Now that A4G revived its unloacked bootloder from leaked cods from Motorola upcoming gingerbread For the phone.Do you think those cods would be useful for our defy or is Motorola the only key to unlocking our bootloader

Heard the news too. The bootloader will be officially unlocked with Android Gingerbread release update. A probability for Defy if it gets Android Gingerbread.
Defy might not get gingerbread, but the defy+ (I think it is the cheaper rugged defy without water resistancy, just guessing though) probably will since there are gingerbread leaks for this device. Maybe, hopefully, a feature leak will have the option to unlock the bootloader. So even if the defy doesn't get gingerbread, the defy+ might, which roms work perfect on the defy, except for green lense defy's.

Just yesterday I was looking for a spare battery for Defy. Every shop I went to they told me Defy is too new to have a spare battery widely available for it yet. So why Defy all a sudden is too old to have Gingerbread? With the mess Motorola made with Froyo update it only feels right to give us the Gingerbread as an apology since Motorola is not good at making that in a written statement. Communication is not their strongest attribute.
Haha I agree and sure hope they will! I Wasn't saying defy is too old at all, I'm just not as optimistic about Motorola as you I guess because of all the let downs.
I was just saying that IF the defy doesn't get it we might be able to unlock via those leaked mb526 roms. There certainly is hope, because you're right about that they kinda owe us gingerbread after all the let downs and because the gingerbread roms of the mb526 works on the defy.
are you saying that we will can unlock the defy for free ??? without paying a code ??

It's for unlock bootloder not Operator
For the moment CG42.smg is crypted on all leaked Gingerbread so it's nor available for Defy now .
If you would like to see if it's ok with the next leaked ROM, use Motorola Android Depacker extract the files ans open with hex editor CG42.smg, if you can read text the bootloder is not crypted and if you can't the bootloader is crypted .ùùI don't know if the key that Motorola post work for Defy and i don't know how use it ^^
Is it anyhow possible to integrate the Atrix's CG42.smg in a sbf for defy?

Atrix has different hardware, doing this will probably brick Defy.
I heard the news but probably it's only for the Atrix. We will need to wait for a official ginger release for defy :-s

As you might have already read over the internet LG was behind the rumour that minimum hardware spec for Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread is 1GHz. I just read that LG pulls back the claim and considering updating their mobiles to Android 2.3.
This is a good time for us Motorola Defy owners to kindly request Motorola to reconsider their decision and give us Android 2.3 instead in 2011.
I'm sure Motorola people are monitoring this board so let them hear us loud and clear if you would also like your next Defy's release update to be Android 2.3. What do you think?
Thank you.
Yes, yes, yes, ........

Hehehe, yeah. Probably true.
Not Motorola's Fault
I would like to point out a rather complex issues in regards of what version of OS the phone gets released with, as well as the future upgrades. Motorola started development of the Defy long before Android 2.2 was released. And my guess when T-Mobile signed off on the phone it was tested by Motorola as well as T-Mobile with Android 2.1 only. From the product delivery point of view the fact that 2.2 came out while Defy was going through T-Mobile test cycle is irrelevant. Neither T-Mobile nor Motorola would've stopped the testing and go back to square one to change the OS to the latest and greatest version. Anybody who says otherwise has no clue on the way the product deliverable works.
Other point is that Motorola already may have a 2.2 or even 2.3 done for Defy but it has to go through the carrier's internal SI&T and QA process and get approved by T-Mobile. And if T-Mobile does not want to get Defy upgraded to 2.2 -- well guess what? No one will see the 2.2 running on Defy officially. Motorola cannot go over T-Mobile's head and release 2.2 to Defy customers without compromising the business relationship with the carrier.
Just my $0.02.
It would be incredible for now to develop a retail firmware wt Froyo. The 2.3 still a dream LOL
Seems like a no-brainer to us - but apparently manufacturers have zero interest in supporting their devices after managing to con people into buying them.
If it weren't for the Defy being so cheap, and ruggedized, I'd have bought an HTC without looking twice.
DEFY will coming soon with 2.2 in China(except for Hong Kong and China Taiwan) So I think 2.3 is possible.

You buy the device with a particular version of Android, the manufacturer doesn't have to give any upgrades, if they do its purely a bonus to the owner. IMO never buy a phone on the hope that it might get upgraded, and don't believe any dates published on the internet about when an upgrade is going to come - even if its from "official" sources.

I agree with you 100%. However, providing Motorola can fix the speaker phone issue soon enough then Defy would become their best selling handset. Over seventy pages of forum posts (by Germans) shows the level of demands for Defy.
I'm also sure Defy would eventually be their best new selling unlocked handset as well and I hope then Motorola cease the opportunity to do something good. Those with unlocked version of Defy are not at the mercy of any carriers.
Please people, as much as you like Motorola's Defy they also like your money too otherwise how Motorola can pay its directors crazy salaries? We can always encourage Motorola to do something good for us rather than acting as spokesperson of Motorola that nothing good will ever come out of Motorola in relation to its customers. First for everything! : )
Hi is this handset locked down similar to Motorola Milestone so custom ROMs are not possible? or is it hackable like the Motorola Droid.
Hi,
it does not look that good for the Defy, our only hope ist 2nd Stage Booting of a Custom Kernel ROM.
Or Motorola releases the Keys for their Bootloader (they never will).
Also theres a Official Release of Froyo at Q2 in 2011
Regards
You know what makes me laugh? People think they will skip 2.2 for 2.3, lololol, yeah it will be a LONG time before we get gingerbread unless some programmer gets lucky.
Well its a good thing I asked on here. I will stay away from this handset. It is well priced for the hardware and was tempting. Looks like HTC and Samsung are the way to go for hackability. Galaxy S line and Desire already have 3rd party gingerbread ports.

