,

Yes my wife works for best buy and we have this insurance instead of sprints. So much better. Only pay a 10 dollar deductible and they ship you a new phone. Usually a day or two but with optimus being so new they said it could be up to a week and a half. My sister who has an LGOG too shattered hers somehow and best buy replaced it super quick.
Im pretty sure you have to go to an actual store to because they had to check out and make sure they wanted to insure the phone before we could just sign up.

If I ever use the insurance I will post my experience. Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I bought the phone new from ebay seller. Ebay geek squad insurance sent me the email offering the insurance. When I activated the phone on Sprint's website the TEP that was on my prior phone was automatically put on the new phone. After getting the email offering the insurance offered by Geek Squad I contacted them asking if would cover the phone and was told to provide the phone details which I did. The insurance was then registered for the phone.
Ok, I'm trying to weigh my options here. I have unlimited data and have no plan on ending that until they force me to. I have looked around and have found that a new HTC One still tends to go for around $500-550.
However, Verizon's ETF is $350, and now that the One can be had on contract for $50, it seems to me I could have the phone and only be out $400.
I actually ran this plan by a Best Buy employee as well to see if they could warn me of any pitfalls, and the guy said there would be no problem. But, I seem to find you guys know more than the guys at Best Buy or Verizon! So, here's what I had in mind...:
- Start a NEW LINE of service, not at all linked to my existing account, get whatever cheapest plan they have, and get the One for $50
- Wait out the 14 days "worry free" period, so that I am past the point where they would just want me to return the phone
- Cancel the service, pay the $350 ETF (plus a possible pro-rate for the half-month of service?)
- Profit!
Are there any catches? Any pitfalls? ANY way that I can screw myself over by doing this? Also, at what point can I switch the SIM card from my current phone over to the new phone? Right away or do I have to wait til I cancel the service? Do I need to do anything on the Verizon website as well? I have bought a phone outright for my wife and just switched the SIM and it worked fine.

Ok so as far as you know, what is the cut off where they can no longer ask me to return the phone, but will not charge me the full retail price of the phone either? After conversing with the Best Buy guy, he said this cut off is 14 days, after which they will not allow me to return the phone, and would only charge me the ETF, not the full price of the phone. NOT TRUE. I just opened up a new account to get the phone for $149. It was my only choice since I have a concession account and Verizon would not sell me the phone unless they could attach it to a consumer account and I wasn't about to pay $699 at Best Buy. I cancelled the next day over the phone. The rep told me I was within my window to return the phone. I told him that I wanted to keep it and he said that was absolutely fine. Got my final bill about 2 weeks later and was charged $350 ETF, 1 day service $3.50, and $11.48 in taxes. They tried to charge me tax on the Activation fee which they eventually reversed since the account was cancelled within the first 3 days. In the end I paid a total of $565. The cheapest retail is at a VZW corporate store at $599. I was satisified.

great info here, thank you. This is right in line with what I was expecting. Based on your experience, and the fact that the phone is now $50 on contract, I would say $465 is probably a good ballpark figure for what I should expect my total out of pocket cost to be for the phone.

If that is what they told you, that is complete bull****. That's a bs line that INDIRECT stores tell their customers. I know this because I was a store manager for one. The indirect retailers get paid when you buy a phone. When that phone/line is canceled a DAY before 6 months in term, they get their money taken back from them. Any new line or upgrade needs to be active for a complete 6 months before they are free and clear of returns and chargebacks. You tell them to shove it and call their bluff...Corporate Verizon should have NO problem doing this, I've seen it done. Hell....I've done it, but do it at your own risk because I don't work for corporate and never have, so idk what kind of guidelines they have about these types of things...
EDIT*** I thought you said the store TOLD you that, I misread. You WORKED for Verizon? Was it corporate or indirect? I've done this before, and have helped friends do it as well and there were no issues....

great info here, thank you. This is right in line with what I was expecting. Based on your experience, and the fact that the phone is now $50 on contract, I would say $465 is probably a good ballpark figure for what I should expect my total out of pocket cost to be for the phone.

Sounds right. I picked mine up from the same store that refused to sell the phone to me. I placed the order online and chose in store pickup. Phone was ready within an hour..

Pay full retail or do the 12 monthly payments split on your bill.

Ok, to play devil's advocate here.
1. Don't do it at an indirect. Best buy may be ok because they're large, and probably wouldn't notice/care enough to come after you with a chargeback. At my indirect you sign a separate contract saying if you cancel within 6 months, we will bill you full retail on the phone or you must return it to us.
2. If you cancel within the first 14 days, YES, corporate can bill your account full retail on the phone. Most carriers have a "gaming" department that handles cases like these.
(Source: I used to work in a gaming dept. Charged a guy full retail on 10 blackberry bolds )
3. You'll have the cost at the POS, a $35 activation fee, half a month of service, and the ETF. Just be aware of all of these.
4. When you call in to cancel DO NOT say it was lost/stolen. Don't want your ESN getting flagged
Wondering what their return policy is? Also how long can I hold on to my trade in? If Samsung can't fix the supposedly sht camera during the return period, I will be doing a return.
15 days to ship the trade in.
30 days for returns of you bought with credit/debit card.
14 days for returns if you bought with Samsung credit/upgrade programs.
Either case 15% restock fee.

They're going to keep $240 on a $1599 purchase? Ouch!
$35-$50 carrier assessed restock fees are a bargain in comparison!

Guess so, though I'm sure there are ways around it.
"What is your return policy?
Please note that you may be charged a 15% Restocking Fee for non-defective returned items. The restocking fee does not apply to the GX-SM530CF Smart Media Player if it is returned within 30 days of purchase."

If you knew about the sht Cameras then why did you order the phone in the first place? You could have waited. Shrug

When you pre order the phone on day one, no one knew that there were camera issues. Shrug

Exactly! If Samsung charges me a 15% restock fee, I will be contacting my credit card for a dispute. If the camera really does suck, they should refund me 100%.

Your fine man.. if the camera is having issues they can't charge you a restocking fee. Just stick to your guns! Then like you said, you have your CC company for backup. If Samsung gives you a hard time I'd even say your CC company will back you up. I'm hoping they fix the issues and we don't need to worry about returning.
I've returned phone to them before and was not charged a restocking fee. It usually applies to opened accessories.

Same, I returned two Note10 +'s about a month apart for the camera with no fees. As long as it's in like new condition with all the accessories it should be fine.
Not sure why people are claiming 15% restocking fees, I also returned my note 10 without any fees

That's good, I want trying to post inaccurate info, but instead what I found from Samsung's own sure.
Good to know they don't have a restocking fee though, since I have 2 Ultras on the way and only really want 1 lol.