dunno if you want to mod your phone or not, because if you will, the defy is perfectly good for you, its still quite an impressive phone with cyanogenmod support, and if were lucky, we might even get the bootloader unlocked. but if we wont, and you are not willing to mod it, you will be stuck on froyo, because this little device wont even get gingerbread. so in this case i would consider a defy+. (hardwarewise they are almost the same, except that the defy+ comes only with bayer module (red lens), and the defy comes with bayer and soc (green). so the driver for the soc module is excluded from the defy+ roms, and it cant be changed until we get the unlocked bootloader). I will definitely root it mod it and install cm 7.1 within 10 days of buying. and i'm sure we will get bootloader unlocked and ICS one day (maybe in 2012). but after reading threads on xda forum i realized that the biggest problem here with defy is of the lenses. i know defy & defy+ are one and the same. but my question is how to detect lens color while buying the phone (in the shop)?????

unless you can unbox the phone, you cant tell. but if you can have a look at the device before you buy, just look at the lens. if its green, its an soc device. if its not (like red, yellow, or basically any other color ), than its a bayer device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116694
we wont get official ics for sure, but most probably we will get it through cm, even if the bootloader wont get unlocked, well just have to run it on a froyo kernel. but im almost sure if the defy+ gets unlocked (which seems likely, as its only out for 3 months), the defy can get unlocked too. keep your fingers crossed!

So I had a problem updating my phone via FOTA. Complained on the official Android forums, long story short (Longer version here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367054), someone from Motorola Support India called me up and asked me to visit the nearest service station for an update. I refused and asked him to give me the SBF. He did and asked me to RSDLite version > 5. When I asked him the details of the update he said it was ICS 4.1. I WAS VERY SURPRISED and I was sure that couldn't be the case. I flashed it anyways and found that it updated me from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6. However I received an email a few minutes later from him telling me that he had given me the wrong info. I called him up and asked him up the details. It is then he explained that there are a few BETA builds of ICS doing the rounds in internal development and that confused him. He confirmed that there was an ICS 4.1 build for the DEFY+ in testing and would get released maybe in the next 2-3 months but not sure to the exact date
So there's it ! Another ray of hope

Great news buddy!!! I too have a Defy+ and OTA updates were a prob! Not installing And when I called service center they told there are no OTA! :O Stupid outdated people! Nice to hear from you about the 2.3.6 update and ICS Btw i am desperately looking for an SBF! Could you please provide me with the SBF that you got? Coz I too am using an Indian retail Defy+ ..
Since motorola lied us about the unlocking bootloader, i haven't trusted motorola anymore until i see a real ICS sbf for Defy +.
no picture you said an JB!!!!
anything can happen in 3 months..they are liars..they may even make a plan to launch a new phone called defy++ or defy-- ..and hence making them stop to work on ICS on defy+...and in 3 months we will be so familiar with ICS that it will sound very old ..thanks to CM9...
If this is REAL, then the jobs for CM9 Defy would be very MORE SMOOTHER and MORE BUGFIXES.
Relying on confused information by confused people is always a bad idea.
I'll believe this when I see it, otherwise it's just a rehash of the "we'll unlock all our phones" story.
it is really a good news.
Still have many things to do.

seems like there is no ICS for Defy+ planned by Motorola
"4. Release the upgrade
We are planning on upgrading as many of our phones as possible. The ability to offer the upgrade depends on a number of factors including the hardware/device capabilities, the underlying chipset software support, the ICS support and then the ability to support the Motorola value add software.
To recap our earlier post, we are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Motorola RAZR™, Motorola XOOM™ (including Family Edition) and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will provide more precise guidance on timing after post-public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google, as well as any possible additions to this list of devices: As always, please refer to the Motorola Android Software Upgrade News page for the latest information."

i doubt... because defy/defy+ have hardware defasive
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-jelly-bean-upgrades/
somehow I feel "all" will not include our beloved Defy ^^
But still, sounds good to me... let's see which devices they'll really upgrade in the end.
wait and see
All possible devices. That might not include very old devices like Milestone because it's hardware is too old for JB. But let's hope it comes to Defy as well. Because our hardware is sufficient enough for jellybean.
you might not have seen the word 'new' before 'devices'. the defy is nowhere near new.
i really dont get why people still hope that one day motorola will care about the defy...
cmon, the defy was only updated to gb, not even ics, why would they care? and no, officially our hardware is not enough (according to motorola anyways)... just look at atrix (one of the first dual core devices on the market!), it wont get jellybean or an officially unlockable bootloader either!

http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...grades-promises-developer-editions-of-phones/
"Today, Motorola just floored users with an unprecedented offer: if you bought a phone from Motorola that launched in 2011, most of you will receive an upgrade to Jelly Bean. If, however, you're using a phone that Motorola decides will have a degraded experience, you will receive $100 in credit towards an upgrade. This may mark the first time that a manufacturer has broadly promised compensation for a lack of updates for all of its devices."
Defy was launched in 2010, Defy+ in 2011.

This was on a Verizon press conference. Is the defy+ on Verizon? I don't know. I think Verizon persists on the boot loader (as with the sIII). Because Verizon is an important reseller, I think they will keep the Verizon versions locked.
